But while the mini heatwave ends today forecasters have predicted that average temperatures from April to June will be higher than normal.

The Met Office has also signalled that drier thaN average conditions can be expected.

However we will have to get through a washout Easter first, with rain sweeping across the country and temperatures no higher than 15C (59F).

Yesterday tourists boarded punts on the River Cam as Cambridge notched the highest temperature of the day at 25.4C.

It was hotter than Augusta National, in Georgia, US, where British star Justin Rose competed in the final round at the US Masters golf.

Deckchairs went up across Londons packed parks where it reached 25C, while northern cities Hull and Manchester hit 23C.

Beaches in Brighton and Bournemouth on the South Coast were crammed with families.

Supermarkets reported a rush for BBQ food, booze and ice cream.

The weather is forecast to get cold each day this week until a low of 6C (42.8F) on Easter Monday.

Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge said: Its going to be OK this week, but nowhere near as good.

Weve got a cold front pushing south, which is introducing cooler air.

Its still above average for this time of year and itll still be dry and sunny, but were not going to be as warm as we have been.

Aprils hot temperatures follow the mildest March on record.

Up to 20million people are expected to take to the roads for the Easter getaway on Thursday, which could triple journey times, says the AA.

A number of rail services will also be disrupted as Network Rail carries out more than 200 engineering projects on major lines across the UK.

Nearly a million will try to avoid the chaos by jetting abroad.

In a message for those left behind, the Met Office said: If only this weekend had waited until next week.

Bahamas Realty hopes 15% growth not hit by election | The Tribune – Bahamas Tribune

Posted: at 9:01 am

By NEIL HARTNELL

Tribune Business Editor

nhartnell@tribunemedia.net

Bahamas Realtys chief executive yesterday expressed hope the imminent general election will not stall the 10-15 per cent year-to-date growth in business, which comes on top of 2016s 60 per cent gross sales rise.

Larry Roberts told Tribune Business that the real estate market was in wait and see mode, with high-end Bahamian buyers watching for the elections outcome and to gain a sense of policy direction from the new administration.

Speaking after Bahamas Realty unveiled an 80 per cent year-over-year increase in gross commissions for 2016, Mr Roberts said: What were finding right now with the current market is that everyones wait and see.

Were seeing that the wealthy Bahamian has his money put aside and not doing anything with it at the moment. Hopefully, in another month or two, therell be a change and we can all look forward to increased business.

A temporary decline in business and investment activity is fairly typical just prior to general elections, as companies and investors opt for caution and wait to see the outcome before embarking on capital projects.

With Bahamas Realty also enjoying a 60 per cent year-over-year increase in gross real estate sales for 2016, Mr Roberts said the firm was on track to match or exceed this performance in 2017, unless the bottom drops out or momentum stalls due to the election.

Were ahead of last year. I would say Im up 10-15 per cent over last year, Mr Roberts told Tribune Business.

He attributed hard, hard work by the entire Bahamas Realty team for the significant increase in sales, revealing that he could not recall a transaction that had closed within the period stipulated by the sales contract.

Pointing out most deals allowed for a 60-day closing window, Mr Roberts told Tribune Business: With many of these sales, if you sign a contract today, youd be lucky if it closed in three months.

Its a combination of co-ordination between the various attorneys working on the deal, and if theres bank financing involved theres often a delay with that.

I cannot tell you the last time I had a sale close within the stipulated period. Theres always an excuse, Mr Roberts added.

I remember my father saying to me: Youll work harder to close a sale than make a sale, and the reason will be the lawyers. Youll have to stay on top of them right the way through the process. Thats a general statement, but its so true.

Identifying teamwork as a key factor behind Bahamas Realtys success, Mr Roberts said: Weve been putting a lot of work into training our agents and being a lot more proactive. Thats a great part of our success.

There were also more significant transactions that we have been working on for some time, and which are not necessarily indicative of the market today.

