Who Is Mayim Bialik? A Terrible Choice for Jeopardy Host. Mother Jones – Mother Jones
Posted: August 14, 2021 at 1:20 am
Fight disinformation. Get a daily recap of the facts that matter. Sign up for the free Mother Jones newsletter.
Yesterday, the producers of the long-running gameshow Jeopardy! announced two new co-hosts to replace the late Alex Trebek: the shows executive producer, Mike Richards, and actress Mayim Bialik. Richards has his own issuesincluding being named in a pregnancy discrimination employment lawsuitbut Ill let others open that can of worms.
Instead, Ill focus on Bialik. On paper, she seems like a great choice for a show that celebrates the human intellect: Most famous for her starring roles in the TV sitcoms Blossom and The Big Bang Theory, she also has a PhD in neuroscience. Yet despite her scientific bona fides, Bialik has dabbled in realms that are distinctly anti-science. Lets take a look at her track record.
First, theres Bialiks mixed messages on vaccines. Back in 2009, she told People magazine that her family was non-vaccinating. In 2012, in a post on the website Kveller, she endorsed anti-vaccine parenting books, including one by Dr. Bob Sears, the California pediatrician who had his medical license revoked for handing out dubious medical exemptions for immunizations. Shes since backtracked on that statementin 2015, she said in a tweet that her kids were vaccinated. Last year, she released a YouTube video in which she said, cryptically, that she delayed vaccinations for reasons you dont necessarily get to know about. She has publicly endorsed the COVID-19 vaccines, yet she told Yahoo Lifein January, I have a lot of questions about the vaccine industry, as do a lot of people. I have a lot of questions about the profits involved.
Bialik is also a long-standing proponent of the pseudoscientific field of naturopathy. She has hawked a questionable supplement that claims to enhance brain function, including in an ad thats on air right now, and in which she leverages her degrees.Shes been featured recently on a naturopathy podcast. In April, on herown podcast, Bialik ran an episode called Alternative Medicine, Acupuncture & Adrenal FailureDoulas Do It Right. In the show, she interviewed midwife Elizabeth Bachner, whose naturopathic clinic in Los Angeles, Gracefull, peddles scientifically unfounded treatments, including IV therapy for anti-aging, oral chelation for heavy metals, and homeopathic hormone-balancing injections.
But wait, theres more: Abundant research shows that birth control pills and devices are safe and effective. Still, Bialik has joined forces with actress Ricki Lake on her crusade against hormonal contraception. Last year, she was a speaker at Lakes Body Literacy Summit, which warned women about the supposed dangers of the pill. Other presenters included midwife Aviva Romm, a notorious vaccine skeptic. (After this piece was published, Romm told Mother Jones that she does not consider herself a vaccine skeptic and has advocated for COVID-19 vaccines, though she did write a book about alternatives to vaccines.) Bialik also hosted Lake on an episode of her podcast dedicated to criticizing birth control pills.
I could go on. Bialik has worked extensively with La Leche League, an organization that frequently promotes some scientifically dubious practices, including the discredited notion that birth interventions such as IV fluids and epidurals can prevent women from breastfeeding. Shes also written a book about attachment parenting, a child-rearing philosophy that, among other questionable teachings, warns parents that sleep training babies will permanently damage them. And all of this isnt even to mention Bialiks weird hypocrisy on feminism: Shes written an empowerment book for teen girls, yet in a 2017 New York Times op-ed, she implied that women invite sexual harassment by dressing immodestly.
Its incredibly depressing that someone as accomplished as Bialik promotes medical and scientific misinformation. But its beyond disappointing that Jeopardy!a show that is literally about factswould choose her to be its public face. Ill take someone else, please for $1,000.
This piece has been updated.

Pakistan faces a solid challenge in terms of boosting its exports. The financial managers of Pakistan have emphasised a few sectors such as textiles, sporting goods, etc. to increase Pakistans exports. But with globalisation, new opportunities have been emerging, and Pakistan has to diversify its focus to increase its exports, such as also focusing on the alternate medicine industry.
