Republicans Rally Behind Trump After Conviction, Times/Siena Poll Finds – The New York Times
Posted: at 1:58 am
President Biden continues to confront deeper doubts among Democrats than former President Donald J. Trump faces among Republicans even after Mr. Trump was convicted of 34 felony charges last month, according to a new poll by The New York Times and Siena College.
The national survey on the eve of the first presidential debate shows that voters have broad distaste for both candidates but that Mr. Trump has so far better consolidated the support of his own party. Only 72 percent of voters who said they cast a ballot for Mr. Biden four years ago say they approve of the job he is doing as president. And voters overall say they now trust Mr. Trump more on the issues that matter most to them.
[You can find the full results of the polls, including the exact questions that were asked, here. You can see answers to common questions about our polling process here.]
In the first Times/Siena poll since the former presidents trial ended with a guilty verdict on May 30, more than two-thirds of voters said the outcome of his Manhattan criminal case made no difference to their vote. Roughly 90 percent of Republicans still view Mr. Trump favorably.
And among the relatively small slice who said the conviction would make a difference in their vote, Republicans said the outcome would make them likelier to support him than oppose him by a roughly 4-to-1 margin.
At the same time, the poll revealed some vulnerabilities for Mr. Trump because of his conviction, especially among independent voters who could prove decisive in November. Twice as many independents said the conviction made them more likely to oppose Mr. Trump than support him, and a majority of independents also believe he received a fair trial.

Ex-Rep. Mondaire Jones may have lost Working Families Party line to unknown candidate who used to be a Republican – New York Post
Posted: at 1:58 am
Ex-Rep. Mondaire Jones appears to have lost a battle for a liberal third-party line on Tuesday in a blow to the suburban Democrats comeback bid.
Jones appears to have lost the primary to run under the Working Families Party banner, an often crucial second ballot line that could spell the difference between victory and defeat for Democratic Party candidates in New Yorks purple districts.
Jones was trailing unknown Anthony Frascone, who party officials claimed was put up to the race by Republican incumbent Rep. Mike Lawlers camp in a bid to split the vote on the left.
The GOP are a sad excuse for a political party if they can only win by stealing a ballot line, fumed WFP spokesman Ravi Mangla.
The 17th Congressional District in the Hudson Valley takes in all of Rockland and Putnam counties, part of northern Westchester and Dutchess counties.
Frascone led Jones 185 votes to 153 votes in the WFP primary, according to unofficial tallies.
The WFP said Frascone, who resides in Congers in Rockland County, never came in for an endorsement interview and has no contact history with the party leaders.
Frascone has been a registered WFP member for a number of years.
But he also has a history of voting with the Independence and the Republican parties before joining the left-leaning WFP and he even ran for local office as an Independence Party member in 2011, Politico reported.
Frascone did not return a phone call for comment.
In the last presidential race in 2020, 13,000 people voted on the WFP line for Jones.
Jones had no immediate comment.
Lawlers camp scoffed at claims that he and the GOP were behind the candidate who appeared to have defeated Jones in the primary.
It sounds like Mondaire Jones is trying to point the finger at anyone other than himself for his primary loss last night. From the GOP to Jewish voters in Ramapo to progressive activists in district, no one is safe from his efforts to save face after an embarrassing loss, said Lawler campaign spokesman Chris Russell.
I hope this temper tantrum isnt a preview of how hell react in November if he cant accept the results of an election now and concede, then how can anyone expect him to concede gracefully in November? Russell quipped.
Rockland County Republican Party chairman Lawrence Garvey said he knows Frascone, but had nothing to do with him running against Jones in the WFP primary.
For the Working Families Party to say the election was stolen by a member of their own party is the height of arrogance, Garvey said.
Jones had a falling out with WFP leaders after he endorsed challenger George Latimer over the WFP-backed incumbent Rep. Jamaal Bowman in a Democratic primary in the neighboring 16th House District.
That district stretches through much of Westchesterto Co-Op City in The Bronx. Latimer toppled Bowman in a landslide Tuesday night.
In 2022 after redistricting, Jones decided to abandon the Hudson Valley and instead run in the 10th Congressional District, covering downtown Manhattan and brownstone Brooklyn. Dan Goldman won the primary.
Jones now has moved back into the 17th CD, a move critics that saw critics blasting him as a carpetbagger.
Mondaire Jones doesnt know who he is, where he lives or what he stands for, Garvey, the Rockland GOP leader, quipped.
Meanwhile, a similar situation happened in the Conservative Party primary in the42nd state Senate district in the Hudson Valley.
Democratic Sen. James Skoufis, who is running for election to a fourth term, faces a rematch against Republican Dorey Houle, who he defeated narrowly by 1,400 votes in 2022.
The Conservative Party leadership in Orange County had cross-endorsed Houle, who ran on the partys ballot line in 2022.
But Tim Mitts, a tax preparer who was convicted of filing fraudulent returns in Kentucky in 2008, won the primary.
Mitts in February changed his party registration from Repubilcan to Conservative.
Running on a second Conservative Party ballot line is often the difference between Republicans winning or losing in purple districts.

