Could Last Week’s Tropical Depression Four Come Back to Life in the Atlantic? Hurricane Hunter Mission Scheduled – The Weather Channel

Posted: July 10, 2017 at 8:39 pm

Story Highlights

The ghost of Tropical Depression Four is expected to track toward the Bahamas and South Florida later this week.

This system has a low chance of becoming a tropical depression again.

A hurricane hunter investigative mission has been tentatively scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

A second disturbance could pass near the Windward Islands late this week but faces obstacles to development.

The remnant of last week's Tropical Depression Four continues to sproutthunderstorms, and a rebirthas a tropical cyclone can't be ruled out as it tracks toward the Bahamas and possibly Florida later this week.

(MORE: Hurricane Central)

Located just over 100 miles north of the Virgin Islands, this ghostof what was once T.D. Fourhadflared some healthy convection Monday and throughout the weekend.

This disturbance appears to be in an environment of at least some wind shear, or change in wind direction with height, but in an otherwise sufficiently moist atmosphere with winds spreading apart aloft to support these occasional bursts of thunderstorms.

If thunderstorms were to persist and any low-pressure circulation near the surface is found, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) would then resume advisories on T.D. Four, or if winds are strong enough, Tropical Storm Don.

The NHC has tentatively scheduled a Tuesday afternoon hurricane hunter reconaissance mission into this disturbance to see if it has indeed become a depression or storm.

But, for now, this possibility of redevelopment is low.

Whatever the outcome, the same atmospheric steering wheel as was the case last week exists this week.

The Bermuda-Azores high should keep this disturbance on a general west-northwest track.

This should push the disturbance into the Bahamas starting Wednesday, and may give a boost to the typical showers and thunderstorms over parts of the Florida Peninsula starting Thursday.

(FORECAST: Nassau, Bahamas | Miami)

The disturbance will battle at least some modest wind shear andperhapssome dry airbefore it gets to the Bahamas, so, again, the odds of it redeveloping into a tropical depression appear low.

Beyond that, the disturbance may enter the eastern Gulf of Mexico by the weekend, and would have to be monitored for any developmentthere. If anything, it could lead to another heavy rain threat in parts of the Deep South, where the ground remains soggy from previous heavy rain.

(MORE:Strange Start to the Hurricane Season)

For now, there's nothing to be alarmed about, but it's worth checking back with us for any updates to this forecast over the next several days.

(MORE: Why Long-Range Model Forecasts For the Tropics Can't Often Be Trusted)

Much farther east, another tropical wave in the Atlantic is being monitored.

This one is still more than halfway between the west African coast and the Lesser Antilles, several hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.

(MORE: Why We Watch the Cabo Verde Islands in Hurricane Season)

As was the case with T.D. Four last week, this east Atlantic system faces a pair of nemeses to develop.

First, dry air is still abundant from the Caribbean Sea to west Africa, visiblein this satellite loop from UW-CIMSS, showing the yellow-, orange- and red-shaded areas pouring southwestward into the strip of the tropics between Africa and the Lesser Antilles.

Secondly, wind shear increases in the Caribbean Sea. Wind shear isthe change in wind speed and/or direction with height that can rip apart a fledgling tropical disturbance by blowing thunderstorms away from developing low pressure.

(MORE: A Typical July in the Atlantic Hurricane Season)

So, assuming the dry air doesn't stifle this tropical wave before getting to the Windward Islands by Friday, increased Caribbean wind shear may do so.

At any rate, there is plenty of time to monitor this disturbance, so check back with us at weather.com for the latest.

This is a good time to make sure you have a plan in case a hurricane threatens. The Federal Alliance for Safe Homes has an excellent site that can help you make a hurricane plan.

DELPHOS A Delphos couple were injured in a home invasion assault that occurred Saturday morning.

David and Dianna Allemeier of 209 S. Pierce St. in Delphos were both taken to St. Ritas Medical Center in Lima for treatment of injuries received when a man gained entry to their home and reportedly assaulted them.

Delphos Police were first called out at 6:05 a.m. Saturday on a report of a suspicious person in the 300 block of Jackson Street who was knocking on doors and then walking away. However, while en route to that call, officers were informed that a man had been injured and was bleeding in the 200 block of Pierce Street.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found Allemeier bleeding from an injury to his neck. The Delphos resident said he received the injury from a man who had gained entry into his home.

Officers approached the residence and found the back door unlocked and a lot of blood at the scene. The home was secured and a K-9 and Crime Scene Unit sought from the Allen County Sheriffs Office.

Allemeier then said his wife was still in the house and officers then entered and found Mrs. Allemeier, who was also injured, in the bedroom area of the residence.

After the Allemeiers were transported to the hospital, a K-9 search was made of the area, and the house was processed by an Allen County sheriffs deputy.

No information was released on whether items were taken from the Allemeier house.

Police are currently seeking a young, skinny white male with black hair, possibly wearing cutoff shorts. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Delphos Police Department or Allen County Sheriffs Office.

The investigation is continuing, with no further information forthcoming at this time.

