How Will Automation Affect London? – London Post

Posted: March 24, 2020 at 5:28 am

As humans, we have been fascinated about using tools to make our lives easier and to get more done for our entire history. Our ancestors invented modern agriculture by using animals for work. Then they created mechanical machinery to create whole new industries.

They developed bicycles, then motorcycles, cars, trains, and planes to get around faster. Then they created computers and the internet to do the mental heavy lifting as well. Automation is not new, but the way we think about it is.

Automation is something that is talked about a lot at present. Were told that automation can make our lives easier, take away mundane tasks that we dont want to do, help us be more efficient, and find new ways for us to entertain ourselves.

Sometimes the claims can seem a little ridiculous, like theyve been taken straight from a science fiction film. Yet some claims and ideas for automation are very much based on reality and are already implemented or could be very soon.

So how will automation affect London and the people that live and work in the city?

Jobs

Of course one major change that automation will bring about is in jobs. Low skilled and repetitive jobs such as those in retail are likely to be at risk. This is a trend that is already happening as self-checkouts replace humans.

Although low-paid jobs are five times more likely to be replaced by a robot, higher-paid jobs will be affected too. Finance jobs (which London has a lot of) will be at risk because robots can do a better job at picking stocks. Automated tracker funds and ETFs, such as those that just replicate the FTSE 100, are growing in popularity. This could see a fall in the number of fund managers.

Talk about a universal basic income to protect people from the changes in the job market have been discussed by governments across the world, and have even been trialled in parts of Europe. This would see people paid a set amount of money by a government each month, regardless of whether they work or not. The idea behind it being that it will let people focus on other volunteering or starting a business. Such a scheme could also help to reduce the number of people using food banks, reversing recent trends which has seen their use increase by 22%.

There will also be new jobs created, people will need to build and maintain robots and other automation equipment. So people may need to retrain to adapt to the changing job market.

Transport

Computers make better risk judgments than humans. They can also communicate and make calculations faster. Since these are all crucial elements of driving, its likely automation will change transport significantly.

It wont just be driving jobs that will be at risk, but automation will be able to speed up journey times and eradicate congestion. The majority of road congestion comes from vehicle volume and the concertina effect. This is when someone at the front of a string of cars brakes gently, which is magnified along the row of cars that results in some having to stop.

Automation will be able to stop all of these, allowing driverless cars to travel closer together and may remove the need for traffic lights. Cars could talk to each other as they approach an intersection, with some slowing down and others speeding up to go through without stopping. Trains too may be able to travel closer together through such a system.

In a crowded city like London, these will be useful in improving journey times and reducing the length of time we all have to spend commuting each day.

Improved Environment

Less stopping and starting by cars will mean reduced CO2 emissions in our cities. However, automation can also help to improve our environment in cities in other ways.

Automation could be used to increase the amount of waste that gets recycled. A recycling centre in North Las Vegas already uses this technology to process 70 tons of material every hour.

Robots may also be able to operate 24/7 indoor food growing factories that could produce more food in less space and with less water. Growing food closer to food populations could also reduce the emissions associated with transport.

A Japanese company called Spread has already built a factory with the ability to produce 21,000 heads of lettuce every single day. It creates what it calls vertical farms, where plants can be grown on racks that are stacked up on top of each other and artificially lit in perfectly controlled environments.

Using these techniques in London would help feed Londoners with more environmentally friendly food while also helping to reduce the waste that they produce.

The effects of automation will only be known for certain when they are realised, however there are plenty of positives that can be taken from the prospects. The main negative, which is the risk to jobs, can also be mitigated by making sure social safety nets and training schemes are in place.

The longtail of travel may get cut off automation is one way to get it back up – Web In Travel

Posted: at 5:28 am

Its hard not to paint a bleak picture of the in-destination experiences sector. Tom Jenkins, CEO of the European Tour Operators Association, called the tour operator business a bloodbath in the jungle.

Rezgo CEO, Stephen Joyce, who spoke at WiT Indie 2020 earlier this month, predicted Covid-19s impact would result in a mass culling of the long tail as more cash-rich operators manage their market share while smaller operators struggle to stay in business long enough for travel demand to finally return.

Asthings settle down, we may see a return of some operators to the space, butbecause of the financial impact this crisis will have on many individuals, there may be a large number of operators who decide to return to the work forceand leave entrepreneurship, and its associated risks behind, said Joyce.

The crisis serves as a bitter reminder for anotoriously offline industry of the critical need to go digital, if their brandis to survive once some level of normality resumes.