Republican Greg Lopez wins vacancy election to fill out remainder of retired Rep. Ken Buck’s term – Colorado Public Radio
Posted: at 1:58 am
Updated: 11:10 p.m. June 25, 2024.
Voters in Colorados 4th Congressional District are sending Republican Greg Lopez to Congress to fill the rest of former Rep. Ken Bucks term this Congress.
Colorados fourth is the states most Republican House seat and Lopez went into the election favored to win. He faced Democrat Trisha Calvares, a former staffer at the US Science Foundation and the AFL-CIO, Libertarian Hannah Goodman and Frank Atwood with the Approval Voting Party.
As of 11 p.m., Lopez led with 58 percent of the vote, followed by Calvarese with 34 percent in preliminary results.
Lopez sold himself as a placeholder candidate, someone who would only fill the seat for the rest of the year, making him a lame duck right from the start.
Before this election, Lopez, a small business owner who served in the U.S. Air Force out of high school, had two unsuccessful runs for governor in 2018 and 2022. The first, and until now only, election he won was in 1992, when he was elected mayor of Parker as a Democrat before switching to become a Republican. He also served as the Colorado Director of the Small Business Administration during the Obama administration.
Hes also had some run-ins with the law. Lopez settled a federal case alleging he improperly tried to influence colleagues from the SBA asking for a favor for a friend. In 2003, he was charged with a DUI and in 1993 he and his wife were cited in a domestic violence incident. He was accused of pushing and kicking his wife, who was pregnant at the time after she hit him.
The winner wont be serving as part of the 118th Congress for long. There are only about 45 legislative days on the calendar from July to the end of the year.

Rep. Claudia Tenney secures Republican nomination in another bid for NY-24 seat – Spectrum News
Posted: at 1:58 am
U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenney secured the Republican nomination in her bid for another term representing New Yorks 24th Congressional District, the Associated Press projects.
Tenney was defeating Geneva attorney Mario Fratto in Tuesdays primary elections 61% to 40%, according to to the latest unofficial results from AP.
This is Frattos second failed attempt at seeking the GOP nomination for the district, which snakes along Lake Ontarios shoreline from the Thousand Islands to Niagara County. He called into question votes Tenney has taken on immigration, transgender rights and funding for Planned Parenthood, among other things.
Tenney formerly represented parts of the Mohawk Valley and Southern Tier for two nonconsecutive terms in Congress before shifting to the new 24th District after the redistricting process.
An attorney, former state assemblymember and businesswoman, Tenney has long been a supporter of Donald Trump and had the backing of the former president, House Speaker Mike Johnson, House Freedom Caucus founding member Jim Jordan, and others.
Tenney will face Democrat David Wagenhauser in November.

