"Casual"set-piece defense limiting Chicago Fire’s ascension in the East – MLSsoccer.com

Posted: May 9, 2017 at 3:44 pm

CARSON, Calif. The Chicago Fire, undefeated at home in 2017, have struggled away from the friendly confines of Toyota Park this season, one of six MLS clubs without an away victory. And in what could be an ascendent season, the Fire's success let alone on the road depends on improving set-piece defense.

At StubHub Center on Saturday against the LA Galaxy, Chicago scored two early first-half goals, and looked to be in total control of the match. But LA came roaring back in the second half, their increased intensity putting a relaxed Chicago back on its heels. LA equalized off two corner kicks, securing a point in the 2-2 draw.

In the second half, I think we came a little too casual in one of our strengths, which is our defensive set pieces, said Fire head coach Velkjo Paunovic.

Out of the 14 goals Chicago has given up so far this season, four have been off set pieces all on the road.

The Fire admittedly eased off the pedal, leaving room for miscues and blown assignments.

Maybe we thought the game was done, said Bastian Schweinsteiger. We spoke about it on half-time. That was not the case. We didnt find the free man, we rushed, we lost the ball too easy, then you lose a little bit of the control of the game.

Chicago will get a reprieve from the road, with only two matches away from Toyota Park in the next month. But they face both the Seattle Sounders and Orlando City in the next few weeks, and each of those teams has scored a significant percentage of their goals off set pieces.

Midfielder Juninho knows that Chicago has to take the lessons from Saturday night. And it starts with the obvious:

Unfortunately, we let in two goals from set pieces. Now, we just have to work hard and take it game-by-game.

New technology in the war against mosquitoes: Ascension eyes spraying with drones; Lafayette uses drones to scout … – The Advocate

Posted: May 8, 2017 at 12:10 am

That buzzing you hear from the ditch may soon not only be the beating wings of flitting mosquitoes but the propellers of a large, flying mosquito killer.

In Ascension Parish, officials are close to buying a new aerial drone able to fly, hover and spray up to 20 pounds of chemicals at a time in hard-to-reach areas where mosquitoes breed.

And in Lafayette Parish, a private mosquito control company is using drones to scout for breeding sites.

David Matassa, Ascension's director of mosquito control and brother of Parish President Kenny Matassa, said the drone can spray with a precision that would allow parish workers to save on cost and limit environmental impact compared with more broadly applied aerial methods. The drone, for instance, could be used to spray a ditch along a heavily traveled road with no shoulder that's traditionally been unsafe and hard to spray.

"This is the state of the art. This is the turning corner of mosquito control as far as programs in the country going toward this type of technology," David Matassa said.

While a parish worker is still in training and working on licensing requirements with the Federal Aviation Administration, Matassa said, the drone, which will cost $5,000 to $8,000, could be flying parish skies in time for the peak mosquito season.

The remotely operated drone won't replace the trucks and planes that already spray periodically through the parish and which kill the adult mosquitoes.

The drone, which can spray 80 acres in a days work, will be used to kill larvae growing in standing water, taking out the next generation of mosquitoes before they take flight.

Thats actually one of the most important things you can do to control the population of mosquitoes, is larvicide, he said.

Technology pioneered by the U.S. military to observe the battlefield and, later, to kill militants, remotely controlled aerial drones are being envisioned in a growing number of civilian applications, from Amazons promises to revolutionize delivery with its Octocopter to experiments to use drones to monitor Gulf Coast hurricanes.

In the Gulf South, mosquito control remains a public health concern as the flying blood-suckers pose a disease risk to the population, including West Nile and Zika virus.

Tiny aircraft equipped with cameras may soon be snooping around abandoned lots and overgrown

The drone that Ascension Parish is looking at buying a circular, tail-less craft with eight mini-props and a tank on the bottom had its origins in remote-control helicopters developed to spray terraced rice paddies in the hillsides of Japan, China and southeast Asia where it is difficult to bring in land-based spray equipment.

