Medelln Campus writes the future of worldwide industrial automation – Intelligent CIO ME

Rockwell Automation has launched an ambitious plan to accompany automation in manufacturing plants, regardless of their level of digital maturity. We look at the benefits it brings.
Industries are not stopping in the race for automation and need strategic partners with enough experience to guide them on that path. At the Rockwell Automation campus in Medelln, Colombia, they work on various fronts regarding the future of industrial automation and the software that supports it.
Csar Arango, Engineering Manager, Rockwell Automation, said: When I talk about the future, I refer to the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) proposal in the cloud, that is, the possibility of hosting all of an industrys software in the cloud and not on local servers.
In addition to having deployed the necessary programs as well as benefiting from the associated saving costs, workers can access various aspects of the operation process without being in the plant.
SaaS offers advantages such as multi-location, immediate connection and collaboration between multiple locations. The suite that provides these services is FactoryTalk Hub, focused on software to support an ecosystem of industrial applications. And it is in line with what companies like Microsoft, Accenture, Salesforce and PTC, among others, have done.
88% of executives expect to optimize technology through services that are in the cloud, not by using their servers. Services is where we start to play, said Arango.
Rockwell Automation intends that in the next five years, IT and OT (Operational Technology) converge to take advantage of the significant advantages and computing capacity that the cloud offers and, thus, give better tools to the OT world.
This convergence will open many possibilities such as providing access to the software from anywhere, sharing information internally and with clients, enabling on-demand scaling, and as a result, generating cost reduction and performance improvement.
The products they have been developing allow the client to view the status of a plant in real-time or have analysis based on Big Data to identify deviations of any of the devices.
Arango points out that if a conveyor belt in a factory stops, the entire plant must stop. And this may be since no one perceived the vibration level was changing slightly for a few days. It is something that could be foreseen. This solution aims to optimize costs and generate fewer failures in the plants.
FactoryTalk in three stages
In FactoryTalk Hub, there are three main chapters: Design, operation and maintenance. For its development, Rockwell Automation has made a strategic alliance with Microsoft. In the Design Hub, the tools allow you to migrate from previous versions of drivers to the most up-to-date ones to develop the capacity of emulation and design through the cloud.
For example, if you are looking to design a cookie production plant, you can simulate the entire process in the cloud through software before creating it in the physical world.
The Medellin team engages in the Design Hub with file type conversion tools, Logix controller update, project analysis and digital engineering, emulation tools, digital twins and many other emerging technologies.
The Operation Hub, Plex Systems (recently acquired by Rockwell Automation) is a leader in cloud-native innovative manufacturing solutions operating in 2,400 plants in 37 countries and processing around 8.5 billion transactions per day. Through software with the same name, it allows managing and automating production. To connect on-premises or edge devices to the cloud requires IoT technology.
As the Maintenance Hub, Rockwell Automation, with its subsidiary Fiix, provides a cloud-native computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) powered by AI.
Then there is the FactoryTalk Vault, launched a year ago at the Automation Fair. This application drives the management and control of industrial automation programs, allowing companies to optimize their backup costs. It combines with design tools to keep their control software versions in the cloud updated.

