Veterans Cannabis Coalition and DAV Ch.12 Partner with Haven to Provide Cannabis to Vets – PRNewswire
Posted: November 13, 2021 at 11:00 am
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- On Saturday, November 13th, Haven partnered with Disabled American Veterans Ch. 12, Veterans Cannabis Coalition, and LA NORML to kick off a Veterans Compassion Network at their San Bernardino location.
They will be hosting their first-ever "Veteran Hour" from 8 am-10 am, allowing for participating members to come in during a dedicated time where they can provide them the attention and cannabis education the veteran community deserve. The members will also be awarded free doctors' recommendations in conjunction with Haze.
This compassion program utilizes California SB-34 cannabis donations to provide medical cannabis to veterans needing treatment. The compassion program will help address the growing crisis of suicide and overdose death amongst veterans while also delivering the necessary alternative medicine needed to tackle the issue of PTSD and chronic pain management.
Additionally, this Veteran Compassion Network is designed to provide cannabis education to its members and allow them access to the vast assortment of cannabis products that they may not have been able to use for treatment otherwise. Haven has always emphasized cannabis education and takes great pride in teaching all of its members and customers about the many benefits of cannabis.
"It was important for Haven to do something impactful for those who have served our great country on Veterans Day weekend," says Mike Cuccia. "The General Manager of our San Bernardino store, Nick, is a veteran himself and is a great representation of how cannabis and our veteran community are such a valuable partnership. We are ecstatic to be able to support our vets on a monthly basis moving forward and make sure that they have continued access to the cannabis education and products that they need."
While this is the first Veteran Hour and is being held in honor of Veteran's Day, Haven believes that our veterans deserve access to this type of program year-round and is committed to running this Compassion Program monthly to continue supporting our veterans and also increase its member count to allow for as many veterans to gain access to cannabis as possible.
The compassion program has turned cannabis donations into an art form.If you're looking for more education information or what strains best suit your needs, visit myhavenstores.com.

The New Concept of Mental and Physical Wellness – The Costa Rica News
Posted: at 11:00 am
It is well known that a problem cannot be conceived as such until the concepts to define and limit it have been created. That is why, among other things, our current conception of what well-being should be has been broadening to encompass aspects of human life that decades ago would have been unimportant or even neglected.
Today, however, we speak not only of the importance of meeting the basic needs of each one of us, but of a much broader realm of potential than the possibility of feeling good physically. This concept has been called wellness.
TIP: Get our latest content byjoining our newsletter. Don't miss out onnews that matterin Costa Rica. Click here.
Wellness is an idea that more and more therapists and psychologists are working with, but also organizations of hotels with spas and agencies that offer weekend experiences. What is wellness and why is it popular?
What we understand by wellness today is derived from the ideas of Halbert L. Dunn, an American statistician who is considered the father of the Wellness Movement. In the 1950s, Dunn developed the idea of wellness understanding that human well-being had to go beyond what until then was included in the field of health. Thus, this concept had to include, in addition to the proper functioning of the body, the ability to opt for various ways of self-realization.
In this way, the wellness that Halbert L. Dunn spoke of can be understood as the dynamics and lifestyle through which human potential is maximized in the physical, mental and spiritual spheres. As wellness theorizing includes the acceptance of the existence of a mental and spiritual world in addition to the physical, this concept is used especially in the circles of influence of alternative medicine and non-experimental psychology.
Since the 50s, and especially with the momentum that New Age culture took in the 70s, this idea of health has spread to spa centers, spas and wellness hotels, but also to travel programs and experiences that offer wellness weekends and long stays dedicated to improving the standard of living.
This new way of understanding well-being was not born in the middle of the 20th century by chance. There are reasons why today there are many wellness centers and a century ago this idea was not even raised. This is so because changes in social conditions have made it possible for the philosophy of wellness and integral health to spread.
It is curious that, although Western human societies have assumed for many centuries the existence of a separation between the body and the soul, all their efforts in the sense of improving the quality of life of people (that of the wealthy classes, in concrete) have focused only on the realm of the physical. The spiritual realm, which is understood as linked to the divine and therefore seems much more important than the simple carcass of flesh and bones, takes center stage in the practice of creating ideal living conditions.