Bahamas, July 7, 2017 Grand Bahama As the country celebrates its 44th Independence on July 10 some of the best and brightest Bahamians have made contributions in many spheres internationally, said Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Hon. Michael Pintard during the Flag Raising Ceremony on Friday.

The ceremony is part of the 44th Anniversary of Independence celebrations. Our small national has become the envy, not just of the region but countries around the world who have understudied what we have done in tourism and in financial services. Even in crisis, we continue to prove we are resilient and powerful. In the aftermath of the blacklisting, we produce a cadre of compliance officers who designed one of the sophisticated compliance regimes that assisted this region in getting back on track.

Therefore, this morning as we raise our flag, we salute all those nation builders on whose shoulders we stand, some with title and many with no name or face recognition but, nevertheless, they played a pivotal role in transforming life as we know it in The Bahamas. So, we salute them. We also acknowledge that there are many unrealized dreams that we have set, and there are some stubborn issues that threaten the gains that we have made thus far. This Minnis led government believes that the collective will and genius of the Bahamian people will enable us to grow our economy once again; reduce the high incidences of crime and the high occurrences of non-communicable and other diseases. We are determined to forge deeper relationships with all Bahamians, regardless of their political persuasion, religious differences, differences in race. All of us have to be on the same page if we are to transform this country for the better.

Minister Pintard saluted all those who had the insight and courage 44 years ago who felt it was time for the country to govern its own affairs and sit at international tables as equals.

The pursuit and achievement of Independence on the 10th of July, 1973, was an acknowledgement that we ought to be the main agents, the main architects designing our own future and managing the growth and development of our own country. We accepted the challenge undergirded by our faith in God and the confidence in our collective ability as a people.

Over the last four decades plus, despite all of our challenges, weve accomplished I believe you would agree with me this morning, a great deal as a people. In the international sphere, our voice factored loudly. When we engaged as a global community in the discussion of disarmament, there was a Bahamian chairing many of those sessions, Dr. Davidson Hepburn. In international diplomacy our own Missouri Sherman-Peters impacted the significant work done by the United Nations, and our first Prime Minister, Sir Lynden Oscar Pindlings voice resonated internationally as we dismantled as a global community Apartheids wall and rebuilt in its place, a multiracial South Africa that even today is working to forge a lasting peace.

The country has made contributions all over the world, he said. In academics, we continue to produce multiple Rhodes scholars, scientists that are impacting the world both in technology, just ask NASA and in medicine as we travel throughout particularly Africa assisting on many levels. We have set a standard. Many of our scholars have sat international standardized exams and performed as well, and often better, than their colleagues who hail from around the globe.

We are good as anyone else, anywhere else in the world.

Sons and daughters of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas have caused tens of millions around the world to pause and salute The Bahamas as our flag has been raised in numerous stadiums around the world where track and field took place, in aquatic centres where swimming took place, on the shores even in Regattas. Our amateur and elite athletes have made a difference, have made us proud and have made the world take note.

He added, This morning, we salute all of you who continue to engage in this nation building exercise. Bahamians, those that have chosen to cast their lot with us and have moved to The Bahamas. Diplomats who have worked with us on an ongoing basis, we look forward to working with you to frame a democracy that will be envied.

This years theme, One God, One People, One Bahamas is a most appropriate reminder of the core values that have held us together since Independence.

Also present for the flag raising ceremony, held at the Harold Degregory Complex were: Senator the Hon. Dion Foulkes, Minister of Labour; Senator the Hon. J. Kwasi Thompson, Minister of State for Grand Bahama in the Office of the Prime Minister along with other Members of Parliament, senior government officials and religious leaders.

While the ceremony was taking place in Freeport, Senate president, the Hon. Kay Forbes-Smith was present with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Hon. K. Peter Turnquest in East Grand Bahama. Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Public Works, the Hon. Iram Lewis and Parliamentary Secretary of Information and Communications in the Office of the Prime Minister, the Hon. Pakesha Parker-Edgecombe were in West Grand Bahama. All three areas held Flag Raising Ceremonies simultaneously.

THE Bahamas Golf Federation's team at the 2017 Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships teed off competition yesterday at the St Andrews Golf Club in Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago and looks to improve on last year's sixth-place finish.

Following day one, Sophie Anand has been one of the top performers for the Bahamas thus far and finished just one stroke behind the leader in the Girls' Under-13 division.

The current Albany Women's Club champion and Bahamas junior national girls' under-13 champion shot an opening round 85 (+13).

Anand returns to make her second appearance as a member of Team Bahamas and will also look to better her third place finish from last year's CAJGC when she finished with a three-day total of 258 in the division.

Tyesha Tynes is making her CAJGC debut and is currently 12th in the 15-member field.

Haylie Turnquest is locked in another close race for the leader board of the Girls' U-15 division. Turnquest is in a two-way tie for third place with her opening round 83 (+11). Like Anand, she is one stroke behind the division leader.

