Rabbi Leonard Lewy is here to help staff chaplain at Ascension Columbia St. Marys Hospital in Ozaukee – The Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle
Posted: October 13, 2022 at 1:06 pm
Rabbi Leonard Lewy knew he wanted a career that would allow him to perpetuate Judaism and the Jewish community.
His faith and culture were important to him as a second-generation Holocaust survivor. Lewy considered a career as a social worker. He also thought about working as a history professor.
Lewy instead became a rabbi, but he chose a setting other than a congregation for his workplace.
His career has included stints working in hospice settings, hospitals and at the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. Last year, Lewy became a staff chaplain at Ascension Columbia St. Marys Hospital in Ozaukee.
I think it came in my genes and upbringing, Lewy said.
Both of his parents worked in health care or had aspirations to, he said. For himself, Lewy said he enjoys caring for people, and the job includes some aspects of social work, with a substantial amount of listening and helping required. His love of Judaism is part of the equation, and his familys experience during the Holocaust is also on his mind.
Im able to do something much different for the people that I serve, and giving people honorable experiences, honoring peoples being created in Gods image of whatever faith and caring for them and ensuring that theyre treated with dignity, Lewy said.
As a staff chaplain, Lewy said he visits with patients and their families of all faiths. In addition to working with them directly, he said he makes referrals to patients congregations. He also collaborates with hospital staff on goals they have for patients.
Lewy also advises employees to help them bring cultural sensitivity to their work with Jewish patients. For instance, he discourages Christological language in prayer and other references while working with patients of a Jewish or other faith background. He also provides education on kosher food and adherence to a kosher diet.
Lewy added that he has been working with the food service department on improving its kosher options for patients and being prepared with options such as grape juice and challah for Shabbat and the holidays.
Rev. Traci Houts, Ascension Wisconsins spiritual care manager, pointed to Lewys work on the kosher options as an example of his impact at the hospital. Lewy, she said, has a gift for hospitality. His work with the food service department shows how Lewy works to make Jewish patients comfortable, as he does with patients of any faith.
He has really taken it upon himself what I would call the ministry of hospitality of making sure that we are honoring anothers culture, Houts said.
As he provides spiritual support, Lewy said he approaches patient interactions with an aim of assessing needs, building rapport and bringing cultural literacy to patients time in the hospital.
Sometimes people say that Ive helped them or given them a gift, Lewy said. But its a gift to me that I keep getting, every time I help and even encounter people of any background. It also includes our staff and volunteers, who are such valuable contributors to our health care team.

Ascension arts and craft fair comes with fair-trade twist – Thousand Oaks Acorn
Posted: at 1:06 pm
Ascension Lutheran Churchs fair trade ministry will host its second Fair Trade Gift Fair on Sunday.
After the success of the first event in May, organizers decided to plan this weekends event in time to celebrate the ministrys 20th year of involvement with fair trade practices and to coincide with Fair Trade Month.
Fair trade is a way of doing business that puts our people and planet first, said Carol Bjelland, who leads Ascensions fair trade ministry.
The ministry partnered with Fair Trade Los Angeles to include eight vendors for Sundays event set to take place in the churchs front parking lot at 1600 E. Hillcrest Drive, Thousand Oaks.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. items from artisans around the world, including clothing, household goods, coffees, teas, chocolates and cheeses, will be sold.
Its the perfect occasion to get off to a great start for Christmas shopping, for beautiful and tasty items while making the world a better place through fair trade, Bjelland said.
Ascension Lutheran Church will have its own booth to sell fair-trade products such as olive oil from Palestine, pecans from Georgia and cheese from Wisconsin, she said.
The ministry offers classes focused on the 10 principles of fair trade to promote human, economic and environmental justice. Some of the principles are transparency, accountability, fair payment, no child labor and sustainable growing practices.
Sundays event will serve an outdoor class with all the vendors on hand to provide insight on fair-trade practices, Bjelland said.