There were a lot of sales in the works, some of them for over a year, that finally came through [in 2016], especially the ones involving the Government.

Mr Roberts described the last six months as very active for Bahamas Realty and its realtors, with sales closes in high-end communities such as Lyford Cay, Old Fort Bay and Ocean Club Estates, even though not all were major transactions.

Weve been very pleased and fortunate to have done as well as we have, but its a lot of hard work in this market, he told Tribune Business. You just have to work twice as hard.

We have a really good group of agents that have been working as a team. That team spirit has really come through and brought us the results.

Bahamas Realty has also invested in technology by offering 3D video tours that allow buyers to walk through a property in virtual reality before they see it in person.

This year has shown us that we are on the right path, and we are grateful to our whole team and to our valued clients, Mr Roberts said in a statement.

We are delighted to see that sales increased so significantly this past year. While the economy has been slow to improve, this tells us that there is still demand for housing and commercial property in the Bahamas.

What we are seeing is that building a relationship of trust is key to consumer confidence.

Gardiner breaks Bahamas national 400m record in Grenada meet … – Bahamas Tribune

Posted: April 10, 2017 at 3:05 am

STEVEN Gardiner broke his own Bahamian national 400 metres record to highlight the inaugural Grenada Invitational in St George's on Saturday night.

Dominating the B race, Gardiner, who was part of the Bahamas team to win 4x400m relay bronze at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro last summer, clocked 44.26 seconds to shave 0.01 from the national record he set in Nassau last June.

The 21-year-old Abaconians impressive performance was one of the fastest ever produced in the month of April, and sets the early season world leading time. Najee Glass, of the US, was a distant second in 45.70.

Gardiner's run upstaged that of local hero Kirani James, the 2012 Olympic 400m champion, who headlined the evening-capping A final. James won handily in 45.44 seconds, finishing nearly a second clear of Briton Martyn Rooney who clocked 46.35.

Bahamas Drops Into Zone Iii After Davis Cup Loss – Bahamas Tribune

THE mens team of player/captain Marvin Rolle and Phillip Major Jr gave it a gallant effort in the pivotal doubles, but it wasnt enough to get the Bahamas past Bolivia in the Davis Cup Zone II tie.

On Saturday at the Club de Tenis Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, Bolivia, Rolle and Major Jr fell 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-0, 6-1 to Bolivias duo of Hugo Dellien and Federicio Zeballos.

With the victory, Bolivia clinched the tie after winning the first two singles of the first day of competition on Friday to remain in Zone II for 2018. With the loss, the Bahamas dropped back down to Zone III.

The tie will be completed on Sunday, but the reverse singles will be relegated to the best-of-three matches instead of the best-of-five in the opening singles on Friday.

In those matches, Bahamas top seed Spencer Newman suffered a 6-2, 6-0, 6-2 loss to Dellien, Bolivias No.2 seed, while Major Jr, playing No.2, fell 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 to Zeballos, Bolivias top seed.

None of Team Bahamas players were available for comments.

But Bahamas Lawn Tennis Associations public relations officer Perry Newton said they had a rain delay after the third set and they were hoping that Team Bahamas would have regrouped.

The team tried to pull it off, but Bolivia just got the best of us in the doubles, he said. So we look forward to next year with the hopes of getting back into Zone II.

Newton said the BLTA is confident that with the calibre of players that they have to work with, the Bahamas has sufficient players to do it again.

Last year, Rolle captained the team that comprised of brothers Baker and Spencer Newman, along with Kevin Major Jr as they advanced out of Zone III.

However, the BLTA didnt have the services of Baker Newman and Kevin Major Jr this year, with both committed to playing for their respective colleges.

Without them, Rolle carried the same team of Spencer Newman, Phillip Major Jr and Justin Lunn to Doral, Florida in February where they lost 5-0 to Venezuela in the first round of the American Zone II tie.

Rolle and the trio of Spencer Newman, Phillip Major Jr and Justin Lunn made the trip to Bolivia in their bid to stay in Zone II. But Newton said Team Bahamas faced a high level of tennis.

