Posted: November 21, 2021 at 9:37 pm

TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) El Tour De Tucson is welcoming the first adaptive cycling team created by Southern Arizona Adaptive Sports.

The Ascension Cycling team is made up of thirty people from 12 years old to 74 years old.

Apart from the team is Army veteran Peter Kerzner.

If you go out and you do something, you know about or your, your couch in your house and get out and see the world is it's beautiful out here," he said.

The veteran said he's excited about the race.

I've never done it before, so it's gonna be all new.

While hes excited, his journey to the start line was far from easy.

I was unfortunately hooked on opiates because of eleven operations oh my leg, it was very painful, he explained.

"[I] lost my mom that same year, 2020, and it's just a really bad year I was, you know, thinking, I didn't have much life left.

Thats when Kerzner said he had a turning point.

I [have to] either get better or I'm going to keep going down. I don't want to do that anymore. So, it's time for one last run," he said.

His coach, Mia Hansen, said that's what it's all about.

Providing opportunities like this to people living with disabilities. Well, it's important for everybody to exercise, no matter your ability but for people with a disability, especially becomes important to start," said Hansen, executive director of Southern Arizona Adaptive Sports.

She said the team was all made possible by Ascension Wheelchair Lifts.

Paul Davis is a leader at the Tucson company and said its more than just making lifts for them.

What we're really trying to do is help people have accessibility and the opportunity to live their life in the way that they want to do and so to see people like Peter, and other athletes like him, having the opportunity to pursue their goals and their dreams," he said.

Peter said the team has given him a new focus in life.

It gives me the freedom that I don't otherwise have. And just exercise has gotten me, you know, in a month and a half I know I've made, light years of progress," he said.

Southern Arizona Adaptive Sports also offers basketball, tennis, and golf programs.

Bahs of Topeka to celebrate Nov. 27 the 100th anniversary of the Ascension of Abdul-Bah – The Topeka Capital-Journal

Posted: at 9:37 pm

Kate Hamilton| Special to The Capital-Journal

The Bahs of Topeka marks the 100th anniversary of the Ascension ofAbdul-Bah, the son of Bahullh, Founder of the Bah Faith.

The anniversary of the passing of Abdul-Baha will be commemorated by Topeka Bahais and their friends Nov. 27. He passed away that night in 1921and will be remembered for an extraordinary life of service to humanity.

Before Bahullh, the Founder of the Bah Faith, died in 1892, He designated His son, Abdul-Bah, to become the interpreter of His teachings and leader of the Faith.

Abdul-Bahs life of service and dedication to His Fathers teachings of loving kindness and unity, is an inspiration to the millions of people worldwide who are honoring Him now. He served as the perfect example of how a Bahai should live. The only station for which He wished to be known was reflected in the title He took: Abdul-Baha Servant of Glory.

A celebration of the life and legacy of Abdul-Baha will beat the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library on Saturday, Nov. 27in Marvin Auditorium. An informal gathering at 3:30 will be followed by an hour-long film.

Bahaullah (1817-1892), The Glory of God, is considered by millions around the world as the Divine Educator for this age. His coming was foretold by all of the world's religions.

In His writings, Bah'u'llh outlines a framework for the development of a unified society which takes into account both the spiritual and material dimensions of human life. His teachings, centered around the recognition of the oneness of humanity, offer a compelling vision of a future world united in justice, peace, and prosperity.

What did Bahullh teach?

One God.

Called by different names throughout the ages, the eternal God, the Creator of the universe, is limitless, all-knowing, all-powerfuland all-loving. God is one. The reality of God is beyond human understanding, though we may find expressions of God's attributes in every created thing. The peoples of the world, of whatever race or religion, derive their inspiration from one heavenly Source, and are the subjects of one God. Bah'u'llh

One Human Family.

