Britain’s fisheries on the table today as Brexit deal talks resume – EU Today

British and EU negotiators will sit down for the penultimate scheduled round of online trade talks on Monday with little progress made to date as the June deadline to agree on any extension of negotiations looms.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has repeatedly refused to agree to the prolongation of the current transition period beyond the end of the year that the European partners are asking for in order to allow more time for the two sides to agree the scale and scope of their new relationship.

This week's round of talks will cover, amongst other sticking points, the crucial and highly contentious matter of continued EU access to the UK's fishing waters which remain, even in their current highly depleted state, the richest of Europe's fishing grounds.

The EU is also seeking comprehensive deals on security and the so-called level playing field guarantees of fair competition. London wants a narrower trade agreement with the bloc from 2021.

The next round of talks is planned for the week of June 1st.
