A manhunt is underway following a sickening hit and run incident which left a man with serious injuries after being deliberately reversed over.

The 19-year-old was left unconscious and bleeding on Appleby Street in Wellard, south of Perth in Western Australia, after being struck Friday about 11.40pm.

Police are searching for the driver of a Toyota Camry which was shown in security footage obtained by Nine News dragging the teen along for several metres and causing him to fall and hit his head on the road.

Sickening footage then shows the car reverse back over his body, creating a sound loud enough to alert residents in the area.

Locals rushed to help the teen before emergency crews could arrive, with the driver returning while the teen laid seriously injured on the bitumen.

Bystanders told Nine News the wanted man accused the injured teenager of stealing some sort of chain before fleeing the scene again.

He accused the person of stealing something. Why would you run someone over for a chain? one said.

Police said the victim and the driver, who left the scene without providing assistance, were believed to be known to each other.

St John Ambulance personnel attended and transferred the teenager to Royal Perth Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

Anyone with information regarding this incident, who recognises the vehicle involved or who saw the vehicle before or after the incident has been asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report the information online at http://www.crimestopperswa.com.au.
