6 Best Apple CarPlay Shortcuts and Automations You Must Try – Guiding Tech

Posted: at 1:41 am

Apple CarPlay is not simply an interface that lets you play songs or dial one of your contacts from your contact list. This system is capable of much more, especially if you know your way around iOS Shortcuts. From playing your favorite podcasts in the morning to showing you the directions to your home, Apple CarPlay can turn out to be quite 'intelligent.'

Here are the best CarPlay automation and shortcuts that you can try on your car.

The iOS Shortcuts app makes possible plenty of things and helps to streamline your everyday tasks. The good thing is that you can create your Shortcuts as per your preference. Shortcuts come preinstalled if your phone is running iOS 13 or higher.

Shortcuts and Automations are simple If-and-Else statements and can be used to run basic commands.

However, if you are not familiar with the app, it can be initially daunting. We'll walk you through the entire exercise and show you how to enable various CarPlay automation on your iPhone.

How do you like the idea of your car playing your favorite song as soon as you plug in your phone?

With Automations, you can program the phone to play your favorite music when you connect your phone to your car's infotainment system.

Step 1: Open the Shortcuts app and tap on the Automation tab. Select Personal Automation from the menu to see all the 'When' conditions.

Scroll the list until you see the option for CarPlay, and tap to select it.

Once done, select Connect and hit the Next button.

Step 2: Select Play Music from the list. Now, tap on the little Arrow button, and select Shuffle.

Step 3: Tap on the text that says Music to bring up the Media Picker. Here, pick an option from the list like Listen Now or Radio.

Once done, hit the Done button to save the Automation. That's it!

Do you get annoyed by the continuous pings and messages when you drive? If yes, you may want to enable DND mode on your phone when driving.

Like the automation above, enabling DND is simple and easy. The best part is that it kicks into action each time you plug in the phone to your car.

Step 1: Once you have picked CarPlay from the list, swipe up on the screen and tap on the Search bar.

Type DND, and select Focus Mode from the list, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 2: Next, tap on the Off text to change it to On.

The next step is not mandatory. However, if you wish to turn off the DND mode at a particular time, you can set the time by clicking on the Turned Off option.

Having done that, save the settings. Simple, see.

At the same time, you can program Automations to turn off the DND mode when CarPlay disconnects. The process will be same like the one above. The only difference is that you will have to select Disconnect when creating the Automation.

Yes, you read that right. You can play songs from your favorite playlists as soon as you get into your car. Cool, right? The best thing is that setting it up is as easy as pie.

The drill is as usual. You'll have to open Automations and head over to the Actions Page.

Step 1: Swipe up on the Actions screen and select Media.

Step 2: Next, scroll down until you see the option for Get Playlist. Select it, and tap on Playlist to well, choose the playlist of your choice.

Step 3: Under Next Action, select the Play Music option, and that's about it.

Apple CarPlay capable of showing more than just songs and maps. You can enable three screens at a given time.

If you want CarPlay to open the app of your choice, you can now do so.

Step 1: On the Actions screen, select the Open app option and tap on the App text.

Step 2: Choose the app of your choice, and save the settings.

Do you often check the directions to your home before you start driving? If yes, you may want to try this automation, which automatically shows the directions to the destination.

For now, iOS Shortcuts let you choose either Apple Maps or Google Maps (see best Google Maps tips and tricks).

Step 1: On the Actions page, select Apps on the swipe-up screen and pick Maps from the list.

On the next page, select Show Directions.

Step 2: Tap on the Destination and enter your home address.

Once done, tap on Maps and select Google Maps from the list.

You can also program CarPlay to welcome you with the text of your choice, so if you want to feel motivated when you start your day, plug in your phone and let the magic take over.

Setting a welcome message is easy and simple. However, you will need to add a customized script. At the same time, you may want to add a slight delay since CarPlay in itself requires time to boot.

Step 1: Swipe up on the Actions page and search for Wait. Once done, change the timing to 5 seconds.

Step 2: Swipe up on the screen again to bring up the Actions list, and search for Text. Once in, add the Text below the variable.

Now, bring up the menu again and search for Speak Text. The text that you just added will be automatically chosen.

Hit the Play icon to test out this feature. And once done, save the settings and be ready to be welcomed in style.

Demand for dairy automation to increase – The Australian Dairyfarmer

Posted: at 1:41 am

DEMAND for reliable, easy-to-use automation technology is likely to increase as Australian dairy farmers look for production growth during the 2021-22 season.