Beyond all differences of culture, class or ethnicity, regardless of differences in customs, opinions or temperaments, every individual is a member of one gloriously diverse human family. Each unique soul has a role to play in carrying forward an ever-advancing material and spiritual civilization. Ye are the fruits of one tree, and the leaves of one branch. Deal ye one with another with the utmost love and harmony, with friendliness and fellowship… Bah'u'llh

One Unfolding Religion.

Humanitys spiritual, intellectual and moral capacities have been cultivated by the successive Founders of the worlds religions the Manifestations of God among them Abraham, Krishna, Zoroaster, Moses, Buddha, Jesus Christ, Muhammad, and most recently, the Bb and Bah'u'llh. Each religion originates from God and is suited to the age and place in which it is revealed. In essence, the religion of God is one and is progressively unfolding. This is the changeless Faith of God, eternal in the past, eternal in the future. Bah'u'llh

How Zachary and its SEC-bound QB found a way vs. East Ascension – The Advocate

Posted: at 9:37 pm

Top-seeded Zachary overcame a sloppy start and held on to beat No. 17 East Ascension 24-21 in a second-round Class 5A playoff game Friday night at rowdy Spartan Stadium.

Zachary (12-0) advances to the quarterfinals, where it will host No. 9 West Monroe, which crushed No. 8 Chalmette 49-7 on Friday.

Zachary quarterback Eli Holstein, a Texas A&M, commit lost fumbles on the first three possessions, and East Ascension (6-4) scored touchdowns after two of them to take a 14-0 lead seven minutes into the game.

Troy Dunn threw scoring passes to Allen Starks and Joseph Hobdy to give the Spartans momentum.

The Broncos tied the game with two scores in the second quarter.

Holstein hit Kameran Senegal on an out route on the sideline, and Senegal sprinted 60 yards to get the Broncos rolling.

Holstein scored on a 1-yard keeper later in the quarter to tie the game 14-14 at halftime.

Zachary scored on its first possession of the third quarter to take the lead for good.

Connor Wisham rushed for a 9-yard score to put the Broncos up 21-14 with 4:17 remaining in the third quarter.

The defenses traded stops until 4:38 remaining in the game, when Kellen Conachen connected on a 21-yard field goal that put Zachary up 24-14.

The Spartans drove 70 yards in eight plays, including a conversion on fourth-and-11, and pulled within three points on a Zhavier Jupiter 5-yard run with 2:12 remaining.

After the kickoff, Zachary needed one first down to put the game away. Facing a third-and-5, Holstein completed an 8-yard out pass to Charles Robertson to seal the victory.

Zachary wide receivers Kameran Senegal and Charles Robertson: The duo combined for 207 yards receiving. Senegal caught four passes for 113 yards and a score, and Robertson hauled in seven catches for 94 yards.

Zachary coach David Brewerton: I dont think we played particularly well, but that has a lot to do with how East Ascension played tonight. Hat's off to them. When you are in a playoff run, you have to win games like this. You gotta be able to figure out a way to get it done, and we did it.

East Ascension coach Darnell Lee: Our defense played lights-out. We jumped on them (Zachary) early, and neither team quit. We had other opportunities in the half, but we didnt do a good job. We fought hard. We didn't lose this game ... they (Zachary) won it.

LISTEN: The X Collective share new anthemic single, ‘Ascension’ – hotpress.com

Posted: at 9:37 pm

Earlier this year, the X Collective announced their debut album, which is now set to be released in 2022.

The X Collective have shared 'Ascension,' the second single from their upcoming debut album.

The music initiative which was founded in May 2020 by Emily Shaw and Ele Breslin, or Zapho has over 100 artists and creatives. Three members of the collective have collaborated for 'Ascension': Jess Kav, Senita and Toshn. The soulful R&B track reflects the excellent musicianship of not only the three members, but also of the collective as a whole.

"The X Collective approached me at a time when I really needed a creative community for support," explained Jess Kav. "I feel bolder and more confident knowing I have a support system of musicians and friends I can call on for help and encouragement. It doesn't hurt that we put on an incredible show too!"

