Alternative Medicine: 4 Stress and Anxiety Reducing Treatments – Middletown Media
Posted: October 7, 2021 at 4:21 pm
Alternative medicine gets a bit of a bad reputation. Primarily as being palmed off by quacks just looking to make a quick buck. But the landscape of alternative treatments has changed as more research is done into the subject.
Now, many alternative therapies are great options for relieving stress, anxiety, and many other health issues. And not just because someone said they will. But because scientific research shows them working. However, its worth pointing out that alternative treatments arent for everyone. Some people will need traditional medicine to help their ailments. But, at the same time, others will be able to use alternative therapies to complement conventional medical care.
Whatever way you decide to incorporate holistic treatments into your life, here are four alternative therapies for relieving stress and anxiety that work.
Supplements have a long history of being helpful to us. However, thanks to modern research, its becoming more and more evident that many things in nature can provide us with much more than initially thought.
Mushrooms have always been thought of as being significant as part of a healthy diet. But its been found that there are mushrooms out there that do more than keep us healthy. Its not the mushrooms youll be used to seeing either; its the more exotic ones that seem to hold the key to inner calm and more robust immune systems.
Lions Mane has been found to improve your brain function and is helpful to those with diseases that affect brain function. In addition, there are components found in Reishi mushrooms that could help strengthen the immune system in its fight against cancer. Thanks to all this research and the positive results, mushrooms are having a moment. And supplements of the exotic ones are widely available online.
Mushrooms are rich in B vitamins that are widely regarded as stress-reducing vitamins and enable the nervous system to function correctly. Cordyceps and Reishi mushrooms are considered the best for helping reduce symptoms of anxiety and promote feelings of calm.
There has been a lot of research into the CBD component of Marijuana. Unlike its THC friend, CBD has no psychoactive properties. It does, however, contain the muscle and body relaxing properties that Marijuana is famous for as alternative medicine.
Thats precisely why CBD has become so popular. People can help ease pain, nausea, and tiredness symptoms without having their typical day affected. And when you find the correct dosage, CBD is a brilliant stress reliever by helping reduce anxiety and promote better sleep.
Thanks to its popularity, CBD comes in so many different forms. From oils to CBD gummies, theres something for everyone on the market. And they all put you in control of your dosage, so its easy to find what works best for you.
Not to be confused with Acupuncture, Acupressure is where practitioners use their hands elbows, or feet to apply pressure to particular points on the body. These points are called meridians. The theory is that these meridians carry energy around the body, and illness occurs when one becomes blocked or out of balance.
Acupressure is used to unblock these channels and allow the energy to flow normally. And there are a lot of studies that have found some very positive results from this alternative therapy. For example, a study with a group of kids found that Acupressure helped them sleep better. In addition, a study revealed the treatment was effective at relieving pain from lower back pain to labor pains.
There have even been a range of studies that have found Acupressure has a positive effect on mental health. Capable of relieving stress and symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Much like Acupressure, Reflexology involves applying pressure to specific areas. But this time, theyre on the hands, feet, or ears. There are different points on each of these body parts that correspond to specific areas in the body. Applying pressure is believed to affect these areas positively.
Reflexology is widely used as an alternative medicine alongside more traditional methods. Plenty of studies show Reflexology being a great benefit to people dealing with depression, anxiety, and general stress.
There are plenty of alternative medicine treatments that patients wanting to relieve stress and anxiety can turn to. And we may find this happening more and more as traditional medicine fails to help patients, causing them more harm than good.
As with any treatment, research or chatting to a professional is the best place to start when youre unsure. Professionals will suggest the best treatment for you and are there if you have any questions.
You can use alternative methods in any way you want. Whether thats on their own or alongside traditional medicine, if you are already on medication before starting an alternative treatment, consult your doctor to make sure they wont interact with each other. This means you can ensure youll get the most out of all your treatments.

