Andrew Bolt Silenced by Racial-Discrimination Laws "Terrible Day for Free Speech"
"What more defenders of free speech need to point out is that even just laws come at a cost: that the mere process of establishing guilt or innocence can be the punishment. Journalists are increasingly being bombarded with ideologically-driven lawfare to the point that even were they always innocent, it would be cheaper, less stressful and less dangerous to their career if they said nothing or just wrote about fluffy kittens instead. As a practitioner in the industry, I know intimately this danger, the decisions it drives journalists to make, the articles that don #39;t get published, and the debates that then get quashed. Just look at this blog. Fear of lawfare from the Left forced us to increase moderation of comments, and when the financial squeeze came we could afford neither full-time moderation nor the risk of publication. Look at the result: a tiny fraction of readers #39; comments published last weekend. Relatively few yesterday. A withering of debate and a stifling of the right of reply. A small example, but indicative of the wider threat, I doubt a single person on that new media panel would have an insight into any of this. I would suspect their instinct would be for more regulation, not less, thus stifling free speech - always ruder than the alternative - even more. Dark days. Labor should be ashamed of itself.
