BT demos automated agriculture using robots and IoT – FreshPlaza.com

Posted: at 2:42 pm

BT has announced the successful deployment of a robotics platform and management system to support the agricultural project Robot Highways, enabling a fleet of robots to help automate the farming process.

Robot Highways is a project led by agricultural robot specialist Saga Robotics, aiming to explore the use of robots and automation to increase the efficiency of soft fruit agriculture. The plan is for various robots to perform several essential, energy-intensive physical farm processes such as picking and packing fruit and treating crops to reduce critical pests and diseases, all while being powered by renewable energy.

In turn, the additional data generated by these robots can allow for more accurate forecasting, better business insights, and reduced agricultural waste for the farms.

Additional partners for the project are the University of Lincoln, Berry Gardens Growers Ltd, Clock House Farm, University of Reading, and the Manufacturing Technology Centre, alongside BT. It is funded by Innovate UK, the non-departmental public body that provides funding to stimulate and support business-led innovation.

Making this smart farming vision a reality will be no small feat. High-quality connectivity infrastructure will be paramount to enabling the required IoT environment, and this is where BT comes in. The operator has developed and tested the edge and cloud architecture that will be used to support this IoT infrastructure, though details of the specific technology provided were not announced.

Were delighted to be part of the Robot Highways project to demonstrate how BT can help the agricultural sector to automate by integrating robotics and other solutions on a single platform. As a leader in network-based platforms and edge infrastructure, we are ideally placed to support advanced robotic farming operations, said John Davies, Chief Researcher at BT.

Supporting agriculture has become an increasingly important focus for BT in recent years. For example, BT has been providing connectivity and support for Intelligent Growth Solutions (IGS), a Scottish agriculture firm specializing in TCEA (Total Controlled Environment Agriculture). IGS has built a vertical farm, with crops stacked on top of one another, with each crops specific microclimate managed digitally through mobile devices.

BT is not alone in its agricultural interest. Italian operator TIM, for example, last year partnered with a vineyard in Piedmont Langhe to provide 5G coverage and help enableautomation and drone deployment.

The vendors also want their share of this agricultural opportunity. Particularly with the advent of private networks and telecoms vendors potentially offering digital services and solutions directly to agricultural players, Huawei, for example, announced last year that they were deploying an AI solution to a Chinese pig farm, capable of monitoring the condition of each individual animal.

Mihir Shukla, CEO Of Automation Anywhere: Creating Digital Coworkers For Every Employee – Forbes

Posted: October 13, 2022 at 1:05 pm

Mihir Shukla, CEO at Automation Anywhere

Automation Anywhere provides a cloud automation platform to automate end-to-end business processes. The company has over 2,400 employees worldwide and is a leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant. I spoke with founder and CEO Mihir Shukla about his vision for automation, the current state of the industry, and how his leadership has evolved since founding the company in 2003.

Karen Walker: When you founded this company almost 20 years ago, everything was so different in terms of automation. What was your vision then?

Mihir Shukla: Twenty years ago, in a different role, I traveled to many parts of the world. I saw millions of people sitting in cubicles, and a considerable part of their jobs was very mechanical - copying and pasting from one screen to another. I said to myself, We werent put on the planet to do this. This is not a human thing to do. It is very robotic.

Im very passionate about unleashing human potential. Ive always believed that talent is evenly distributed, but opportunity is not. My vision at that time was to unleash human potential by allowing every company to build a digital workforce with a digital coworker for every employee.

Walker: There is a great demand today for the workforce to do more and more. But even with an increased focus on profitability for many companies, we do need to be more effective about how we provide meaningful jobs for our workforce.

Shukla: That's right. We must rethink how we use people and where to use automation.

Walker: I know that part of what you've set out to do is around workforce transformation. Can you give some examples of how that has occurred through automation?

Shukla: Take a bank where you have knowledge workers in every retail branch and in the back office and mid-office in various functions. One such bank asked us, How do we transform this 180-year-old bank into a digitally operating bank where every worker has a digital coworker? When you walk into this bank's branch and you want to open an account, the employee is not going to take all the information, type in every field and make sure it's been typed correctly.

They're going to press a few buttons. And the bots will do most of the work for them. That allows the employees to be more engaged with the customer and to understand their needs better. This now happens across hundreds of processes for this bank. They operate with about 30,000 knowledge workers, all enabled with a digital coworker. It has completely changed the culture of the bank.

Walker: Better for the employee, better for the customer, and better for the company overall. I know that the buzzword in automation in the last few years has been robotic process automation (RPA). Could you talk about the trends in RPA and the state of the RPA market today?

Shukla: RPA is how this trend started. Today, it has gone much further to what we call an intelligent automation platform. The platform now allows you to discover processes using artificial intelligence automatically. It enables you to digitize documents and make sense of records. The resulting data gives you amazing insights about how your work is developing and where it could be improved.

In the last two years, the trends in this area have grown significantly. For example, 90% of business leaders tell us that they're using automation to help address the staffing shortages.

Even with the way economy is today, where budgets are tight, 77% of the companies have decided to increase their funding for automation. So, they may be cutting elsewhere, but they're using automation to be more efficient.

