Duke basketball overreaction post of the week: AJ Griffin is best of all time – Ball Durham

Duke basketball forward AJ Griffin (Rob Kinnan-USA TODAY Sports)
If Duke basketball is going to reach its full potential this season, AJ Griffins ascension into stardom will be the reason why.
In this new weekly column, we take extremely small and isolated samples of Duke basketballs highs and lows and exaggerate the hell out of them. What they become are season-altering occurrences with consequences that could shape the history of the Blue Devils for all time. It should be fun
Duke basketball has had no shortage of great players. The select few from days gone by and earlier eras get to have their names and jerseys immortalized in the rafters, looming large in the lofty environs of Cameron Indoor Stadium for all to see.
For the younger iterations of Duke Blue Devils, who have come during the one-and-done era or seek the lucrative embrace of the NBA ASAP instead of sticking around for four years, their seasonal contributions and draft rankings mark the places they occupy in Duke basketball lore.
Recently under Mike Krzyzewski, there has been no shortage of lottery picks, max-contract players, and soon-to-be or already there All-Star and All-NBA standouts who once graced the court in Durham. Kyrie Irving, Brandon Ingram, Jayson Tatum, Zion Williamson, and RJ Barrett are all known by singular monikers in many pro-hoops circles and in reverent tones among the Duke basketball ones.
One player from this squad who is not named Paolo Banchero but is still poised to join these ranks, and even ascend all the way to the top, is AJ Griffin. Although the sample size is becoming less and less small with each passing game, the eye-popping potential that drips from every jump shot or explodes from every kiss-the-sky rebound or dunk continues to be just as special as it was the first time we saw it.

Ascension review surreally fascinating snapshots of the Chinese dream – The Guardian
Posted: January 19, 2022 at 11:05 am
In a business etiquette workshop designed to prepare prospective executives for potential encounters with their western counterparts, an instructor with a polished Stepford veneer briefs her class on hugging protocol and the correct number of teeth to show in a smile (the answer is eight). In a workshop in Zhongshan, a team of women lovingly craft bespoke silicone sex dolls.
Meanwhile, in a food processing plant, workers in fat-splattered aprons sift through piles of entrails and duck carcass off-cuts. Trainee butlers, destined to work for Chinas new ultra-wealthy, are briefed on cutlery use and the importance of remaining impassive in the face of unreasonable behaviour. And in a deserted mall in a ghost city, built by developers but subsequently abandoned, stands the worlds saddest ostrich, alone in a bleak petting zoo, an attraction for the shoppers who never came.
Jessica Kingdons fascinating observational documentary, which looks at aspiration, manufacture, consumption and waste in China, is full of such intriguing snapshots. Accompanied by a lithe, organic score by Dan Deacon, which weaves the rhythms of industry and technology into the music, the film is a mosaic portrait of the realities and repercussions of the Chinese dream.

Team of Dream field receives $10,00 Grant from Greater Baton Rouge Fair Foundation – The Advocate
Posted: at 11:05 am
The city of Gonzales recently received a $10,000 check from the Baton Rouge State Fair Foundations Worthy Cause Grant, on behalf of Leadership Ascensions Team of Dreams.
Greg Edwards, chairman of the Baton Rouge State Fair Foundation, said the Board believes the extraordinary work done by Leadership Ascension to build the field and all that it represents is exactly the kind of initiative that we want to support and foster, and when we learned that the project needed $10,000 to finish the current phase of the ball park, we jumped in without hesitation and are humbled to be a part of it.
City officials; members of the Team of Dreams and League Volunteers; and representatives from the Greater Baton Rouge Fair and Baton Rouge State Fair Foundation board were in attendance for the presentation of the grant. Mayor Barney Arceneaux thanked the fair and foundation for selecting to support this incredible opportunity for the children of not just Gonzales, Ascension and surrounding areas.
The Field of Dreams is on Irma Boulevard in Gonzales. This award will help with the construction of restroom facilities and allow the Team of Dreams Ascension League to begin play this spring, a new release said.
Registration for Team of Dreams Ascension is open. The all-abilities baseball league will serve the youth and young adults of Ascension parish and surrounding areas. The league is for anyone who uses a wheelchair, with physical disabilities or with intellectual disabilities, and is meant for young and adult athletes.
City of Gonzales Recreation Director Lance Kohan encourages not only players but members of the community that want to get involved to volunteer.
Anyone interested in participating, volunteering or who would like more information can contact Kohan at (225) 354-6243 or email Lance@gonzalesla.com or register atwww.GonzalesLA.com.