At this point, staying inbusiness is the number one priority In the short term, they should make surethey have the basics taken care of like making sure they have a website andtheir Google profile is updated. He also recommended focusing on marketinglocally, shifting their attention to targeting domestic travellers who arelooking for something to do closer to home.

According to BeMyGuest CEO, BlancaMenchaca, the ability to endure this situation alongwith the regeneration of our industry will be dependent on keeping costs to aminimum and automating the essential sales process[A] colossal spotlight hasbeen activated, shining directly on the massive inefficiencies of manualprocesses in our industry The current crisis has only served to furtherhighlight the critical need for automation throughout the attractions, toursand activities industry.

Whilean unfortunate way to learn a lesson on the power of digital, Menchaca arguedthat the dramatic downturn in travel could be an opportunity for experienceproviders to upgrade their offerings and processes in the long run.

Operatorswho were confident in their flourishing business believing they had no need fortechnology are now bearing the very real costs of resource excess. Its timefor agents and operators to take a serious and realistic look at theiroperations and leave the old ways behind them. If nothing else, the Covid-19situation has shown us how critical automation is to saving time and money.

Thisis a great time to prepare for the path back to recovery with a completeoverhaul of outdated, manual methodology, [and get] ready for the upturn, whichwe all know will eventually come.

Fortunately, many technologyproviders are working to develop online tools to help operators manage thistime, in an effort to help the industry get back on its feet. Going forward were giving ourfull commitment to further tech innovations to directly help the industrybounce back, said Menchaca.

BeMyGuest is helping facilitatecancellations and maintain refund records. Rezgo is crediting cancellation fees back to suppliers,to eliminate any additional costs. Klook is implementing flexible policies and processes as well helpingreschedule activities to also minimise operator costs.

Klookis also working closely with tourism organisations and various recoverytaskforces, relaying information between governmental bodies and independentmerchants, to ensure they get any support offered.

While the entireindustry is in unchartered waters and it is easy to be pessimistic, those thatmake it through will be in a new position of strength, so long as they use thistime effectively.

Thebusinesses that do last through this crisis will be stronger because ofit. Once the climate improves and demandreturns, these companies will be a great position to gain new business andreturn to a growth phase, said Joyce.

For example, Questo a real-world exploration game that combines mobile gaming with self-guided tours has undoubtedly seen cancellations and a dip in sales, but is using the lull to develop more quests in preparation for the rebound.

As amarketplace for tours as games, our demand side is driven by supply, and so themore tours we offer, the more our users will playThis way, once this crisis [is] over, our users willhave more content to explore. Sales-wise, we might focus a bit more on shortdistance travellers, said CEO, Alex Govoreanu.

Admittedly, as Questo toesthe line between mobile gaming and in-destination experiences, its digitaloperations inoculate it from the broader consequences of the pandemic faced byothers in the sector. Itsdigital-first approach has naturally let it overcome the hurdle of runningin-destination experiences in just one place.

Being available in multiple destinations is hard, but its a great advantage in times of crisis because it makes the company less fragile. I will advise anyone to analyse their company for finding the true things that could transform their business into an anti-fragile one, said Govoreanu.

How Automated Technology is Transforming Sanitation in Plant Operations – FoodSafetyTech

Posted: at 5:28 am

Food safety remains a top-of-mind concern for food manufacturers, especially considering some of the top recalls in 2019 were caused by bacteria contaminationincluding Listeria and E. coli. Every aspect of the plant operation, from maintenance to executives, to junior staff and quality control, holds both responsibility and concern in producing safe food. Unfortunately, theres a lot at stake when plant operations sanitation programs run into issues, which can cause health threats.

While the rapid explosion of new innovations complements our daily lives in efficiency and convenience, plant operations may find difficulty in keeping up-to-speed with new technology such as robotics, drones and automated applications. When facilities equipment becomes more and more outdated, it poses food safety challenges around cleaning, maintenance and upgrades.

Luckily, in some cases, innovation is becoming much easier to deploy. Opportunities abound for food processing plants to integrate new technologies into their operations to deliver significant returns on investment while simultaneously enhancing sanitation, safety and production efficiency on the plant floor.

There are many pitfalls with older, more traditional cleaning techniques. In a place where cleanliness is critical to food safety and public health around the world, the industry understands sanitation means more than just scrubbing, mopping and wiping. While these are important daily practices to be done around the processing plant, there are still concerns on whether this kind of intermittent cleaning is truly enough to keep surfaces completely sanitizedknowing that continuous cleaning around the clock seems impractical in any facilities.

