The Ascension Episcopal Lady Blue Gators were hoping to go back-to-back as the Division IV swimming state champions.

They fell just short of that, finishingas the state runner-up, and Ashley Gill, arguably the Lady Gators' top performer this year, was a key reason for the team's success.

Gill was the state champion in the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke and was a member of the Lady Blue Gators' 200 medley and 400 freestylerelay teams that won state titles as well.

"It is an amazing feeling to be a state champion," said Gill, who was named Swimmer of the Meet. "It makes the 15-plus hours a week of practice that I put in worth it."

In addition to winning the four state championships, Gill also added a record-breaking performance to her resume.

Gill set a new Division IV state record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.60. The record of 57.03 had previously been held by Calvary Baptist's Sarah Holt in 2018.

"When I broke the state record, my first reaction was to cry," Gill said. "The record has been a goal of mine to break. It was a very shocking moment for me, but I knew I was close to this record."

Gill has lived in six different states in her lifetime. Gill has lived in Virginia, where she was born, Kansas, Missouri, Ohio, Utah and Louisiana.