Leveraging The 12th Draft Slot Could Accelerate The Vikings Ascension – purplePTSD.com
Posted: at 11:05 am
Apr 26, 2018; Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys on the clock in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft at AT&T Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports
Obviously, most of the attention lately has focused on what everyones favorite purple team will do at GM and HC. Gone are Rick Spielman and Mike Zimmer; who replaces them is anyones guess (Im guessing Spytek and Leftwich). These two decisions will be the most important ones of the offeason, for it is these two who will be giving the franchise a new direction and identity. One thing that has gotten a little bit overlooked recently, though, is how the draft will play into that. The Vikings pick 12th, a spot that may end functioning as a critical turning point in the draft.
Last seasons 12th pick turned out reasonably well. Micah Parsons has been an absolute terror in his rookie season. The so-called middle linebacker has consistently been lined up along the edge, giving Dallas another defensive weapon for offenses to worry about. Its a 99.99% certainty he wins Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Not every rookie can match Parsons. There has been legitimate chatter about him being in contention for Defensive Player of the Year, so its safe to say the young fella has been sensational on the field.
Whats easy to forget about that pick, though, is that it didnt originally belong to Dallas. In fact, the 12th spot changed hands multiple times. The 49ers traded up to third overall with Miami. To do so, they had to surrender the 12th pick, a 2022 first, 2022 third, and 2023 first. Theres next to no chance the Vikings pursue this strategy with the 12th pick.
Shortly thereafter, the Dolphins traded away their recently-acquired 12th pick to Philadelphia. Miami got the 6th pick and 156th pick in exchange for the 12th pick, a fourth in 2021, and 2022 first. Again, a massive price, one that Minnesota would be hesitant to pay.
Whats interesting, though, is that there was another trade not too long afterwards. Philadelphia traded up with Dallas to get to the 10 spot. The cost was a third rounder in that draft. So, not insignificant, but also not future-first(s) massive. If the Vikings are in love with someone who is tumbling down the board but unlikely to get to 12, a move can be made for a price that isnt totally backbreaking.
Of course, the Vikings arent predestined to trade up. They could very reasonably trade down.
One thing that makes the possibility even more plausible is the mere fact that its close to the Top 10. If a team is convinced a bonafide top tier player has slid down the board, they could be inclined to jump up to ensure they snag their man. Moreover, its also notable that there doesnt appear to be a consensus, surefire QB toward the top. In the past, weve seen several QBs go in the opening 10 picks. We may not see any go that high this year.
That being said, its entirely possible that there could be a run on QBs through the teens. Its not like the position is somehow less important. If a team picking further down the board thinks they could turn someone like Matt Corral into a legit QB1, perhaps they make the trade. Last year, the Bears jumped up to 11th for Justin Fields. It cost them the 20th pick, a fifth, a 2022 first, and a 2022 fourth. In other words, it can be lucrative for a team to be in a bit of a transition point in the draft.
Of course, the Vikings may stay where they are. A player with the ability of Micah Parsons can instantly rejuvenate a defense. Perhaps the Vikings will find someone who can instantly contribute in a massive way. Until the pick is made, expect plenty of speculation.

Defense is top priority for Lady Gators | Ascension | theadvocate.com – The Advocate
Posted: at 11:05 am
Defense wins championships is a term used in most sports and nothing is more important to the St. Amant Lady Gators basketball team.
We hang our hat on defense, defense wins championships and that is what we teach, said coach Bianca Harvey.
The former Donaldsonville and collegiate standout has brought her toughness and hard play mentality to the Lady Gators program. Sitting at 10-8 (as of press time) and number 17 in the power rankings, the Lady Gators have started district 5-5A play and it will be tough.
Our district is tough; we have to put together a full game ensure wins. All of the teams in our district are tough and well coached," Harvey said.
The Lady Gators had an outstanding season last year, winning district and finished 21-10 overall with a close loss to 5A powerhouse, Walker, in the second round of the playoffs. Gone from last years team is Amana Gray, the team leader and point guard.
The Lady Gators return some fire power with four starters. We return Caterina Byars, Deniya Thornton, Amiyah Barrow and Bret Mayers, all solid players, Harvey said.
Twice daily we'll send you the day's biggest headlines. Sign up today.
Thornton leads with 14.4 points per game followed by Barrow (11.8 ppg), Byars (11.7 ppg) and Mayers at 4.8 points per game.
The Lady Gators have some depth including some top newcomers and potential starters. Halle Haydel is a junior and she is now the starting point guard. Senior Rylie Boudreaux returns after an injury and is the sixth man, she provides a spark with her play and rebounding as well according to Harvey.
Senior Kalli Hano is a post player that works and provides quality minutes coming off the bench. Junior Taylor Shields returns for her junior year and has been a great defender and plays key minutes. The strength of the Lady Gators is defense, to no surprise, and Harvey likes what she sees so far.
We can stretch the floor with our bigger players, they can guard all positions. We basically play with five guards, who can push the ball up court in transition as well providing pressure from our defense. We must continue to spread the floor, this will allow us to open the middle for penetration on offense, Harvey said.
Scoring points is fun, but the Lady Gators will continue to defend every possession because that will be their focus each night. Anyone can have an off night on offense on any given day, but you should never have an off night on defense, Harvey said.