Both Zeballos and Dellien are ranked in the top 1,000 on the ATP computer list, but none of Team Bahamas players are ranked.

Despite losing the tie, Newton said he and the other seven spectators who traveled to Bolivia to support Team Bahamas were treated with a lot of love and respect by the home crowd.

It was a lot of fun. Newton stated.

Bahamas Looks To Claim Gold In Judo At Carifta – Bahamas Tribune

Posted: April 7, 2017 at 9:17 pm

By BRENT STUBBS

Senior Sports Reporter

WHEN the Bahamas Judo Federation breaks ground today with the hosting of CARIFTA Judo for the first time, Team Bahamas is confident that they will keep the title here at home.

The two-day competition will get started 9:30am today at the Kendal GL Isaacs Gymnasium with the preliminary rounds, followed by the opening ceremonies at 1pm and the finals at 6pm.

On Saturday, the mixed team competition is scheduled for 10am.

The Bahamas Open will feature over 200 athletes from nine nations, including Aruba, Trinidad and Tobago, Curacao, Guyana, Suriname, Barbados, Martinique and the Bahamas.

The USA and otherCaribbeanteams will participate in the Bahamas Open and the teamstournament. Haiti will be participating in the training camp with all of the aforementioned countries 2-4pm on Saturday.

The following athletes will represent the Bahamas:

Carrying the banner for Team Bahamas, which will be coached by DArcy Rahming and Regina Parotti, are the following:

Under 15 Males - Under 42kg - Brandon Cox, Xavion Johnson; Under 50Kg - Takeel Murphey, Luca Chiacchaari, Gerald Georges and Tyron Scavella; Under 60kg - Matthew Gittens, Adam Charles, Cameron Forbes and Over 60kg - Trevor Cumberbatch.

Under 15 Female - Under 40kg - Sarah Thompson and Arrianna Mitchell; Under 48kg - Naja Rolle and Alexia Smith; Under 57kg - Trenice Cumberbatch, Asia Bullard and RyaniqueJoey and Over 57kg - Kaylee Roberts.

Under 21 Male - Under 60kg - Davante Sweeting and Desmond Bootle; Under 73kg - Taliano Ferguson and AndrewMunnings; Under 90kg - Keyon Cumberbatch and Desmondo Bootle and Over 90kg - Daleon Sweeting, Larry Marshall and Staveros McIntosh.

Under 21 Female - Under 48kg - Jasmine Russell and Alisha Smith; Under 57kg - Taryn Butler, Mya Beneby and Tara Bain; Under 70kg - Raven Pennerman, Breanna Major and Rachel Rolle and Over 70kg - Faith Rae and Karra Hanna.

Parotti, the second vice president of the BJF and head coach of the Abaco Judo Club, said the team is looking good and will definitely put their best foot forward.

I think the team is looking poised to bring a big shake up to the world of judo and to reveal to the Bahamian a new and exciting Olympic sport because judo is an Olympic sport, she stressed.

With Carifta staged here, Parotti said it would be a bonus for the federation because they have the luxury of fielding a very large team at less expense as opposed to traveling.

Keeping them focused is easy because these athletes who have been chosen are very dedicated, she reflected. They have the spirit, the heart and the big commitment to the sport.

From the team selected, Parotti said theres no reason why the team should not live up to their expectations.

I think the international exposure being around other competitors from other countries will only be a plus for them, she stated. They will get a chance to interact and so I think its going to be very exciting for the team.

Team Bahamas will feature four competitors, including Kaylee Roberts, a 13-year-old from the Forrest High Academy, who will be making her international debut in just six months competing in the sport.

It will also showcase veteran Rachel Rolle, the great, great great grandniece of legendary sailor Sir Durward Sea Wolf Knowles.

Rolle, who turns 15 in August, has been competing in the sport for the past seven years, having attained multiple gold, silver and bronze medals from participating in events such as the US Open, Cherry Blossom Tournament and in Barbados.

