Change is coming and there is hope for Main South

I am responding to Ray Mariano's column, "This is not your father's Main South." It is transforming. Having grown up in Main South during the 50s and 60s I have to agree with Mr. Mariano but to a different degree; during those years, Main South was a safe and family-orientated neighborhood, people respected and cared about each other; three-deckers were owned and occupied by families (sometimes a relative on each floor,) kids were watched over not only by their parents but our neighbors. We were ableto play safely outside until dark, walk safely outside even after dark without the fear of being attacked or shot. Schools were a safe haven (Woodland Street, South High and St. Peter's.) Although we were not always fond of all of our teachers, we had respect for them along with our coaches and our parents. Then came the 70s and 80s. Many of the owners of the three-deckers in Main South passed away and their children moved away. Houses were sold to slum landlords and that along with the formation of gangs and drug activity became the beginning of the downfall of Main South. Yes, Mr.Mariano, we have seen a place were no one wanted to live, butnow, as you have stated, change is coming and there is hope that in the next few years we will see a transformation in Main South and it again may look like my father's Main South.

Democracy needs to be decided by the people.Which is why the Senate needs to pass the Freedom to Vote Act. This act makes it more possible for every voice to be heard. Democracy should not be decided by hokey map manipulation, or by who has the money to sway politicians. I urge anyone who would like to see our country come back together, to agree that the Right to Vote is the most necessary and absolute item for our democracy. Democrat or Republican all our voices matter. Please urge our congressional leaders to pass the Freedom to Vote act.