2021 in review – AI, automation, robophobia and how to cure it – Diginomica

It's been a busy year in AI and robotics, with ongoing debates around ethics and the societal impact of automation sitting alongside development in technology. Here's my top stories from the year.
AI: Preserving human jobs is not enough
Why? The ethics of artificial intelligence are never far from the news, with bias in historic data and algorithm design risking the automation of societal prejudices. In December, Neil Raden cast his eye over proposals to counter this from the Stanford Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence conference and found them wanting. Preserving jobs is not enough, he said:
Why limit it to workers? Are we not concerned with the welfare of the young, the old, the infirm, oppressed minorities? Wouldn't a scheme like this, even if it didn't displace human workers (presumably those making $7.25/hour), merely reinforce the status quo? I'd putthisin in a class of proposals that are aspirational, but without any foundation for success.
UK launches algorithm transparency standard
Why? The UK is getting to grips with these issues too. In December, Derek du Preez looked at a new standard for algorithmic transparency, led by the Cabinet Office in the wake of the National AIandNational Datastrategies this year.Welcoming the move, he wrote:
Transparency when deploying algorithms is essential. I welcome the government's efforts to lead in this area. However, what I would like more detail on is how this is going to be governed and where information will be held on the projects being deployed. Transparency is essential, but so is accountability.
The AI anthropologist speaks out on bias
Why? For one AI innovator, GainX CEO and anthropologist Angelique Mohring, diversity is critical to removing the risk of harm from biased systems. In September, she told me:
It is a concern of mine that AI is built upon, and then built upon again, without checkpoints in place. In anthropology weve moved on, over the centuries, from where bias was built into early anthropological studies. A hundred years later we're still unfolding some of those biases. Introduce women, for example into anthropology, and suddenly assumptions that were made and built upon for years [by men] have been undone and turned on their head.
She added:
With AI, my concern is what's the damage that's going to be done today, because it's moving at such a pace that policy is having a very difficult time keeping up with it.
UK launches National AI Strategy: Can it be a superpower?
Why? For the UK, the big story in this field was publication of the AI Strategy in September after years in which Whitehall gave the impression of already having one. The 35-page document promised a 10-year plan to turn the UK into an AI superpower, but largely covered the next 12 months. This suggested real strategic urgency, I wrote, adding:
Can the UK really catch up with the US and China? In research, ideas, and innovative applications, no doubt. But the troubling facts are these: first, the UK has never backed its rhetorical superlatives with much more than piecemeal central investments.
UK AI Strategy: The same, only more so
Why? This point was rammed home in the summer by Professor Dame Wendy Hall, co-author of the AI Review that kickstarted much of this process. In July, Hall said of the incoming Strategy:
All the things that we managed to get the government to pull out the bag [] are a drop in the ocean compared to what we actually need. It's a drop in the ocean of whats needed to keep ourselves at the forefront of the AI agenda in the world. [] The job is not done. And we have to increase funding in this area.
The UKs political narrative makes AI regulation harder
Why? The prevailing political mood runs counter to many of the UKs bold ambitions in AI, said a report that pulled no punches. But its not all doom and gloom, I wrote in November.
The Terminator clich of technology turning on its human masters rather ignores the AI systems that speed the development of vaccines, help in the early detection of diseases and pandemics, and minimize heat, waste, and carbon emissions in power grids and data centers all things that seek to avert apocalypse. By speeding up analysis and spotting hidden patterns in data, AI might be the thing that saves the planet.
UK launches Innovation Strategy, but needs a skills intervention
Why? Strategy after strategy arrived this year, falling over themselves like Krug-crazed guests at a Downing Street Christmas party. The Innovation Strategy, announced on 22 July as another pillar of the Plan for Growth, was a welcome statement of the UKs aim to be a world leader in science and tech. While supporting its ambitions, I wrote:
[The Strategy] does little to fix the UKs core problems, which include a longstanding lack of skills and persistently underpowered central investment. The worlds top five markets for industrial robots remain China, Japan, the US, South Korea (the worlds most automated nation), and Germany, with two out of every three new installations being in Asia which is already the worlds manufacturing hub. To compete with that, the UK urgently needs to stop navel-gazing and modernize.
