Top NATO general has had ‘zero conversations’ with US allies about increasing military aid to Ukraine – Washington Examiner

The top commander of western forces in Europe has not discussed the military contributions of allies to Ukraine, the four-star American general told reporters today at the Pentagon.

I havent had any conversations with any of my peers from an alliance standpoint about funds or activities on behalf of the U.S. and Ukraine. Zero conversations, said Gen. Tod Wolters, the supreme commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Wolters' comments come in the wake of repeated claims from President Trump that one reason he held up nearly $400 million in military assistance to Ukraine over the summer is because other countries arent doing their share.

I don't like to be the sucker, and European countries are helped far more than we are, and those countries should pay more to help Ukraine, Trump said during his most recent press conference with the Finnish president.

But Wolters said he himself has not discussed the issue with western allies.

Asked directly if he were aware of any discussions in which other European countries had been asked to step up their level of assistance, Wolters said, Im not.

Wolters answer raises questions about whether Trumps concern about other nations paying up before the United States releases more aid was ever communicated to countries like Germany and France, two NATO allies that Trump singled out for criticism.

At the United Nations last week Trump said hes still waiting for allies to do more.

Id withhold again and Ill continue to withhold, until such time as Europe and other nations contribute to Ukraine, he said.
