MP Liam Fox is perpetuating the American Right's myth that there is a War on Christmas being waged by the nefarious "multi-culturalists" under the guise of "political correctness".

But why do some, invariably on the Tory/UKIP border, appear to consider being politically incorrect a badge of honour and, therefore, tacitly endorse the ideas behind the language?

To my mind, the company of people who try to avoid insulting or offending others, however clumsily attempted, is preferable to those who delight in doing so.

I feel nothing for Dr Fox's faux persecution. To my knowledge, nobody has spat at him in the street (for his religious beliefs) unlike the 17 year old Muslim girl earlier in the year. Over-zealousness is always ugly but political correctness is not the quasi-totalitarian evil Dr Fox is making it out to be.

His defiance against the imaginary enemy of a non-endangered cause is unimpressive.