Acupuncture for Depression: Effectiveness and Points – PsychCentral.com
Posted: at 4:21 pm
Acupuncture is a form of ancient Chinese medicine that may offer many health benefits. Research suggests it may also help treat depression.
Acupuncture is a widely practiced form of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), dating back nearly 3,000 years to 100 B.C.
As a form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), acupuncture is traditionally used to treat a number of physical ailments.
In recent years, acupuncture has become recognized as a potential alternative treatment for mood disorders like depression.
According to TCM, a vital life force, or qi, flows through the body to maintain harmony, balance, and overall health. A blockage of qi could create an imbalance of yin and yang energy, and lead to various forms of illness and disease.
According to TCM, the human body has more than 2,000 acupuncture points, or acupoints. Each is connected by channels or meridians.
A licensed acupuncturist inserts thin metal needles into specific acupoints on the body to stimulate the flow of qi to increase blood flow to the organs. When qi is flowing freely through the meridians, the organs are tonified to improve health and well-being.
Once widely regarded as a pseudoscience, acupuncture has become increasingly accepted by Western medicine. In fact, its the most researched form of TCM.
Just before the turn of the century, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) acknowledged the potential therapeutic benefits of acupuncture.
Recent studies suggest that acupuncture may treat health conditions such as:
Acupuncture needles are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The process of inserting acupuncture needles into the skin is minimally invasive and usually pain-free.
Many people feel a temporary dull or aching sensation upon insertion of the needles as stagnant or blocked qi starts to release, according to TCM. The needles should only cause prolonged pain if they are inserted incorrectly.
Some acupuncturists may use manual, heated, or electrical stimulation, while others will leave the room while the needles are in place. Treatments can range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes per session.
Some acupuncturists may use other forms of acupuncture during treatment. These include:
Many licensed acupuncturists are also skilled herbalists, and may recommend Chinese herbal formulas to their clients to supplement their treatment.
A growing body of research suggests that acupuncture may offer relief from symptoms associated with depression, but as a 2020 research review notes, large-scale rigorous studies are still needed.
Jon E. Walker, L.Ac, a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist at Bull City Acupuncture in Durham, North Carolina, treats a number of conditions with acupuncture. He says that comorbid anxiety and depressive disorder is a common complaint among people visiting his clinic.
To treat depression, acupuncturists like Walker target specific acupoints in the body to treat associated symptoms to release mood- and emotion-regulating hormones.
While scientific research questions the theory of qi stagnation, research from 2014 suggests that acupuncture releases endorphins and may help stimulate blood flow. An increase in endorphins may provide a boost for the mind and body, which could offer relief from some depression symptoms.
According to Walker, acupuncture may treat depression by regulating key components in the brain and central nervous system. These include:
Walker explains that in his acupuncture practice, people with mild to moderate depression may experience positive changes within 8 to 12 treatments over 4 to 6 weeks, but the duration and frequency of treatment can vary.
It all depends on the [person], the severity of their symptoms, and how they respond to the treatment, he says. Some [people] start feeling better right away, others take more time.
An acupuncturist chooses specific acupoints on the body to stimulate energetic channels or meridians to treat depression based on their assessment of the client.
Each person and their depression are unique and are best treated as such, Walker says. There are some common patterns, but [individuals] are rarely textbook.
Though treatment can vary, Walker says that common acupoints associated with depression symptoms include:
Acupuncture needles may also be placed in the ear to stimulate the heart, liver, or lung, including two key acupoints:
When combined with antidepressant medication, research shows that acupuncture may be effective. However, high-quality evidence is often lacking.
A 2018 research review indicates that acupuncture combined with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may be more effective than antidepressants alone for mild to moderate depression, but the studies were largely biased.
In addition, a 2019 research review suggests that acupuncture, when provided in proper doses and combined with antidepressants, may reduce symptoms associated with major depressive disorder.
Results suggest a reduction in side effects from medication and an improvement in quality of life, but the findings are also potentially biased.
Research suggests that acupuncture may be just as effective as psychotherapy to treat depression.
Results from a randomized controlled trial from 2013 dont show a significant difference between acupuncture and counseling for treating depression, indicating that both interventions were beneficial at 3- and 12-month follow-ups compared with standard care.
A 2014 study indicates that when combined with psychotherapy, acupuncture can be an effective form of treatment for depression. Results suggest that people were more actively engaged with their treatment during the counseling process.
Of course, whether an individual should use acupuncture as the sole treatment for their depression, or as a substitute or complement for medication or therapy, will depend on their circumstances, how they respond to treatment, and any recommendations from their doctor or mental health professional.
Some [people] do not respond well to medication or therapy or acupuncture, Walker says. We have to take it on a case-by-case basis.
While studies show that acupuncture can be effective for treating chronic pain, some researchers have argued that improvements could be attributed to a placebo effect.
As research from 2019 points out, there may be a minimal difference in improvements in chronic pain from acupuncture versus sham acupuncture (acupuncture performed incorrectly), suggesting that acupuncture may have a mega-placebo effect.
At the same time, a 2020 research review found that acupuncture treatment for insomnia in people with major depressive disorder was effective, but not because of a placebo effect.
Rather, the review noted acupuncture significantly improved sleep quality in people with depression, compared with sham acupuncture.
Acupuncture is recognized as a safe alternative or complementary treatment for depression with few side effects. In general, there are no concerns with acupuncture and medication interaction.
The most common side effects include:
Acupuncture may be an effective therapeutic approach to treat depression when combined with medication, psychotherapy, or both.
Depending on the severity of your symptoms, acupuncture may offer a potential alternative to antidepressant medications, but its essential to always check with a healthcare professional first. Dont stop taking any medication without their go-ahead.
Acupuncture treatment can be pricey, but many clinics offer sliding scale or community pricing. You can also check with your insurance provider, if you have one, to see whether acupuncture treatments are covered.
When looking for an acupuncturist, be sure theyve obtained appropriate licensure.
Acupuncture can be used as a safe, supplemental treatment to standard care, Walker says. Its probable that the combination of medication, therapy, and acupuncture provides the best outcomes.
Still, keep in mind that it ultimately depends on what works best for you.

