Former Cedar Cliff CF Julian Bury off to good start in Futures League … – The Sentinel

BROCKTON, Massachusetts Julian Bury is ready to continue his strong 2017 campaign.

The Cedar Cliff alumnus, a rising sophomore and political science major Columbia University, made a major impact on his college baseball team this past spring, hitting .333 with 14 doubles in 37 games for the Lions. And this summer, he is back at it again, manning the outfield for the Seacoast Mavericks (based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire) of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League.

Its cool, Bury said of playing in the Futures League. Its a great experience. We get to go to a lot of cool places. Obviously, Marthas Vineyard is nice. The people in the area really love baseball and thats really cool to be around.

Bury said it was his coaches at Columbia that got him in with the Futures League. He also said usually, the coaches look to leagues across the country and try to find leagues that fit their players needs best.

When his coaches at school let him know about the opportunity to play in the Futures League, Bury told them he was ready for the opportunity.

Obviously, you hope to gain friends and gain experience, he said. But you also want to face good pitching and face kids from schools you didnt get an opportunity to see in the spring at Columbia. Itll be cool to face some new arms and new kids.

Bury, who has four hits and four RBI in his first 12 at-bats with the Mavericks, said his personal goal this summer is to add bulk. Listed at 6 feet tall and 165 pounds, he said he wants to gain weight in order to add power to his game.

While he was a leadoff hitter at Columbia and in both his junior and senior years at Cedar Cliff, Bury, who was named All-Sentinel Second Team in 2016, has hit third in the first few games of for the Mavericks.

It was different, he said. But its definitely fun.

In addition to giving Bury a unique opportunity to try out a different spot in the lineup, his summer ball tenure is also giving him a chance to increase his experience at multiple outfield spots. A natural center fielder, Bury is on a team where most of his teammates were right fielders for their college teams in the spring. Because of that, the team is trying their outfielders at different spots so they can put out the best lineups possible on a daily basis.

Around this time a year ago, Bury was still playing baseball at Cedar Cliff he hit .354 is his final three seasons with the Colts, with 51 runs scored, 34 RBIs and 38 stolen bases but it did not take him long to become an impact college baseball player.

It was the preparation, he said of why he has been able to excel playing Division 1 baseball at a young age. Ever since I was in high school, I worked hard to be the best I could be so by the time I hit college, I was just ready. I was ready to play.

Despite his strong academic track record and early collegiate success, Bury admits he was not heavily recruited by Division 1 programs in high school. But when he had the opportunity to go to an Ivy League School (Columbia), Bury said he knew it was an ideal fit.

They were the one school that showed a lot of interest in me and had the initiative to come out and get me, he said of Columbia. And its great. I really like the city of New York a lot.