China robotics: Tech should be based on human need, not vanity
Why? The most recent data from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR.org) shows that industrial robot installations in the UK remain stubbornly low compared to its peers. Just 2,500 industrial robots were installed in the UK in 2020 (0.5% of an estimated world total of 520,900). To underline the point, The World Robot Conference took place in China in September, prompting diginomica to cast its eye over the market there:
According to Chinas National Bureau of Statistics, industrial robot sales in China increased by over 194 percent between 2016 and 2020, from 72,000 units to 212,000. Meanwhile, its service robotics companies earned roughly $8.2 billion in 2020 alone, a year-on-year uptick of 41%.
BEIS report forecasts small robotics gains from massive inaction
Why? By 2035, the uptake of robotics and autonomous systems (RAS) could mean a boost of 6.4 billion ($8.7 billion) in value added to the UK economy. That was according to the governments own estimates in a 110-page report from the department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) in October. This prompted me to ask the obvious question:
Why is the UK only poised to gain a paltry 0.19% to 0.5% of the predicted added global value from robotics ($8.7 billion expressed as a percentage of McKinseys $4.5 trillion and $1.7 trillion estimates)? And in a 14-year rather than four-year timescale? Thats hardly the good news the government thinks it is, when the UK is, by 2021 nominal GDP estimates, still the worlds fifth largest economy. It's summertime for robots, says UK
Why? Because the UK robotics community itself remains as upbeat, innovative, and inspiring as ever, hosting a Summer of robotics events: a three-day Robotics and AI Showcase (RAI21) in May, and the UK Festival of Robotics in June.
All youve been told about driverless cars is wrong!
Why? One of the biggest challenges in Industry 4.0s (ahem) collision of technologies, such as robotics, AI, drones, and driverless vehicles, is the lack of common sense among some innovators. In March, I exposed the fallacy of the futurist view that autonomy is a cure-all for our global infestation of lethal tin boxes aka cars:
The reality is that AVs will massively increase the infestation of tin boxes, its just that humans wont be driving them. [] There would indeed be fewer cars in existence but a huge increase in traffic: by nearly fifty percent. This counter-intuitive outcome is because of the inconvenient truth about private car ownership: the average driver-owned tin box is stationary in driveways and car parks nearly all the time [90%]. But on-demand, autonomous vehicles would be in constant use.
Why urban drone deliveries are an insane idea
Why? My COVID-era grumpiness extended to one application of a great technology, aerial robotics. Delivery drones have been proposed as the ideal solution for sustainable, green, last-mile urban deliveries. But I suggested in September, the reality of mass uptake of drones to deliver small packages in cities would create new types of environmental nightmare.
Just one example:
If only one percent of the packages delivered by just three firms in the US arrived by drone, there would be three times more drones in Americas skies daily than there are passenger planes flying in the entire world.And that would still leave 99 percent of those companies packets being delivered by road, barely denting the problems of urban traffic congestion, air pollution, and greenhouse gases.
The Five Laws of Software Automation
Why? To prevent robots making human life a misery, perhaps what the world needs is an update to Isaac Asimovs Three Laws of Robotics. Cometh the hour, cometh the man: in July Oded Karev, Head of RPA at automation software company, NICE (a reassuring name) published his Robo-Ethical Framework: five new laws for the software robot age:
Not to prevent bots from harming humans so much as to stop humans from harming others with robots or automating corporate crime.
Pandemic tech: Why the pendulum will swing back towards humans
Why? While the pandemic has created a new machine age, according to various 2021 research papers, that transformation may be short lived. At least according to Jefferson Flanders, CEO of edtech provider, MindEdge Learning, in February.
Some restaurants, retailers, banks, and other businesses that have ploughed money into automation and self-service may capitalise on the pendulum swinging back towards human contact, a year after lockdowns stopped the clock on normal operations.
Were facing a low-tech baby boom, he added. Something to think about as we batten down the hatches for the festive period and new year. Chin up, everyone. Merry Christmas and a prosperous, healthy new year.

