What if the Milwaukee Bucks had been allowed to sign Jeff Teague in 2013? Would they have Khris Middleton today? – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Posted: July 18, 2021 at 5:19 pm

It seems entirely possible that Khris Middleton's ascension with the Milwaukee Bucks wouldn't have happened without Milwaukee missing out on the player itreallywanted Jeff Teague.

Now Middleton's teammate on the Bucks and a player who has seen minutes in the NBA Finals, Teague was a target in 2013 for Bucks general manager John Hammond. The Bucks signed the restricted free agent Teague to a four-year, $32 million offer sheet, signaling they were prepared to move on from their own restricted free agent, Brandon Jennings.

But the Hawks, in a bit of a surprise move, matched the offer, and the guard returned to Atlanta. Milwaukee was forced to look at other optionsand, two weeks later, they swung a trade with Detroit for another point guard, Brandon Knight. It was a trade that included a second-year shooting guard named Khris Middleton.

Teague, who had just turned 25 years old, wanted to reunite with his former Hawks coach, Larry Drew, who'd been hired for his first (and, as it turnedout, only) season in Milwaukee. The Hawks had moved on to a new coach ... a guy you may have heard of named Mike Budenholzer.

Teague's comments indicated that he hoped (and perhaps expected) Atlanta to decline the offer match, which would return him to his previous team as per the tenets of restricted free agency.

"I'm definitely excited at the opportunity to come back to work with Larry Drew," Teague said at the time. "The Bucks have a good team, a young nucleus and guys that are ready to take the next step."

Said Teague's Indianapolis-based agent, J.R. Hensley,"I think after one call he knew this is where he wanted to be. He's familiar with Larry already and that's the icing on the cake. They can continue to grow together.

"It's a new challenge. It's just refreshing to be part of an organization that sees him as a building block for the future."

Hensley said Teague was frustrated by the Hawks' lack of sincere interest and phoned team president and general manager Danny Ferry to inform him he did not want to return to Atlanta.

"I'm nervous," Teague said of the 72-hour window in which Atlanta had to makeits decision. "I really want to be here. I thank Milwaukee for giving me this opportunity and taking a chance on me."

Atlanta's backcourt options were limited, and Ferry pulled the trigger to bring Teague back. It proved to be a shrewd move when Teague made the all-star team in 2014-15. He averaged 16 points and 6.5 assists over his next three seasons with the Hawks.

More: Get to know Milwaukee Bucks backup guard Jeff Teague, who played for the Atlanta Hawks

After bouncing around to Indiana, Minnesota, Atlanta again, Boston and briefly with Orlando (under Hammond, who released Teague after acquiring him), the point guard finally signed with the Bucks this year to play for his old coach in Atlanta just not Drew.

Oh, and he scored 11 points in a Game 6 win in Atlanta that gave the Bucks a 4-2 series win over his old team. More on "Bucks in 6" in a moment.

With the bad news coming on July 14 that the Hawks had retained Teague, Milwaukee was back to square one with an unhappy Jennings, who had averaged 17.5 points and 6.5 assists per game the previous season.

Monta Ellis had already signed with Dallas, and backup guards J.J. Redick and Mike Dunleavy had also moved on. Milwaukee was facing a rebuild, and Hammond had previously indicated he would likely match any offer for the 23-year-old Jennings and bring him back. But would he be happy?

On July 30, Milwaukee announced it had a deal in principle with the Detroit Pistons, a sign-and-trade in which Jennings would head to Detroit for point guard Brandon Knight, center Viacheslav Kravstov and Middleton. Milwaukee signed Jennings to a three-year, $24 million deal.

It's a deal that has worked out dramatically, but not in a way the Bucks expected.

Milwaukee was now headed into 2013 with just five holdovers: Larry Sanders, John Henson, Ersan Ilysova, Epke Udoh and Ish Smith. The team added new veterans like O.J. Mayo, Zaza Pachulia, Carlos Delfino and LukeRidnour.

Ridnour, Knight, second-round pick Nate Wolters and Smith were now the point-guard options.Knight had been the eighth overall draft pick in 2011 and had two more seasons on his rookie-scale deal. He'd averaged 13.3 points and 4.0 assists in 75 starts the year before, with a shooting mark of 40.7%.

Knight would go on to lead the Bucks in scoring the next two seasons. But he's not the reason the trade will be remembered.