According to the latest research, the global market of the alternative medicines industry will reach an astounding $500 billion by 2030. The developed world holds the majority share in this sector and Pakistan is blessed to be part of this niche group because of just one company, Hamdard Laboratories (Waqf) Pakistan. Sadia Rashid, President of Hamdard Pakistan, is on record saying that, with the correct strategy, Pakistan can increase its exports by more than $1 billion through alternative herbal products. This is a matter of pride for Pakistan that a company with a humble start-up now represents Pakistan globally.
How it began
Hamdard started its journey from a small shop in Delhi, in 1906. Founded by an accomplished physician, Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed, Hamdard quickly gained renown as a distinguished eastern medicine manufacturer. After the creation of Pakistan, his younger son and a visionary physician, Hakim Mohammed Said, migrated to the newly-formed country and started Hamdard Pakistan in a two-room rented clinic of Tibb-i-Unani in 1948. Under his leadership, Hamdard soon became a success story with its respected and well-liked products, especially the Rooh Afza syrup and effective herbal medicines. Hamdard Pakistan has been leading the Unani/herbal industry since its inception. Said not only revolutionised the field of Unani Tibb in Pakistan but also paved the way for Pakistan to export Unani medicines globally by having WHO recognise the efficacy of alternative medicines.
R&D initiatives
Hamdard Pakistan has been a shining example for all herbal medicine manufacturers as a leading fast-track company, with a strong focus on production involving innovation and technological sophistication. The central structure of Hamdard Laboratories is based in Pakistans industrial hub and the port city of Karachi. It comprises the headquarters and two manufacturing units, including a new large unit Hamdard Industrial Complex (HIC). Apart from the Karachi headquarters, there are zonal offices in Lahore, Rawalpindi and Peshawar. Even after WHOs recognition, Said continued to research various herbs and their compositions throughout his life. His legacy continues as Hamdard remains steadfast in playing a defining role in research and development with a dedicated research department operated by a team of professional researchers and hakims.
In 2020, Hamdard introduced three new products Doodh Rooh Afza; Hamdard Honey a 100 per cent natural product; and Sualin Lozenges herbal relief for throat pain, inflammation and cough.
Network of herbal clinics
In every city, Hamdards Matabs (clinics) have been providing essential free medical check-ups to lower-middle and lower-income households at their doorsteps. It has also has set up various hospitals of both Eastern and Western systems of medicine all over the country. Recently, Hamdard has initiated a drive to digitalise all herbal clinics and the first-ever digital herbal clinic has started its operations in Karachi.
Social initiatives
Said was also a philanthropist, an educationist and a visionary reformer, who took it upon himself to develop the health and education sectors of Pakistan. Hamdard Pakistan also operates schools, colleges and the largest private sector university in the country Hamdard University (HU), built-in Madinat al-Hikmah (City of Education, Science and Culture).
He established the Hamdard Foundation Pakistan to judiciously use the funds being handed over to it by Hamdard Laboratories. These are used for the promotion of health, education and social uplift, in line with his vision and mission service to the nation and humanity.
Women empowerment
The terms women empowerment and gender equality are not new to Hamdard because behind its stellar success is the struggle and determination of empowered women. Today, Hamdard is among the few companies where women are given equal opportunities to assume leadership roles.
Promise of quality
Hamdard Laboratories Pakistan ensures the quality and standard of its products, adhering to the international standards and laws, prescribed by ISO and WHO. All of Hamdards products are duly registered with authorities such as the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP). Hamdard follows zero-tolerance towards quality compromise. To maintain quality and a high standard, the organisation takes the following measures:
1.Procurement of the best quality of raw material.
2.Following good manufacturing
practices.
3.Conducting regular checks on raw material: in-process/intermediate material and finished products, to maintain quality control
4.Giving importance to the training of all personnel/employees, involved in production processes, under the policy of quality control.
