A driver got the fright of his life early on Sunday morning when a sink hole swallowed his Toyota Camry as he sat inside.

South Australian police were called to St Andrews Crescent in Novar Gardens, a suburb in southwest Adelaide, at 2.15am following reports a car was sinking.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the Toyota Camry half submerged in a large hole and the street flooded with water and dirt.

The street was closed and the police called SA Water for help.

Images of the car submerged in the sink hole were later shared by police on Facebook.

The 21-year-old driver was not injured and his car was towed from the scene, officers said.

St Andrews Crescent was closed while SA Water visited the scene.

More than 30 homes were without water while repairs were being made, according to the Adelaide Advocate.

Our community support team is providing them with an interim supply of drinking water, a spokeswoman from SA Water told The Advocate.

We apologise for the inconvenience, and reassure people we are working as quickly and safely as possible to complete repairs.

It is not clear whether the road has been reopened.