"It's great to be back in such a safe and nurturing environment where I can perform my art, be challenged creatively and go outside of my comfort zone and make friends for life in the process," commented Toshn.

In 2020, the X Collective shared their first single, 'Collide (feat. Jenny Browne)' by Zapho and Tol Makay. Earlier this year, the collective announced their debut album, which is now set to come out in 2022, and released 'WB,' performed by Chlo Agnew, Zapho, Senita, Toshn and Gemma Bradley.

"We are beyond thrilled to see the growth of the community considering its inception was just under 18 months ago," said Zapho. "It seems mad writing out our goals or plans for the collective during a pandemic, but against the odds we actually managed to achieve them all, we have a building and growing community, we hosted a songwriting camp, recorded our album and have a full showcase of original music ready for festival season!"

Emily Shaw said: "Lots of hard work, but it's worth it, forging close friendships and further connections is what glues this whole project together. We are all genuinely rooting for one another."

The collective also plan to perform at a number of headline events and festivals in Ireland ahead of the release of their debut album. Each performance will include a varied group of approximately 18 members from the collective. Learn more about their upcoming shows here.

Rajan Zed to read Sanskrit prayers at Abdu’l-Baha’ Ascension Centenary event in Nevada – NewsPatrolling

Posted: at 9:37 pm

As a remarkable interfaith gesture, Hindu statesman Rajan Zed will deliver prayer from ancient Sanskrit scriptures at the event to commemorate The Centenary of the Ascension of Abdul-Baha, head of the Bahai Faith from 1892 to 1921, in Reno (Nevada) on November 28.

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, plans to recite from Rig-Veda, worlds oldest extant scripture; besides lines from Upanishads and Bhagavad-Gita (Song of the Lord), both ancient Hindu scriptures. He plans to start and end the prayer with Om, the mystical syllable containing the universe, which in Hinduism is used to introduce and conclude religious work.

After Sanskrit delivery, Rajan Zed will then read the English interpretation of the prayers. Sanskrit is considered a sacred language in Hinduism and root language of Indo-European languages.

Zed, a global Hindu and interfaith leader, has been bestowed with World Interfaith Leader Award. Zed is Senior Fellow and Religious Advisor to Foundation for Religious Diplomacy, on the Advisory Board of The Interfaith Peace Project, etc. He has been panelist for On Faith, a prestigious interactive conversation on religion produced by The Washington Post; and produces a weekly multi-faith panel Faith Forum in a Gannett publication for over ten years.

Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about 1.2 billion adherents and moksh (liberation) is its ultimate goal. There are about three million Hindus in USA.

According to bahai.org: The Bah Faith is established in more than 100,000 localities in virtually every country and territory around the world.

After 5-year-old killed in crash in 2018, intoxicated driver gets 10 years in prison – The Advocate

Posted: at 9:37 pm

A Prairieville woman who was driving while intoxicated received a 10-year prison sentence over a 2018 crash that killed the 5-year-old daughter of a St. John the Baptist sheriff's deputy while injuring her sister and others.

Angela Gaudet, 35, pleaded guilty earlier this week to one count of vehicular homicide in the crash on La. 621 north of Gonzales. Ascension Parish prosecutors also agreed to drop obstruction of justice, first-degree vehicular negligent injuring and other charges against her, court minutes say.

Gaudet had been headed east on La. 621 on April 6, 2018,and tried to take a left from the two-lane highway onto Mire Road, Louisiana State Police said at the time.

She turned head-on into an oncoming vehicle in which 5-year-old Addisyn Teekell, her sister and others were riding.

Teekell's father, Benjamin, a St. John sheriff's deputy who was driving at the time of collision, shared the video of the crash on Facebook on the day Gaudet was sentenced along with a picture of his dead child.

"I share it in hopes that someone will understand the true cost of drunk driving," Ben Teekell wrote. "We never had a chance. Ill never get my daughter back, her sister no longer has her best friend, lives are forever devastated. Im grateful for the 5 years God gifted her to us. Dont drink & drive."

