Moving on from prolific 2018 class, inexperienced Ascension Episcopal volleyball maturing quickly – The Advocate

Posted: September 20, 2019 at 3:43 am

Its a new chapter for Ascension Episcopal volleyball, as coach Jill Braun described it, and that may sound like a typical sports clich you hear from coaches when a team is hit hard by graduation.

But for the Blue Gators, that phrase couldnt be more accurate. In fact, its more like a new book.

Because how do you replace eight seniors, six of who were starters since they were freshmen? Another, Addie Vidrine, started as a seventh-grader.

Over the past five years, that group helped Ascension reach the Division V state championship game four times, including last year.

Braun isnt pretending that she can replace that lost leadership. When she preaches to her returning players about creating their identity, she means it. The biggest hurdle the Blue Gators are having to overcome is just learning how to play with each other because many of them have never done so.

Weve talked all summer and into the start of the year that it was going to be a little bit of a slower start just as were gelling together and figuring each other out as a team, Braun said. Im really starting to see those things come to fruition in the last week.

Like I keep telling the kids, we dont have to be our best in September. We need to be our best in November. So its a process and a journey.

To Brauns credit, shes embraced the challenge of molding a new team with new personalities.

Change always promotes growth, Braun said, so I was definitely excited about this season.

The new personnel isnt the only change the Blue Gators are undergoing. After being a staple of the Division V final over the last half decade, Ascension has moved up to Division IV, which also features area powers like Notre Dame and Lafayette Christian.

The good news is Ascension isnt void of experience for this voyage into a higher classification. Abby Hall, a sophomore outside hitter who had 16 assists in a semifinal win against Central Catholic last year, returns. So does right-side hitter/middle blocker Jordan Berube, one of eight seniors on this years team.

Abby Hall has a strong arm on the outside, Braun said. Shes a six-rotation, all-around player. She brings that consistency as far as offensively and defensively. Jordan Berube has been great vocal team leader recently. She kind of keeps everybody in the game.

I actually have eight seniors again, Braun added. So they may not be very seasoned, but theyve been in the program for a long time. So were not rebuilding. Were just giving some kids some spotlight that have kind of been behind that group from last year.

Ascension has also added a gifted player to its rotation. Jenai Stevens, a 6-foot senior middle blocker, moved to Lafayette last year after attending The Dunham School in Baton Rouge. Stevens is a two-time all-district first-teamer and was the districts MVP in 2017.

Braun describes Stevens, a Division I-level prospect, as impactful. Her experience playing at a program like Dunham, which reached the Division V quarterfinals last year, certainly doesnt hurt.

(Stevens family) moved to Lafayette last winter, so she played travel ball here in the Lafayette area, Braun said. So she comes to us with a lot of talent.

There is one area where Ascension is particularly young, though talented. The Lady Blue Gators new 5-1 setter is Brauns daughter, eighth-grader Kira Braun.

Shes been very impressive, Jill said. She does play travel for me, but she has earned the right and done a fantastic job leading our varsity team this year even though shes in eighth grade.

As of Thursday, Ascension wass off to a 4-1 start, having won four straight matches after dropping its opener to Division III runner-up E.D. White. As Braun suspected, the inexperienced Blue Gators havent been perfect from the jump, but theyre quickly maturing.

I feel like this week we really progressed by leaps and bounds with the little things we were trying to get our offense running smoother, Braun said. We had some passing issues early, and we are doing much better. Ava Breaux plays in the back row as a (defensive specialist), and Annie Mouton is now our libero. Both of those girls have done a good job improving our passing in the last couple of weeks.

Borderlands 3 Ascension Bluff Gem Door – How to Unlock – GosuNoob.com

Posted: at 3:43 am

Gem door in Ascension Bluff is one of the mysterious locked doors in Borderlands 3. Its a wooden door with a big orange gem in the middle. We found one in the northern part of the map, but weve heard theres more of them. There isnt a button prompt when you approach them, and the game doesnt even acknowledge the fact theyre locked. If youre wondering how to open Ascension Bluff gem door in Borderlands 3, keep reading, and well list all the things people have tried.

At this point, nobody knows how to open the locked door in Ascension Bluff. If you look at the map, youll see theres an arena behind them, so they definitely can be opened. The fact theres no prompt or message when you approach them makes us think theyll open automatically once the requirements have been fulfilled.