Automation, accuracy, risk and liability – Lexology

HSBC's 64m fine by the FCA for weaknesses in its automated money laundering detection systems highlights the risks around automation that businesses and their providers need to be aware of.
Digital transformation strategies often involve the automation of existing processes, mapping, optimising and coding human tasks into algorithms that replicate them at scale, at speed, and more accurately.
However, the technology can do exponentially more damage if it goes wrong. While one-off human worker errors can be limited, automation means errors can multiply quickly without oversight, meaning many incorrect transactions occur before the issue is spotted.
Businesses leveraging automation need to be tuned in to the different ways risk can arise. The focus should be put on the design stage of automation deployments, on road-testing processes, and data inputs before live operation. Liability provisions may need to be revisited to ensure it reflects the altered risk profile, e.g. caps based on negative outcomes for the business rather than the number of errors or breaches.
The regulator identified three key areas where the bank had failed: it did not ensure that the scenarios used to identify indicators of money laundering or terrorist activity were appropriate; failed to test and update systems; and did not check that data being put into the system was accurate or complete.

Red Hat brings Ansible hybrid cloud automation to Microsoft Azure – RCR Wireless News

Red Hat promises simplified enterprise hybrid cloud and edge automation for Microsoft Azure customers.
Fresh off an update aimed at hybrid cloud and edge computing environments, Red Hats Ansible automation platform is now deployable through Microsoft Azure asa private preview.
The integration with Azure services, including Azure compute, network and storage can further increase the ROI of automation, allowing customers to scale their IT operations, said Red Hat in a statement.
This helps to remove the infrastructure maintenance and operational burden from IT teams, enabling them to focus purely on delivering automation strategies for a more efficient, flexible and scalable business, said the company.
Ansibles declarative state structure makes it a good fit for devops and Infrastructure As Code (IAC) environments. This makes it a foundational piece for enterprises looking for network provisioning and management capabilities. Ansibles Playbooks automate powerful workflows without requiring specialized programming skills.
Ansible is part of the Linux Fedora distribution owned by Red Hat. Its also available with several Linux builds aimed specifically at enterprises and corporate IT applications.
Red Hat released Ansible Automation Platform 2 in September. The new release adds self-contained automation capabilities specialized for hybrid and edge environments, with greater customization and flexibility.
Red Hat Ansible Business Unit vice president and general manager Joe Fitzgerald called this the decade of automation. He said that Ansible provides automation and governance services for just about every operational aspect of the enterprise.

OpenShift is a commercial cloud software orchestration platform specialized for enterprise cloud. Its a Kubernetes distribution.
Verizon will use Red Hattechnology to automate and orchestrate its 5G network and deploy an open hybrid cloud platform, working together to further 5G enterprise use cases. Verizon is employing Red Hat OpenShift to develop applications like open-source tools and edge computing services.
Red Hat has collaborated with Samsungto deliver 5G solutions. The companies are using Red Hat products throughout the stack. That includes OpenShift, the OpenStack Platform, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ansible and OpenShift Container Storage. Samsungs contributions include a 5G virtualized RAN and core, mobile edge computing solutions, and management and analytics.

Automation and Education Two Keys to Solving Workforce Issues – Healthcare Packaging

CPGs and OEMs came together at Top to Top Summit to discuss current challenges in their operations and workforce was one of the top three issues mentioned.
Top to Top Summit is an annual three-day networking event of high-level executives in the packaging and processing industry, who meet to discuss industry problems and solutions with the aim of improving industry outcome. Sponsored by PMMI, this years meeting (the 15th annual) was held in conjunction with PACK EXPO Las Vegas.
Both groups emphasized that they need to engage their workforce to retain talent. Automation is one way, to eliminate monotonous tasks and free up employees to be redeployed to new areas.
Better education and training is another way, and CPGs specifically asked OEMs to improve remote support (a potential revenue stream for OEMs), train their employees on machine operation, and provide structured training packages for new equipment installations.
End users are citing that they need to promote from within and improve training and career development - including better understanding of how to assist employees through a job transition and understanding the opportunities for labor conversion.
Ensuring that all new OEM built machinery is easy to use for inexperienced employees would help end users overcome problems with recruiting skilled staff, and it was suggested that incorporating LEAN principals (value, value stream, flow, pull, and perfection) into equipment design and layout is just as important as automation to reduce labor requirements.
Other measures to help battle workforce challenges include improving pay and conditions, stop relying on temporary workers and encourage commitment by offering full-time positions, improve flexibility of work locations when possible, and work more closely with schools and colleges to recruit young people.

Booth presentations and technology demos will cover a full range of advanced automation and i4.0 transport technologies at SEMICON West 2021. Rexroths innovative semiconductor technology can help both tool builders and fab operators stay competitive in today's rapidly changing semiconductor manufacturing market, with high-precision automation technology for every segment of the microelectronics supply chain from wafer processing to final device packaging.
Semiconductor and electronics manufacturers have very special automation needs, such as mechatronic modules designed for smooth motion during wafer handling, noncontact material transport through the process chambers and nano-meter scale positioning accuracies.