Some of the products, such as Equal Exchange Chocolates, include a story of where the ingredients are sourced from on the wrappers interior.
Everyone is encouraged to ask questions. The vendors would be more than happy to share their fair-trade stories, she said.
Since the gift fair is on a Sunday, shoppers are invited to join in the churchs services at 9 a.m. for a traditional worship or
11 a.m. with the
Praise Alive band.
Youths from the church will serve fair-trade coffee and doughnuts from a local shop, Bjelland said. as Everyone is invited to celebrate fair trade and hear their stories, she said.

Free breast health discussion to be held Oct. 13 at Romeville cancer care center – The Herald-News
Posted: at 1:06 pm
All adults are invited to a free panel discussion about breast health and breast cancer prevention.
The discussion will be held 6 p.m., Oct. 13, at Ascension Illinois Cancer Care Center Romeoville, located at 500 S. Weber Road in Romeoville.
The event is being held in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, according to a news release from Ascension Illinois. Specialists from Ascension Illinois Cancer Care Center will discuss various topics related to breast health and breast cancer.
Questions will be encouraged and light refreshments will be provided.
Dr. Lauren Ghee, breast surgeon, said the panel will include an oncologist discussing the latest breast cancer treatments and a radiation oncologist discussing current radiation treatments for breast cancer.
Ghee encouraged men and woman of all ages to attend.
I think its important for woman and men to know that breast cancer doesnt only affect women and that it doesnt only affect women of a certain age and patients who have a history of breast cancer, Ghee said.
[Breast cancer not as common in men, but does occur]
Ghee said its also important for women between the ages of 20 and 30 get a risk assessment for breast cancer through a breast surgeon, family doctor or gynecologist.
Because, so far, American Cancer Society doesnt recommend screening mammograms until the age of 40 for women at average risk for breast cancer.
The American Cancer Society said women at average risk for breast cancer dont have a family history of breast cancer or a genetic mutation that increases the risk of breast cancer. Women at average risk have also never had chest radiation therapy before age 30 or actually had breast cancer.
Ghee said the risk assessment isnt a particular test but a look at family history and other risk factors which could potentially increase a patients risk of developing breast cancer at an early age.
I have patients in their 30s that have already done the screening process and they were found to be at high risk, Ghee said.
No risk assessment or screening mammogram recommendations for men so far, Ghee said.
Generally speaking, the first sign of possible breast cancer is a palpable mass. But its easier to detect breast cancer in men and address it.
Ghee said she often hears people say genetic testing isnt for them because they dont have daughters, only sons.
Its a common misconception that the genetic causes of breast cancer dont affect men, Ghee said. Thats not true.
Although the event is free, registration is required. To register, visit ascn.io/breasthealthpresentation.

Ascension Episcopal relishes new lease on life after elusive first win as district play begins – The Advocate
Posted: at 12:43 pm
After an 0-4 start, Ascension Episcopal got into the win column by routing West St. John 42-0 last week.
Blue Gators coach Stephen Hearen, whose team travels to 1-4 Catholic-New Iberia in a District 8-2A opener, likes the way his team has handled adversity.
"It was uncharted territory for the kids. Our senior class had never had to deal with anything like this," he said. "One of the things I was most pleased with was that I felt we played hard every week against competitive teams.
"We just ran out of gas against some physical teams. We knew that once we got into the district, it's anybody's to win."
The Blue Gators haven't had any problem scoring points. The offense, led by quarterback Cade Dardar and receiver Austin Mills, has produced 31 points per game.
Hearen is wary of Catholic-New Iberia, which thumped Eunice 44-18 last week for its first win
"I think it was a case of things starting to click for them last week," he said of the Panthers. "They have some young guys on the field and sometimes that takes a little time.
"Catholic High has some athletic running backs that they move around to different spots. They have a lot of offensive weapons and are comfortable trying to run downhill. Their quarterback (Luke Landry) is a competitor who plays with confidence."
