Independence Movement? Increasingly, during protest events in Hong Kong, people have been waving the former colonial flag. They have also been talking about the need for Hong Kong to be independent. Both actions have infuriated pro-Beijibng individuals and even some Chinese officials, with Chen Xuo-er suggesting these should be a crackdown and Lu Ping describing those advocating independence as "morons". Other pro-Beijing forces say the "movement" is not a serious one, and the protesters themselves say the key issue is freedom of speech, which is currently being eroded. While there, he said that people had no need to wave colonial flags in protests, but when questioned about former Secretary for Justice Elsie Leung criticising the Hong Kong legal system said he would not criticise anyone #39;s right to free speech. Some legislators were also keen to ask him about the controversy surrounding Executive Councillor Franklin Lam, who sold two residential properties just a short while before government measures to dampen the property market came into play.
