Dr Phil Davies knows that he seems a bit whacky when he points a laser at Mars from the back garden of his Hampshire home.

The doctor, who has made headlines for claiming he owns the Red Planet, takes the jokes and funny looks in his stride.

Because he, along with 150,000 others, are on a mission for world peace - to protect mankind from what he says is a real threat of nuclear weapons dangling above our heads.

About ten years ago, the 55-year-old started shining a powerful laser through space to liberate carbon dioxide on the alien planet 91 million kilometres away.

In doing so, he says he is creating an atmosphere, and, under current space law, is entitled to stake a claim at being the rightful owner of the martian territory.

Dr Davies says he is making it ready for sustained use, and in a court, his claim would stand up to scrutiny.

UN regulations state that to own part of a planet you have to show you have made it ready for sustained use.

But for the space-loving GP, it isnt about being the first man on Mars. Its about beating the worlds superpowers in a game of chess.

It is all about the Outer Space Treaty, he told The Daily Star. Thats the only law that stops aggressive weapons in orbit above earth.

By creating a legal claim that he owns the extraterrestrial wasteland, Dr Davies is hoping to sting the UN into updating its space laws to stop nasty countries from weaponising space in a bid to mine unexplored planets.

He said: The Outer Space Treaty has kept us safe for all these years, weapons you have been up there otherwise. The trouble is it has blocked everyone, especially the Americans, from space mining.

My understanding was that for any nation, the desire of greed is higher than the desire for peace. If we could stir that up and show we're going to be difficult to deal with, that were in danger of us getting the legal rights, theyll have to update the law in that direction."

The 1967 Outer Space Treaty was signed during the cold war to prevent a nuclear weapons being sent into space.

Dr Davies is concerned that the old treaty is outdated, and that the private sector wants to abolish it to make it easier to mine and explore space.

With that, the doctor argues, comes the very real risk of nuclear weapons being suspended 350 km above our heads.

Along with 150,000 members worldwide, Dr Davies fears there could be an catastrophic arms race in space sooner rather than later.

He said: If we can update the Space Treaty to accommodate what the Americans and ultimately what others want, then it stays strong and allows them to do their business.

"It doesnt allow for nukes up there. If we put them up there it is only to threaten us, not aliens. Space is much closer than what we think.

That could happen certainly in the next decade, maybe even next year. There will be at trickle, teasing the boundaries of the Space Treaty.

I dont think there is anyone nasty nation that could do that, but when there is only one law that stops us from putting weapons in space, at anyone time there is going to be a nation we are worried about. Most recently it was North Korea, and with Trump we were worried about the American administration.

No one is mature enough to handle nukes in space. The danger isnt necessarily coming from Russia - but threats could come from anywhere. America, China, or North Korea could go too far. Once you do that you change everything.

The former RAF doc's Mars for Sale group wants the UN to ratify their claim and update the treaty - and says by improving the atmosphere and having a pan-multinational membership, he has a legally credible claim to being one of the planets 150,000 owners.

His laser is, he admits, doing very very little in the grand scheme of things - but it gets him in the door.

And the science is, in theory, supported by Elon Musk, who has himself proposed dropping bombs on Mars to release the trapped CO2.

Ultimately, for Dr Davies, he is shining a laser at the UNs outdated laws, rather than Mars.

But when the time comes, he believes he will be first in line to own the Red Planet - along with the thousands of others he has sold alien land too through his group.

He said: There are no other celestial land claims filed with the UN. We can prove ours is. We have a response acknowledging us.

In the future, even if we arent able to deliver what we want right now, one day it will be feasibly possible for humans to go to Mars and set up factories or who knows.

But the fact is, as soon as that is realistic, up will pop our claim. It will have been filed. As long as somebody is alive, then itll have to be dealt with.