When word got around that Jacob Carruth was interviewing for the position of head football coach at North Central in the summer of 2021, the young coach didn't exactly receive messages of encouragement.
"I was advised to turn and run, that nobody can win there," said Carruth, who previously served as an assistant coach at north Louisiana programs Homer and Glenbrook Academy.
"But that's the worst thing anybody could have told me. It sounded like an opportunity to me."
Although the Hurricanes didn't win a game last year, they showed improvement, and after two losses to begin this season, Carruth's squad has won three straight heading into this week's District 6-1A opener at 3-2 St. Edmund.
"The perception had been that we're the worst team in the world," said Carruth, whose team snapped a 40-game losing streak with a 54-6 Week 3 win over Thrive Academy.
"Now everybody around the school thinks we're the best team in the world. People expect us to win, which is what we want. Pressure is a privilege. We're not going to shy away from it."
The Hurricanes are averaging 32.4 points per game. Sophomore quarterback Craig Malveaux has passed for 796 yards with 13 touchdowns, and he also leads the team in rushing (49-404, 4 TDs).
Devion Lavergne, who is a 6-foot-4 senior receiver and one of the state's top basketball prospects, has 31 catches for 493 yards and eight TDs.
"Devion is a special talent for us, especially being that it's his first time playing football," Carruth said. "We have several like him, freak athletes on the basketball court who we've put in positions where they showcase their athletic abilities.
"We were quite good enough to get the job done with a win last year, but we focused on fundamentals and building excitement around the program. The way to do that is to score points."
Iota is another program that has won three straight games after an 0-2 start.
After a 27-8 loss to Iowa in Week 1, the defensive-minded Bulldogs have allowed 32 points over the next four weeks with a District 3-4A road game at Northwest up next.
Coach Ray Aucoin's defense, which returned 10 starters from last year, is headed up by all-state linebacker Dayton Boone.
"He is rolling right along and is averaging 11 tackles per game," Aucoin said of Boone, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior.
"Everybody says the strength of our defense is the linebacking corps, which likes to come downhill and hit people."
The Bulldogs (3-2, 1-0) will try to slow down Northwest running back Javian Reese, who is one of the area's leading rushers with 607 yards on 77 carries with seven touchdowns.
"This is our biggest game of the year," Aucoin said. "We say that every week. We want to stay the course and be playing for the district championship in Week 10 against Church Point. "We don't want to peak. We just want to keep getting better."

Genshin Impact: Xiphos’ Moonlight how to get it, stats, and ascension materials – Gamepur
Posted: at 12:43 pm
The Xiphos Moonlight is a 4-star Sword weapon added in Genshin Impact Version 3.1. This support weapon empowers characters who scale off of Elemental Mastery, giving your team a huge boost in Energy Recharge. This great weapon will be a great fit for any sword characters who love elemental reactions like Vaporize.
To obtain the Xiphos Moonlight, the weapon must be featured as an available 4-star weapon on the Weapon Event Wish banner. Unlike most 4-star weapons in the game, the Xiphos Moonlight is only available to pull through this method, meaning you cannot obtain this weapon in the Standard Event Wish or Character Event Wish banners. Currently, the Wandering Evenstar is not available yet.
Related: Should you pull for Cyno or Venti in Genshin Impact Version 3.1?
The Xiphos Moonlight is a good support weapon for characters who rely on Elemental Mastery in their kits. The Energy Recharge you gain from this weapon is significant and is spread across your entire team, making this a great option to bolster the support capabilities of characters like Kazuha or Kuki Shinobu.
This weapon will also likely perform well on Dendro characters such as the Dendro Traveler and upcoming Nahida. Note: if you have multiple weapons at the same time, the buffing effect of this weapon will stack. Its recommended not to refine this weapon and spread the buffing effects throughout your entire team.

From Single-A to PNC Park, Luis Ortiz’s rapid ascension to the Majors – Bucs Dugout
Posted: at 12:43 pm
Its not often you see a pitcher who played the entire 2021 season in Single-A reach the big leagues the following year, especially in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
Its even rarer when a starting pitcher, rather than a bullpen arm, ascends through the ranks to accomplish this feat. Age can play a factor as well as the round they were selected.
