A CBD company that falsely claimed to be based in Kelowna, among other lies, is reportedly under investigation, and it's been suspended from selling its products.

In an email sent to its customers Monday, Okanagan CBD admitted to being unlicensed, falsely advertising its products and lying about being based in the Okanagan.

We currently make and ship all of our products out of a home office/kitchen in Calgary, Alberta, Okanagan CBD said in its email.

We understand we have been lying to our customers about this. But in terms of the law its important you understand we are in fact based in Calgary and do not have any offices or operate in Kelowna. We have lied about where we operate so we were able to market ourselves 'Okanagan CBD,' as that helped rank us higher on Google pages, which in turn produced more sells (sic) for us.

The company says it's undergoing an official local investigation, but it's not clear what agency is investigating them. Health Canada says it is not investigating the company. Castanet has reached out to Okanagan CBD about the investigation, but the company did not respond by publication time.

While this investigation is going on we will be forced to close our doors until everything is thoroughly investigated, Okanagan CBD said in its email.

We are not only being suspended from selling CBD products online and in stores for one year, but we will also have to be a fully licensed CBD company before we can sell CBD products again. We are hoping to be fully licensed and back up and running in October of 2022.

The company says it currently doesn't hold any licence to sell, manufacture, produce or market CBD.

We previously wanted to get our license, however it is very expensive and we have not been able to, Okanagan CBD says.

CBD, or Cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive compound that comes from the cannabis plant. It's used for a variety of purposes, including pain, anxiety and stress relief.

On its website, Okanagan CBD advertises a number of CBD products made from 100% Organic North American-Grown Hemp. But the company now says it's been sourcing its CBD from China and other countries.

We realized we have been lying about our farming practices and where our CBD is grown and manufactured, the company says. We hope in the future you can forgive us and continue to work with us once this investigation is resolved.

The company also admits to lying about selling Broad Spectrum CBD Oil.

We wanted to sell Broad Spectrum products but we were not able to produce them. Unfortunately, all of our packaging was already made so instead of wasting money and throwing out our packaging, we used it and we were forced to lie to our customers.

Despite coming clean about its suspect business practices in its email to customers, the Okanagan CBD's website remains active and accepting orders as of Wednesday.
