DNA evidence leads to charges in 1991 sex assault of girl: Toronto police

TORONTO, Ont. DNA evidence from two decades ago from a sexual assault case involving a nine-year-old girl has led to an arrest being made.

It is alleged that on Sunday February 3, 1991, a nine-year-old girl and her five-year-old sister were playing in the lobby of their apartment building in the Warden Avenue and Danforth Road area.

It is believed that a man approached the two asking for help finding a place to eat when a short time later the man dropped the five-year-old child off at a store alone on Victoria Park Avenue.

Then man proceeded to drive the nine-year-old child to a secluded area and sexually assaulted her before dropping her off at a restaurant on Danforth Road.

The sexual assault was reported to police at the time and despite the investigative efforts, the was was unsolved.

The forensic DNA evidence collected at the time of the incident led police investigators to identify the suspect as 45-year-old Shane Daniel Garry of Brampton.

On Thursday, May 23, Garry was arrested in Brampton and charged with two counts of kidnapping, two counts of forcible confinement, sexual assault and sexual interference.

Police say they believe there may be other victims and are asking anyone with information to contact investigators or Crime Stoppers.
