Phoenix police investigators arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with the 2013 sexual assault of an 89-year-old woman after DNA evidence linked the man to the crime scene, according to a Phoenix police spokesman.

Angel Flores was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of sexual assault, kidnapping and burglary, according to jail records.

Phoenix investigators initially said they had little evidence to go on after the elderly woman was sexually assaulted at about 5:30 a.m. on April 13, 2013, in her home near 59th Avenue and Thomas Road.

After hearing a knock early in the morning, the woman opened her door to a forceful man immediately sexual assaulting her, authorities said.

Flores reportedly convinced the woman to open the door by saying he was a neighbor, officials said.

Flores denied involvement in the crime, knowing the woman or ever being in her home, but investigators said the DNA evidence confirmed he was there.

The woman called the police after Flores left her house, according to a police report. She was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries and received a forensic examination so DNA evidence could be collected.

Flores had previously had a DNA sample taken and was identified through a match to the DNA evidence collected from the scene.