Middleton, a second-round pick out of Texas A&M, averaged 6.1 points in 27 appearances with the Pistons as a rookie, but that was misleading. He'd torn his meniscus in his final year of college, an ailment that dropped him from a potential lottery pick to 39th overall in the 2012 second round. He did however, flash some potential with Detroit late in the season.

Middleton notably became the first NBA all-star to have played any time in the NBA G-League (D-League at the time), but that's also a little misleading; he played in only three games for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in 2012 as a rookie.

Middleton emerged quickly as a top option for the Bucks, making 64 of 82 starts that 2013-14 season and appearing in every game. His ascension meant fewer opportunities for Racine native and veteran Caron Butler.

"Now I'm concentrating on my whole body and not just focusing on one part," Middleton said. "I'm not thinking about it anymore. I'm over the knee phase where I just go out there and play, not worry about it.

"It was tough not playing (as a rookie). It was a reality check that I still have to put the work in and keep improving. I think it definitely helped me out to finally get that (rotation) spot at the end of the year."

Drew even began drawing up late-game shots for Middleton. He had his foot on the 3-point line for an overtime would-be tying shot that could have forced another extra period butinstead left the Bucks with a 111-110 loss to Charlotte, but the potential was there. It seems likely the Pistons would have realized what they had soon enough.

Middleton averaged 12.1 points per game in 2013-14, third on the team behind Knight and Ramon Sessions.

Though the story is still being written, it only gotbetter from there. Jennings eventually came back to Milwaukee, too, in 2018 and re-affirmedhis famous brash "Bucks in 6" prediction that has become a rallying cry for Milwaukee Bucks fans.

If Milwaukee indeed wins this NBA Finals in six (or seven, for that matter), Middleton will be a chief reason why.

Ascension Parish Schools wins national award for teacher recruiting campaign – Donaldsonville Chief

Posted: at 3:38 am

Staff Report| Donaldsonville Chief

The National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) selected Ascension Parish Public Schools to receive a Golden Achievement Award for its successful 2021 teacher recruitment campaign targeting Nicholls State University education majors.

Ascension Parish is one of 57 school districts across the country and the only one from Louisiana to win this honor in 2021.

"We are so grateful that this campaign was successful! Leaders in our school district identified both a need and an opportunity to meet that need, then worked together to strategically design and execute an effective plan that produced results," Superintendent David Alexander said. "The greatest reward of this campaign is the potential value it has to ultimately impact our students by attracting quality teachers from a great pre-service program at Nichols State University. The recognition from the National School Public Relations Association regarding this campaign is well deserved and adds icing to the cake. Our Public Information Office is second to none. They are great teammates within our organization, and the Ascension school system is a huge benefactor of their many campaigns and messaging efforts."

The Public Information Office worked with the Human Resources Department and instructional leaders to research, develop, and implement a targeted campaign to recruit certified teachers to work in Ascension Parish, especially at schools located in the western portion of the district.

The campaign, "$46k 40 Minutes Away; We Invest in Your Success," targeted education majors at Nicholls State University to make them aware Ascension Parish is within commuting distance. Campaign elements, which featured current teachers with Nicholls degrees who teach in Donaldsonville, included a dedicated page on our website, two billboards in Thibodaux, a direct mail postcard, a mailed letter from Superintendent Alexander with informational materials including a lanyard with an ID recruitment badge, social media advertisements, a recruitment video, and a special open house event.

The campaign was a tremendous success based on the following evidence: social media advertisements reached 23,600 people with 729 link clicks; 892 people visited the dedicated campaign webpage; 35 people traveled to participate in the in-person open house event; and from the Thibodaux area applicants increased by 218% (34 to 108), applications increased by 395% (61 to 302), and Donaldsonville school applications increased by 517% (6 to 37).

"Ascension Parish schools have long provided excellent opportunities for our candidates, and we are always happy to support initiatives that open doors for our graduates," said Dr. Scot Rademaker, dean of the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences. "We are excited to see the success of this campaign and look forward to many more Colonels heading Up the Bayou."

Ascension Parish's Public Information Officer Jackie Tisdell and Digital Media Coordinator Danielle Evans were invited to present the campaign during NSPRA's National Seminar in July, which will be held in New Orleans.

"This campaign would not have been successful without the collaboration of many district leaders and the support of Nicholls State University's administration and staff who saw this as more than a marketing campaign. It was an opportunity to develop a reciprocal pipeline to produce more education graduates," said Tisdell. "We plan to continue to nurture our relationship with Nicholls while looking for opportunities to expand our recruiting efforts by partnering with additional colleges and universities."