What those requirements are is anyones guess. Theres talk of Eridian writings being part of the requirements, but people whove deciphered them all can confirm that is not the only requirement. Getting a 100% completion on the map by doing the crew challenges, discovering named locations, completing side quests, opening red chests and such, doesnt seem to unlock them either. Some people have even tried shooting at them with the Eridian Fabricator (the gun gun), but nothing happened.

One thing that might work is completing the Eridian Trials. Were not sure what these are exactly they might be Proving Grounds arenas, or the quests that appear once youve deciphered all of the slabs on a given planet. Were going to keep investigating this issue, and well update the guide as soon as we know more. If you know something we dont, be sure to leave a comment.

Weve seen footage of people getting behind the door by driving their car off a cliff. Its an empty arena, and some suspect its going to be the location of a boss fight in a future DLC or update.

Ascension prepares for Tropical Storm Harvey; some pumps could … – The Advocate

Posted: at 4:20 am

Ascension Parish officials said Thursday they will "max out" the fuel for the parish's critical east bank pumping stations and will install additional portable pumps in neighborhoods known for flooding problems in preparation for Tropical Storm Harvey.

Meanwhile, parish officials are monitoring inland waterway and low-lying areas to determine when to start pumping operations and expect one of those stations, in Sorrento, could fire up as soon as Thursday afternoon.

Ascension Parish President Kenny Matassa has ordered portable pumps for the Buxton subdivision in St. Amant, the Southwood subdivision in Gonzales and the Astroland subdivision near Darrow, parish officials said in a statement.

Martin McConnell, spokesman for parish government, said those pumps are on standby and will be delivered as needed.

"We're ready to be ready," McConnell said.

Harvey, which was upgraded last night from a tropical depression to a tropical storm, is expected to hit the south-central Texas coast between late Friday and early Saturday and be a "major hurricane" with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph, the National Hurricane Center reported Thursday morning. But the storm is expected to stall in the mid-Texas coast and drop12 to 20 inches of rain, with isolated amounts of 30 inches possible in some areas.

Southwest and central Louisiana could see 5 to 12 inches of rain from the system, the Hurricane Center said.

In Baton Rouge and New Orleans, rainfall estimates were between 4 and 6 inches on Thursday morning. In the Baton Rouge area, that's potentially slightly less than earlier forecasts from Wednesday, which had top-end rainfall amounts at 10 inches.

Parish public works and homeland security officials have begun filing and transporting sandbags to fire stations.

Though some parts of populous eastern Ascension rely on gravity alone for drainage, most of that side of the parish counts on two major pump systems to move water: the Marvin J. Braud Pumping Station in the McElroy Swamp in the farther southeast of the parish and the Sorrento pump station inside the town of the same name.

Additional pumps are also at the Henderson Bayou floodgate in Galvez, but those pumps' function differs from that of the parish's other stations. Those pumps are only used when backwater flooding happens and the floodgate must be closed. In those conditions, the parish uses the pumps to keep up with rainfall trapped behind the closed gate.

Barca in freefall as Madrid continues ascension – Soccity (blog)

Posted: August 20, 2017 at 6:28 pm

Not so long ago, it seemed as though nothing could impede the Barcelona-Real Madrid rivalry. When in June 2015 Barca won the continental treble for the second time, it seemed as though theyd firmly taken the upper hand.

A lot has changed since then.

Since Zinedine Zidane took the helm in the capital in January 2016, the balance of power in Spain has shifted, precipitously; in his time leading the squad,Los Blancos have been unrivaled. In fact, so successful has Zizous team been, theyve tallied as many trophies (UEFA Champions League title twice, a La Liga title, a Spanish Super Cup title, the UEFA Super Cup twice and a FIFA Club World Cup) as losses: Seven of each in seventeen months.

Arguably, as successful as Zizou was as a player (three-time FIFA World Player of the Year; Ballon dOr winner; Player of the Year in Ligue 1, Serie A, and La Liga; World Cup champion and Golden Ball winner), his stature as a manager has already eclipsed such accolades. In less than two years, hes accomplished things to which no other manager has ever laid claim.

Going into this years Champions League final, the last team to successfully defend a European Cup title was Milan, in 1990. No team had ever done it in the Champions League eraand yet Madrid made it look easy, thoroughly outclassing a sturdy Juventus team in the final and then in the Super Cup beat a stacked Manchester United squad that had been on a roll.