Logan Noess, one of the owners of Maverick Drone Systems of Savage in Minnesota, said those early craft, developed about 15 years ago, cost around $100,000. The latest version costs 10 percent of those early craft. The cheaper variety has drawn the interest of local governments, including Ascension Parish, he said.

Noess, whose company is a U.S. dealer for the Chinese-built craft, a DJI Agras MG-1, said his company recently conducted a series of demonstrations in eight to 10 Louisiana parishes following a national conference of mosquito control officials.

We were just spraying water out in fields, and from everything we have seen, it should work great, he said.

Matassa, who went to that conference and witnessed a demonstration, speculated that Ascension may be the first in the state to use a drone for aerial spraying but likely wont be the only one for long. He said he has spoken with other program directors, and many are eyeing drones for similar uses.

I guarantee you within a few years, most all (mosquito control) programs will have them, Matassa said.

Matassa said the drone can fly a few hundred feet high and 8,000 feet over land in a few minutes. While the drone could be outfitted with cameras, parish officials plan to focus on the spray technology, he said.

The contractor who handles mosquito control for Lafayettes City-Parish government already uses smaller, cheaper drones but for a different application.

Glenn Stokes, owner of Mosquito Control Contractors Inc., said he uses a few $1,500 drones outfitted with surveillance cameras to look for hard-to-access breeding sites, including the parishs more than 1,000 residential and commercial detention and retention ponds, but he does not yet use drones for spraying.

Because of the expense, that would require a change in the City-Parish contract, he said.

The drones have a great potential, and I think you know they will be more and more in use, and at some point in time, thats going to be in the future, they could actually replace inspectors, Stokes said.

The use of camera-outfitted drones by businesses, law enforcement and even Stokes operation has generated privacy concerns, however. Stokes said his company only looks into the yards of homes that are abandoned or for which the company has received permission, though he said a major public health scare could result in broad surveys of breeding locations.

Its a delicate line, Stokes said of the use drones and privacy rights.

State track meet: Ascension Catholic girls win Class 1A with flurry in final two events – The Advocate

Posted: at 3:49 am

On paper, the Ascension Catholic girls didnt appear to have enough points to pull off a Class 1A team championship Friday night at the LHSAA/Allstate Sugar Bowl track meet.

Heat sheets are not always accurate predictors of who wins a meet, and the Bulldogs scored 22 points in the final two events to nip Haynesville at Bernie Moore track stadium.

Were so happy to win this, ACHS coach Janet Daigle said. We thought we were at about a 10-point deficit coming in. The girls were so great. They worked so hard.

The final tally had Ascension Catholic winning with 63 points followed by Haynesville (62) and Lafayette Christian (53).

In the boys competition, Haynesville had a cushion as it won with 96 points. Cedar Creek (77), Southern Lab (52) and St. Frederick (50) were the closest challengers.

Heading into the 3,200-meter run, Ascension Catholic trailed Haynesville 52-41. The Bulldogs finished 1-2 in the 3,200 with Sophie Daigle winning (12 minutes, 2.90 seconds) and Breanna Bernard placing second.

Haynesville won the final event, the 4x400 relay, with a time of 4:14.11.

That meant ACHS had to place no worse than fourth to win the meet, a feat it accomplished.

We had the sixth best (qualifying) time, but we finished fourth. I told the girls they couldnt finish worse than fourth, Janet Daigle said.

Sophie Daigle ran the final leg of the 4x400, and had wins in the 1,600 (5:33.17) and 800 (2:25.03) to go with her first in the 3,200. She was named the meets outstanding girls performer.

A pair of athletes completed their high school careers by winning an event for the fourth consecutive year; White Castles Ariel Bell and Southern Labs Xavier Bell.

Ariel Bell won the girls 100 with a time of 11.94. She was so dominant that she crossed the finish line nearly a full second faster than second-place finisher Tamia Washington of Delhi, who was 10 meters behind.

Afterward, she admitted to being mildly disappointed she didnt break the Class 1A record of 11.91, a time she tied last year.