Feeding the soul was something that was reserved for very small elites and their environment, even if there was always some philosopher who, even having problems to survive, would insist on answering these types of questions.
Of course, until not so long ago, it was difficult to try to respond to a repertoire of needs as difficult to define as those that correspond to the spiritual realm, and even less with the scarce resources and limited technologies that were available. How could the ancient Romans, for example, have been able to speak of wellness, who depended on the denial of the human character of their slaves to maintain themselves an acceptable standard of living and to use their services with total freedom?
Today, however, talking about wellness is already possible. And it is, among other things, because we already have the resources and the technology not to continue indefinitely postponing the fundamental question: what happens to the well-being of our mind?
It is not surprising, therefore, that this notion of what wellness is practically coincides with the appearance of the welfare state, shortly after the Second World War. Like the
The basic needs of more and more social strata were being met thanks to the redistribution of wealth, it was easier to extend the scope of all positive human values.
It is at this moment when freedom begins to be spoken more, the autonomy to be able to choose a lifestyle adapted to ones own way of being and doing things. It is also at this time that the idea begins to spread that well-being must address issues not addressed so far.
Many psychology professionals are beginning to focus their interventions on the need not only to treat mental problems, but also to help lead patients towards happiness and self-realization. The needs of the spirit, reformulated as needs of the mind, become some of the main objectives.
In this way all the ideas related to health and fitness have been imbued with the notion of wellness: from plans to lose fat, lose weight and maintain a flat stomach, to treatment plans for sick patients or to help carry out plans. healthy diet.
As always happens with the concepts that appeal to a spiritual world that works by different logics than the physical realm, wellness in its original definition is not something that is taken too much into account in scientific psychology or conventional medicine.
Research and intervention plans from these instances usually focus on the study of subjective experience and the placebo effect, but not on the consideration of areas of well-being detached from normal biological and physiological processes.
It is clear that weight loss plans could work better if the idea of wellness is internalized and accepted by patients, and that hotels can improve their economic results if they include a wellness center in their services, but that does not tell us much about an area of human needs separated from the rest of the areas of physical health. So while many spas, hotels, travel agencies, and alternative medicine organizations may find the idea of wellness helpful, it is not a universal truth.
Believing in wellness can open the doors to a new way of developing happiness and enjoying life, but not doing so does not turn us into people who are far from authentic well-being.

Natural therapies boost well-being – Cayman Compass
Posted: November 1, 2021 at 6:42 am
Alternative therapies are becoming increasingly popular for addressing a range of health and wellness issues.
Its a fast-growing field as people seek additional options to boost well-being and treat a range of conditions.
Today, more hospitals and clinics are integrating complementary and alternative medicine known as CAM, the term for natural products and practices.
CAM works in conjunction or together with conventional medicine, says Dr. Irka Ebanks, herbal medicine practitioner and medical doctor at the Health Services Authoritys recently opened complementary and alternative medicine clinic in Cayman.
It takes a very holistic approach towards healing by supporting the bodys own natural effort in achieving a balanced state of positive energy and optimum physical health, she says.
CAM practitioners consider health to be an alliance between physical, social and mental well-being. A few examples of common CAM practices are acupuncture, aromatherapy, herbal medicine, chiropractic therapies, massage, yoga and meditation.
CAM therapies can help with a range of conditions such as colds, post-viral fatigue, stressand anxiety, muscle, back and joint pain, sleep issues, headaches and migraines, digestive health, hypertension, autoimmune disorders and weight concerns.
CAM may also encourage the use of naturopathic medicine, which embraces the idea that one should not only attack symptoms of illness but attack it at its root cause, says Dr. Ebanks. These may be influenced by such factors as poor diet, lack of sleep or mental health struggles that can negatively impact a persons overall health.
The HSA clinic, located at its new specialist clinic in the Smith Road Centre, includes an herbal medicine dispensary headed by pharmacist Rosemarie Bailey. While Caymanians have long used herbal remedies and natural products to treat a variety of ailments, Dr. Ebanks notes they should be treated with caution.