See Facebook post, video

Investigators determined Gaudet was intoxicated at the time of the crash. Testing found marijuana and a drug for which she had prescription in her system, her attorney said.

Investigators also gathered testimony that Gaudet had been drinking alcohol at a fair shortly before the crash.

Twice daily we'll send you the day's biggest headlines. Sign up today.

But, Angela Gaudet's blood tests were delayed because her husband, Joey Gaudet, initially lied to state troopers, telling them that he was driving and that Angela was a passenger. Also, immediately after the crash, Angela Gaudet was suffering from a medical issue, her defense attorney said.

The family of a 5-year-old girl killed in a head-on crash in Ascension Parish is seeing an outpouring of support from local law enforcement agencies.

The attorney, Jeff Heggelund, said blood tests were never able to determine the degree of Angela Gaudet's intoxication. For alcohol, drivers are deemed presumptively too intoxicated to drive if their blood-alcohol concentration is 0.08 percent or higher.

Heggelund noted that had Gaudet gone to trial, she would have faced a maximum of 30 years in state prison with a conviction for vehicular homicide alone. He said the victims' family consented to the plea agreement.

In December 2019, Joey Gaudet, 39, also of Prairieville, pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and injuring public records. He received sentences of five years in state prison for each count but they will run together, court records say.

The father of a 5-year-old girl killed in a crash Friday evening in Ascension Parish said that he forgives the driver who struck their vehicle

Judge Alvin Turner Jr. of the 23rd Judicial District Court handed down the sentence for Angela Gaudet on Tuesday in Gonzales after Benjamin Teekell and other victims testified and Gaudet had accepted her plea.

Turner made three years of her 10-year sentence without the benefit of probation, parole or suspension. He also ordered that she go through substance abuse treatment while in state prison, court minutes say.

A spokesman for the district attorney's office didn't return an email for comment Thursday.

Ascension Parish business owner featured in USA Today opinion section – Weekly Citizen

Posted: at 1:50 pm

Staff Report| Gonzales Weekly Citizen

Brandon Trosclair, an Ascension Parish business owner who operates 15 grocery stores in Louisiana and Mississippi, has made national headlines after mounting a legal challenge to the Biden administration's vaccine mandate for larger businesses.

The USA Today, which shares the parent company Gannett with this publication, published a Nov. 10 opinion article contributed by Trosclair.

A previous Republican candidate for the Louisiana House of Representatives, Trosclair owns and operates the two Ralph's Market stores along Hwy. 44 just north and south of Gonzales, as well as the two Butcher Boy stores in Plaquemine and Donaldsonville.

A second-generation grocer, Trosclair acquired several stores in the New Orleans area over the summer.

President Joe Biden announced that the federal government will mandate COVID-19 vaccines for companies with 100 or more employees, a move thatprompted a challenge from Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry.

A federal appeals court temporarily halted the Biden administration's COVID-19 vaccine requirement for businesses with 100 or more employees on Nov. 6.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted an emergency stay of the requirement by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to bevaccinated by Jan. 4 or face mask requirements and weekly testing.

In the USA Today opinion piece, Trosclair stated he is "grateful to be living the American dream" as a business owner.

He went on to praise the hundreds of employees who showed up to their jobs to serve customers "every day in the face of a scary, unknown virus."

"I am humbled to employ hundreds of these heroes. It is no small thingfor me to be able tohelp their families live out their own versions of the American dream. But now I am faced with an incomprehensible choiceimposed upon me by the federal government: Force these workers, whose dedication and skills have fueled my businesssuccess, to take a COVID-19 vaccine, submit to weekly testing at either my or their expense or show them the door," Trosclair stated.

Later in the opinion article, he pointed out that the American dream is not just about a good job to provide families with a good life, but also about individual freedoms.

"As a business leader in my community and the head of our company, I must fight against this administrations misguided attempts to take those dreams away," he concluded.