Turning Point Therapeutics Granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation for Repotrectinib Treatment in Patients with NTRK-Positive, TKI-Pretreated…
Posted: at 4:21 pm
SAN DIEGO, Oct. 04, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Turning Point Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: TPTX), a precision oncology company developing next-generation therapies that target genetic drivers of cancer, today announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted a seventh regulatory designation to lead drug candidate, repotrectinib.
Breakthrough Therapy designation was granted for the treatment of patients with advanced solid tumors that have an NTRK gene fusion who have progressed following treatment with one or two prior TRK tyrosine kinase inhibitors, with or without prior chemotherapy, and have no satisfactory alternative treatments. The company is planning to discuss next steps towards potential registration of repotrectinib in this patient population at a Type B meeting with the FDA anticipated in the first half of 2022.
We are excited to receive our second Breakthrough Therapy designation and seventh overall regulatory designation for repotrectinib, said Athena Countouriotis, M.D., president and chief executive officer. There remains an unmet medical need for NTRK-positive, TKI-pretreated advanced solid tumor patients where there are no targeted therapies currently approved. We look forward to presenting additional clinical data from our TRIDENT-1 study of repotrectinib during the AACR-NCI-EORTC conference later this week, including a late-breaker plenary presentation where early clinical data from the NTRK EXP-5 and EXP-6 cohorts will be discussed.
Breakthrough Therapy designation is granted by the FDA to expedite the development and regulatory review of an investigational medicine that is intended to treat a serious or life-threatening condition. The criteria for Breakthrough Therapy designation require preliminary clinical evidence that demonstrates the drug may have substantial improvement on at least one clinically significant endpoint over available therapy.
Repotrectinib was previously granted Breakthrough Therapy designation in ROS1- positive metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients who have not been treated with a ROS1 tyrosine kinase inhibitor, as well as four Fast-Track designations in: ROS1-positive advanced NSCLC patients who are ROS1 TKI nave; ROS1-positive advanced NSCLC patients who have been previously treated with one prior line of platinum-based chemotherapy and one prior ROS1 TKI; ROS1-positive advanced NSCLC patients pretreated with one prior ROS1 TKI without prior platinum-based chemotherapy; and NTRK-positive patients with advanced solid tumors who have progressed following treatment with at least one prior line of chemotherapy and one or two prior TRK TKIs and have no satisfactory alternative treatments. Repotrectinib was also granted an Orphan Drug designation in 2017.
Story continues
About Turning Point Therapeutics Inc.Turning Point Therapeutics is a clinical-stage precision oncology company with a pipeline of internally discovered investigational drugs designed to address key limitations of existing cancer therapies. The companys lead drug candidate, repotrectinib, is a next-generation kinase inhibitor targeting the ROS1 and TRK oncogenic drivers of non-small cell lung cancer and advanced solid tumors. Repotrectinib, which is being studied in a registrational Phase 2 study in adults and a Phase 1/2 study in pediatric patients, has shown antitumor activity and durable responses among kinase inhibitor treatment-nave and pre-treated patients. The companys pipeline of drug candidates also includes TPX-0022, targeting MET, CSF1R and SRC, which is being studied in a Phase 1 trial of patients with advanced or metastatic solid tumors harboring genetic alterations in MET; TPX-0046, targeting RET, which is being studied in a Phase 1/2 trial of patients with advanced or metastatic solid tumors harboring genetic alterations in RET; and TPX-0131, a next-generation ALK inhibitor, which is being studied in a Phase 1/2 trial of previously treated patients with ALK-positive advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer. Turning Points next-generation kinase inhibitors are designed to bind to their targets with greater precision and affinity than existing therapies, with a novel, compact structure that has demonstrated an ability to potentially overcome treatment resistance common with other kinase inhibitors. The company is driven to develop therapies that mark a turning point for patients in their cancer treatment. For more information, visit http://www.tptherapeutics.com.

