Elderly called on to retrain in their ’70s’ as concerns rise over automation of job market – Express
Posted: at 11:24 am
Lord Martin Rees, emeritus professor of cosmology and astrophysics at Cambridge University and expert in future technology told GB Newsmachines are set to take over and force Britons to take up other careers, often well into their 70's and retirement age, as laborious and "mind-numbing" jobs will be fulfilled by machines.
Lord Rees explained: People are going to have to change their careers over their lifetime much more.
What we really, really need is more jobs for people to be teaching assistants..
Carers for young and old, custodians in public parks and things of that kind.
And in a surprising moment, he suggested how these are the kind of jobs that can be done by people in their sixties or seventies.
JUST IN'Great way to save money' - How to make your retirement savings go further this Christmas
Lord Rees went on to warn how this will speed up as more jobs are replaced by machines.
He suggested mind numbing jobs in places like warehouses and call centres will likely be a start point for the changes.
But he said the fallout of this will be a glut of unemployed workers requiring employment
The astrophysicist explained: The people that work there, they need to be given employment in a more satisfying line where being a human being is important
READ MOREDad ordered to repay all Universal Credit he received during COVID-19
Speaking to the Telegraph last week on the issue of the importance of automation in the job market, he said: "The pandemic has deepened inequalities.
"We have become aware of our dependence on key workers and they are the ones who have suffered (and their children too) while many of the wealthiest people enlarged their fortunes."
He added: We have also learnt that the dependence of manufacturing on a single supply chain and just in time delivery is imprudent.
The concept of equal opportunity is a sham for children growing up in deep deprivation."

Automation: the fuel for creativity – CampaignLive
Posted: at 11:24 am
The French novelist Gustave Flaubert once said: Be regular and orderly in your life so you can be violent and original in your work. Wise words to consider as advertising wrestles with the notion that automation may be the saviour of creativity rather than stealing its limelight.
The fear, of course, is that insight, strategy, brainstorming and design will be handed over to the robots. This reflects a much wider cultural fear around machines in the world of work; such as estimates from the World Economic Forum that 65% of primary school children will work in jobs not yet in existence. Or that in 2019, the ONS estimated that 1.5 million Brits would lose some or all their duties to automated machines.
But these fears mistake automations purpose, which should be to relieve the burden of routine or repetitive tasks, channelling greater creativity rather than outsourcing it.
The more we can automate such tasks in our industry booking campaigns, competitive reporting, resolving finance queries the more our teams can focus on understanding clients challenges and produce brilliant, creative work to overcome them.
For us, automation has been, and will continue to be a major focus. To take just one example of how it manifests, our booking bot, Abacus, garnered dozens of responses from across the industry and across the world earlier this year, asking for more information. Apparently, none of us wants to see our teams bogged down in these repetitive (and not very rewarding) tasks.
The challenge to our industry over the past few decades has been the lack of automation. As creative, planning and strategy departments have been burdened with a more complex media landscape to navigate, more tools and data sources to choose from, and more bureaucratic admin systems, as positive as these systems are individually, they can distract from the fundamental challenge of solving clients problems.
While battling with all of these, where can we find the time to analyse culture for unique and compelling ideas, to strive to understand what makes people really tick? Many of the systems that aimed to help office workers be more productive and efficient have proven to be a false economy, instead intensifying distractions, which is detrimental to creativity.
Because more than anything, creativity needs focus. Distractions waste time and deplete energy. Research into digital distraction by Gloria Mark, professor at the informatics department at the University of California, found it takes 23 minutes and 15 seconds after a distraction to return to full focus.
We can think of the potential use of automation in agency land as a parallel to the running of the human body. Think of the incredible human brain and its dual ability to run System 1 (speedy, innate, and instinctive behaviour and decisions) and System 2 (slower, rational and more considered thinking).
System 1 is relied on heavily for repetitive tasks that support our very existence, such as breathing, brushing ones teeth before bed, or in adland, an agencys financial timesheets. This automation allows System 2 to then have the space to think beyond the obvious; to be strategic and creative to solve the challenges we face.
Note these systems arent located in a siloed brain, working in different departments, but work in tandem together. In fact, research has found that decisions are most effective when drawing from both systems, the automatic emotional response, and the considered rational one.
Advertising remains the creative discipline for business. As such it must deliver against two seemingly conflicting truths.
Creativity may thrive with space, time, and dedicated focus, from cloud-gazing to taking baths for that Eureka moment. But it does so against a furious backdrop of business evolution.
Quite simply the only way advertisers can deliver both the space for deep thinking and rich conversations that creativity thrives in is to work and trust in automation.
Nadine Young is the chief executive of Starcom UK

