WMU professor awarded for book that peels back the curtain on Fetzer’s secret life | WMU News – WMU News

Dr. Brian C. Wilson

KALAMAZOO, Mich.Detroit Tigers owner. Media mogul. John Fetzer's legacy as a successful businessman is widely known. But another driving force played a huge part in Fetzer's life: metaphysical spirituality. From psychics and the paranormal to "energy medicine" and even UFOs, Fetzer studied it all.

"It was part of his life that he kept really private," says Dr. Brian C. Wilson, professor of comparative religion at Western Michigan University. "Southwest Michigan is a pretty conservative place. He was afraid if people found out about his spiritual interests, he'd lose his audience, he might lose advertisers, or it might even put his (broadcasting) licenses in jeopardy. So, he was very quiet about it."

The Historical Society of Michigan has awarded Wilson with its highest honorthe State History Awardfor his book, "John E. Fetzer and the Quest for the New Age," which follows the businessman's journey from Seventh-day Adventism to a quest for global spiritual transformation. It's Wilson's second such award, also winning in 2015 for his religious study of Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, the Battle Creek Sanitarium director who essentially invented breakfast cereal.

"As a professor of comparative religion with a focus on New Religious Movements, Im fascinated with how people construct their worldviewsespecially people who are not professional theologians or religious specialists. Kellogg and Fetzer fit the bill perfectly," says Wilson.

"Everyone knew about Kelloggs Corn Flakes and the Battle Creek Sanitarium, but few knew about the novel religious worldview that led to these things; and many knew about the Fetzer Broadcasting System and Fetzers ownership of the Detroit Tigers, but only his closest friends knew about the spiritual journey that ran in parallel to (and informed) his business pursuits. I think many readers of my books have found these added dimensions to these two well-known figures intriguing and exciting."

Wilson was able to get an intimate look at Fetzer's life through the Fetzer Memorial Trust, an arm of the Fetzer Institute, which originally commissioned him to write the introduction to an anthology. That led to a sabbatical and book project.

"In the basement of the Fetzer Institute are his archives, and he basically saved everything from his childhood on. So, it's incredibly richthere's just tons of stuff," Wilson says. "I got to mine that for a year and write a book, so it was just a fantastic experience."

During the course of that year, Wilson was able to read letters Fetzer wrote when he was a young boy, see pamphlets he'd collected speaking out against Seventh-day Adventism, and read through the research he'd cultivated.

"I could go through and look at the progression of how he started putting these things together. He accepted some things, rejected others and over the decades created his own spiritual world view," says Wilson. "One of the reasons he got into metaphysical spirituality is because he wanted a spiritual path that was kind of harmonious with his engineering, technological and scientific interests."

In the 1970s, his financial and spiritual interests intersected with a number of research projects he funded, ranging from parapsychology to spiritual healing and alternative medicine.

"He was very interested in biofeedbackthis idea that if you hook up autonomic functions in the body to a machine that can reproduce the pulses or rhythms in sound, then you can hear that and through meditation and concentration you could begin to control it," says Wilson. "He funded a kind of exploratory program here at Western that became part of the basis for the holistic health program."

Wilson says his deep dive into Fetzer's life gave him a fascinating look at how the businessman's spiritual curiosity and journey mirrored the development of metaphysical spirituality in the United States during the 20th century.

"Fetzer developed an idea he called 'freedom of the spirit,' by which he meant that every individual has the right and duty to explore the path suited for them, regardless of social and other pressures," he says. "This he did for his entire life, and even at a very advanced age, he continued exploring and experimenting with new ideas and practicesan unquenchable zest for life that I find inspirational."

Wilson's research record earned him the WMU Distinguished Faculty Scholar Awardthe University's highest academic honor for facultyin 2019, and he doesn't have to travel far to find inspiration for future work.

"It turns out the Midwest was the epicenter for this kind of change away from an exclusively Christian focus to much more freedom of spiritual focus," says Wilson, who is considering a project centering on famous women's suffragist and Unitarian minister Caroline Bartlett Crane of Kalamazoo.