ctrlX AUTOMATION demo: Booth visitors will have the opportunity to see a three-axis working system that demonstrates the ctrlX CORE and ctrlX DRIVE hardware platform, as well as the ctrlX WORKS engineering and software toolbox. The demo showcases how ctrlX WORKS lets users easily assign ctrlX AUTOMATION apps or their own apps to program everything from single-axis functions to highly complex multiple-axis movements.
For semiconductor and microelectronics manufacturers, this exhibit offers a practical demonstration of how the complete ctrlX AUTOMATION platform supports an open, platform-neutral system architecture that can be easily integrated in any automation infrastructure.
Flexible Transport System demo: Rexroths Flexible Transport System (FTS) is a magnetically propelled pallet transport system engineered to provide more precise pallet positioning and higher transport speeds. The FTS integrates an external noncontact motion system. Coils mounted outside the chamber provide drive power for magnetic carriers that dont require feed-throughs to vacumm. Suited for virtually all load factors, precision levels and motion profiles, it can support both independent and synchronized pallet movements, for more flexible transport sequences, reduced cycle times and faster throughput.
eTools presentation: This exhibit will highlight Rexoths intuitive, easy-to-use LinSelect engineering tools to size and select linear axes and multi-axis systems such as the Smart Function Kit for Handling system. Through videos as well as actual working demos of the LinSelect system, booth visitors will have the opportunity to witness the sizing of a multi-axis system in LinSelect and take the output to Rexroths online configurator for a 3D model. The exhibit will highlight how much time and effort are saved selecting perfectly aligned linear components for many different kinds of linear motion applications in semiconductor manufacturing systems.
Smart Function Kit for Handling demo: The Smart Function Kit for Handling is a preassembled multi-axis mechatronic system with plug-and-produce technology, combining perfectly matched linear modules, connecting elements, servo drives and controls from the Rexroth portfolio.
The hardware demonstration in this exhibit is a multi-axis system that matches the configuration output from the eTools kiosk that resides beside this demo. It provides a full picture of the advantages of the Smart Function Kits plug-and-produce capabilities: Pre-defined multi-axis combinations can be easily sized, configured and ordered as one part number. In addition, the Smart Function Kit for Handling software app allows fast commissioning through autoparameterization of the servo drive.
Precision Modules, Gen 2: The new generation of Rexroth Precision Modules are precise, ready-to-install precision linear motion systems that combine high performance with compact dimensions. This latest generation of these highly successful modules features a sealed ball screw assembly on both sides and an upgraded lubrication concept, to more fully meet the demanding operational requirements of semiconductor production and electronics manufacturing.

GoSecure acquires Covail to enhance AI and automation of its platform – Help Net Security

GoSecure, a provider of Managed Detection and Response (MDR) services, announced the acquisition of Covail.
With cybersecurity alert fatigue affecting the personal life of over 70% of security professionals, throwing more people at the problem is not the answer. Combined with over 75% of enterprise systems having at least one unpatched vulnerability, cybersecurity professionals face overwhelming odds to stay ahead of attackers.
Cybersecurity alerts, incident response, vulnerability patching, regular penetration testing, and understanding security risk are part of the daily routine for todays security professionals, said Neal Creighton, GoSecure CEO. Helping organizations address these issues has been GoSecures goal from day one, and the acquisition of Covail will allow us to be even more effective and efficient in helping customers.
Covail expertise in Artificial Intelligence will augment the GoSecure Titan Platform, allowing for enhanced alert analysis and correlation automation. Due to rapidly changing attack techniques, its imperative to identify suspicious activity quickly but only pass the most critical updates to human threat hunters for final verification. Covails data science team brings years of experience, and over 100 Machine Learning models, to GoSecure for use by the GoSecure Titan Platform.
The addition of Covails AI and ML immediately enhances the GoSecure Titan Platform, allowing our Active Response Center threat hunters to focus their time on the most important alerts, continued Mr. Creighton. We already lead the market with sub-15-minute detection to mitigation, and the Covail capabilities will allow us to drive this number down.
Governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) assessments are also a growing area for both GoSecure and Covail as organizations ask themselves, Are we secure? Combining the two testing and assessment teams, augmented with Covails optimization and automation, will deliver a new level of GRC service for organizations.
Most assessments are point-in-time engagements, leaving the customer with a to-do list to complete, said Rick Miller, GoSecure Chief Operating Officer.