I didnt run my best race, said Ariel Bell, who also won the 200 with a time of 25.13. I was trying to break the record.

Xavier Bell, who played wide receiver for the Southern Lab football team, won the 400 at 48.44. He pulled off the win win just minutes after running a leg on the Kittens winning 4x100 relay (42.41).

I was happy with the race. I was trying for 47, but it was alright, Xavier Bell said. It was pretty tough (running back to back), but my coach (Henry Combs) worked me really hard and prepared me.

The 4x100 was part of a relay sweep for Southern Lab. The Kittens won the 4x200 (1:28.21) and the 4x400 (3:30.02), where Xavier Bell overtook three runners on the final leg.

Ascension DJ’s Rise At this Summer’s Wildest Weekend Festival – Huffington post (press release) (blog)

Posted: at 3:49 am

Thousands of men from around the globe will flock to the sun drenched Jersey shores in August for the summers wildest gay weekend of music, dance and friendship. This years Ascension Party takes place in the beautiful beach town of Asbury Park. The three-day festival begins Friday, August 4th with the VIP cocktail party, followed by ten additional parties including an underwear party, a beach party, a pool party and more!

We are thrilled to bring Ascension back to the states, says party founder Eric von Kuersteiner. Ascension Party launched in 2006 on Fire Island Pines, where it continued annually until 2014. For the last two summers Ascension has taken place in Mykonos. We brought on a new partner for the weekend who brought a lot of fresh ideas including the idea to take the party to the beautiful beaches on the Jersey Shore.

Tickets for Ascension Party 2017 are available online at http://www.ascensionparty.com. To find out whats in store, I spoke to some of the world famous DJs who will be headlining the weekends main events.

DJ PAULO spins the Saturday Night Celebration.

How would you describe your style and sound? DJ Paulo: Tribal/Progressive layered with big vocals.

What are examples of beats you will likely be throwing down at Ascension? DJ Paulo: I probably will be bringing out some of my Paulo-Lite tracks for this event since it's by the beach. I just finished a remix of Katy Perry's "Chained to the Rhythm" that I'll be playing.

Finish this sentence: At Ascension 2017, be prepared to DJ Paulo: Shake and sweat.

DANI TORO will spin Saturdays Ascension Beach Party main event.

How would you describe your style and sound? Dani Toro: My style depends on the crowd. I never get to the DJ booth with a play list of tracks as I dont know what the mood of the crowd is going to be. I start with a couple of tracks and I wait for the reaction and that decides my DJ set. Sometimes crowds want more vocals, sometimes more circuit.

What are examples of beats you will likely be throwing down at Ascension? Dani Toro: Right now, my favorite producers are Tony Moran, Paulo, Joe Gauthreaux, Tommy Love, Mauro Mozart, Tom Stephan, Thomas Solvert and, of course, myself. I'm getting amazing feedback with the remixes of my track Lick Me Up" and also Katy Perry's "Chained To The Rhythm. But well have to see in August which songs will be favorable amongst the crowd.

Finish this sentence: At Ascension 2017, be prepared to Dani Toro: Dance like there is no tomorrow! The Ascension team did a great job securing the line up for this new adventure in Asbury Park. You got the best of the USA DJ's and some International DJ's like me who are gonna make a perfect match for the entire weekend.

EDDIE MARTINEZ will spin Friday nights Underwear Party.

How would you describe your style and sound? Eddie Martinez: My style is sexy and fun with lots of energy. My sets always include my original work, private mixes and edits, along with my own personal flare.

What are examples of beats you will likely be throwing down at Ascension? Eddie Martinez: I like to mix current popular tracks and give them my own stamp, such as my remixes of Britney Spears's "Just Luv Me" or Rihanna's "Sex With Me".

Finish this sentence: At Ascension 2017, be prepared to Eddie Martinez: Sweat because it's going to be hot like a MF.

DJ LINA will spin Friday nights VIP Cocktail Party.

How would you describe your style and sound? DJ Lina: Soulful.