None of the above applies to Luis Ortiz.
A 23-year-old right-hander from San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, Ortiz has opened eyes in Pittsburgh following his first three Major League starts. In 15.1 innings, Ortiz owns a 1.17 ERA, a .093 batting average against, 0.78 WHIP, and has struck out 17 with 7 free passes.
He might never go back.
Ortiz signed with the Pirates on Oct. 2, 2018, and played in Rookie Ball the following year. The COVID-19 pandemic shut down the 2020 Minor League season, putting Ortiz and his fellow Minor Leaguers behind the eight ball.
Ortiz ended 2021 where he started it, making 19 starts in 22 appearances for the Single-A Bradenton Marauders. He pitched to the tune of a 3.09 ERA, .241 opposing batting average, 1.26 WHIP, and finished 5-3 in 87.1 total innings.
Ortiz relied on his plus fastball high-nineties fastball that can reach triple digits to strike hitters out, sitting down 113 batters compared to 28 walks.
The Pirates first showed their aggression with Ortiz by bypassing High-A Greensboro and assigning the 6-foot-2 hurler to Double-A Altoona.
General Manager Ben Cherington and his staffs risk seems to have paid off despite an up-and-down season for the Curve. He struck out a high number of hitters (126) but reached an ERA of 4.64 in 23 starts totaling 114.1 frames, finishing strong with five runs allowed in his final 21 innings.
With the Altoona season coming to a close, Ortiz and a plethora of other Curve players including top prospects Quinn Priester and Endy Rodriguez received a chance to showcase their skills at the Triple-A level.
Ortiz allowed eight runs (four earned) in 10 innings over two starts for the Indianapolis Indians, striking out 12 and limiting batters to a .108 average.
Even though the Indians were still playing, Ortiz was recalled to face the Cincinnatti Reds on Sept. 13. He allowed no runs and only one hit in 5.1 innings.
His opportunity extended to one of the best lineups in baseball on the road, historic Yankee Stadium with Aaron Judge chasing the American League home run record. Judge finished 0-for-2 with a walk and two groundouts as Ortiz exited following five innings of one-run ball (two runs, one earned).
Ortiz depends on his power fastball - graded by MLB Pipeline as a 60 on the 20-80 scale - to speed up hitters and display a slider and occasional changeup.
The Pirates need pitchers like Ortiz who show flashes of potential to come out of the woodwork and make a difference with the ballclub. Hes throwing his fastball 58 percent of the time with batters hitting below .100 (0.88) on the pitch and .105 on his slider. The rightys fastball velocity is in the 98th percentile in all of baseball, according to Baseball Savant, and his fastball spin is in the 84th percentile.
Ortizs emergence as an unlikely addition to the 2022 squad is indicative of the Bucs' willingness to be cautiously aggressive with their starting pitchers if it's even possible to find common ground and do both.
Its only three starts and two against struggling teams, but those same two games against division opponents who have caused fits for Pirates regardless of their talent level.
Pittsburgh may have discovered a hidden gem the organization needed to pair with Priester and Roansy Contreras as a middle-of-the-rotation starter with back-end of the bullpen potential.
Time and additional innings will be the ultimate indicator of Ortizs potential and blowing the ball by hitters at 100 MPH is a good place to start.

Posted: at 12:43 pm
The band continues to perform their recently released albums during their residency at the famed NYC venue.
By Andy Kahn Oct 2, 2022 1:00 pm PDT
Tedeschi Trucks Band continued their trend of performing complete albums during their show last night at the Beacon Theatre, with the recently released album I Am the Moon: II. Ascension played in its entirety. The band previously offered complete renderings of their I Am The Moon: III. The Fall album on opening night of their current Beacon residency and followed with I Am The Moon: IV. Farewell on night two.