"She was a big part of the progressive movement. (Crane) was known as 'America's Housekeeper' and would go to large urban areas to do surveys and reports on living conditions, slum conditions, hygiene conditions and sanitation conditions, all in order to improve life in urban areas. She was quite well known in the day."

He's also working on a project with a wider scope, tracing a famed cross-country journey by Ralph Waldo Emerson late in his life that culminated in a meeting with John Muir in California that became the touchstone for American environmentalism.

Philly to host public meetings to help veterans in need – Metro US

Posted: at 1:42 am

There are currently more than 943,000 veterans living in Pennsylvania that is the fourth largest statewide veteran population in the country.

And of those, many struggle with mental health.

According to the RAND Center for Military Health Policy Research, about one-third of returning servicemembers report symptoms of mental health or a cognitive condition. And only about half of the returning veteran population who need mental health treatment receive help, according to a study conducted by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

The statistics are staggering but two organizations in Philadelphia are hoping to change that.

There is an extreme need in Philadelphia and in Pennsylvania as a whole for veterans, said Ron Millward, executive director and founder of the local nonprofit group Balanced Veterans. Pennsylvania is the fourth largest veteran population in the nation and theres not a whole lot of real community and education happening.

Beyond/Hello, a statewide community dispensary chain has partnered with Balanced Veterans to help local veterans through education on alternative medicines. Alternative medicines can encompass a plethora of remedies anything from medical marijuana to yoga and many things in between. Regardless of the practice, however, the goals are the same improving health for veterans.

On Tuesday, Feb. 18, the newly formed duo hosted their first public meeting in hopes of spreading their mission throughout Philadelphia. The inaugural meeting was held at Beyond/Hellos Northern Liberties location and additional meetings have been planned on a monthly basis.

To see the community come together was amazing. We have started bringing people together in a safe space to learn and promote public health and better quality of life, said Beyond/Hellos Colleen McQuade. Even beyond what happened in the meeting, I think we started something thats going to continue to grow and develop relations of other community partnerships. I think it's going to continue to reach out and impact more people.

The purpose of these events is simpleeducation and awareness. Each public meeting will focus on individual topics regarding veteran-specific issues. Upcoming meetings will focus on sleep, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and pain.

McQuade explained how veterans in need can seek relief from alternative medicine, specifically medical marijuana. Beyond/Hello which started in Bristol, Bucks County, and has since added locations in Philadelphia, Johnstown, Scranton and West Chester aims to educate others on the benefits of medical cannabis.

Cannabis is part of the toolbelt. There is a lot of usefulness. The patients we work with I've seen life change. People get better. When you can sleep more than an hour, it helps, said McQuade, who manages Beyond/Hellos location in Center City. We have pharmacists at dispensaries that are good at counseling. When a patient comes in, they will have good recommendations on doses, work with medical history and provide a high level of care to them. We have a very knowledgeable staff.

Medical marijuana was legalized in Pennsylvania in 2016 and two years later, it became available to patients through dispensaries across the state. After a patient is approved by a physician that he/she has a medical condition that requires medical marijuana, you can register in Pennsylvanias Medical Marijuana Registry, pay for a medical card and then get medical cannabis from a dispensary.

The most beautiful part of medical marijuana is there are so many different compounds and things the plant can relieve. There's a lot of studies and documentation to see what can be done, said Millward. It's a very individual journey. We get so many questions that I refer to professionals. It's really just learning more together, that's why this is so vitalto have this educational series. Having that healthy community and having that safe space to come together is vital.

Millward launched Balanced Veterans a little over one year ago with a mission to create a safe space for the education, empowerment and advocacy of alternative therapies for veterans. Millward, born and raised in Philadelphia, served in the US Air Force for seven-and-a-half years. He was stationed throughout the country, spending time in Texas, Florida, Washington, and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. During his active duty, Millward was deployed to Iraq, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and South Korea.