Unfortunately, there are many areas, some very hard to reach, for bacteria and other pathogens to live and spread around a processing plant. Zone 1, which holds the conveyor belt and other common high-touch points, consistently comes into contact with food, chemicals and humans. However, for processors to reduce the likelihood of contaminated food, they must consider areas outside of Zone 1 as wellincluding employee break rooms, hallways and bathroomsto implement automated sanitation technologies. Additionally, the most common food contaminants, such as Listeria, Salmonella and E. coli, are usually invisible to the naked eye. Therefore, plants need to employ automated technology to continuously kill microscopic bacteria, mold and fungi to prevent regrowth and ensure clean food and equipment.

When looking to upgrade a plant operation facility, automated technology should be top-of-mind. Automated food production technologies solve two main problems: Food safety and sanitation efficiency. Wash-down robotic systems work to prevent food contamination, while other automated robots complete tasks on the production floor such as packaging, transporting and lifting. With the CDC estimating that roughly one in six Americans suffer from foodborne illnesses, the need for improved sanitation design is integral.

In todays age, there are several ways to achieve heightened cleanliness by incorporating automation and robotics into production lines. Slicers, dicers and cutters are manufactured with hygienic design in mind. Smart cleaning equipment can automatically store various cleaning steps. Data tracking applications can monitor sanitation steps and ensure all boxes are checked throughout the cleaning program.

Incorporating antimicrobial LED lighting ensures sanitation is truly integrated into the facilitys designworking continually 24/7 to kill and prevent bacteria, and its growth while also serving a dual purpose of both antimicrobial protection and a proper source of illumination. As is the case with this type of technology, once these lights are installed, it becomes an easy, hands-free way of reducing labor, chemicals and, in many cases, work stoppages.

According to Meticulous Research, the global food automation market is expected to be worth $14.3 billion by 2025. With automation set to explode, its important for leaders in the food and beverage industry to take advantage of safety tech innovations to advance sanitation around the processing plant. Facility upgrades to improve, enhance and automate sanitation could impact food manufacturers in the long-term by decreasing costs, preventing recalls, improving brand value, gaining consumer trust, minimizing risk and impacting the bottom line.

Improvements made in disposable technology could help reduce the spread of foodborne illnesses.

The handheld system features a new software platform, enhanced optical technology and wireless connectivity.

Providing practical and simple solutions are important when promoting adherence.

Advanced technology could help fulfill the consumer desire for more transparency in the food supply.

Does the US tax code favor automation? – Brookings Institution

Posted: at 5:28 am

The U.S. tax code systematically favors investments in robots and software over investments in people, suggests, a paper to be discussed at the Brookings Papers on Economic Activity conference March 19. The result is too much automation that destroys jobs while only marginally improving efficiency.

The paperDoes the U.S. Tax Code Favor Automation by Daron Acemoglu and Andrea Manera of MIT and Pascual Restrepo of Boston Universitysystematically documents the lopsided tax treatment of capital and labor. The authors then focus on potential fixes, particularly on reducing bonus depreciation, which allows businesses to immediately write off a large portion of their investments in automation rather than over its useful life.

We find that the U.S. tax system favors excessive automation. In particular, the heavy taxation of labor and low taxes on capital encourage firms to automate more tasks and use less labor than is socially optimal.

Compared with effective labor taxes that stand above 28.5 percent, the effective tax rate on capital invested in equipment and software has declined to about 5 percent today, largely as a result of favorable depreciation provisions in a series of tax laws enacted from 2002 through 2017 under the George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump administrations, the paper said. Ideally, the authors analysis suggests, labor should be taxed at 9 percent and capital at 22 percent.

Most importantly we find that the U.S. tax system favors excessive automation. In particular, the heavy taxation of labor and low taxes on capital encourage firms to automate more tasks and use less labor than is socially optimal, the authors write.

They link a variety of negative economic trends to excessive automation, including a decline in labors share of income from non-farm businesses (63.6 percent in 1980 and 56.6 percent in 2017), only modestly higher inflation-adjusted wages for the median worker (up 16 percent over the 37-year period), and lower wages for less-skilled workers (down 6 percent for men with a high school diploma, for instance).

Eliminating the capital bias in the tax code, the authors estimate, would raise the number of employed people by 6.5 percent and increase labors income share by 1.1 percentage points. More-modest reforms could still increase employment by 1.9 to 2.9 percentage points.

The authors point out that not all increased automation hurts workers. In particular, investing in efficiency-enhancing technology in automated industries where workers have already been displaced would benefit the remaining workers.

They also point out that higher corporate income taxes and lower depreciation allowances could be more effective in addressing excessive automation than increasing taxes on wealthy individuals.