They are medicines persons should be aware that there are possible interactions with pharmaceutical medications, supplements and other herbs, therefore should only be administered under the care of a physician, she says.

Breast cancer: Experimental, integrative medicine and alternative medicine therapies – The Times of India Blog
Posted: at 6:37 am
In India, out of two women with breast cancer one will die within five years. Many of these lives can be saved by early detection of cancer. If cancer is detected at stage 1 when it is local within the breast, the five-year survival rate is 99%. If it is detected at stage 3 or 4 when it has spread to other body parts and organs, the five-year survival rate falls to 22%. In India, most cases are detected at stage 3 or 4.
Cancer is endogenous, part of the process that creates and ends life. Therefore, it can be neither prevented nor cured. But early detection can increase life expectancy and improve the post-cancer quality of life. For cancer, the saying is not prevention is the cure, but early detection is the cure.
By 2030 India will have 200,000 cases of breast cancer and 100,000 deaths. Twenty-five years ago, about 30% patients were below age fifty. Now, about 50% are. And 5% of cases are in women under 40.
Experimental and Integrative medicine therapies give better treatment and improve the post-cancer quality of life. Alternative therapies are a misnomer. Because medical treatment has no alternatives. Dietary and herbal supplements can be harmful. Let us look at all of these.
Experimental Cancer Treatments
A. Gene Therapy:In gene therapy, a nucleic acid-based drug is delivered to either correct or destroy the genetic aberration (cancer) cells. Its advantages are:
*It targets tumour cells and does not affect normal cells.*It corrects molecular defects and thus retards the cancer progression.*It has little toxicity compared to other therapies.*It is effective to a particularly stubborn type of breast cancer cells and causes them to self-destruct.*It lowers chance of recurrence of the cancer.*It helps increase the effectiveness of some types of chemotherapy.*It is also used to deliver RNA interference technologies, or cancer DNA vaccines.
It is likely to become a popular therapy for breast and other cancers but at present does not have approved products for breast cancer.
B. Focused Ultrasound Therapy:High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a novel technology which is being investigated. HIFU focuses a pressure wave with a high frequency on a small target volume. It causes an increase in local temperature which induces coagulative necrosis (death) and protein denaturation (disruption of structure) of the target cancer cell within a few seconds. It is used to treat both benign and malignant tumours. Its advantages are:
*It is an early-stage non-invasive therapeutic technology and therefore has less risk for infection and blood clots and has potential for shorter recovery time.*It can be targeted precisely and thus minimizes damage to non-targeted healthy tissue.*It has no ionizing radiation and thus can be used repeatedly.*It can be used alone, or as a complement to drug therapy enabling enhanced delivery of chemotherapy or immunotherapy to tumours.*It may induce an anti-tumour immune response.*It can improve the quality of life and decrease the cost of care for patients.
Integrative Medicine
Integrative medicine is a combination of medical treatment and complementary therapies. The latter do not treat cancer but can help cope with signs and symptoms such as anxiety, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, pain, difficulty sleeping, and stress caused by cancer and cancer treatments.
A. Complementary Therapies
Types of complementary therapies that can improve well-being include Hypnosis, Massage, Meditation, Relaxation techniques, Exercise, Yoga, Acupuncture, Aromatherapy, Hypnosis, Music therapy, Tai chi, Chiropractic therapy, Reflexology, Reiki, Therapeutic touch, Biofeedback, Imagery (Imagining scenes, pictures, or experiences), Creative outlets (art, music, or dance).
It also includes Vitamins and dietary supplements, Botanicals, which are plants or parts of plants (e.g., cannabis), herbs and spices such as turmeric or cinnamon, and special foods or diets.
Most of the complementary therapies are safe and effective.
B. Helpful Supplements
Clinical trials show that some herbs and nutritional supplements help to manage specific side effects of cancer treatment. For example, American ginseng and Astragalus root used in traditional Chinese medicine may help reduce some side effects of chemotherapy, such as fatigue. Nutritional supplements like glutamine, vitamin B6, vitamin E, and omega-3 may help treat peripheral neuropathy. However, these supplements are not appropriate for everyone, and more research is needed to confirm their safety and effectiveness.