I joined the Air Force at 17 with a parental signature. I was deployed to Qatar at 18 years-old and Iraq when I was 20, said Millward. I was on pharmaceuticals to combat PTSD. I struggled with pharmaceuticals for about five years during and after the military.

According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, 25 percent of veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan suffered from a substance abuse disorder. The organization reports that, substance abuse among veterans is strongly related to their exposure to combat.

We know that it (medical marijuana) is helping get back to a natural state and getting away from pharmaceuticals, said Millward. We want to help veterans in need, whatever that may look like that's not just cannabis. We really lean heavily on the mental health side of the house, not just using medications. Anything that's alternative therapy can help.

Beyond/Hello and Balanced Veterans will host monthly meetings that are free and open to the public to help educate local veterans in need. They will be held at Midnight Iris, 1708 Lombard Street, on the following dates: March 24, April 14 and May 19. All will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Veterans are welcome to attend, as well as families, caregivers and friends.

Together, veterans can see how other people succeed and will have other people they can talk to. Community is everything, said Millward. Most people are not getting the help they need. They're isolated. We get so many family members reaching out asking, How do I get a veteran help?

This is why we're creating events like this, were creating a safe space so people know they are not alone, added McQuade. Sometimes that's the first step of addressing other issues knowing youre not by yourself.

Why the controversy over chronic Lyme disease is important to everyone – The CT Mirror

Posted: at 1:42 am

A response to the CT Viewpoints op-ed Treating chronic Lyme disease: Is it medical fraud? By Lawrence Zemel MD and Paul G. Auwaerter MD, Dec 13, 2019.

The authors reference to so-called chronic Lyme disease ignores the substantial body of evidence that suggests Lyme disease can be chronic and infection can persist following treatment with antibiotics.

The first investigation into the effectiveness of antibiotics for the treatment of Lyme disease was published by Steere in 1983. The study was conducted at a time when prevailing thought held that antibiotics would cure all infectious disease caused by bacteria. Because the findings of the 1983 study were not consistent with that belief, the data were re-categorized to generate the expected result. Critical analysis of the data reveals, however, that nearly 50% of the patients in the study who were treated with antibiotics for 10-20 days continued to experience significant symptoms.

Other studies have produced similar results, yet the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) ignores independent research and continues to claim that Lyme disease at any stage of infection is cured by a short course of antibiotics.

A 2019 subcommittee report to the Tick Borne Disease Working Group (established by Congress in 2016), stated that the results of more recent studies in animal models by different investigators, lend support to the probability that the effects of persisting organisms are a source, if not the likely source, of ongoing symptoms in patients who have unresolved Lyme disease.

In 2019, The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) Working Group published a paper in which they systematically reviewed over 250 peer reviewed papers in the international literature and concluded that Lyme disease is the result of ongoing and active infection by any of several forms of B. burgdorferi capable of causing disease in humans.

Zemel and Auwaerter refer to an unsubstantiated notion that 50% of patients with Lyme disease test negative by standard laboratories but there is abundant evidence demonstrating that the two-tiered testing method recommended by the Centers for Disease Control is problematic.

There are many reasons why infected individuals may generate a negative result. Chief among them is the fact that the test relies on the ability of the infected individual to produce antibodies when Lyme bacteria have the ability to suppress the immune system preventing antibody production. Further, there are over 100 species of Borrelia in the U.S. (not all cause disease in humans) and the current two-tiered testing method misses the majority of them. Independent studies have shown these tests to correctly identify only about 56% of those with Lyme disease.

In a 2018 publication in its own journal, the IDSA admitted that reliable direct detection methods for active B. burgdorferi have been lacking in the past but are needed and appear achievable. Despite this, the IDSA guidelines fail to offer treatment options to patients who test negative but have the disease.

The authors suggestion that vulnerable patients need to be protected from Lyme-literate practitioners is both intentionally misleading and unsubstantiated.