Representing Pakistan
Hamdard Pakistan is also an ambassador of its home base. Both Said and his daughter, Rashid, have been active in representing Pakistan globally. The Emperor and the Government of Japan have conferred the prestigious Order of The Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon on Rashid, who is the president of the Pakistan-Japan Cultural Association (PJCA), in recognition of her contribution to promoting cultural relations and mutual understanding between Japan and Pakistan. Her father, Said, played an unforgettable role in strengthening Pakistan-China bilateral relations. His efforts were duly recognised and greatly appreciated by the Chinese government.
Having a company with such a rich history of patriotism and service to the nation, the Government of Pakistan should develop a joint platform with Hamdard Pakistan. With a combined strategy, the government can increase the countrys exports in a limited amount of time. The international demand and growth of herbal products is a huge sector, and Pakistan must act in time before the western world realises its true potential and bags the market.

Understanding Depression and Anxiety in People with Breast Cancer PsychCentral.com – PsychCentral.com
Posted: at 1:20 am
Having breast cancer and going through treatment can stir up all kinds of emotions. You might cycle through a range of feelings, including sadness, anger, disbelief, and grief.
Its common to feel depressed or anxious about a disease that affects your life in so many ways. Pain, tiredness, and other cancer symptoms make it hard to sleep and concentrate. Juggling treatments with work and family responsibilities can be stressful.
Some of the treatments you take to slow or stop your cancer could cause or worsen depression. Chemotherapy and hormone therapies like tamoxifen are among them.
Depression affects your quality of life and outlook, too. When youre feeling this way, you may be less likely to stay on the treatment you need to get well.
Sometimes the sadness is short-lived. But when symptoms persist, day after day, you could have major depressive disorder, also known as clinical depression.
Know that depression is treatable. Watching for the symptoms and getting help if you need it can help you feel better. A review of several studies finds that treating depression when you have breast cancer might also help you live longer.
About 1 in 3 people with breast cancer have depression. Youre more likely to become depressed if you:
Depression is more likely to affect you in the first year of having cancer when youre actively going through treatment. But studies find that depression can continue for more than 5 years after your diagnosis.
Major depression is when you have symptoms like these most of the day, every day for 2 or more weeks:
Though depression is common in people with breast cancer, its easy to miss signs like these. If you might find it helpful to speak with a doctor if you think you might be depressed.
While its OK to feel overwhelmed when you have breast cancer, you dont have to live with depression. Better outcomes are possible once theres a diagnosis and you begin treatment. Once you notice symptoms of depression, you might consider reaching out to a primary care doctor.
Your doctor can help you figure out whether your feelings are a side effect of your treatment. If a cancer medicine you take is causing these feelings, you may be able to switch to something else.
If your doctor suspects you have depression, they can refer you to a mental health professional. This might be a psychiatrist, psychologist, or clinical social worker.
Managing depression symptoms related to breast cancer can involve therapy, medication, or a combination of both treatments.
Therapy. Talking through your feelings with a mental health professional is one way to treat depression. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of treatment for depression. With this approach, the therapist helps you reframe negative thoughts into more positive thoughts.
Therapy can happen one-on-one between you and the therapist or with a group of people. In a 2019 study of 100 participants, group therapy worked well at reducing anxiety and depression in people with breast cancer.
Antidepressants. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are two commonly prescribed medicines for treating depression. Although these drugs are good at relieving symptoms, they may be a problem for some people with breast cancer.
Theres some evidence that SSRIs might help breast cancer spread by increasing levels of the hormone prolactin. These drugs might also make the breast cancer drug tamoxifen less effective. Although antidepressants havent been proven unsafe for people with breast cancer. You can have a conversation with your doctor if youre thinking about taking them.
A few complementary and alternative treatments are also helpful for improving mood, stress, and sleep quality, including:
It helps to have people you can lean on when youre going through a difficult time. Research finds that people with breast cancer who have more family support are at a lower risk of depression.