C. Alternative therapies
Alternative therapies are sometimes suggested as an alternative to medical treatment. These therapies claim that cancer can be treated by taking certain herbs or supplements, or food, and avoiding certain food. But these therapies are disproved or unproved. They do not treat cancer and are often harmful. Because they do not stop the growth of cancer. It may therefore worsen and thus reduce the treatment options because of the severity of the cancer.
The claim that these therapies are natural and therefore safe is false. Natural is not necessarily safe. Poisonous mushrooms are natural but not safe. Herbal supplements may be harmful when taken by themselves, with other substances, or in large doses. For example, kava kava, an herb used to help with stress and anxiety, may cause liver damage. And St. John, used for depression, may cause certain cancer drugs to not work as well as they should.
D. Dietary Supplements
People take dietary or herbal products to improve health, to get additional nutrition, to boost the immune system, or to treat side effects. Dietary products are vitamin and mineral products. Herbal, botanical, and other natural products may contain plants or parts of plants, algae, or fungi, or extracts from animals, such as toad or snake venom.
Not all supplements are safe or effective, especially during cancer treatment. For example, supplements like garlic, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, and Vitamin E can increase risk for bleeding. This could be dangerous for patients undergoing or recovering from surgery. Supplements can also interfere with prescription and over-the-counter medications. They may also be unsafe in specific health problems, including high blood pressure, diabetes, mental health conditions, heart disease, or blood clotting problems.
E. Side effects of supplements
*Supplements can cause serious side effects including:*High blood pressure*Nausea*Diarrhea*Constipation*Fainting*Headaches*Seizures*Heart attack*Stroke
Summary
*Dietary or herbal product do not treat cancer.*Herbs may interact with chemotherapy and other drug treatments.*Antioxidant supplements may make cancer treatments less effective.
Complementary and Alternative cancer therapies do not treat cancer. But they may lessen signs and symptoms such as anxiety, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, pain, difficulty sleeping, and stress caused by cancer and cancer treatments. Hypnosis, massage, meditation, relaxation techniques, yoga, acupuncture, aromatherapy, music therapy, and Tai chi alone or in combination may be beneficial.
But many alternative cancer treatments are disproved or unproved, and some may even be dangerous.
Cancer Treatment in other Systems of Medicine
Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Yoga, Naturopathy, Homoeopathy, Chinese Medicine also have cancer treatment. But these are not proven. Though some of these might help cope with the side effects of cancer and cancer treatment.
Conclusion
The only person who can save you is you Sheryl Crow
Cancer is a 3200-year-old disease. It is endogenous, a part of life-process. So, it can neither be eradicated, nor prevented, nor cured. Yet.
Late detection of cancer is fatal. The causes for late detection are many but lack of awareness is the principal cause. Other main causes are patient being shy, social stigma and doctors ignorance because of which the treatment is delayed. An awareness program will address all these issues.
If you loved your life before cancer, do not be afraid of life after cancer. You will find beauty again. I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night. Galileo.
Will some radical discovery in the future make cancer prevention and cure possible? We do not know. But we can always hope.
Because as Richard Causer, Director, NCI, USA, says about the future of cancer cure, There are far more good historians than there are prophets.
Views expressed above are the author's own.

MidMichigan Health: Alternative treatments for osteoarthritis – Midland Daily News
Posted: at 6:37 am
Osteoarthritis is very common in fact, most of us will experience it in some form at some point in our lives. It can range in severity and can affect any joint in your body, including your hips, knees and shoulders.
Q. What is osteoarthritis?
A. Osteoarthritis is a term that is traditionally called "wear and tear" arthritis, and is a degenerative process of the hyaline cartilage in the joints. What that means is as one ages, the joints are breaking down, which can cause pain when one is trying to get around.
Q. How common is osteoarthritis?
A. Most of us will experience some wear and tear on our joints, especially as we get older. There are different risk factors for osteoarthritis, ranging from genetics to obesity to prior injury or surgery on a joint or area. Overall, though, osteoarthritis is very common, mostly in knees, hips and shoulders, although it can affect any joint in your body.