Experts call for increased mental health funding – Chinadaily.com.cn – Chinadaily USA
Posted: at 4:21 pm
[Photo/IC]
Health experts have called for increasing investment in mental health services in China, as a recent study has revealed that only 0.5 percent of people suffering depressive disorders received adequate treatment.
It is estimated that 9.5 percent of individuals diagnosed with different degrees of depressive symptoms used mental health services, much lower than about 57.3 percent in the United States and other high-income countries, according to a study led by Chinese researchers and published on the online version of The Lancet Psychiatry on Sept 21.
An even lower 3.6 percent of patients sought treatment from psychiatric specialists. About 7 percent visited healthcare institutions or took psychotropic drugs, 0.3 percent enlisted help from social services, and 2.7 percent turned to traditional Chinese medicine or other alternative therapies, the study said.
The findings were based on a survey conducted on the Chinese mainland from 2013 to 2015 involving more than 32,500 people aged 18 or above.
Researchers from the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University, Peking University Sixth Hospital's Institute of Mental Health and several other institutions analyzed data from the survey and co-authored the paper.
"Our study showed that only a small percentage of people with a depressive disorder accessed treatment and very few received adequate treatment," it said.
Depressive disorders affect 6.9 percent of Chinese people over the course of their lives and 3.6 percent were affected in the previous 12 months, other studies have shown.
The new paper also offered a more detailed picture of the prevalence of mental illness in China, saying that depressive disorders were more prevalent in women than men, unemployed people than employed and people who were divorced, separated or widowed than those who were married or cohabiting.
These results have demonstrated the great challenges confronting frontline doctors and mental health service providers, Xu Xiufeng, head of the department of psychiatry at the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University in Yunnan province and a co-author of the study, said during a forum on September 26.
"We suggested increasing financial input to expand mental health services to underserved regions and areas with high-risk populations," she said. "It is also necessary to put forward specific outreach and treatment plans for vulnerable populations."
Wang Xiangdong, a researcher at Peking University Sixth Hospital's Institute of Mental Health who was not involved in the study, said it pointed to the shortage of mental health services.
Wang Yu, former director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that compared to healthcare services targeting other diseases, public use of mental health services is much less common. Wang was also not involved in the study.
He has called for long-term investment to boost mental health services, launching early intervention measures and nurturing more psychiatric specialists.
Wang said depressive disorders are the leading causes of disease burdens among all mental disorders, and the most effective medical intervention is to deliver drugs to patients properly and continuously.
"More studies are needed to enhance compliance of patients," he said, adding that it is vital to guarantee there is a sufficient number of psychiatric specialists to answer the demands of patients.

6 Healthy Alternatives to White Pasta – Everyday Health
Posted: at 4:21 pm
Pasta is hands down one of the quickest and easiest ways to get dinner on the table. You dont need to be a great chef to bring a pot of water to a boil and open a jar of sauce, but you may feel like one when the meal is a hit with the entire family, as crowd-pleasing comfort food usually is.
Pasta does have one disadvantage though: The vast majority of it is made from a refined grain, namely white flour. And according to research published in the February 2021 issue of the journalThe BMJ, eating a lot of refined carbohydrates, such as pasta, can increase your chances of heart disease and early death. Thats not something you want in your go-to weeknight dinner.
Pasta has a bad reputation when it comes to health, says Grace Derocha, RD, a spokesperson for the National Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. But not all pasta is created equal, she says. Today, youll find many alternative pastas on store shelves that arent made from refined grains. Often theyre made from the nutritional superstars most people need more of in their diets: beans, legumes, and whole grains. Unfortunately, misleading labels and hidden ingredients can make it tough to choose a product thats truly an upgrade over white pasta.