Your support doesnt have to come from family members. Friends, co-workers, neighbors, and your partner can all offer a compassionate ear when you feel low.
A few organizations offer support groups and other services for people with cancer and depression. Here are a few worth checking out:
Its common to experience depression when you have breast cancer. Feelings of distress might not ease up when you finish breast cancer treatment. Its helpful to keep checking in with a mental health professional for as long as you have symptoms.
There are several approaches to manage symptoms and numerous avenues to find the support you seek. Working with a healthcare team can help you find what would work best for you.

Why integrated medicine is more than just a passing craze – India Today
Posted: at 1:20 am
In a recent interview to India Today, Delhi-based designer Rina Singh, who had suffered from Covid in mid-April, talked about how even weeks into her recovery, she was far from her pre-Covid self. Dealing with erratic sleeping patterns, digestive issues and compromised energy levels, among a host of other problems, she spoke of a need to evolve an everyday living practice that is more holistic. Like fashion, even medicine is a creative pursuit and no one-size-fits-all works in this scenario, she said.
In this lies the draw of integrative or integrated medicine. Dr R.B. Smarta, CMD-interlink and vice-president of Health Foods and Dietary Supplements Association (HADSA) explains: Integrated medicine is a patient-centric approach and not related to only one particular Pathy (allopathy, homeopathy, etc) of medicines. Integrated medicinal approaches can be described as the coordinated and evidence-based way of combining conventional and less conventional medicinal practices to deliver overall care to a patient. Integrated medicine, he adds, covers conventional, complementary and alternative medicines.
There are enough medicines to take care of the symptoms, but theres no system to look at the root cause of an illness and integrative medicine addresses that, says Luke Coutinho, holistic lifestyle coach-integrative and lifestyle medicine, and founder of YouCare by Luke Coutinho. For instance, he says, there are pills to suppress a headache, but headaches keep coming back. The root cause could be anything, ranging from dehydration to constipation, lack of sleep, or emotional stress. So, asks Coutinho, can a pill help when a headache is actually caused by inadequate water intake?
An important question to ask here is, why is it that some of those who test positive for Covid are asymptomatic, while others suffer terribly? Why is it that some heal at home while others need a ventilator and oxygen support?
According to Dr Smarta, The pandemic has focussed tremendous attention on immune health and, consequently, on preventive measures through complementary and integrative approaches. Lockdown-induced lifestyle changes including lack of exercise, sleep disorders, unhealthy eating patterns and several psychological symptoms, including depression, have resulted in the need for such integrated approaches along with conventional medicines. An integrated medicinal approach includes health supplements and nutritional medicines (nutraceuticals and traditional medicines), exercise, nature therapy, botanical medicines and holistic intervention to help people strengthen their physical and mental resilience during and post infection, adds Dr Smarta.
However, it is important to remember that using an integrated approach does not mean skipping conventional practices entirely. Diseases are classified into two parts: low involvement, low risk; and high involvement, high risk. Based on the type of ailment, integrated medicine is employed in the treatment. For example, for minor ailments like mild pain and anxiety, hot flashes, etc, integrated medicines can be employed under a doctors supervision. However, for major illnesses, conventional medicine that has evolved over ages is the first line of treatment. Integrated approaches are employed at the disease prevention and the recovery (rehabilitation) stage, says Dr Smarta.
For Coutinho, its a basic set of questions you need to ask yourself. Do you expect a burnt-out body and mind to really support your immune system? Do you expect a sleep-deprived body to have sufficient energy to drive its complex immune system? Do you expect a body riddled with inflammation and lifestyle ailments to support your immunity the way you expect it to? Do you expect your lungs burdened with smoking and substance abuse to really support you in this crisis? Do you expect a stressed-out mind to have a positive impact on your physical self? Do you expect a sedentary body to be physically fit? Nutrition-performance and nutrition-fitness-meditation would be my mantra through which we can practice an integrated approach to healing and wellness in everyday life. Healthy dietary habits are the key to a disease-free body and healthy mind. Performance nutrition can be described as the extra nutrition required to boost energy levels. In order to multi-task, basic nutrition is not enough. Hence performance nutrition is necessary, says Dr Smarta.