This is the fifth national award earned by Ascension's Public Information Office in the last six years including NSPRA's highest honor, the Gold Medallion Award in 2017.

In Louisiana, many still lack broadband access – The Town Talk

Posted: at 3:38 am

Ledyard King and Mike Stucka| USA TODAY NETWORK

As federal officials debate pouring billions of dollars into broadband access, data suggests many of Louisiana's schoolchildren and adults who preferred to work from home spent the pandemic with sub-par access to high-speed internet, particularly in the state's least-wealthy parishes.

Advocates say that "digital divide" across the United States is due largely to two factors: a lack of internet infrastructure in the country's rural reaches and the relatively high cost of broadband that has made the service unaffordable for many in urban centers.

In about half of Louisiana's parishes 33 of 64 measured by a Federal Communications Commission study, broadband access is available to at least 72% of residents. Yet in about half of the state measured by Microsoft 33 of 64 parishes no more than 17% of households actually have high-speed access, a USA TODAY analysis shows.

President Joe Biden and a bipartisan group of Senate moderates have reached a deal on a far-reaching infrastructure plan that would direct $65 billion to increase broadband connectivity from coast-to-coast. Despite the agreement, it's unclear whether it would address the solutions some lawmakers want to see such as continued broadband subsidies for low-income families, greater competition among wireless providers and continued buildout of high-speed networks in poorer, rural areas.

The Biden administration estimates 30 million Americans live in areas that lack broadband infrastructure to provide minimally acceptable speeds.

>> READ MORE: United States lags in broadband access, but will billions of dollars fix it?

In Louisiana, 14% of residents don't have adequate broadband infrastructure and 60% live in areas that have only one internet provider, according to the White House.

Locally, on the FCC and Microsoft measures:

The proportions of Louisiana households that have high speed access varies widely: In Catahoula Parish, it's just 2%; in Jackson Parish, it's 2%; and in Red River Parish, it's 3%. Leading the state are St. Tammany Parish with 60%, Lafayette Parish with 52% and Ascension Parish with 52%.

A USA TODAY analysis of data nationwide found a wide gap between rich and poor parishes, as measured by median household income. The chasm varies depending on state and county.

Among Louisiana's wealthiest parishes: 52% of Ascension Parish has access, 60% of St. Tammany Parish has access and 39% of St. Charles Parish has access. Among the least-wealthiest parishes, access rates are 10% in East Carroll Parish, 3% in Tensas Parish and 6% in Claiborne Parish.

>> Interactive Map: See how broadband access compares across the U.S.

Among the state's most populated parishes: Some 42% of East Baton Rouge Parish households have broadband access, as well as 38% of Jefferson Parish households and 34% of Orleans Parish households, the Microsoft data shows.

The complete USA TODAY story on national broadband is available on usatoday.com.

Erin Mansfield and Matt Wynn contributed to this report. The USA TODAY Network is publishing localized versions of this story on its news sites across the country, generated with data from Microsoft, the Federal Communications Commission and the White House.

LSU’s Cam Wire and his path from ‘baby giraffe’ to potential starting left tackle – The Athletic

Posted: at 3:38 am

BATON ROUGE, La. A pastor came to Kecia Wires place of work when her son was maybe 8 or 9 with a question about the young boy. Hed heard about Cameron Wires size. Then he saw it himself.

Is he interested in playing football? the pastor asked. But Wires first love was basketball. Playing football had never truly occurred to him. Still, Kecia was going to hear the pastor out, so a few days later he sent former NFL tight end Shawn Nelson an East Ascension High (La.) alumnus and youth coach Jeff Daniels to the Wire home to pitch them on football. They showed Kecia a video of the local team, the Prairieville Broncos, and explained what Wires future could be if he committed himself to this game.

Football history is littered with tales of large young athletes with all the upside in the world and the mission to get the most out of those large frames.

Saginaws Ascension offering free sports physicals and concussion testing for 2 days – MLive.com

Posted: June 28, 2021 at 9:40 pm

SAGINAW, MI - Middle and high school athletes will get a chance to get their sports physicals taken care of for free in Saginaw.