What are examples of beats you will likely be throwing down at Ascension? DJ Lina: The music I play is more underground deep house so anywhere from Monique Bingham to ReelSoul, to Studio Apt and Blaze.

Finish this sentence: At Ascension 2017, be prepared to DJ Lina: Be turned out. Ovah like a fat rat! The wonderful part about Ascension is each DJ brings their own unique style so that everyone gets what they need.

JOE GAUTHREAUX will spin Sundays Ascension Closing Party.

How would you describe your style and sound? Joe Gauthreaux: My sound has always been big room. I like playing for a lot of people so that's how I've tailored my music over the years.

What are examples of beats you will likely be throwing down at Ascension? Joe Gauthreaux: The most important thing for me is to connect with the crowd. A lot of times that means playing something that I know everyone will love, like "Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran. Or maybe it's one of my own tracks, like "Show Me (What You Got)" that I did with DJ Grind. Its special because the crowd knows its my track, so they know they're not listening to some jukebox, but someone who is playing music that came from them.

Finish this sentence: At Ascension 2017, be prepared to Joe Gauthreaux: Let go because its going to be a ride like no other.

DAN SLATER will spin Sundays Ascension Pool Party.

How would you describe your style and sound? Dan Slater: My DJ style and sound is uplifting, upbeat and chunky. I love vocals, and the sounds of European and South American producers.

What are examples of beats you will likely be throwing down at Ascension? Dan Slater: Im doing the pool party so Ill play a mixture of commercial, classic and underground tracks like Brian Justin Crums Show Me Love feat. Toy Armada & DJ Grind, Katy Perrys Chained To The Rhythm and Ultra Nates Desire 2K17.

Finish this sentence: At Ascension 2017, be prepared to Dan Slater: Werk!

DJ HANSEL will spin Saturdays Ascension Beach Party main event.

How would you describe your style and sound? DJ Hansel: My sets have a very distinct sound, ranging from tech-house to tribal to my signature circuit. Im Latin and I like to see my crowd shake and move hard so Ill often add a bit of beats (drums) that remind me of my Latin roots.

What are examples of beats you will likely be throwing down at Ascension? DJ Hansel: There will be underground and tribal house beats, and maybe a dose of Britney mixed in.

Finish this sentence: At Ascension 2017, be prepared to DJ Hansel: Dance and jump because its going to be an insane festival.

STEVE SIDEWALK will spin Sundays Ascension Pool Party.

How would you describe your style and sound? Steve Sidewalk: Ive been a DJ for over 18 years now and I am pretty well known for my high energy vocal dance sets.

What are examples of beats you will likely be throwing down at Ascension? Steve Sidewalk: Expect to hear remixes and reworks of classics from Whitney, Madonna, Deborah Cox and artists like Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Beyonce. I love spinning feel good, summer anthems like a fierce house mix of "When Love Takes Over". I also love to embrace underground into my sets as well Offer Nissam and Peter Rauhofer. And since its a pool party, expect to hear some classics like Barry Harris "Dive in the Pool".

Finish this sentence - Be prepared to: Steve Sidewalk: Dance and have an amazing time. I can't wait to be part of your soundtrack for the amazing weekend that Ascension 2017 is going to be!

Ascension Party takes place Friday, August 4 through Sunday, August 6 at Asbury Park. The host hotel is The Asbury Hotel (210 5th Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ). Visit ascensionparty.com for ticket information.

GOATWHORE’s New Song "Vengeful Ascension" Is Just Sinister, New Album In June – Metal Injection.net

Posted: at 3:49 am

Three years after Goatwhore's fantasticConstricting Rage of the Merciless comes Vengeful Ascension, due out June 23. Vengeful Ascension seems like it's going to be a slower and darker effort from the New Orleans-based quartet, and you can get a taste of that churning blackened madness courtesy of thetitle track to the album below.

Vengeful Ascension was recorded reel-to-reel at Earth Analog in Tolono, Illinois withJarrett Pritchard (1349, Gruesome), wasmixed by Chris Common (Tribulation, Pelican), and was mastered by Maor Applebaum (Faith No More, Halford, Today Is The Day).