Pa.’s only Black Republican elected to state government didn’t attend Trump’s North Philly rally – The Philadelphia Inquirer
Posted: at 1:58 am
As former President Donald Trump tried to attract Black voters in North Philadelphia last week, Pennsylvanias only elected Black Republican in state government did not attend.
Pennsylvania Auditor General Tim DeFoor, the first person of color to hold a statewide row office and the only Black Republican currently elected to state government, has continually distanced himself from Trump.
DeFoor, who is running for a second term in November, said in a statement Tuesday that he did not attend Trumps rally because he had a prior engagement scheduled before he knew about the event. He said he is fully supportive of the Republican Party.
When asked why he didnt attend Trumps rally intended to appeal to Black voters, DeFoor still avoided mentioning Trump by name.
Im pleased that our candidates are reaching out to all communities with our message of fiscal restraint and safer neighborhoods, DeFoor added. We are a big tent party and we welcome support from all voters.
While his fellow Republican incumbent row officer, Treasurer Stacy Garrity, is an outspoken supporter of Trumps, DeFoor has largely avoided talking about him. DeFoor also mulled aligning with the centrist Forward Party last month, but backed out due to concerns that voters would incorrectly think he was leaving the Republican Party.
Following the 2020 presidential election, Trump demanded that Pennsylvania audit its election and spread false claims of voter fraud. But DeFoor said his own election was fair. As far as anybody elses election, thats a conversation that you would have to have with them, DeFoor added, in a 2021 House committee hearing.
Republicans are trying to capitalize on recent polling showing that his support among non-white voters may have strengthened, while Bidens support from non-white voters has slipped. Trumps campaign has localized this effort in Philadelphia by opening a campaign office in Northeast Philadelphia and hosting his first-ever Philly rally last week. GOP members of Congress, U.S. Reps. Byron Daniels (R., Fla.) and Wesley Hunt (R., Texas) held a Congress, Cognac and Cigars event earlier this month to garner the black male vote that led to backlash after Daniels, who is Black, made controversial comments about the Jim Crow era.
Trumps rally at Temple University on Saturday was in the state House district of Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, DeFoors Democratic opponent in November. Kenyatta spoke at a news conference hours before the rally, and criticized Trumps attempts at outreach to Black communities.
Tim doesnt have the guts to stand up to Donald Trump, Kenyatta said in a statement. Pennsylvanians deserve an auditor general who will stand up for our democracy and who will work to make our government one that works for them. Thats what Ill do.

Republican-voting retiree charged with felony after threatening to blow up the governor – Arkansas Times
Posted: at 1:58 am
Susan L. Scott of Fort Smith has been charged with threatening to cause a catastrophe and resisting arrest after police say she threatened to use a bomb to kill Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
According to court records, Scott called the Capitol on June 14, threatened to build a bomb and said she would use that bomb to destroy the governors office. In the affidavit for probable cause for her arrest, Fort Smith police said they arrived at Scotts house a short time after her threat to the governors office, at which point Scott continued to verbally threaten Sanders life. As she was being taken into custody, Scott allegedly kicked and head-butted the arresting officer, resulting in an additional charge of second-degree battery on a police officer.
The available information does not specify the reason for Scotts animosity toward Sanders. Scotts voter-registration does not indicate a party preference; however, voter records show she voted in Republican primaries from 2014 through 2024.
Both charges are class-D felonies that carry potential sentences of up to six years each and potential fines of up to $10,000 per offense. Scott was arraigned in Sebastian County Circuit Court today and was released on bond with specific conditions imposed on her, including having no contact of any kind with the governors office, possessing no weapons or explosives, having no contact with Sanders or Sanders family and staying away from the Sanders familys home, work and school.
Scott, who lists herself as retired and on a fixed income, has asked to be represented by a public defender.

In South Carolina, 3 G.O.P. Women Fought an Abortion Ban. They Lost Their Races. – The New York Times
Posted: at 1:58 am
Last year, the five self-proclaimed Sister Senators from South Carolina were awarded the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award after they joined together across party lines to block the legislature from passing a near-total abortion ban.
But a prize from the nations most storied Democratic family may not be the best calling card in Republican primaries in the red-state South.
All three of the Republican women in the group of five the others were a Democrat and an independent faced primary challenges, and all three have now lost. State Senator Katrina Shealy, who was the only female member of the chamber after she won in 2012, failed to win a runoff on Tuesday against the son of a former legislator.
The two others lost earlier this month: Penry Gustafson lost by a 64 point margin; Sandy Senn lost by 33 votes, small enough to trigger a recount, but conceded the race before that.
South Carolina ranks 47th for the number of women in its state legislature, just above Mississippi, Tennessee and West Virginia. The losses this month are likely to mean that no Republican women will serve in the next session. Ms. Shealy was the only woman to lead a committee in the chamber.
While the Sister Senators succeeded three times in blocking a near-total ban that would have defined life as beginning at conception, the Senate then passed a six-week ban that was upheld by the State Supreme Court (which had recently lost its only female justice).