Diet educationist, pharmacist and author Lokendra Tomar agrees: Healing takes place with internal effort; it is not carried out by medicines alone. Anti-infectives and steroids may help, but internal capacity to bolster healing comes with nutrition. Internal structure requires nutrients, metals such as zinc and selenium, vitamin C to repair and heal tissues, protein and minerals. All of these are derived from food and help the body repair and heal damage.
Coutinho sums it up: Medicines with zero focus on lifestyle are a failed approach. One prescription after another with no emphasis on lifestyle change is the reason why the world is stuck in chronic illnesses today. The focus needs to be on building a strong immune system holistically.

Helping diabetic pets live happily ever after – American Veterinary Medical Association

Pancake, a male Siamese cat, had unregulated diabetes six months after first being diagnosed with the diseaseby his owner, a physician.
The obese cat had been on various insulins and dosing schemes. His owner measured his blood glucose two to four times daily and gave him an insulin dose on the basis of the measurements, similar to what she might have recommended for her human patients. He had persistently high blood glucose in the face of a rising insulin dose.
Dr. Jessica Pritchard, a clinical assistant professor of small animal internal medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, described Pancakes case while presenting the session Updated Strategies for Monitoring Diabetes and Troubleshooting Your Difficult Diabetics at AVMA Virtual Convention 2021 in July.
Dr. Pritchard picked one dose of insulin for Pancake and did a blood glucose curve using a flash continuous glucose monitor. The cat turned out to be not insulin resistant but overdosed. A follow-up curve found the insulin duration was too long, so Dr. Pritchard switched to an insulin with a shorter duration. She also added a weight-loss plan.
Pancakes case illustrates a few of the intricacies of managing diabetes mellitus in pets. Diagnosing the disease in cats and dogs is pretty straightforward, but treatment and monitoring can be complexespecially with more options available than ever, including flash continuous glucose monitors, subject of another session at AVMA Virtual Convention 2021.
Banfield Pet Hospitals State of Pet Health 2016 Report found that diabetes mellitus in dogs increased by 79.7% between 2006 and 2015, to 23.6 cases per 10,000 dogs. Prevalence in cats increased by 18.1% over the same time frame, to 67.6 cases per 10,000 cats. Obesity is one risk factor for diabetes, and more than half of cats and dogs in the United States are overweight, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention.
Among recent resources to help veterinarians treat diabetic pets are the 2018 AAHA Diabetes Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats from the American Animal Hospital Association and the Diabetes Educational Toolkit for managing cats released in 2019 by the American Association of Feline Practitioners.
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a treatable condition that requires a committed effort by veterinarian and client, according to the AAHA guidelines. Due to many factors that affect the diabetic state, a pets changing condition, and variable response to therapy, management of DM is often complicated. Success requires understanding of current scientific evidence and sound clinical judgment. Each patient requires an individualized treatment plan, frequent reassessment, and modification of that plan based on the patients response.
According to the guidelines, diagnosis of diabetes mellitus is based on persistent glucosuria and hyperglycemia and the presence of characteristic clinical signs such as polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, and weight loss.
Insulin and dietary modifications are the mainstays of treatment for diabetes mellitus in cats and dogs. Remission is possible in cats.
According to the AAFPs Diabetes Educational Toolkit: Effective treatment is based on a combination of client goals, finances, implementation of the treatment plan, and the patients response. It is very important to establish goals with the owner at the initiation of treatment and to maintain a frequent, open dialogue.
For cats, the toolkit recommends a low-carbohydrate diet along with maintaining weight if the cat has a good body condition score or managing obesity. The toolkit lists lente, glargine, protamine zinc insulin, and detemir as insulin options for cats.
