John Moores (who has a university named after him) was founder of Littlewoods and was instrumental in the emergence of the Football Pools. The first office for the Football Pools was set up in Liverpool, but the coupons were first distributed outside Old Trafford in 1923. It was many years before it really took off but before the National Lottery started up, many households would spend Saturdays afternoons watching theTVat full-time to check the Pools results to see if they had won big.

Liverpool has been integral in the development of the gambling industry throughout history, and is sure to be just as important in the future.