I Am the Moon: II. Ascension was released in July following the June release of I Am The Moon: I. Crescent. Two additional volumes of the four-part album followed as I Am The Moon: III. The Fall arrived later in July and I Am The Moon: IV. Farewell landed in August.
Night three at the lauded New York City venue began with Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi steering their bandmates through the seven songs that comprise I Am the Moon: II. Ascension. Saturdays show started with the Ascension album opener Playing With My Emotions. The ensemble subsequently rolled out the rest of the songs in the order they appeared on the record, serving up Aint That Something, All the Love, So Long Savior, Rainy Day, La Di Da and Hold That Line.
After completing the album, Tedeschi Trucks Band tacked on two songs before taking a set break, selecting a cover of the Four Tops Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever and their Whiskey Legs
The second set started with Bob Dylans Down In The Flood. TTB original Hard Case came next, followed by a trio of covers, Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad? by Derek & The Dominos, Smoke Ring Halo by The Wood Brothers, and the B.B. King popularized How Blue Can You Get. Regular favorites Anyhow and Midnight Harlem surrounded a cover of The Letter and The Allman Brothers Bands instrumental Little Martha.
Key to the Highway (which appeared on Derek & Dominos Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs album) and Bound for Glory were the last songs of the set. Another Derek & The Dominos tune, Tell The Truth, held down the encore slot and brought the evenings concert to an end.
TTBs seven-show residency at the Beacon continues tomorrow, Monday, October 3. Listen to an audience recording of Saturdays Tedeschi Trucks Band show posted by Eric Lugassy and watch audience-shot video footage below:

With Ascension of King Charles III, Ethiopian Government Renews Calls for the Restitution of its Holy Tabot from Westminster Abbey – ARTnews
Posted: at 12:43 pm
The Ethiopian government is renewing calls for therestitutionof a holy object hidden inside an alter inLondons Westminster Abbey.
For the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, the tablet, known as a tabot, represents the Ark of the Covenant, and it is considered sacrilege for it to be seen by anyone other than clergy. The tabot in Westminster was looted in 1868 by British troops at the Battle ofMaqdala, along with hundreds of other cultural treasures looted.
The procedure fordeaccessioningartifacts from Westminsiter Abbey is a legal gray area. The Abbey is known as a Royal Peculiar, which puts its properties under the jurisdiction of the monarchy. TheArt Newspaperreports that any restitution may require the approval of the new British monarch, King Charles III, who ascended to the throne last month following the death of his mother, Elizabeth II.
Following the British raid, the Maqdalacollection was scattered among the collections of various Western museums, such as the British Museum. One tabot was donated to the Abbey byCaptainGeorge Arbuthnot of the Royal Artillery and later incorporated by architect George Gilbert Scott into the designs for an altarpiece in the Henry VII Lady Chapel, where it was visible to visitors.
The Ethiopian government has campaigned for years for the restitution of the looted tabots, to varying success. In 2002,the Church of St John the Evangelist in Edinburgh returned a tabot that had been discovered in a cupboard. Three years laterthe British Museum moved its collection of 11 tabots to an underground store that staff are prohibited from entering.
Westminster Abbey, however, has refused all appeals from Ethiopia. In 2007, thehead of the Ethiopian Orthodox church, Abune Paulos, traveled to London to directly lobby a representative of the Abbeyfor its return. The tabot, however, was not returned, though in 2010 a covering was placed in front of the tabot, and an inscription reading Fragment of an Abyssinian Altar brought from Magdala in 1868 wsa removed from view.
In 2018, a Westminister Abbey spokesman said, The dean and chapter are very conscious of the sensitivity of the Ethiopian tabot, so steps were taken a number of years ago to ensure that the tabot, which is in a very sacred place, was properly covered and could not be seen by anyone.
Speaking tothe Art Newspaperlast month, an Abbey spokesperson said that there are no current plans [for its return], but the future of the tabot is kept under review, and that the Abbey has no plans to change these arrangements.