ZERO Announces Apollo, its Latest AI-Driven Productivity Automation Tool for the Legal Industry – KEVN Black Hills Fox

Apollo is a Desktop-based Time Capture Automation Solution that Records Time Spent on Billable Activity
CAMPBELL, Calif., Oct. 21, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- ZERO, a pioneer in productivity automation solutions for professional services firms, today announced the launch of Apollo, a new software solution that automatically captures lawyers time spent on billable work on any desktop device and seamlessly integrates it into their existing billing platform. Apollo is a low-touch, high-impact solution that can be deployed seamlessly on a law firm's existing IT infrastructure.
Apollo offers the legal industry a new intelligent product that mimics human cognition by learning from users' activities to produce accurate recordings of projects and billable time to drive higher client value and improve employee morale. According to ZERO's latest legal industry survey published in August 2021, lawyers waste 30% of their time on non-billable admin tasks like tracking and reporting time time that could be spent improving the quality of their work lives by focusing on practicing law.
"We heard loud and clear from lawyers that they want a better work-life balance, and one way to provide that is freeing up their time spent on administrative tasks," said Alex Babin, ZERO CEO. "With Apollo, the time they spend working on their desktops is automatically captured and entered into their billing software, meaning they don't have to spend hours at the end of every day, week or month manually entering that time, when they could be watching their child play soccer or focusing on winning a case."
Apollo provides three key benefits to lawyers and their support staff: 1) ensuring the quality and relevancy of time entries; 2) reducing the hours spent on manual timekeeping; and 3) increasing revenue for law firms. Apollo joins ZERO's suite of automation products that enable lawyers to be more productive and generate more revenue by automating and streamlining onerous administrative tasks such as email management and mobile time capture. ZERO is well-known in the legal industry via partnerships with AMLAW500 companies automating their internal administrative processes, like billing, email, and document management.

CNC shops, and their clients, both benefit from the many advantages accrued by incorporating robots into various CNC manufacturing and production processes.

CNC manufacturing is locked in a constant battle to curb production costs, enhance product quality, and adhere to customer demands, all amidst rising competition. To meet these challenges, CNC shops have adopted state-of-the-art technologies to reduce costs and boost productivity.
Robotic Automation in CNC ShopsTo streamline the CNC machining process and increase efficiency, companies are increasingly implementing robotic automation in support of various types of CNC machines, such as Lathe, Milling, and Plasma Cutting machines. Incorporating robotic automation into CNC shop provides many benefits, be it for a single production cell or an entire workshop. Examples include the following:
Greater Efficiency and ProductivityRobots can perform cutting, grinding, or milling at higher uptime levels and produce 47% more parts-per-hour compared to traditional approaches. While the benefits of a CNC Machine are enormous, adding robotic automation to a CNC shop can significantly increase throughput without exceeding budget limits.
Robots can operate without fail for hours and do not demand off-hours or breaks. Part loading and unloading can be done effortlessly without frequent maintenance checks, thereby resulting in less downtime.
The modern free-standing robotic CNC machine tenders can process several component sizes, IDs, and ODs more efficiently than human labor. The robots themselves are operated using menu-driven, touch-screen HMIs, which are ideal for non-programmers.
Custom automation solutions utilizing robots have been shown to reduce cycle time by 25%. With robotic work cells, only a small amount of time is required for changeovers. Such time efficiency helps companies better cater to customer needs, as well as achieve economically efficient small batch runs.
Improved Labor Safety and SecurityRobots include a number of features to ensure that the workforce enjoys a high level of safety when executing core tasks. As an added benefit, implementing robots for specific processes lets humans prioritize cognitive-oriented tasks.
You can look out for certain self-contained robotic CNC machine tenders if you are running on a tight budget. These tenders bear minimal initial expenses and can be conveniently installed and operated without professional supervision.
Reduced ExpendituresThe rate of deployment when robotic automation is involved is typically swift and efficient. This helps minimize the expenses of integration.
Companies can utilize self-contained robotic CNC machine tenders if they are running on a tight budget. Since the initial expense for machine tenders is relatively low, manufacturers enjoy a swift return on investment (ROI) without compromising productivity.
The tenders themselves can be installed and operated without professional supervision. In addition, programming tenders is relatively simple, which speeds their deployment and redeployment.
Simplistic Installation / Robust MultitaskingRobotic CNC machine tender units can be installed by personnel with minimal experience. A person only needs to place the tender in front of the CNC machines, fasten it to the ground, and connect power and Ethernet. Typically, simplified installation and operating tutorials are available to help companies set everything up with little hassle.
Unlike human labor, robots can efficiently service more than a single machine part. Loading a workpiece into a machine is easily accomplished by a robot, and during the machining process, you can program the robot to load yet another machine. This practice is time-efficient as the two processes are executed simultaneously.
A robot can spontaneously adapt to a new process in contrast to a human employee, which requires training to facilitate transition into the new procedure guidelines.
Greater Adaptability and Insourcing RateThere are times when shops receive unfamiliar job requests or varying component specifications. This can be a challenge, but if you have implemented a robotic automation system, you only need to reprogram the system and alter the tooling as necessary.
Despite their compactness, the production capacity of automated cells is enormous. They can also execute multiple tasks simultaneously, which further boosts production rates and increases efficiency. With this increased throughput capacity, CNC shops can reduce the need for outsourcing, and in some cases, production work that was formally outsourced can be brought back in house.
Better Contract PricingRobots ensure manufacturing consistency in CNC workshops. This enables firms to more accurately estimate production durations and associated expenditures, which, in turn, has improved contract pricing.
Robots have rendered the annual production contract expenses more affordable than ever, which has persuaded more clients to engage in the same.
Final WordsRobots are exceptionally productive and relatively simple to operate, all while being economically feasible. As a result, robotics automation has gained widespread acceptance in the CNC industry, with an increasing number of CNC shop owners incorporating robots into various manufacturing and production processes.
The clients of CNC shops, too, have recognized the many benefits of robotics automation for CNC operations, including higher consistency and quality, as well as lower production costs. For client companies, these advantages, in turn, have made contracting for CNC work easier and more affordable than ever.