Lyme-literate practitioners have a wide variety of medical backgrounds. Many are board-certified medical doctors with expertise in a variety of specialties and have additional training in tick-borne disease, while others are board-certified osteopathic physicians, naturopathic doctors, or nurse practitioners. Many are members of ILADS. Some practitioners have a background in integrative medicine, a holistic approach to health and wellness that combines conventional medicine with complementary and alternative medicine therapies grounded in science. Others are trained in functional medicine whose aim is to determine how and why illness occurs and to restore health by addressing the root cause of illness for each individual.

Some practitioners use a multimodal approach to address factors that might be keeping a patient sick including poor digestive health, food allergies, inflammation, toxicity, and hormone imbalance. They may use prescription and herbal medicines as well as other supplements. Because treating Lyme disease is a time consuming process, it fits poorly into the current model for medical reimbursement. As a result, many practitioners do not accept insurance but will provide documentation that can be submitted to an insurance carrier.

Just as they would with any other medical professional, patients are capable of exercising due diligence when selecting a Lyme practitioner to ensure that the approach to care is consistent with their preferences and beliefs.

The authors reference to the careful scientific rigor associated with the IDSA guidelines revision process does not hold up to scrutiny.

In 2006, Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal conducted a landmark anti-trust investigation into the IDSAs process for writing its 2006 Lyme disease guidelines. Blumenthals office uncovered undisclosed financial interests held by several of the most powerful IDSA panelists and found that the guidelines panel improperly ignored or minimized alternative medical opinion and evidence regarding Lyme disease, potentially raising serious questions about whether the recommendations reflected all relevant science.

One of the most egregious and dangerous recommendations by the IDSA is the use of a single dose of doxycycline to prevent the development of Lyme disease when given within 72 hours of a tick bite. This advice is based upon a single study with illogical and flawed methodology published nearly two decades ago. It has never been replicated. Data from this study show only that the dose was sufficient to prevent formation of the rash that sometimes develops at the site of a tick bite but not that it halted development of the disease itself. This treatment may promote antibiotic resistance and lead to negative antibody testing making diagnosis even more difficult.

Why this issue is important.

The problem that can arise when evidence is scarce is the misperception that guidelines are based on evidence rather than opinion. The evidence on which both sets of guidelines are based is weak. The authors of the ILADS guidelines acknowledge this directly and the fact that there two sets of conflicting guidelines. The authors of the IDSA guidelines fail to do so.

The 2011 report by the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), Clinical Practice Guidelines We Can Trust, the 2006 IDSA Lyme Disease Guidelines were cited as an example of lack of transparency in guidelines development to illustrate the problems associated with it.

When evidence is weak, clinician discretion is especially important. The ILADS guidelines allow for this and for shared decision-making between patient and practitioner. In contrast, the IDSA guidelines severely restrict the use of clinical judgment.

Why is this important even to those that dont have Lyme disease? Clinical practice guidelines greatly influence the practice of medicine. When lack of transparency, scientific bias, and financial conflicts of interest are allowed to affect them, it places the health of all of us at risk.

FACE TO FACE: Our own Dr King ready to shake the political throne – Bahamas Tribune

Posted: at 1:42 am

By FELICITY DARVILLE

It takes a lot of guts to start your own political movement. Many people have complaints about the system of government. People call in to the talk shows, they make their social media posts and they speak out at town meetings. Some people will complain to whoever will listen. But how often does someone take a bold step and actually form their own group and seek the support of the Bahamian people at the election polls? Very few have and hats off to those who have put themselves on the line in this way.

The Bahamian society can be harsh, judgmental and difficult to persuade to make a change, as much as people may complain. Dr Kevin King knows this. Yet in 2018, he introduced the Kingdom Government Movement (KGM). He refers to it as The Voice of Change and on Friday, March 20, he will introduce his first set of candidates. Eventually, the KGM will present a full slate of candidates who will contest every seat in the country. KGM sets out to become the first organisation to successfully upset the two-party trend that has defined the political culture of the country and come up with a win.