The beauty of getting rid of distortions in the tax system is that you are leaving automation decisions in the private sector but you are getting rid of artificial incentives, created by bonus depreciation, to adopt less-than-worthwhile automation, Professor Acemoglu said an interview with Brookings.

David Skidmore authored the summary language for this paper. Becca Portman assisted with data visualization.

Topgolf Automation Systems Keeps the Focus on Fun – TechDecisions

Posted: at 5:28 am

Topgolf Entertainment Groups venues connect communities of fans in meaningful ways through technology, entertainment, food and beverage, and the belief that Topgolf is an entertainment destination where one can discover common ground no matter the occasion.

Topgolf venues feature high-tech gaming, climate-controlled hitting bays, a chef-driven menu, hand-crafted cocktails, music, corporate and social event spaces, and more. Topgolf venues entertain more than 20 million guests annually at nearly 60 locations across the U.S. and internationally.

In order to offer guests the ultimate sports and entertainment experience across all venues, the company sought to enhance its technology platform by transitioning from consumer televisions to immersive and durable commercial displays. These digital displays are a key component within Topgolfs multi-level complexes.

Topgolf searched for an advanced video and content distribution system to enhance the Topgolf experience for customers and employees alike. The goal was to create a customizable display solution with a longer shelf life and an exceptional warranty.

Upgrading from consumer TVs to commercial displays and software would solve the end-of-life problem and improve the longevity of the units themselves. Additionally, expenditure on replacement units would decrease and reliability would increase while guests enjoy a real-time, dynamic visual solution.

With a growing number of venues, Topgolf wanted to identify digital signage and software solutions that would be durable, reliable and allow simultaneous control of content delivery and display management in an innovative fashion. The displays would need to accurately and clearly present the rich colors and vivid details, while splitting the screen into three sections to accommodate varying content needs.

More importantly, the displays would need to seamlessly connect to one another for quick, easy use from a central location.

Topgolf enlisted SAVI Controls, LG Business Solutions, and commercial integration partner Diem Digital, to create a solution called SAVI Canvas. This software was developed by the SAVI Controls team to run exclusively on LGs webOS Signage platform, an operating system that is embedded across its smart commercial displays.

Diem Digital has been providing turn-key AV control solutions to Topgolf for nearly a decade, previously on consumer-grade televisions and now on commercial-grade digital signage displays. More than 10,000 LG webOS displays have now been installed in more than 50 Topgolf venues.

SAVI Canvas combined the power of SAVI Controls with LGs webOS technology to enable Topgolf to control, manage and deliver content to displays at each venue all over a single network cable. This provided the required nucleus to build a one-of-a-kind solution with a significant amount of flexibility for Topgolf. This solution also met Topgolfs need for a tri-pane display feature that can simultaneously show DIRECTV programming, digital signage content and the Topgolf game on a single portrait display.

On the front end, the user interface provides great options; for instance, a manager can use facility view to quickly and easily control all the different displays throughout the venue, says Byron Baird, Vice President, Sales, SAVI Controls.

SAVI developed new custom mounts and enclosures which LG certified for warranty purposes, providing Topgolf improved ongoing service and support for the display hardware.

Topgolf now has the flexibility to display broadcast programs, Topgolf TV, marketing messaging, and custom content from its gaming systems, including Toptracer, within the tri-pane solution. All of which further elevates the guest experience.

LG is the best partner weve ever had, said Derek Wilson, President, Diem Digital. Weve worked with many different companies, but until now have never had someone by our side who truly works with us as a team member to pull off everything you see at the Topgolf venue. Its cutting-edge technology that nobody can touch.

Since deploying the solution at more than 50 locations, Topgolf has seen significant benefits, heard positive feedback and achieved unprecedented innovation.

When you get to know the Topgolf and LG business models, you understand that it is all about the customer experience, says Craig Rathbun, Senior Enterprise Account Manager, LG Business Solutions USA. Its thinking through how to bring better functionality, better user experience, more graphics, enhanced colors, and all of that energy and excitement to the table.

The implementation of the LG displays and SAVI Canvas solution not only enabled Topgolf to manage displays remotely, but also significantly reduced the failure rate and replacement labor overhead of previous consumer displays.

One specific benefit of this groundbreaking collaboration is that Topgolf is now able to introduce new virtual games, Ball Flight Track and Jewel Jam, with its Toptracer ball flight tracing technology that appears in one of the three panes within the LG display.