Automation, portable manufacturing and finding the right partner: Industry vets discuss the coming gene therapy wave – FiercePharma
Posted: at 10:25 pm
During this week's Fierce BiotechCell & Gene Therapy event, there were times when the opening panelists sounded like TV marriage counselors Dr. Phil and Dr. Laura.
If youre going to be in this relationship for years, there has to be an understanding that theres some give and take across the board when things dont go well. Thats how you preserve a relationship, said Curran Simpson, the senior VP of product development and chief technology officer at Maryland-based Regenxbio.
No, this wasnt a bizarre detour into couples counseling. It was part of Simpsons answer to a question about the top factors cell and gene therapy companies face when selecting a contract manufacturing partner.
Jerry Keybl, the senior director of cell and gene therapy at Boston-based MilliporeSigma, stayed with the theme.
Theres many balls in the air at all times and having the transparency to build trust and partnership is the hallmark and the base of any successful relationship, Keybl said.
Kim Raineri, the chief manufacturing and technology officer at Boston-based Avrobio, might have had the most Dr. Phil-esqueanswer.
Its not just a transactional relationship, he said. [Its] how they deal with issues when they occur and issues always occur.

Joking aside, the three industry veterans provided insights on a variety of cell and gene therapy issues, including the CDMO question.
Raineri stressed the right-sizing of CDMO partners. A small gene therapy company, matched with a large CDMO, can easily become disenchanted by a lack of attention. And sometimes the level of attention is dictatednot by the size of the company but by the volume of work the CDMO is performing.
These organizations are an extension of your organization and you need to be very comfortable with that group, Raineri said.
As for Regenxbio, Simpson said his company considerswhether a manufacturing contractor will allow Regenxbio's personnel on the floor when batches are produced
A person in the plant thats experienced and can really carry the process knowledge to the CMO is an absolute must in our opinion, Simpson said.

Much of the discussion was forward-looking, with panelists addressing the concerns of the looming gene therapy wave and the capacity challenges that will come with it.
So what is the biggest challenge today in gene therapy?
Many of these processes are still very bespoke in how they are approached, Keybl said. That limits the transfer as we solve problems from one product to another, from one innovator to another. A great reference is the progress thats happened in monoclonal antibodies. I think as an industry they are more homogenous from a process perspective than we are in the viral vector industry. Thats what we should keep in mind when we think about maximizing efficiency and scale.
Regenxbios response to the wave is to create its own manufacturing facility, one that will be highly automated and is set to come online early next year.
People will be able to watch batches from their living room, if they choose to, Simpson said. If you dont automate your plant, then you are signing up for a very, very large workforce to make production happen.
While also stressing automation, Avrobio took a different approach to the problem, developing a portable manufacturing platform. Its an off-the-shelf manufacturing unitthe size of a washing machinecustomized for a process that is nimble" and"scalable across our portfolio, Raineri said.

The approach has allowed Avrobio to manufacture and conduct clinical trials over multiple continents and with multiple indications.
We have an end-to-end, closed, automated drug product manufacturing process that we can take globally, Raineri added. If you look at conventional space in cell and gene therapy, theres a lot of manual processes, open aseptic manipulation and those are just not scalable."