The KGM has a vision to accomplish certain things if elected, within the first 30 days in office. They include: reducing VAT from 12 percent, back to 7.5 percent; calling for a referendum to replace the Westminster system with a parliamentary republic system; calling for a referendum to replace the monarchy, Privy Council and Governor General as head of state; introducing a new Bahamian land ownership policy; implementing new, affordable housing systems; implementing new manufacturing, industries and renewable energy platforms.

So, what does it take to make such a bold move? Kevin says it was God himself who gave him the instruction to create the KGM with a philosophy to uphold the preamble of the Constitution of the Bahamas, which recognises the Bahamas as a Christian Nation under the supremacy of God.

Its not the first time he has received a Divine message. He first started hearing the voice of God speak to him at the tender age of eight and ever since, he has been listening to the voice that has allowed his life to unfold in a miraculous way. He was born in Nassau to Olive Louise King, nee Stubbs and he is one of eight siblings. His ancestors include Gabriel Nairn and Ophelia Ramsey of the Cove, Cat Island, and he is the grandson of Alfred King of Knowles, Cat Island and Maude King of Adelaide Village. He spent most of his childhood in Adelaide. Even to this day, Adelaide is still a quaint, sleepy village with beautiful natural habitats around. He also spent some of his formative years in Freeport, Grand Bahama.

I used to go out to the pine yard by myself and sit down, Kevin recalls of his childhood.

I was in tune with nature. Birds and insects would come around. Sometimes, I would be there hours on end. My childhood nickname was Gubby. My brothers and sisters would say, Gubby gone into the wilderness. Once I was finished my chores, thats where I would go, and God would speak to me.

When Kevin was in primary school, he would find moments to be alone to pray. When kids would go out at playtime, he would stay in class, and close the windows so that he could commune with God alone. He cherished opportunities to have conversations with God.

That continued all through my life, he shared. I was a part of every Christian movement that I could be growing up. As an adult, I was ordained as a prophet and a pastor. I have travelled all over the world ministering. It consumes me.

As a minister, Kevin made history when Messianic Jewish Ministry International, Hebrew Torah Institute and World Prayer Towers appointed him as the director of a new World Prayer Tower established in The Bahamas. It happened during a special dedication service at Bethany Assemblies of God where he was anointed with oil by Rabbi Daniel Jeshurun Vargas, founder and executive director.

Kevin grew up in the Anglican and Catholic churches, and came under the tutelage of Father Caldon in Adelaide, Bishop Michael Eldon, Father Brennan, Father Pestaina, and Father Richardson. Later on he attended the Assemblies of God, guided by Pastor Ferguson, Gilbert Roberts, Ernie Deloach, Bishop Jonathan Carey, Bishop Sobig Kemp, Pastor Roberts, and Bishop Ross Davis. He attended many Bible schools including West Indies College in Mandeville, Jamaica. He also sang in many gospel groups. To date, he has studied numerous religions all around the world.

In the 1980s his studies also took him to the US and there, he worked in sales and moved up the ranks to management. He also worked in the restaurant business and even served as a bodyguard at one point. Kevin appeared in television commercials and he also frequented WEDR, where he learned radio announcing from Leo, Jimmy G, and Super Jerry Rushing. He returned home and worked in sales for ZNS radio and television in Grand Bahama. For a while, he pursued his interest in law and studied with brilliant attorneys like Stephen Wilchcombe, Moses A Hall, Fayne Thompson and Kenneth Lewis.

By the 1990s, Kevin decided to change his profession. He took up medical studies at Concord Career Institute in Miramar, Florida. He was at the top of his class and was doing well when he said the voice of God spoke to him. He was instructed to study natural medicine and provide the people in his home country with this service. He took a big leap of faith and answered the call. He studied natural medicine in Sri Lanka, The Philippines, Hong Kong, Canada, Ecuador, New Mexico, India, Australia, and St. Kitts and Nevis. He has been a practicing physician for nearly three decades and is considered the pioneer of natural medicine in The Bahamas. He has had clinics in Freeport, Abaco and Nassau simultaneously.