The other trend is the growth of the cloud in automation. Ninety-two percent of the customers that we speak to say they have a cloud-first approach to automation.

People realized that it is more seamless to scale and utilize hybrid work models on a cloud. Weve seen a 700% increase in our cloud operations.

Walker: For leaders who want to adopt intelligent automation, where do they start?

Shukla: The first thing I would tell them is to realize this is not a nice to have -this is a must have for every organization today.

It is always a partnership between business and IT, and it takes leadership. Once you decide that there is no other choice but to adopt automation, then the question becomes how to bring everybody along. Where do you stack, and how do you scale?

To bring everyone along, we must top-down mandate the adoption of automation- first strategies. Then, we must educate employees using our communities and learning programs.

I would mention one more thing. The world has changed today, and employees are now taking a job based on which company will allow them to work with automation.

Many employees, especially those who are young, want careers not just jobs. They will often pick a position if it allows them to work with automation and creates a fulfilling career path. Employees know that when you work with automation or create automation for yourself, you get paid better.

Walker: You've been the CEO now at Automation Anywhere for almost 20 years. How and why have you personally developed your skills during those 20 years?

Shukla: I would say that it starts with curiosity. I'm a software engineer by education, but I was curious about hundreds of other functions. I wanted to understand how the world operates.

Along the journey, I acquired the skills to articulate a compelling vision, allowing people to see what a good change looks like and why this change is better. Then, the skills led to inspiring people, creating systems, processes, and centers to channel human energy towards that better picture.

Walker: The tagline for my consulting business is up and to the right because that's the spot on the two-by-two matrix where we always want to be, as you know, from your experience as a magic quadrant company. Did you have a moment where you knew you were moving in that direction?

Shukla: I never wanted to be a CEO. I always thought about what impact I wanted to create, what change I wanted to bring, and what values I wanted to represent. Somewhere on that journey, different job titles emerged, eventually leading to CEO.

If you're adding value to the world and to your customers, amazing things happen.

In my role, I visit many customers, and walk the floors of their operations. During the first few years, I would invariably ask every employee of a customer, Now that you use automation, would you ever go back?

Their eyes would light up and they said, Never, ever. When you see that light in their eyes, you know that as a leader, you don't have a choice. Every enduring change has that quality.

Thanks to AI, you can now create automations in Power Automate by simply describing them – TechCrunch

Posted: at 1:05 pm

Power Automate, Microsofts Power Platform service that helps users create workflows between apps, is getting new AI smarts. During its Ignite conference, Microsoft rolled out capabilities powered by OpenAIs Codex, the code-generating machine learning system underpinning GitHub Copilot. Starting today (in public preview), Power Automate users can write what they want to automate in natural language and have Codex generate suggestions to jumpstart the flow creation.

Its Microsofts latest move to more tightly integrate the various technologies from OpenAI, the San Francisco AI startup in which it has invested $1 billion, into its family of products. Two years ago, Microsoft introduced a Power Apps feature that used GPT-3, OpenAIs text-generating system, to create formulas in Power Fx, Power Platforms programming language. Microsoft also continues to evolve Azure OpenAI Service, a fully managed, enterprise-focused platform designed to give businesses access to OpenAI innovations with governance features.

Our goal is that anywhere in the ecosystem that a person would need to write code they have the flexibility to start with natural language too, and Codex is core to that strategy, Stephen Siciliano, VP of Power Automate, told TechCrunch in an email interview. [These are] new tools that will help users eliminate tedious work and free up time for workers to focus on more high value projects.

Using the new Codex-powered tool, Power Automate users can describe the type of workflow automation theyd like to create in a sentence. Codex will then translate this into flow recommendations, which when set up with the appropriate connectors can be fine-tuned within Power Automates flow designer to create an automated workflow.

Siciliano says that the feature will support key Microsoft 365 connectors at launch, and that there will be additional integrations in the coming months.

We have fine-tuned Codex primarily with the thousands of templates that we have for Power Automate cloud flows today, he added. Originally, Codex was trained on billions of lines of public code in languages like Python and JavaScript to suggest new lines of code and functions given a few snippets of existing code. These templates are a combination of Microsoft-built and community submitted scenarios, so they cover a breadth of use cases and everything from very simple to more advanced flows.

When asked about the longer-term roadmap, Siciliano declined to reveal much. But he suggested that Codex might come to more places within Power Platform in the future.

[T]here are many different places in the Power Platform where natural language may be useful, so youll see a broader rollout, he continued. Moreover, we will continue to enhance the accuracy of the [system] over time as well.

The new Codex-Power Automate integration dovetails with enhancements to AI Builder, which also landed this morning. (AI Builder, a built-in Power Automate feature, lets users add AI capabilities and models to automated flows.) AI Builder now offers users the ability to train AI systems on the data they might want to extract from documents, allowing Power Automate to pull data in freeform documents such as contracts, statements of work and letters, even from tables that span several pages. Microsoft says the document-processing capabilities of AI Builder now support 164 languages, including handwritten Japanese.