Enhancements like this support Topgolfs overall goal of enhancing the customer experience with the best entertainment options. Topgolf continues to add new games that are currently in beta testing and development, thanks to the innovation developed by LG and SAVI Controls.

Its really been a very collaborative process; theres never been a dull day, constantly evolving, constantly looking for ways to innovate and tie all of our technology and experiences together, said Scott Shultz, Director of Infrastructure and Venue Technology, Topgolf.

All partners agree the collaboration is a game-changing, win-win scenario for the Topgolf organization. Customers continue to enjoy the ability to keep up with sports and other TV programs, while at the same time, having a fantastic, unique entertainment experience, and Topgolf enjoys a platform that helps the company to achieve its business goals and high standards of performance and aesthetics.

Are You Looking for a High-Growth Dividend Stock? Rockwell Automation (ROK) Could Be a Great Choice – Yahoo Finance

Posted: at 5:28 am

Whether it's through stocks, bonds, ETFs, or other types of securities, all investors love seeing their portfolios score big returns. However, when you're an income investor, your primary focus is generating consistent cash flow from each of your liquid investments.

While cash flow can come from bond interest or interest from other types of investments, income investors hone in on dividends. A dividend is that coveted distribution of a company's earnings paid out to shareholders, and investors often view it by its dividend yield, a metric that measures the dividend as a percent of the current stock price. Many academic studies show that dividends make up large portions of long-term returns, and in many cases, dividend contributions surpass one-third of total returns.

Rockwell Automation in Focus

Headquartered in Milwaukee, Rockwell Automation (ROK) is an Industrial Products stock that has seen a price change of -33.35% so far this year. The industrial equipment and software maker is paying out a dividend of $1.02 per share at the moment, with a dividend yield of 3.02% compared to the Industrial Automation and Robotics industry's yield of 0.79% and the S&P 500's yield of 2.67%.

Taking a look at the company's dividend growth, its current annualized dividend of $4.08 is up 5.2% from last year. Over the last 5 years, Rockwell Automation has increased its dividend 5 times on a year-over-year basis for an average annual increase of 10.41%. Any future dividend growth will depend on both earnings growth and the company's payout ratio; a payout ratio is the proportion of a firm's annual earnings per share that it pays out as a dividend. Rockwell Automation's current payout ratio is 48%. This means it paid out 48% of its trailing 12-month EPS as dividend.

Looking at this fiscal year, ROK expects solid earnings growth. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2020 is $8.73 per share, representing a year-over-year earnings growth rate of 0.69%.

Bottom Line

Investors like dividends for a variety of different reasons, from tax advantages and decreasing overall portfolio risk to considerably improving stock investing profits. But, not every company offers a quarterly payout.

For instance, it's a rare occurrence when a tech start-up or big growth business offers their shareholders a dividend. It's more common to see larger companies with more established profits give out dividends. Income investors have to be mindful of the fact that high-yielding stocks tend to struggle during periods of rising interest rates. With that in mind, ROK is a compelling investment opportunity. Not only is it a strong dividend play, but the stock currently sits at a Zacks Rank of 3 (Hold).

AUSTIN, Texas, March 23, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- At a time when the hiring landscape is changing quickly, Talroo is offering free marketing automation to healthcare companies to boost interest and attendance in online interviews and events. As some sectors of the economy inevitably pause hiring based on the Coronavirus outbreak, other sectors like healthcare, logistics, delivery, and more are ramping up to meet demand. With much of the countrys workforce adjusting to working from home and now being reliant on online communication tools, the hiring process is also moving online. Talroo aims to use its automated communication module from its Talroo Events product to support the healthcare markets most time-sensitive and vital hires.

With the recent urgency to move to hosting virtual events and online interviewing, more companies are relying on Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Hangouts, and other tools to get a face-to-face connection with candidates. Other companies have been using platforms like Brazen, HireVue, or ModernHire for online interviewing and hiring already. No matter what software recruiters are using, Talroo can make that investment more worthwhile by boosting attendance to those online events whether they are webinars, video interviews, or open office hours. Talroo automates regular email and text communication with candidates, so recruiters dont have to spend time manually contacting people and reminding them of their events. There is also a free sharing function that enables employers to push to their social networks at no extra cost.

If healthcare companies need more candidates to interview, Talroo can also help more than 64 million healthcare job searches happen each month on Talroos network.

Were in uncharted waters with how COVID-19 will effect hiring in the long term. Short term, however, its clear that vital services still need to be provided, and some companies, especially in healthcare, will need to move to scalable on-demand methods to improve hiring efficiency. Talroo intends to support our partners in any way possible over the weeks and months to come, said CEO Thad Price.
