The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, the state's renewable energy development agency, has completed the first of three years of aerial surveys of coastline bird and marine life in preparation for developing offshore wind projects.

The state hopes to have as much as 2.4 gigawatts of offshore wind power built as it seeks to get half of its electricity production from renewable sources by 2030.

The animal study is being done by Normandeau Associates and APEM and is one of 20 studies undertaken by NYSERDA to measure the impacts of offshore wind projects.