Rags to Riches: 3 Nanotech Stocks That Could Make Early Investors Rich – InvestorPlace
Posted: at 1:56 am
Business leaders often talk about thinking big. But when it comes to nanotech stocks, the future is all about focusing on the small things.
According to the European Commission, nanotechnology represents a scientific and engineering discipline thats devoted to designing, producing, and using structures, devices, and systems by manipulating atoms and molecules at nanoscale. Nanoscales refer to having one or more dimensions of the order of 100 nanometers (or 100 millionth of a millimeter).
Stated differently, nanotechnology centers on density; that is, being able to pack various capacities in an extremely small space. According to Grand View Research, this field features enormous potential and applications across various scientific domains, including chemistry, biomedical science, mechanics and materials science.
In terms of hard numbers, the global nanotech market reached a valuation of $3.69 billion in 2022. By 2030, the ecosystem could be worth $36.85 billion, or a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 33.1%. With projected expansion like that, it pays to at least consider these nanotech stocks.

Based in Plainview, New York, Veeco Instruments (NASDAQ:VECO) falls under the semiconductor sector; specifically, it works in the field of semiconductor equipment and materials. Per its public profile, Veeco focuses on thin film process equipment primarily to develop electronic devices. Its one of the top nanotech stocks thanks to the microscopic precision needed to develop these high-performance semiconductor devices.
To be sure, VECO stock has already enjoyed a robust performance so far this year. However, its one of the small middle-capitalization plays, making it an intriguing idea for the long haul. One aspect thats impressive is its financial performance. Between the second quarter of 2023 to Q1 2024, the companys average earnings per share reached 46.3 cents. This translated to an earnings surprise of 23.6%.
During the trailing 12 months, Veeco did incur a net loss of $17.25 million or 36 cents per share. However, revenue hit $687.41 million. Overall, for fiscal 2024, covering experts anticipate a recovery, with EPS possibly rising 7.1% to hit $1.81. Further, sales could increase by 8% to hit $719.47 million. Therefore, VECO makes a solid case for nanotech stocks to consider.

Headquartered in Billerica, Massachusetts, Bruker (NASDAQ:BRKR) falls under the healthcare sector, specifically dealing with medical devices. Per its corporate profile, Bruker with its subsidiaries develops, manufactures and distributes scientific instruments, along with analytical and diagnostic solutions. Many of its tools such as electronic microscopes are vital for nanotechnology research and development.
Financially, BRKR stock makes a case for top nanotech stocks thanks to its consistency of performance. Between Q2 2023 to Q1 2024, the companys average EPS reached 64.3 cents. This translated to an average earnings surprise of 13.63%. Notably, the company beat all of the past four of its bottom-line profitability targets.
During the TTM period, Bruker posted net income of $401.6 million, translating to earnings of $2.73 per share. Revenue during this cycle reached $3 billion. For fiscal 2024, analysts anticipate on average a slight dip in EPS to $2.66. However, revenue could see a 14% rise from the prior year to hit $3.38 billion.
In fiscal 2025, EPS could move up 18% to land at $3.14. On the top line, revenue may see an 8.6% lift to reach $3.67 billion. All in all, BRKR makes another solid case for nanotech stocks.

If you want to dive into the extremely speculative side of the sector, consider Luna Innovations (NASDAQ:LUNA). Falling under the technology sphere, Luna is involved in the scientific and technical instruments industry. According to its profile, Luna provides fiber optic tests, measurements and control products worldwide. Its advanced optical solutions feature relevance for entities seeking nanoscale measurements and monitoring.
To be fair, Lunas speculative nature shows when it comes to its earnings performances. It hasnt been hit or miss. Rather, its been more miss or not miss. However, the company does enjoy generally positive analyst coverage that goes back to November of last year. The latest call from Needhams Alex Henderson is a buy with an $8 price target, which is massive.
During the TTM period, Luna posted a net loss of $1.12 million, or three cents per share. Revenue in the cycle landed at $116.61 million. Now, due to accounting errors, some of the numbers that have been broadcasted are not fully reliable. Obviously, thats a concern.
Still, if you want to take the risk, analysts see fiscal 2024 revenue to rise to $165.24 million. Thats a sizable leap from prior top-line performances, making it a high-leverage gamble among nanotech stocks.