Dairy Australia's June Situation and Outlook forecast a modest production lift for the year, following a challenging few seasons in drought.

Higher opening milk prices had pushed up confidence and would encourage farmers to revisit on-farm investments.

The outlook said while most regions would see lifts in production, the lack of available workers remained a concern across the country.

Waikato Milking Systems business development manager for Australia Rob Spencer said the situation would encourage farmers to look for ways to automate the milking process.

"Automatic cup removers would have to be the best option for a milking system to gain immediate efficiency and productivity improvements," he said.

"ACRs eliminate one labour unit from the milking process, which means you can direct that person to work elsewhere on the farm for other important tasks."

Waikato Milking Systems ACRs uses a precise, proprietary shut-off valve that accurately detects the end of milking to remove the cups.

"But the operator also has the option of using our robust and time-proven user switch, which can manually remove the cups with ease," Mr Spencer said.

"Our range of automatic cup removers, ECR-S and ECR Plus, can be programmed to detach at a predetermined time or fixed place in platform rotation to avoid over-milking the herd."

The adjustable retraction speed meant the ECRs detached gently from the udder, avoiding any damage to cows' teats at the end of milking time.

"Our Platform Positioning System ensures that any of our ECRs will operate without a hitch on any platform," Mr Spencer said.

Both ECR options can be mounted vertically in rotary and inline milking systems.

"The ECRs can also be mounted in Waikato Swing Arms for inline systems," he said. "The Swing Arms improve cluster alignment and reduce pull on the cups during milking."

Mr Spencer said the system's robust stainless steel chassis and cylinder lasted longer while the swing capability created a clear space for operators to move along the pit. The cylinder had a pulley to make cluster removal smooth and gentle.

"It's very easy to clean and maintain," he said. "All the milk and pulsation tubes are housed inside the main chassis."

The Swing Arm includes AutoSTART as a standard feature.

"All the operator has to do is lift the cluster and attach to the animal," he said. "The rest is completely automated."

Why Customers are Ready for Drive-Thru Automation – QSR magazine

Posted: at 10:07 am

Are consumers ready to eliminate all human interaction when visiting restaurants? Quick-service restaurant owners and operators may be surprised to learn that many guests across demographic groups are ready to take this dramatic step, with one specific subgroup expressing a resounding yes! Due in part to COVID-19, what was once considered a far-fetched ideaeliminating human contact when ordering and receiving a quick-service restaurant or fast-casual mealnow appears to be the consumers expectation for the future.

Before exploring consumer sentiment toward automation, however, lets reflect on how we got here.

COVID-19s twists and turns have forced quick-service restaurant owners and operators to rethink customer-facing and operations technologies, pivoting toward reliance on the drive-thru while also embracing more delivery options, investing in automation and reducing human interaction. These advancements proved to be doubly helpful as labor shortages followed quickly on the heels of strict health and safety protocols.

As helpful as initial technology investments have been, surging drive-thru usagewhich has skyrocketed 43 percentsince April 2020has highlighted the value of moving cars through this channel faster, more accurately and more efficiently.

According to a survey conducted online by Harris Pollon behalf of a a global payments company that helps enable commerce for multi-unit restaurant brands, 65 percent of respondents who visited a drive-thru in the preceding six months had an unpleasant experience and attributed it to understaffing (26 percent), long lines (30 percent), poor staff behavior (36 percent) and other reasons.

Demographics and the desire for automation

Nearly half of respondents to the survey said they would be willing to eliminate all human interaction when visiting a quick-service restaurant, assuming orders are received and fulfilled quickly and accurately. The move towards complete automation will take time, but the fact that half of people who visit drive-thrus are ready to eliminate human interaction entirely from the encounter suggests that more people than ever are primed for contactless experiences.

As quick-service restaurant owners and operators assess how to invest capital in 2022, understanding which customers are open to automation can help them make better-informed decisions. Here are six points to help quick-service restaurants further understand their customers:

The reasons people want automation vary widely, driven by concerns about speed of service (42 percent), health (31 percent) and an overall desire to avoid human interaction (32 percent).

The next technology evolution for quick-service restaurants

The desire for increased automation begs the question: What investments can quick-service restaurants make to deliver a more seamless, contactless experience?