Genshin Impact: Shivada Jade Sliver locations and farming – RPG Site
Posted: at 11:04 am
If a cryo character is on your radar in Genshin Impact, then youll want to make sure youve got a few Shivada Jade Slivers on hand. These little pieces of character ascension materials are the very first versions of cryo items youll get.
Keeping a Shivada Jade Sliver or two on hand isnt a tall order. As the most basic forms of Shivada Jade pieces, youll find some sources fairly generous. Youll also notice theyre handy for crafting and turning into other pieces, but well cover all that here, too. Below, check out ways to craft with, buy, or farm forShivada Jade Slivers.
As a character ascension material, youll want to scoop up Shivada Jade Slivers wherever possible. Check out a couple of these easy sources first before moving on to keep up with farming.
These shops only reset for you to exchange Mora, but new players can exchange local Sigils at shops in Liyue and Mondstadt. Slivers of all elements are available for ten Sigils each in limited supplies. In Mondstadt, speak to Marjorie to exchange your Anemo Sigils. In Liyue, speak to Xingxi to exchange Geo Sigils. These never restock, so Sigils are best spent on Mora after, but its a handy feature for new players.

If youre hard up for Shivada Jade Slivers (or other elements), you can do a little juggling. Find a crafting bench in any city to begin the process, just be careful about how you spend your materials. Cryo is a pretty sought-after character element, so its probably safe to assume some other materials are worth sacrificing for these ascensions. However, its often easy to farm low-level pieces like slivers, so you may want to go hit up generous enemy rewards instead.
Alchemy makes it possible to convert one sliver of any element into a Shivada Jade Sliver using Dust of Azoth. Every month, you can obtain 1,000 stacks of ten of these items from the Stardust Exchange shop for five Masterless Stardust.
Crafting aids with turning Shivada Jade Slivers into Shivada Jade Fragments. You can turn three slivers into one fragment.
If youre farming slivers for cryo characters like Ganyu, Congyun, Ayaka, Shenhe, and others - there are a few sources to pick them up from bosses. Thankfully, you can get Shivada Jade Slivers early on from these enemies as theyre a low-level item. Heres the location and timers of each, just keep in mind youll need Resin to farm all of these.
Cryo RegisvineThe closest teleport for the Cryo Regisvine is Temple of the Wolf. After making it to the domain, youll head south and drop into a deep canyon to fight the icy plant. This boss only rewards you with Shivada Jade, so it's a great source of the material.
Cryo HypostasisThis boss is waiting for players that have made it to Dragonspine. Take the waypoint at Daleth's Retreat, you'll find the big elemental boss waiting for your party in the arena surrounded by mountains. Like Reisvine, the Cryo boss here only drops Shivada Jade.

Primo GeovishapThis boss changes elements, so take a look at what colors its rocky armored body is to see what it's going to drop. You can find the creature in Liyue, easily reached from the Natianmen Highland teleport by gliding down to the ruins to the southwest.
Maguu KenkiYou'll find Maguu Kenki on Inazuma's Yashiori Island. There's a teleport on a cliffside just to the southeast, take it and glide down to face the boss. Maguu Kenki also may drop Anemo rewards, so don't get your hopes up on bigger stashes of Shivada Jade.
Perpetual Mechanical ArrayThis one is another Inazuma boss, located at Jinren Island and only accessible through a wormhole at first.Completing Sacred Sakura Cleansing Ritual for the Memento Lens will also unlock a waypoint nearby. This mechanical monster also drops other elemental pieces.
Bathysmal Vishap HerdThis duo of bosses launched with Genshin Impact's 2.4 update, making them a challenge in Enkanomiya. Take the teleport at Dainichi Mikoshi and you're almost there. You get cryo and electro rewards for defeating the pair.
Some of these bosses are easily accessible through the Trounce Domain menu under your Domains tab from the book menu, but below you'll also find where they are just in case you're on the search.

Wolf of the North, AndriusOne of your earliest challenges in Genshin Impact rewards Shivada Jade Sliver - it's also not available through your Trounce Domain menu. Take the nearby Wolvendom teleport and run west to southwest, you'll find the boss in the arena. The big pup drops Shivada Jade and other elements.
Golden House, ChildeYour encounter with Childe can yield Shivada Jade and other elements. It's available for a direct teleport using the Trounce menu, locatedjust south of Liyue Harbor.
Nantianmen, AzhdahaThis one is another Liyue boss, unlocked after wrapping up Zhongli's story. Azdaha drops all elements, so it's not the best source, but you may get some Shivada Jade Slivers here. This beast has another direct teleport through Trounce options, Beneath the Dragon-Queller.