UCF Researcher Further Explores Nanotech to Improve Cancer and Disease Detection – UCF
Posted: at 1:56 am
UCF Department of Chemistry Associate Professor Xiaohu Xia works with nanoparticles for a variety of applications including for improving medical diagnostics. (Photo by Antoine Hart)
Early discovery of debilitating diseases such as cancer or dementia is critical in determining treatment and saving lives.
UCF Department of Chemistry Associate Professor Xiaohu Xia recently received a $1.3 million R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health to continue his promising nanoparticle research that could drastically improve disease detection accuracy by more than 300-times.
The NIH awards R01 grants to investigators for mature research projects that are hypothesis-driven with strong preliminary data like Xias.
In our preliminary laboratory results, we have demonstrated that our nanoparticle-based artificial enzymes are able to improve the detection sensitivity by about 300 times better than the current assets in the market, he says.
His research spans four years, and it focuses on enhancing the diagnostic efficacy of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) testing by using specially tailored nickel-platinum nanoparticles that will bind to specific disease biomarkers such as proteins and hormones in bodily fluid samples.
Xia is the sole principal investigator, but he will oversee postdoctoral and graduate students who will assist him.
Although there has been some experimentation with substituting nanoparticles in ELISA testing, there hasnt been a monumental advancement in diagnostic sensitivity in decades, and Xia says he aims to make the leap through his nanoparticle research.
ELISA technology is one of the most popular technologies used for screenings of a variety of different diseases, he says. For example, when you go to the doctors office and do your annual physical exam, the bloodwork may use ELISA to detect a variety of different biomarkers. But to breakthrough this technology, you have to completely replace the natural enzyme with something else.
The switch from using traditional peroxidase found in horseradish root to artificial enzyme mimics comprised of nanoparticles could result in numerous benefits, the researcher says. Xia says the nanoparticles are significantly more stable and active, which could mean more reliable and accurate ELISA test results.
In commercial technology, people are using natural enzymes that are extracted from plants, Xia says. In our technology, were going to replace the natural enzyme with our artificial enzymes which are made of metal nanoparticles. The artificial enzymes are much more efficient than natural enzymes so that means were going to have a stronger color signal which can substantially improve the detection sensitivity of this technology.
In this study, Xia endeavors to build and maximize the nanoparticles capabilities while demonstrating and confirming their efficacy in clinical use by testing different disease biomarkers in human blood samples. He says he plans to fine-tune the structure of the nanoparticles to engineer the most optimal artificial enzymes for diagnostics.
It will be the first time his nanoparticles will interact with clinical samples, Xia says.
Were going to further improve the sensitivity by using the unique nanoparticles and to use two cancers for demonstration, he says. In this project, we propose to detect prostate cancer and colorectal cancer in the early stages in blood. With our new technology, we hope to achieve early diagnosis of these cancers.
The nanoparticles will serve as enhanced artificial mimics of conventional enzymes to bond and react in a way that will show color when combined with bioreceptors, such as antibodies, if the target disease biomarkers are present.
When a biomarker is detected, the test generates a visible color output that can be used to quantify its concentration. The stronger the color is, the stronger the concentration. The tests must be highly sensitive to prevent false negatives that could delay treatment or interventions.
Xia is hopeful his research will reveal that the nanoparticles will have record efficiency in providing quicker results and more definitive contrast in the coloring of samples while simplifying the procedures and devices needed for testing.
Detection sensitivity is critical for diagnostics for significant diseases, he says. For the very early stages, the concentration of biomarkers may be very low and not detected by conventional ELISA. With our new technology, were aiming to substantially improve the sensitivity so we can detect even low concentrations of biomarkers in patient samples.
He aspires to use the foundational knowledge gained from his initial research in 2021 to impact the general field of in vitro diagnostics by offering a type of ultraefficient artificial enzymes that are suitable for many diagnostic technologies even beyond ELISA.
The ultimate goal we want to achieve is early detection of significant diseases like cancer and in the future, we also want to detect some other very challenging diseases like maybe even Alzheimers Disease, Xia says.
Researchers Credentials
Xia joined UCFs Department of Chemistry, part of UCFsCollege of Sciences, in 2018. He has a joint appointment in UCFsNanoScience Technology Center. Prior to his appointment at UCF, he worked at Michigan Technological University as an assistant professor and at Georgia Institute of Technology as a postdoctoral researcher.