Drive-thru vision technology that helps quick-service restaurantoperators better track what is happening in the drive-thru is one game-changing investment that many are beginning to experiment with today. This technology queues cars on the POS for line busting, provides animated visualizations and enables real-time digital menu board interactions. The technology, which trades magnetic ground loops for camera systems, also provides quick-service restaurantstaff with a true picture of drive-thru timing while enhancing the customer journey. Because the video technology tracks cars and orders them throughout the entire experience, digital menu boards can be repurposed for upselling during line busting operations. Better still, the technology can automate two-lane merges and increase transactions.

AI-enabled voice ordering with natural language processors is another technology that is on the eve of widespread adoption. Voice ordering bots can make upsell recommendations, which are displayed on drive-thru digital menu boards. When the customer orders, speech-to-text functionality automatically inserts the order into the POS. (Of course, a real human can interrupt the system at any time if a customer needs assistance.)

These are just a few technology examples that are beginning to gain traction among larger quick-service restaurants. Other areas of interest include kitchen automation, back-office automation and smart employee scheduling to account for new workforce expectations.

The journey to a fully contactless experience

Achieving full automation is a process and many quick-service restaurants are understandably moving in that direction with careful deliberation and intensive pilot programs. Owners will have to make decisions about the right balance between technology and human interaction based on their individual preferences and brand identity. One thing is for sure, however: Consumers and their beloved quick-service restaurantbrands are not moving backwards to the pre-Covid-19 days. The habits they have adopted over the last two years appear to have staying power, and they will continue to get more comfortable with well-executed automated offerings that are easy to use, fast and protect their health and safety.

Chris Siefken, head of technology, Xenial, a Global Payments Company, lives at the cutting edge of innovation, having led the development of consumer-facing technologies for several companies. He currently heads up the teams that make the technology used by recognizable enterprise restaurant brands around the world.

He has roughly 20 years of technology experience and most recently was the CTO at Beanstalk Data building Loyalty and Marketing applications for the quick-service restaurant industry. Chris holds an Applied Philosophy degree in Computer Science from St Andrews University.

Robotic process automation in 2022 – VentureBeat

Posted: at 10:07 am

Hear from CIOs, CTOs, and other C-level and senior execs on data and AI strategies at the Future of Work Summit this January 12, 2022. Learn more

In 2021, enterprise teams turned to robotic process automation (RPA) to simplify workflows and bring some order to office tasks. The next year promises to bring more of the same sophisticated artificial intelligence and task optimization so more offices can liberate their staff from repetitive chores.

The product area remains one of the poorly named buzzwords in enterprise computing. There are no robots in sight. The tools are generally deployed to fix what was once known as paperwork, but they rarely touch much paper. They do their work gluing together legacy systems by pushing virtual buttons and juggling the multiple data formats so that the various teams can keep track of the work moving through their offices.

Here are the 10 ways that RPA marketplace will shift and adapt in 2022:

The main job for RPA is to knit together some hundreds of legacy systems that now make up the backbone of many companies. The main challenge for each RPA company will be strengthening the connections between systems. That means more modules or bots in the marketplaces and better versions of the existing ones.

One of the major selling points for many RPA vendors is that their tools can come close to programming themselves through what some call process discovery. While this may never be as magic as anyone wants, the tools will continue to simplify this job. It may even approach no-code level automation for some simple tasks.

It seems contradictory to imagine that RPA platforms will simultaneously get easier to program and harder, but these changes will be seen in different levels of tasks. While the interns and managers will be able to automate more simple tasks, the developers will be called to customize the RPAs for more complex integrations. In many cases, RPA tools make good frameworks that sophisticated programmers can revise and extend. The RPA handles 95% of the work and the development team handles the last 5%. This is why some companies are reporting that RPAs are more complicated and expensive to maintain than they thought. Companies are asking them to do more and more sophisticated jobs, and that means bringing in better programming talent.

Craig Le Clair at Forrester Research predicts that every RPA company will either embrace AI or become a dinosaur. While this may never become strictly true, theres no doubt that RPA is one of the simpler vectors for inserting AI into corporate DNA. The standard modules tackle tasks like optical character recognition, machine learning, and machine vision. RPA firms that ship better, smarter AI modules will be able to win more contracts. The accuracy and depth of the AI algorithms will rise in importance.