And the truth is, theres a sense in Madrid that this team is still just getting started, despite three league titles in the past four years, and despite all the wins theyre rapidly piling up.

The time is deep, full of young stars still developing their talents. The strength and depth of the team is, quite simply, astounding. Not only is Cristiano Ronaldo arguably now the worlds best goal scorer (without Neymar or Suarez, can Messi still claim? Id argue not), but hes surrounded by talent as promising as accumulated anywhere else in the world.

The future is in the capital, and named thus:Theo Hernndez (age 19), Marco Asensio (age 21), Mateo Kovacic (age 23), Raphal Varane (age 24), and the triumvirate of Dani Carvajal, Isco and Casemiro, all age 25. Can any other squad boast such a collection of young talent?

Where once Camp Nou could claim Europes best collection of young talent, no longer is that the case. Instead, Spains most talented young talents are headed to theBernabu. Theo and Dani Ceballos but prove the point.

The midfield, once Barcas strength under the mindful control of Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez, is now a weakness compared to Reals riches, and it showed in the Super Cup drubbing. Additionally, Barca no longer seems capable of developing their own talent, and as they continue to sign transfers from elsewhere, what talent they have developed leaves for opportunities to actually play.

As a result, Barcelona appears on the verge of crisis, a team without inspiration or identity. Neymars loss was of the sort theyre hardly accustomed to, Suarez is out for at least a month, and Messi has yet to sign his extension. After getting thoroughly thrashed in the Spanish Super Cup (5-1, aggregate) even Gerard Pique expressed a bit of hopelessness at Camp Nou. I feel inferior to Madrid, he said.

Barca still have tremendous talent, and Ernesto Valverde is a skilled manager, particularly adept at keeping his calm. Even so, he has already readily admitted to the challenges ahead:We have to find the mechanisms but the circumstances have changed. Things happened in preseason.

Camp Nou is in disarray. Vice President Jordi Mestre says Messis contract extension is agreed, but nothing has yet been signed (and Bartomeu is meanwhile claiming otherwise), and we all remember Pique (and others) claiming Neymar was staying.

Pep Segura will claim major signings (Dembele and Coutinho) are close, but we know that game, and so disgruntled are fans at this point that Mestres been reduced to asking fans not to boo the Paulinho signing. At the same presser, Mestre was forced to defend Bartomeu, as many fans are calling for the presidents resignation.Fans are free to express what feelings they want, Mestre said at Paulinhos presentation. We would prefer respect, not insults, but I have no knowledge that Bartomeu will resign [because of the campaign].

Remembering how Mestre was similarly 200% certain Neymar would stay, it certainly wouldnt surprise us to see things get worse for the Catalans before they get better.

Ascension Partners with Tech Accelerator for Greater Healthcare Innovation – Healthcare Informatics

Posted: at 6:28 pm

Ascension, said to be the world's largest Catholic health system, has begun a collaboration with Plug and Play Tech Center, a global innovation, investor and technology accelerator that supports innovative startups across various sectors, including healthcare.

The St. Louis, Mo.-headquartered health system has been looking for innovative solutions and ideas to help the national health system deliver compassionate, personalized care, and this collaboration offers a new way to connect with the best new ideas as they emerge, its officials said in a press release.

Specifically, Plug and Play Tech Centers Health and Wellness Technology Accelerator aims to connect forward-thinking organizations, corporations and investors with startups in the health and wellness industry around such broad topics as wellness, longevity and digital health. Each year, the accelerator provides two 12-week intensive programs for some 40 health-related companies, culled from thousands of applicants. These young companies then are connected with sponsoring organizations like Ascension for coaching, mentoring and testing ideas.

This collaboration gives Ascension new opportunities to support our efforts to lead the transformation of healthcare. Plug and Play Tech Center offers us a defined, targeted method of spotting innovation in healthcare and wellness early on to solve problems and meet evolving consumer needs where, when and how they prefer, said Jim Beckmann, chief operating officer of Ascension Holdings, part of Ascensions Solutions division, said in a statement. We know the future of healthcare lies in offering greater value and in empowering consumers, and teaming with Plug and Play gives us another tool in the toolbox to achieve that goal.

Chris Young, Ascension vice president of innovation, further added that the health system looked at various accelerators before making a decision. These startups may be two or three people creating a new technology or method in their garage, or they may be further along as a budding business, he said.