I expect to do well, hopefully get a gold medal, Rolle said. But Im just going to do my best, hopefully it will be good enough.

I think the competition will be hard because all of these competitors earned their spots just like me so I know they will be good.

Unfortunately, Rolle has been moved up to the under-70 kilos as they advanced from the cadet to junior division where she will get the chance to perform arm bars as a part of her fighting technique.

Ive never fought these people in this division before and every division have a different fighting style, she pointed out.

As for Team Bahamas, Rolle said she likes the make up because there are some very good competitors representing the Bahamas, especially with it being at home.

Its just great to be a part of this team, insisted Rolle, who doesnt anticipate seeing Sir Durward Knowles on the sideline cheering for her as hes not up to it physically.

Dion Pugh will be one of the competitors competing in the Bahamas Open. The 18-year-old student from Doris Johnson High is excited to be making his international debut after competing in the sport for the past year and a half.

I feel great having the event in the Bahamas because I will get to meet new people and experience their level of competition, Pugh said.

Two of my friends showed me a trick or two when I was in high school in Abaco and after I went to watch them, I decided to do it. Im very pleased with my progress and Im hoping that I can win the gold medal for the Bahamas.

Like him, Pugh, who only did a lot of swimming in the past, said all of his teammates have the mentality that they can win, so they are all looking forward to the competition getting underway.

And Karra Hanna, a 17-year-old, said its only been five months since one of her uncles encouraged her to get involved because of her size.

The former basketball player at both RM Bailey and Doris Jo9hnson High Schools said two previous international events shes participated in will help to propel her to become a champion this weekend.

The training and the time that I put into it and the help from my fellow teammates and coaches, Im pretty sure that I can win, she projected.

I just have to stay focused, keep my mindset on the goal and I know I can do it.

Looking at Team Bahamas, Hanna said they are all in a position to do something big.

They cant get any better than this, she quipped. Weve been training six days a week and there was no slacking off. We put in the work. So everyone is selected deserves to be there.

With the games being held at home, Hanna said she just hope that the Bahamian public will come out and throw their support behind them and get to see the hard work that they put in.

I know Im just excited and I hope that I can get the gold and the Bahamas can be victorious, Hanna summed up.

MTSU lost justnearly $2,000after spending more than $1.5 million in back-to-back offshore bowl trips, according to an open records request.

The only loss in money came from expenses from the Bahamas Bowl where the Blue Raiders lost a total of $1,951, according to a financial recap.

MTSU spent$592,003 on the Bahamas Bowl trip and were reimbursed $573,167 by Conference USA and gained $16,885 in ticket sales.

Ticket sales actually helped MTSU avoid a net loss when it came to Hawaii Bowl expenses, according to the recap. Documents show ticket sales were reported at $21,915.

The university spent $1,083,824 on the Hawaii Bowl trip and will get an estimated $1,066,126 back from C-USA.

Although the only loss of money came during the Bahamas Bowl, the reimbursement for the Hawaii Bowl is just an estimate at this time and could change at a later date.

MTSU became the first NCAA school to play in back-to-back offshore bowl games in different locations this past season.

Athletic director Chris Massaro said while expenses are expected to go down next year, so will the C-USA reimbursement.

"I would assume so our reimbursement would go down," Massaro said."What C-USA is designed to do, they structure reimbursements so (school) do not losemoney on the bowl game."

When asked whether he'd prefer his football team playing in a mainland bowl next year, Massaro just said he's looking forward to being back in a position to be in a bowl game.

"If we do (make it back to a bowl game), we'd love to go to a place where our fans, bands and community can go and celebrate with us," Massaro said.

MTSU lost both the Bahamas and Hawaii bowls, and both were played on the past two Christmas Eves. The Blue Raiders have gone1-5 in bowl games over the past decade and have not won a bowl game since the 2009 New Orleans Bowl.