This is the first time in four album that Goatwhore has not recorded with Erik Rutan, and the band just wanted to change it up, says vocalist Ben Falgoust.

"Working with Rutan was awesome. We did some great records with him. But you come to a point where youre like, 'All right. Lets try something new.' It was part of trying to remove ourselves from a comfort zone and a risk thing we needed to take. Plus, we really wanted to hit the essence of where we are live and what better way to harness that than by having our live sound guy involved. Jarrett is knowledgeable with the studio stuff. He also knows how we sound coming out of a PA and we really wanted to get closer to that."

Pre-order Vengeful Ascension here.

Goatwhore Announce Seventh Album ‘Vengeful Ascension’ + Unveil Title Track – Loudwire

Posted: at 3:34 pm

Metal Blade

Album number seven is on its way from Goatwhore! Vengeful Ascension will see a June 23 release date and the discs title track can be streamed right now!

Goatwhore have been one of extreme metals most reliable modern bands for well over a decade. Each album released by the NOLA quartet has brought forceful and blasphemous cuts in the style of blackened death metal, and if Vengeful Ascension is any indication of whats to come, you can expect another ripper from Goatwhore.

Vengeful Ascension will be the first Goatwhore record released without Erik Rutan behind the soundboard since 2003s Funeral Dirge for the Rotting Sun. Working with Rutan was awesome, says Goatwhore frontmanBen Falgoust. We did some great records with him. But you come to a point where youre like, All right. Lets try something new. It was part of trying to remove ourselves from a comfort zone and a risk thing we needed to take. Plus, we really wanted to hit the essence of where we are live and what better way to harness that than by having our live sound guy involved. Jarrett [Pritchard] is knowledgeable with the studio stuff. He also knows how we sound coming out of a PA and we really wanted to get closer to that.

As for the 10 tracks to be found within Vengeful Ascension, Falgoust explains, Each song is a representation of Goatwhore from day one until now. It really shows our evolution as a band. I dont think that this band has reached its peak yet. I mean, I think were closer now than ever but were still growing; were still evolving.

Vengeful Ascension will explore the Luciferian concept of Satan as an emancipator and guiding light rather than the epitome of evil. Theres that whole idea of Lucifer being the anti-hero, elaborates Falgoust. Hes cast out from this place in Heaven to the depths of nothing. He keeps trying to ascend to the top again but no matter what, theres always this significant force trying to destroy him at any point and banish him back to Hell. If you look at it from an everyday aspect in life, its the idea of people, hitting the bottom of the barrel or you know, things just arent going right in life emotion plays a huge part in how people react. Whether its based on love or hatred or sadness or whatever, theres always an aspect of emotion that drives people to an extent. So the whole idea of a Vengeful Ascension is built on being at the bottom, working your way to the top, and realizing along the way that theres other facets to the journey aside from just pure retribution. Within negativity there can exist a positive angle as well.

Goatwhores seventh album is already available for pre-order at the Metal Blade shop with a bunch of bundle and multicolored vinyl options ready for your consumption. Check out the albums title track and track listing below. Goatwhore are currently on tour opening for Amon Amarth in North America, so be sure to catch those remaining dates!

Ascension Episcopal’s explosive offense ready for quarterfinals – The Daily Advertiser

Three of the four semifinal teams for the Division IV state playoff tournament in Sulphur have been set.

Thursday, No. 11 Ascension Episcopal is going to try and book that last spot.

The Blue Gators take on No. 3 Covenant Christian at home on Thursday with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. after upsetting No. 6 Hanson Memorial in the Regional round, with whomthey split the regular season district matchup.

Ascension Episcopal coach Lonny Landry said he wasn't worried about his team being too confident after the first-round upset after treating the season like professionals throughout the year.

"One thing about the team this year, they've been pretty even-keeled the entire year," Landry said. "It's what I've tried to preach, don't get too high or too low."