Kevin has been knighted by St Johns of Jerusalem Knights of Malta for his success in Alternative Medicine. He was also knighted by The Orthodox Order of Saint John under Prince Michael of Russia for his worldwide humanitarian services. In 2004, he was commissioned by the college of Bishops to the nations.

In the same year, Kevin became an International Diplomat and was presented to former Prime Minister Perry Christie by His Excellency Charles Henry McWilliams, and his credentials were presented to then Minister of Foreign Affairs Fred Mitchell. He belongs to many world organisations in health and science and he has lectured to thousands throughout North America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia.

Kevin was elected as the Chairman of the World Organization of Natural Medicine at a world congress in Quito, Ecuador. He has met with world leaders and Heads of State of many countries around the world, both on diplomatic missions and advancing the cause of Alternative and Natural Medicines.

His latest calling, the KGM, he seeks to enlighten the people of The Bahamas on its philosophies of governance; in that it is NOT a movement of politics with all the nefarious nuances inherent in the party affiliations that is the basis of the Westminster system.

Kingdom Government is a righteous movement that has a purpose of purity to enact real and lasting change for the benefit of the people of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, at a time when it is necessary and needed the most, he said.

It is not a political party but rather a Paradigm of Progress. We accept this mantle of responsibility in abject humility with an edict of Divine service to the people of this country.

On April 6, 2018, Kevin made his inaugural speech. By October of the same year, he officially launched KGM in New Providence and in Grand Bahama. Samuel Johnson serves as the chairman and Calvin Greene is the national campaign manager. For more information on the Solutions Campaign which will release its candidates this March, visit kingdomgovernmentmovement.org or contact Dr Kevin King at sirkevinking@live.com, or call 810-2694 or 434-2831.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine: Get the Facts on CAM

Posted: February 15, 2020 at 9:52 am

What is complementary medicine?

Complementary medicine is a group of diagnostic and therapeutic disciplines that are used together with conventional medicine. An example of a complementary therapy is using aromatherapy to help lessen a patient's discomfort following surgery.

Complementary medicine is usually not taught or used in Western medical schools or hospitals. Complementary medicine includes a large number of practices and systems of health care that, for a variety of cultural, social, economic, or scientific reasons, have not been adopted by mainstream Western medicine.

Complementary medicine is different from alternative medicine. Whereas complementary medicine is used together with conventional medicine, alternative medicine is used in place of conventional medicine. An example of an alternative therapy is using a special diet to treat cancer instead of undergoing surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy that has been recommended by a physician.

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) can include the following:

Complementary and alternative cancer treatments are often lumped together. But to a cancer specialist, there is a big difference. Complementary therapy is used in addition to mainstream medical treatment. Alternative therapy is used instead of proven treatment. Another term you may hear is integrative medicine. This means combining CAM and standard care to try to treat cancer in a way that involves your body, mind and spirit. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) includes:

What is alternative medicine?

Alternative medicine includes dietary supplements, megadose vitamins, herbal preparations, special teas, massage therapy, magnet therapy, and spiritual healing.

What are complementary and alternative medicine therapies?

Complementary and alternative medicine therapies fall into five major categories, or domains:

Alternative medical systems are built upon complete systems of theory and practice. Often, these systems have evolved apart from and earlier than the conventional medical approach used in the United States. Examples of alternative medical systems that have developed in Western cultures include homeopathic medicine and naturopathic medicine. Examples of systems that have developed in non-Western cultures include traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda.

Mind-body medicine uses a variety of techniques designed to enhance the mind's capacity to affect bodily function and symptoms. Some techniques that were considered CAM in the past have become mainstream (for example, patient support groups and cognitive-behavioral therapy). Other mind-body techniques are still considered CAM, including meditation, prayer, mental healing, and therapies that use creative outlets such as art, music, or dance.

Biologically based therapies in CAM use substances found in nature, such as herbs, foods, and vitamins. Some examples include dietary supplements,3 herbal products, and the use of other so-called natural but as yet scientifically unproven therapies (for example, using shark cartilage to treat cancer).

Manipulative and body-based methods in CAM are based on manipulation and/or movement of one or more parts of the body. Some examples include chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation, and massage.