Turnquest, the Bahamas' junior national champion for her age group, finished second in her division and No.19 overall, the best finish for Team Bahamas at CAJGC 2016 with a total score of 235.

The lone competitor in the Girls' U-18, Inecia Rolle is in fourth place after she shot 86 (+14).

CONSECUTIVE losses at the CAZOVA Senior Championships for Men have Team Bahamas in an unfavourable position and out of contention at the group stage.

Team Bahamas lost to Jamaica in three sets - 25-18, 25-19 25-18 - last night at the tournament hosted in Couva, Trinidad.

On night one, the Bahamas lost a tough five-set match to Barbados - 22-25, 25-19, 12-25, 25-18, 15-11.

Prince Wilson, captain of Team Bahamas (the 2012 champions) said he felt his team did not play to their true potential.

We only played in patches and we need to improve overall very quickly as we look to win the tournament and qualify to the next round.

Bahamas coach Covance Mortimer echoed the views of his captain, saying: We did not keep focus for the match at all. There were also too many mental errors on our path and in the fifth set our game just broke down completely.

The Bahamas has been placed in Group E with Jamaica, Haiti and Barbados. They face Haiti today in the final game of the group stage. The playoffs are slated to begin on Friday (July 8) and wrap up on Sunday (July 9).

The tournament serves as a qualifier for the World Championships with the first two teams earning their automatic berths into the next round.

The CAZOVA Senior Championships for Women will be hosted July 26-31 at the same venue. The Bahamas will be placed in Group D with Martinique, Trinidad & Tobago and Guadeloupe.

A weak Tropical Depression Four is tracking west toward the Bahamas – Washington Post

Posted: at 2:33 am

Tropical Depression Four the fourth tropical cyclone of the 2017 season developed late Wednesday east of the Caribbean. If the storm strengthens, which seems unlikely, it would become Tropical Storm Don.

On Thursday morning, the depression was about halfway between the Lesser Antilles and the coast of Africa.

The wind shear around the storm has weakened, which should allow it to maintain its intensity over the next day or so. But the shear, which acts to tear storms apart and keep them from strengthening, is expected to increase as the storm drifts west. That alone would probably be enough to keep this weak tropical depression at bay.

But its also surrounded by very dry air with origins in the Sahara Desert, and that will probably be the nail in the coffin for Tropical Depression Four. These cyclones need warm, moist air to strengthen and grow, and it looks like the Saharan air layer is going to wrap around the system over the next couple of days and extinguish thunderstorm development.

A few of the forecast models are predicting that the system will strengthen modestly, though these particular models tend to not perform well in situations like this. The global models (GFS, UKMET and European) are all predicting that the storm will dissipate before it reaches the Bahamas.

For the time being, the the National Hurricane Center predicts that Tropical Depression Four will maintain its weak intensity over the next 48 hours before dissipating by Saturday or Sunday.

Bahamas, July 6th 2017 Nassau BAMSI contractor, Audley Hanna has been found guilty of property scam and could face up to three years jail time. Earlier this week, Hanna appeared before Magistrate Samuel McKinney where he pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing by reason of service.

According to reports, Hanna received $50,500 from Tariana Ceremy between September 2007 and September 2012, under the assumption that he was selling a lot in Tellie Court, off Cowpen Road. However, it turned out that Hanna was not owner of the property and cheated the woman into a bogus property sale.

Hanna is the same contractor who was involved in the controversial multi-million dollar BAMSI contract to build a facility in Andros. However, after the institutes dorm was set on fire, officials discovered that Hanna never paid all the risk insurance. This also affected taxpayers money.

Magistrate McKinney has now ordered Hanna to refund the woman $25,000 by September 8 and pay the balance of $25,500 by November 30th or be remanded at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.

The Bahamas government has yet to recover the money from the BAMSI contract.

Bahamas Power and Light company may be responsible for their increase in fuel – Magnetic Media (press release)

Bahamas, July 6th 2017 Nassau Bahamians may now be experiencing the burden of higher fuel charges, and it may be the fault of the company itself. According to the Central Bank of The Bahamas (CBOB), the increase in The Bahamas Power and Light fuel charges is a result of their high use at the Blue Hills Power Station.

A report from the Central Bank has revealed that the BPLs household energy costs increased by almost 50%.

Central Bank said that BPL began a robust plan to overhaul its engines at the Clifton Pier Power Station in preparation for the 2017 summer season since last year. As a result, greater reliance on the units at the Blue Hills Power Station were needed. The heat during the summer period increases the demand for power supply.

In other words, because the company opted to use a more expensive engine this year, a higher fuel charge was demanded. That combined with fuel prices globally determines the monthly fuel charge for customers.

However, Central Bank admitted that the fuel charge is a direct pass through to the customer and is not associate with BPLs operating costs.

Customers may not have any say in this, however, since a five-year legislation called regulatory holiday hinders the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) from intervening with BPLs prices. Basically, it means that URCA cant regular or challenge BPLs prices for the first five years of the agreement that they signed with the government.

Additionally, BPL is not required to advise the public when surcharges increase or decrease.