Some firms need all the cleverness that AI scientists can deliver. Some firms, though, do not. Many of the AI options are aimed at dealing with older, paper interfaces or other tasks that require adaptability. One popular job for AI is to convert paper documents into digital form and then search for relevant data like the invoice number or the expiration date for a drivers license. Some workflows, though, are pretty mature and dont need this extra dose of smarts. Companies that process little paper or dont need the extra intelligence may find theyre not as interested in AI-based innovations.

Not all innovations will be obvious. The machine learning algorithms and machine vision algorithms will continue to learn over the years. The best platforms will be slowly rolling out better versions of the algorithms with better performance, knowing that these algorithms are doing more and more of the work.

The intelligence level is slowly rising at all parts of the stack. Some, for instance, are touting semantic automation to highlight the ability to intuitively understand what jobs must be done. The first generation of RPAs succeeded by simply tying together user interfaces, and that often meant that automation developers needed to know the names and locations of buttons on screens. Semantic automation promises to be smarter about guessing that these buttons do, a process that can help if and when user interfaces are redesigned.

While many cynics dismiss cryptocurrencies and blockchains as solutions looking for problems, theres no doubt that they can bring some assurance and order to workflows. RPA tools will begin to add better cryptographic algorithms to offer better authentication and mathematical certainty. When the workflows link together disparate groups or different companies, good blockchains and trustworthy ledgers can prevent disputes and reduce the need for human intervention.

Good automation saves time, staffing, and energy. Groups charged with saving the environment are noticing that good automation can help. Expect more pitches to explicitly highlight green concerns.

Once the work is flowing through the systems successfully, the various issues and sticking points become more obvious. The idea of governance will become increasingly important to RPA teams, who can begin to worry more about who is authorized and who exerts control over each step.

Some companies and developers make distinctions between marketing terms like intelligent automation, robotic process automation, RPA-plus, low code application platforms and general AI tools. The differences are disappearing as the tools and many of the other options for delivering code converge. Top RPA tools are rapidly adding new intelligent options, making them more capable. Theyre also becoming more adept at process discovery and other low-code and no-code options, making it harder to be certain which acronym to deploy on PowerPoint slides. The software, though, doesnt care what its called.

The Future Of AI Process Automation In Marketing – MarTech Series

Posted: at 10:07 am

In the past several years, marketers have embraced artificial intelligence technologies to automate a broad range of high-volume, data-intensive tasks from ad targeting to image manipulation. The next phase of AI in marketing has the potential to deliver a much larger impact as the focus shifts from the automation of single tasks to more complex business processes and workflows, and ultimately influencing marketing strategy.

Task automation using AI will continue to add value to marketers, but their benefits will be dwarfed by the intelligent automation of complex workflows.

Marketing Technology News: Backblaze Strengthens Leadership With Two New Board Members

To understand the enormous difference between task automation and process automation, consider the evolution of automotive interfaces. In the early 2000s, we started to see basic voice automation in cars. The first systems leveraged simple AI to recognize commands that allowed you to set the temperature of the climate control system or change the radio station. Fast forward 20 years and your in-vehicle (or on-smartphone) navigation system will intelligently guide you through a cross-country trip, make recommendations to change your route based on traffic or weather conditions, remind you to stop and take a break, and constantly monitor systems and sensors within your vehicle and let you know when something needs your attention.

What would that kind of process automation look like to a marketing function? Imagine being able to define your marketing goals, metrics, and strategies and have an intelligent system provide guidance through your marketing journey, recommending your route (campaigns), alerting you when there is bad weather (your campaigns arent doing well, there are new competitive threats), making sure you get to your destination on time (your goals), and alerting you when systems are not performing at peak performance.

This analogy is a painful reminder that when it comes to operational execution of a marketing plan, most of us are still operating in the world of paper maps.

An automated process would need to consider many steps, including:

Marketing Technology News: MarTech Interview with Damien Mahoney, Co-founder and CEO at Stackla

AI task automation has delivered fantastic value to marketers around the world, but the promise of end-to-end process automation is much more compelling. By combining the efficiency of task automation with the broad impact of process automation, marketers can not only deliver marketing at scale, they can also deliver the right marketing at scale.

Bringing it back to the automotive navigation metaphor, its like the difference between going for a drive around town (and potentially getting lost), and completing a multi-stop road trip on time, while avoiding a traffic jam, and never running low on battery charge as your intelligent assistant helpfully guides you along the way.