Energy therapies involve the use of energy fields. They are of two types:

Questions to ask your doctor when considering complimentary or alternative medicine therapies

Cancer patients using or considering complementary or alternative therapy should discuss this decision with their doctor or nurse, as they would any therapeutic approach. Some complementary and alternative therapies may interfere with standard treatment or may be harmful when used with conventional treatment. It is also a good idea to become informed about the therapy, including whether the results of scientific studies support the claims that are made for it. 1

Gwyneth Paltrows Goop Arts, and Science – The New York Times

Posted: at 9:52 am

To the Editor:

Re Whos Afraid of Gwyneth Paltrow? (Op-Ed, Feb. 4):

No one is afraid of Ms. Paltrow and her company, Goop. What people fear is the very real, very dangerous reality that we live in: a post-Enlightenment culture that eschews facts in favor of subjective narrative.

Anti-vax is real. Cancer patients dying because of alternative medicine is real. Global warming denialism is real.

If Elisa Albert and Jennifer Block want Ms. Paltrows imaginative treatments and practices to be viewed as seriously as science-based medicine, then they can subject those practices to rigorous, public scientific inquiry. No one is stopping them.

And a deserved patriarchal beat-down? Many of the finest and most scathing critiques of these anti-science techniques come from very qualified women whose feminist credentials and real-life clinical experience are beyond reproach.

This is not about empowerment. This is good old anti-science nonsense at a time when we can least afford it.

Stephen BellingerPacifica, Calif.

To the Editor:

Its about time that an article appeared that stands up to patriarchal science and medicine for minimizing the feminine, time-tested, results-driven approach to health and the wellness of our bodies.

There is no stopping the power of the more natural, feminine approach to life. Look how far yoga and eating more healthfully have come since the 1960s.

Now with the power of the internet, just maybe the feminine will rise to equal status and respect in every area of life. And what a better, more beautiful, harmonious and balanced life it will be!

Joy FreemanSan DiegoThe writer is the author of 7 Keys to Connection: How to Move Beyond the Physical and Emotional Trauma of a Disconnected Culture.

To the Editor:

Equating the rejection of Gwyneth Paltrows goofy pseudoscientific Goop products and practices with womens struggle to be recognized within science and medicine is exactly why we women are not taken seriously.

With the current climate of misogynistic thinking we cannot afford more stuff and nonsense, especially like Yoni eggs and vagina steaming.

Joy MottAlderson, W. Va.

To the Editor:

Re Recording Undercuts Presidents Claims (front page, Jan. 26):

President Trump was recorded as stating that the European Union is a group of countries that got together to screw the United States, its as simple as that. Unsurprisingly perhaps, this statement is uninformed and untrue.

At least from Secretary of State George C. Marshalls announcement in June 1947 of what became the Marshall Plan, United States policy has encouraged the European countries to cooperate with one another, first as aid recipients, then as alliance partners and soon thereafter as architects of their own integration.

They did this in their own construction of the European Economic Community between 1950 and 1957, the precursor in all but name of todays European Union.

Charles S. MaierCambridge, Mass. The writer is a research professor of history at Harvard.

To the Editor:

In Closing the Court of History (Op-Ed, Feb. 5), Matthew Connelly expresses concern about records deleted within federal agencies after a set time instead of being transferred into the National Archives and Records Administration.

Having worked on site with officials in federal agencies early in my NARA career to appraise paper records for transfer into the National Archives, I know that some 3 percent of federal records warrant designation as historical. This remains the case with electronic records.

As in the past, NARA can reassess federal records cleared for destruction 7, 25 or 75 years after creation as deletion dates near. Presidential records fall under a separate law. Ive worked on several moves of White House records to NARA. Since some 90 to 95 percent of President Barack Obamas presidential records were born digital (no paper version filed), he and NARA agreed there was no need to construct a separate presidential library building.

Rather, NARA employees hold President Obamas records (digital and paper) in its existing facilities for processing under a law passed in 1978.