PREP BASEBALL:Patriots ride senior leadership to quarters

Landry said the Blue Gators pulled off the upset behind a good performance on the mound by Sean Michael Brady, who gave up five total runs but only three earned, and kept plugging away despite going down early on.

"We continued to play clean baseball after the second inning," Landry said. "We had quality at-bats throughout the game, but we had the right patience in the ninth. Seth Kerstetter tied it up and we got four more in that same inning."

The offense at Ascension Episcopal has been particularly impressive this season, led by future Ragin' Cajun Jeffery Elkins.

Elkins finished the season with a truly outrageous stat line after hitting .652 with 12 doubles, 10 home runs, 59 RBIs and 22 stolen bases.

READ MORE:Carencro hoping to keep magical run going

As a team, Ascension Episcopal scored 313 runs this season only behind the team it plays on Thursday in Covenant Christian who scored 331 runs as a team this season.

"I think this is the best offensive team we've had at Ascension one through nine in the batting order," Landry said. "One way or the other they are going to be productive whatever it might be, even getting hit by a pitcher. All the guys contribute.

"I've scouted (Covenant Christian) and they are not the three seed by accident. At this point int he bracket everybody is as good as everybody else."

Unlike in other brackets, the quarterfinals remain a one-game, do-or-die elimination situation for Division IV teams.

Landry said he hasn't ever done anything else in the playoffs so he didn't mind the one-game playoff format.

"It's tough. I've never had a three-game series. It's do-or-die at this point," Landry said. "I think with the single game elimination every pitch is just a little more important."

Baseball playoffs: Ascension Catholic cruises past Catholic-PC 10-1 to reach Division IV semifinals – The Advocate

Posted: at 3:33 pm

DONALDSONVILLE First, they rejoiced in unison with a celebratory leap in center field.

Then they joined their joyous home crowd at La La Regira Field.

After three straight state quarterfinal setbacks, No. 4 Ascension Catholic reveled in the moment following its 10-1 Division IV quarterfinal victory Tuesday over No. 5 Catholic-Pointe Coupee.

For three years in a row we were stuck in the quarterfinals, and we finally got over that hump, said Ascension Catholic shortstop Nick Bellina, who contributed a grand slam. It feels great to be where were at.

The Bulldogs (21-12) clinched a berth in the state tournament for the first time since 2009. They will meet No. 1 Central Catholic-Morgan City, a 7-1 winner over Ascension Christian, at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at McMurray Park in Sulphur.

This group of seniors have been working since our freshman year, Ascension Catholic pitcher Landon Clifton said. The last two years we lost here and it hurt. We put in the work this week and finally got through it.

Clifton (10-3) pitched into the seventh before leaving because of stiffness in his back. He yielded four hits, walked three and struck out eight in an 81-pitch outing before David Girior got the final two outs.

He threw well, Ascension Catholic coach Todd Landry said. We didnt want to risk anything in the end. There was no reason to push it with a nine-run lead.

Ascension Catholic was clinging to a 2-1 lead after Catholic-Pointe Coupee (19-13) scored its lone run in the fourth on Walker Castles RBI groundout.

The Bulldogs, who won their fifth straight game, left no doubts about their state tournament intentions by answering with six runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Catholic-PC had one of its four errors in the inning, leading to six unearned runs and nine overall.

Catholic-PC first-year coach Drew Leonard declined comment afterward.

Ascension Catholic made it 3-1 on Rodney Blanchards RBI groundout when the Bulldogs loaded the bases with two outs, and Bellina, an LSU-Eunice signee, launched his fourth homer of the season on a 2-1 offering from losing pitcher Samuel Grezzafi.

Grezzafi allowed four hits and five runs (none earned), walked two and struck out one.

I was thinking he was going to throw a curveball and I sat back and hit it over the fence, Bellina said. It felt good. It felt like a relief off our shoulders.

The Bulldogs tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth on Mason Zerangues RBI double and a fielding error.

Weve been working for it since my freshman year, and we finally got through it, Clifton said. It feels great.