According to the AAHA guidelines, treatment of diabetes mellitus in dogs always requires insulin. The guidelines list lente, glargine, protamine zinc insulin, and neutral protamine hagedorn as insulin options for dogs.
Higher-fiber diets are recommended for diabetic dogs, either diets designed for weight maintenance in dogs that are not obese or diets designed for weight loss in obese dogs.
Monitoring diabetic pets can be challenging, according to the AAHA guidelines. Among various monitoring methods, a blood glucose curve is the only way to know how to appropriately change an insulin dose.
The traditional approach to getting a glucose curve involves hospitalizing the patient to have measurements taken. Recently, veterinarians have started to use flash continuous glucose monitors for at-home glucose curves.
Dr. Lawren Durocher-Babek, a specialist in small animal internal medicine at 9 Lives Hong Kong, presented Rational Use of Flash Continuous Glucose Monitors in Small Animal Medicine in July at AVMA Virtual Convention 2021.
FCGMs consist of a sensor that attaches to an animal for up to two weeks along with a reader or smartphone to collect data. Dr. Durocher-Babek explained that FCGMs are continuous glucose monitors that check glucose one moment at a time.
The sensor has a filament that samples interstitial fluid once a minute to measure glucose. The data points are merged every 15 minutes and held in the sensor for up to eight hours. A reader or smartphone is used to scan the sensor, and then data are transferred to the web, where they are analyzed and stored.
Problems with FCGMs include that they are inaccurate at very low ranges of glucose, dehydration can cause issues, they dont always last two weeks, pets can have skin reactions, and owners can be overly anxious.
Why should veterinarians consider using flash continuous glucose monitors? FCGMs are able to catch rebound hyperglycemia after an insulin dose that is too high, which can lead to better regulation. There is a decreased stress response in pets, in comparison with blood draws and usually a hospital stay. The system is possibly cheaper in the long run. And FCGMs allow pet owners to be more involved.
The FreeStyle Libre is the type of FCGM that is most commonly used in veterinary practice. Among the ideal patients for FCGMs are the newly diagnosed, difficult-to-control diabetics, pets with diabetic ketoacidosis, cats going into remission, and surgical patients. The ideal clients are those who are not too anxious, will listen to instructions, and want to be involved.
In her practice, Dr. Durocher-Babek usually places the FCGM while the patient is in the hospital. She replaces the sensor every two weeks until the patient is regulated. Then she places a sensor every three to six months. When the sensor is in place, owners email her weekly with updates, and then she looks at the data.
Dr. Durocher-Babeks take-home points were to still evaluate clinical signs, give clear instructions to owners, and know that FCGMs are not perfect but still good for trends.
She said, This is a good tool but does not take the place of a good veterinarian.
Dr. Pritchard, Pancakes veterinarian, said her goals for diabetes management in dogs and cats are to control clinical signs and have an absence of hypoglycemia. She said difficult-to-control diabetics are pets with recurrent hypoglycemia or pets with persistent hyperglycemia and clinical signs.
Dr. Pritchard started her talk at AVMA Virtual Convention 2021 by covering basic monitoring and glucose curves before delving into investigation of the uncontrolled diabetic.
For the initial investigation, Dr. Pritchard said, start by ensuring proper insulin handling. Watch the owner give the insulin. Questions to ask: Is the insulin shaken or rolled? Where is it stored? Who gives the insulin usually? Are there changes in color, consistency, or clarity?
Next, check mealtime habits. Is the owner feeding meals or free-feeding? Is the owner giving snacks between meals? Have there been diet changes recently? If the pet wont eat its diet, try changing the diet to something the pet will eat reliably. Other options might be an appetite stimulant or feeding tube. If another pet is eating the food, try a feeder with radio-frequency identification.
Finally, take a thorough drug history. Among the things that are likely to cause insulin resistance are steroids and cyclosporine, plus hormones in intact animals. Dont forget alternative routes of exposure such as owners hormone creams or pets eye drops, topical sprays, or ear drops. If the pets medications are the problem, ensure the drugs are necessary, evaluate alternative administration routes, evaluate alternative drugs, or increase the insulin dose.