ABB survey reveals re-industrialization ‘at risk’ from global education gap in automation – Robotics and Automation News

Posted: at 1:05 pm

A global ABB survey has revealed a growing trend in US and European businesses towards re-shoring or nearshoring operations to build resilience in the face of global challenges but at the same time, a significant education gap in the skills necessary for these strategies to succeed.

Sami Atiya, president of ABBs Robotics and Discrete Automation Business, says: The world is constantly evolving businesses are shifting existing structures and adopting new technologies to future-proof their operations for a variety of challenges and uncertainties, with robotic automation playing a key role.

We need significant investment in continuous education to prepare our existing and future workforce to thrive in an age of robotics and automation, important not only to prepare for the widespread shifts we are seeing, but to create prosperous societies going forward.

ABBs 2022 survey of US and European business leaders revealed that 74 percent of European and 70 percent of US businesses are planning to re- or nearshore operations to build their supply chain resilience in response to labor shortages, the need for a more sustainable global footprint and global uncertainty.

The majority of these businesses view automation as the enabler of these shifts, with 75 percent of European and 62 percent of US businesses surveyed planning to invest in robotics and automation in the next three years to facilitate this shift in operations.

Despite this appetite for automation, ABBs 2022 global education survey found a significant gap in the education and training needed to ensure the skills necessary for work in the increasingly connected and automated workplaces of the future.

Of the global education professionals surveyed, 80 percent believe robotics and automation will shape the future of employment in the next ten years, while only one in four education institutions currently use robots as part of their teaching programs.

To help bridge the skills gap, ABB has bolstered its global Robotics and Automation education program with new training centers, including its 100 m global innovation and training campus in Austria.

The new site, along with other new regional training centres in the UK, Berlin and Brazil expands ABBs training facilities to over 40 sites globally, educating more than 30,000 students from schools, colleges and universities, as well as apprentices and workers each year.

The sites add to ABBs existing educational offering, which consists of software packages, including ABBs Wizard Easy programming, RobotStudio and RobotStudio AR Viewer App, as well as hardware in the form of collaborative robot cells and application packages.

Through more than 100 global partnerships with schools and universities, ABB generates curriculum materials with education providers to help educate future generations and prepare them the jobs of tomorrow.

Atiya says: Change needs to happen now.

As companies turn to robotic automation to offset labor shortages, improve efficiency and increase resilience, workers need the skillsets to use automation to perform their jobs and augment their own roles.

Businesses need to join forces, cooperating with education institutions and Governments to ensure that society is prepared for jobs of the future. Only through this can we fully utilize flexible automation and unlock value from the ongoing re-industrialization.

ABBs survey highlights the critical need to promote the teaching of robotics and automation skills. Compliance is an all or nothing game. An organization either complies with data protection regulations to the letter or it gets hit with fines mercilessly. However, the complexity of the regulatory landscape and a shortage of cybersecurity professionals makes it difficult to reduce risk.

Yesterday, security and compliance automation platform Vanta announced it has raised $40 million as part of an extension to a series B funding round that closed in June, which valued the company at $1.6 billion.

Vantas solution provides organizations with help to meet compliance standards including SOC 2, HIPAA, and the GDPR.

This funding round reinforces that automation is the key to remaining compliant in an era of sprawling data protection regulations, from the GDPR to the California Consumer Protection Act (CCPA).

The announcement comes shortly after Sephora and Meta received steep fines for violating the CCPA and the GDPR respectively.

While these are isolated situations, most organizations recognize the need to comply with data protection regulations, but lack the in-house resources and expertise to secure their environments.

Trying to prevent security incidents and implement data controls manually is often impractical for these organizations, leaving them open to cyberattacks and regulatory fines.

The answer to this predicament isnt necessarily to bolt-on compliance as an afterthought, but to build automated processes from the ground up so that security teams can scale to secure their environments at a high level, in compliance with the necessary regulatory frameworks.

Today, businesses have to think about security and compliance from Day 1, said Christina Cacioppo, CEO of Vanta.

Most cant afford to hire somebody full-time, but the cost of getting it wrong is huge. Vanta levels the playing field for software companies in a downturn, helping them win business and prove their compliance with less spend overall. Were honored to have industry leaders like CrowdStrike support Vanta as a next-generation security company, Cacioppo said.

Vanta provides users with auditor-vetted controls and the capability to audit their environments for compliance gaps, for regulatory frameworks including SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, PCI DSS, GDPR and CCPA, that speed up the certification process and reduce the risk of non-compliance.

Polaris Market Research anticipates that the enterprise governance, risk and compliance software market will be worth $97 billion by 2028 as more organizations look to get compliance sprawl under control.

One of Vantas main competitors in the market is Drata, a compliance platform that enables enterprises to automatically monitor data protection controls, identifying gaps in complying with regulatory frameworks including SOC 2, ISO 27001, and HIPAA. Drata most recently announced raising $100 million in series B funding round.

Another competitor is HyperProof, which raised $16.5 million as part of a series A funding round earlier this year, for an automated compliance platform for managing internal controls, automating audit processes and workflows, and assessing compliance posture.

At this stage, Vanta is aiming to differentiate itself from other providers by helping organizations enhance their compliance standing on insights taken from other companys compliance journeys.