Ascension Medical Group Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, in conjunction with Field Neurosciences Institute, will offer free sports physicals and concussion baseline assessments for middle and high school students on Monday, July 26 and Tuesday, July 27 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 4677 Towne Centre Road, Medical Arts Building 3, on the second floor. The physicals will be performed by the medical team of sports medicine physicians, orthopedic sports surgeons, physical therapists, athletic trainers and Central Michigan University family medicine residents, according to a press release from Ascension.

Sports physicals are expected to take 15 minutes while physicals done with a concussions baseline test will take approximately 30 minutes, said the press release.

A concussion baseline assessment is performed to measure normal functioning in multiple areas of the brain that are commonly affected following a concussion, explained the press release, and assessments are done using the TRAZER where simulations mimic active gameplay and provide detailed data about an athletes performance capabilities. According to Ascension, baseline assessments allow for comparison of post-injury state to baseline parameters for accurate diagnosis and proper return to play protocol.

Each student will need to bring a completed Michigan High School Athletic Association medical history/consent form and baseline consent form signed appropriately by a parent or guardian. Parental attendance is required for students under 18. Forms are available online at http://www.fni.org.

There are a limited number of appointments available, according to Ascension. Those interested are asked to call 989-497-3118 to schedule a time.

Residents angered over East Ascension Drainage attempt to replace president – Weekly Citizen

Posted: at 9:40 pm

Some Ascension Parish residents took to social media over the weekend to air their concerns over some members of the East Ascension Drainage Commission seeking to remove and replace the parish president as leader.

The special meeting of the commission June 28 was called to void the contract between the district and Ascension Parish President Clint Cointment. It called for the establishment of a Chief Executive Officer of the district, and approval of a contract with William Roux LLC as interim CEO.

The agenda also called for an intergovernmental agreement with the parish to continue administrative functions as part of the four percent annual fee with additional conditions as to the separation of personnel and assets.

WilliamRoux LLC was registered June 24, according tothe Louisiana Secretary of State's business records.William "Bill" Roux is a retired parish drainage director.

In the days leading up to the meeting, commissioners Teri Casso and Aaron Lawler appeared in local television reports stating the parish needs a drainage professional at the helm.

Chase Melancon, who serves as Vice Chair of the EADC, said in a social media post June 24 that he received a call notifying him of the meeting at 1 p.m. to remove the president as drainage director.

Melancon said it was the first time he had been made aware that any such actions taking place.

"I can only assume I was intentionally left out of any conversations being had about the idea. So that's what I know, and not a thing more," Melancon stated.

Cointment released a statement via social media touting the more than 100 million dollars worth of projects started in just 18 months.

"We know there is still work to be done, though we feel that over $100 million dollars of projects in 18 months is a good start!" Cointment stated.

Over the weekend, Lawler thanked everyone who respectfully expressed their opinions to him regarding EADC leadership.

He suggested creating a spot on the commission for the parish president and allowing the commissioners to "appoint someone to sit in their stead if they wish."

Days earlier, commissionerJoel Robert said he was "befuddled" by the "blatant disregard for The People" in an attack on Cointment and his administration's progress.

Gonzales resident Jeff Pettit, in commenting to the Weekly Citizen, agreed more drainage work has been accomplished in 18 months, despite the pandemic, than in a decade and a half.

Pettit said he suspects the commission's move is a step to revert back to the former policy jury system, and eventually, to eliminate the parish president position and hire a parish manager.

"Put it to a vote of the people. Put it on a ballot. If ten east bank council members automatically become drainage commissioners, then the parish president can automatically become drainage director," Pettit said.

Nicole Halford Fall also commented, saying parish residents are tired of not being heard by the people elected to be their voice.

She recalled the last meeting of the full council when the public hearing was held on the proposed 12-month moratorium on new developments. Ultimately, the council voted for a nine-month version.

"A handful of builders and developers spoke out against the presidents plan, yet when the vote was done, the majority of the council voted against what the people clearly supported," Fall said.

A Facebook group called Ascension Citizens for Change has been gaining traction, she added. As of late June 27, the group had more than 500 members.

"There is a petition that was created on Saturday that is gaining momentum. We will be at the meetings and out talking to our neighbors to take this parish back," she said.

Back in 2017, a group called A Better Ascension sought to change the parish home rule charter and create a parish executive position, following the leadership structure large companies have.

Kenny Matassa, who was parish president at the time, stated the group was backed by special interestsand wanted to take away residents' right to vote for a president, as they have for other leadership positions like sheriff and mayor.