Fad dieters, especially those on low-carb or keto plans, often come to Derocha for help replacing pasta. People think a bean-based pasta, like a chickpea pasta, is low carb, says Derocha. But those people are mistaken. Multiple times a week, I remind people that legumes are a carb source. But unlike traditional pasta, many of these alternative pastas are packed with complex carbs that are higher in protein and packed with fiber. Carbs are nothing to fear! she says.
While most alternative pastas wont help you cut carbs, they can help you add important nutrients to your diet. Fiber is a very good reason to switch up your pasta routine, says Derocha. It can help cut your risk ofheart disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and breast cancer, according to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Unfortunately, 95 percent of Americans dont get enough fiber, according to an article published in the JanuaryFebruary 2017 issue of the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine. If you have pasta a couple of times a week, a high-fiber choice can make a big difference.
Fiber isnt the only reason to shop around in the pasta aisle. Many of these alt pastas contain more protein than standard white flour noodles. What you choose really depends on what you need to improve on, says Derocha. Mostly, its going to be fiber, but for some people, it will be protein thats more important.

Whatever kind of pasta you choose, its important to keep proper portions in mind. The serving size recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans is just a half-cup cooked, which is about 1 ounce (oz) dry. Its not hard to exceed that amount, especially in a pasta entre. In fact, many products provide nutritional information for double that amount, so be aware of how much youre actually eating.
For reference, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), 2 oz of dry white pasta (about 1 cup cooked) contains:
Compare these nutrition facts to those of the alternative pastas below to get an idea of which options you might want to add to your pantry.
This single-ingredient pasta is Derochas absolute favorite. It has a mild flavor thats pretty close to regular spaghetti. Its great with pesto, she says. Whether you are looking to increase protein or fiber, this choice has you covered. It blows white pasta out of the water on both counts (see nutritional details below).
The name of the product is slightly misleading. Soy spaghetti would be more appropriate; the noodles are 100 percent soybean flour. Edamame, on the other hand, are young soybeans that are typically eaten fresh, not dried.
Picky eaters may not be willing to go all-in on edamame pasta, especially not at first. I like to mix it with regular pasta, says Derocha. Thats good advice when it comes to any new pasta youre trying to get your family to accept.
Heres what youll find in 2 oz of Explore Cuisine edamame spaghetti:
Noodles made from rice are anything but alternative for many people. In Asian culture, we have a lot of different rice noodle dishes, says Derocha. Ill use a brown rice pasta when Im making an Asian noodle dish, but I wouldnt use it in a red sauce or an Italian-inspired dish.
If you cant eat gluten and you like the flavor and texture of brown rice pasta, it may be something you want to keep on hand. But if youre looking for fiber and protein, you may want to try a different type.
Considering how full of fiber brown rice as a whole food is, its surprising how few grams of fiber brown rice pasta contains, Derocha says. Nutritionally, its not an improvement over traditional white pasta.

Chickpea pasta is a divisive food. People seem to either love it or hate it, so youll need to try it for yourself to learn which camp you fall into. But be advised, if youre looking at the ubiquitous Banza brand, youll have to decode the label before making any decisions.
Look at the serving size. Youll see that it isnt the typical 2 oz portion. A dietitian did not write these labels, says Derocha. The company uses a 3.5 oz serving size, which can make it look more different than other pastas than it really is. (See below for how it compares at an equal serving size.)
For the best taste and texture, many fans recommend cooking chickpea pasta less time than the package directions state and rinsing it before serving. Derocha prefers chickpea pasta in chilled dishes, such as pasta salad. Especially for people who dont eat beans, which research shows are so beneficial to health, its worth it for them to try to find a way to enjoy a bean-based pasta, she says. Its a great plant-based protein.
Heres what youll find in 2 oz of Banza chickpea pasta:
Quinoa has a well-deserved reputation as a superfood. Its a good source of fiber, and it contains many other important nutrients as well, including magnesium, iron, B vitamins, and antioxidants, according tothe USDA.
Quinoa pasta isnt the same thing though. I havent seen one brand where quinoa is the top ingredient. The name is misleading, says Derocha. Typically, quinoa is the second or third ingredient, behind rice flour or corn flour or both. If you want to get extra protein or fiber into your diet, choose something else.