Q. What are some treatment methods for osteoarthritis?
A. Because its so common and it's difficult to prevent or completely solve, we use a multi-modal approach for treatment of osteoarthritis. We use anti-inflammatory medicine, like ibuprofen. There are some natural anti-inflammatories that we recommend, such as turmeric, avocado and soy.
We also do injections, both with steroids and viscosupplementation, which means we lubricate the joints, as well as bracing and physical therapy. After youve exhausted all of those options, you are likely to be referred to an orthopedic surgeon to discuss replacement surgery.
Q. What is a platelet-rich plasma injection?
A. This is an injection where we actually use your own blood plasma to signal to the body that an area is damaged and that it needs to be healed. Its a fairly new procedure, but one point to emphasize is that this injection does not regenerate your cartilage. Its an indicator to your body and helps to try and speed up the healing process. We have seen great results with it, and are starting to use it in muscles, tendons and even joints to help provide relief for patients.
Q. Do natural anti-inflammatories, like turmeric, really work?
A. My goal is to look at the evidence behind these natural products and see whats been shown to actually be effective. Turmeric has been shown to be effective as a natural anti-inflammatory. If you take it twice a day, however, it may cause an upset stomach. Avocado, soy and other types of topical lotions have also been shown to be natural anti-inflammatories.
A.J. Pinney, D.O., is a family medicine physician with specialized fellowship training in non-surgical sports medicine at MidMichigan Health.

Health Fusion: Minnesota teacher unlocks health benefits of Shiatsu – Jamestown Sun

ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Before I delve into the healing power of the human hand, I want to give a shout out to my dad. I always thought that he, a pediatrician in a small Pennsylvania town, was way ahead of his time. He embraced aspects of complementary and alternative medicine at a time when many of his colleagues didn't pay much attention to it. He took an acupuncture course as an elective in medical school and heard about people who benefitted from the practice. The theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine intrigued him. So if one of his patient's parents wanted to give their sick child a massage to ease stress, he encouraged it -- as long as it was safe.
His interest sparked mine, and I've done a bunch of stories about integrative medicine. In case you're not quite sure what that means, integrative medicine is a way of incorporating western medical practices with alternative therapies to treat the whole patient. An example could be cancer treatment that includes both state-of-the-art medical and surgical treatments combined with massage therapy or meditation. Integrated medicine addresses body and soul.
Shiatsu is a complementary technique about which I've always been interested. Recently, I had the opportunity to interview a Minnesota expert.
Rochester resident Naoko Vold learned Shiatsu in Japan and has been practicing the ancient technique since 1968.
"Shiatsu is my passion," Vold says. "It is a way to help people relieve tension and increase energy within 10 to 15 minutes. That's the power of Shiatsu."
Vold explains that Shiatsu is a type of massage during which she uses her fingers to press on sensitive points on the body (called tsubo in Japanese). By applying steady and slowly increasing pressure to these spots, Vold says Shiatsu practitioners help to balance the body's flow of energy. The result is reduced tension and increased energy.
"This is the mystery of Shiatsu," Vold says with a smile that warmed the entire room, which was impressive because I interviewed her over Zoom. "It awakens nerve pathways and people feel better quickly."
It seems that modern medicine is still trying to figure out the mystery behind Shiatsu and related therapies. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes on their website that interest in integrated medical techniques is on the rise. And a quick online search reveals many scholarly articles researching how Shiatsu may help ease pain, lessen anxiety and boost energy. Vold compares how some of her clients feel after a 10-minute session to what you might experience on a much-needed vacation.
"It's similar to the feeling of relief and release you might get when you first step into a beautiful hotel room and you look out the window and see the ocean or a snow-capped mountain," Vold says. "Your whole being goes, 'ah.'"
Vold says Shiatsu massage is most effective when done regularly. So she teaches her clients how to do the massage at home.
"The hand is the oldest healing tools," Vold says. "It's like medicine. The human hand has heat. touch and energy."