For further investigation of the uncontrolled diabetic pet, Dr. Pritchard said, there is no substitute for a good history and physical examination. Has the owner noticed anything new at home? Have there been changes in the hair coat or dental changes? Has a goiter developed? Has the pet gained weight to the point of obesity?
Dr. Pritchard recommended that baseline diagnostics should consist of weight, the physical examination, a complete blood count, chemistry with triglycerides, urinalysis, urine culture, and a thyroid panel.
Run additional diagnostics on the basis of suspected concurrent conditions. These could include hypothyroidism, urinary tract infection, renal disease, hypertriglyceridemia, feline hypersomatotropism, canine hyperadrenocorticism, and pancreatitis.
Dr. Pritchard concluded her talk by covering additional monitoring strategies, including at-home urine tests.
Dont underestimate what your clients can and will do, she said.

by Dibya Jyoti Borah
North East India is geographically situated in one of the richest biological reservoirs of the world. Endowed with numerous varieties of flora and fauna, the entire region is an important segment of the Indo-Myanmar biodiversity hotspot, one of the 34 global ones.
The existence of such biodiversity greatly shapes the historical, cultural, and sociological formation of the traditional knowledge system prevalent in Northeast India.
The prevailing traditional medicine practiced by different communities forms one of the key bedrocks of the indigenous knowledge system. North East India can be termed as a repository of ethnic traditional medicines which potential is yet to be tapped properly in todays context.
The unique natural diversity also permeates the sphere of cultural and ethnic identity in the Northeast. The distinct indigenous communities of the region have their own and rich traditional knowledge and utilising the environment in daily life. The knowledge and mode of utilisation of local plants vary with ethnic groups.
Knowledge of traditional medicine has been accumulated over many generations. This kind of knowledge can come from experience, be passed down verbally mostly, or by script. This knowledge is based on their needs, instinct, observation, trial and error, and long experience
As defined by WHO- It is the sum total of the knowledge, skills, and practices based on the theories, beliefs, and experiences indigenous to different cultures, whether explicable or not, used in the maintenance of health, as well as in the prevention, diagnosis, improvement or treatment of physical and mental illnesses.
Practices of traditional medicine vary greatly from country to country, in the case of Northeast India, it varies from tribe to tribe, as they are influenced by factors such as cultural traits, history, ethos, rituals, and philosophy. Contrary to Western biomedicine, their theory and application are quite different from those of conventional medicine.
The methods employed by Indigenous medicine are highly holistic, unlike western Medicare which revolves around quick fixes. Alternative medical practitioners will not just concentrate on the reduction of symptoms but on long-term changes within the lifestyle of the patient, such as changes in environment and attention to the community to which an individual belongs. Long historical use of many practices of traditional medicine, including experience passed on from generation to generation, has demonstrated its safety and efficacy.
Among other communities ,the practice of traditional ethnobotanical medicine by the Dimasas finds a special mention. Like other indigenous people, herbal medicine and treatment play a significant role in their health care system inherited from past generations. The tribesman has an impressive knowledge about herbs, herbal materials, herbal preparations, and finished herbal products. Their system of therapy can be broadly divided into mainly two categories:
Therapeutic activity
Therapeutic activity refers to the successful prevention, diagnosis and treatment of physical and mental illnesses
Active ingredients
Active ingredients refer to ingredients of herbal medicines with therapeutic activity.

Traditional knowledge is considered as a body of information and a set of skills that are in a constant state of change. Undoubtedly, potentialities of indigenous medicine have been overshadowed by Modern health care systems powered by western bio-medicine. The information about folk medicine of North East India is still not gathered in a systemic way culminating in a loss of many local medicines and extinction of medicinal herbs. However, more comprehensive research is needed to reclaim its efficacy. Integration of both modern health care system and traditional can help to formulate robust alternative health care for future