Lentil pasta has benefits that are similar to the aforementioned edamame and chickpea pastas. Youll get more protein and fiber than in traditional pasta. What you choose will be a matter of taste preferences.
This style of alternate pasta is definitely not Derochas favorite. I love lentils, but there are better options. I dont know what happens in the processing. It gets gummy, mushy, and I dont like it, she says. When it comes to alternative pastas, personal preferences are important. You are unlikely to eat pasta you dont like.
Heres what youll find in 2 oz of Barilla red lentil pasta:
People looking to add extra grams of protein without sacrificing the mild flavor and familiar texture of traditional pasta might reach for an added-protein version. These pastas are mostly semolina wheat flour (the refined white flour that gives classic pasta its signature taste and texture), with bean flours and pea protein added. Youll notice its fiber content isnt particularly impressive.
Sometimes if youre just in the beginning stages of trying new things to improve your diet, this can be a good step, says Derocha.

It can be a good idea to explore all of your pasta options, but you dont need to ditch your current favorite. Its important to remember that pasta, even traditional white flour pasta, is not evil. You just want to make sure you have it in the right portion size. Many of my clients are shocked when they see how little this is, says Derocha. Restaurant pasta servings often top 8 oz.
Thats where these alternate pastas can come in. You can go half-and-half with regular pasta and something with more fiber and protein, like edamame pasta. Or you can even do half white flour pasta and half zucchini noodles, she says. There are so many ways to enjoy the foods you love without overdoing it.

Anti-Vaccine Facebook Groups Have Been Imploring People to Stay Away from the ICU – Tech Times

Anti-vaccine Facebook groups are pushing for hazardous movements. They've been sending out messages to their followers instructing them to avoid emergency rooms and get their loved ones out of intensive care units.
The anti-vaxxers are consumed by conspiracy theories claiming that doctors are preventing patients who are unvaccinated from getting "miracle cures." Some even went as far as claiming that doctors kill unvaccinated patients on purpose.
People active in the anti-vaccine Facebook groups tell their followers with COVID-19 to avoid going to hospitals and instead try at-home treatments, which is very dangerous as they've not been scientifically proven.
According toNBC News, the messages in the groups show an escalation in the mistrust of medical professionals that began in the past few months on social media like Facebook, which have attempted to remove COVID-19 misinformation.
Meanwhile, doctors stated that hospitals are filled up because of the recent delta variant wave, according toVOX.

Wes Ely, an ICU doctor at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, said that they were down to four COVID-19 patients two months ago.
Since the surge, they've had 50 patients with COVID-19 on four ICU units, and 97% of them are not vaccinated. He added that the conspiracy theories circulating online are increasing the steam.
The concerns reflect numerous local reports about the increasing threats and violence directed toward medical professionals.
In Missouri, a medical center installed panic buttons on employee badges because of the increase in assaults.
Violence and threats against medical professionals have been reported in Texas, Georgia, Massachusetts, and Idaho.
While COVID-19 misinformation has been a problem since the pandemic's beginning, the introduction of vaccines has invigorated the anti-vaccine community. It sparked a new push to look for and promote alternative treatments, some of which are very dangerous.
Other anti-vaxxers are turning away from hospitals. In the past few weeks, some anti-vaccine Facebook groups and influencers on Telegram have offered their followers instructions on how to get their family members released from the hospital even if they are not cleared yet.
According to the instructions, people can insist that their loved one be transferred into hospice care. The anti-vaxxers have recorded those removed from hospitals for viral videos, which were then posted on the platforms.
Some people in the Facebook groups formed recently are promoting the false cure ivermectin, an anti-parasite medicine for horses, according toThe Washington Post.
The anti-vaccine groups claimed that removing COVID-19 patients from hospitals is important to"self-medicate" at home using ivermectin.
However, as the patients realize that the horse medicine is ineffective, the groups have begun recommending several other hazardous at-home treatments, like nebulizing and inhaling hydrogen peroxide, gargling with iodine, and more.
The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America had released a warning against the alternative medicine promoted online like nebulizing hydrogen peroxide.
With COVID-19 cases increasing among those who refuse to get the vaccine and disinformation about it continue to spread online, anti-vaxxers have given rise to what is called a "vigilante medicine."
The label was given because patients are not taking lifesaving care from medical professionals and would instead try alternative medicine posted on Facebook.
Anti-vaccine Facebook groups are now changing the namesof their pages to avoid detection as Facebook launched a campaign to shut down groups and pages run by anti-vaxxers.
