France talks tough on Ukraine while gobbling up more Russian gas – POLITICO Europe

Posted: April 12, 2024 at 5:51 am

France's economy ministry said the Russian LNG issue is neither about TotalEnergies' contract or activities, but about the opportunity and risks of imposing new sanctions for the entire European Union.

But experts arent buying it.

Nguyen, the analyst, laid out a multi-tiered argument. One, alternative imports do exist, two, French industry is now consistently using less gas since 2022 and three, national storage levels are higher than last year's. Taken together, that lowers the risks of supply shortages.

At the EU level, too, the bloc could replace its Russian imports with deliveries from places like the U.S., said Aura Sabadus, a senior gas market analyst at the ICIS market intelligence firm, even if an immediate LNG ban may lift prices.

The debate comes as the European Commission, the EUs executive, begins preparations for yet another sanctions package against Russia, its 14th.

But LNG is unlikely to feature in that package, despite repeated requests from the Baltic countries and Poland. Hungary has historically opposed measures on gas, and all 27 EU members must approve sanctions.

Opinion | Everyone Wants to Seize Russia’s Money. It’s a Terrible Idea. – The New York Times

Posted: at 5:51 am

The Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, has brought a glimmer of hope to supporters of the Ukrainian war effort. He suggested to Fox News on March 31 that he would try to rally his divided party behind the REPO Act. That piece of legislation would allow President Biden, working with European allies, to seize Russian currency reserves frozen in the West and use them to aid Ukraine.

Grabbing these reserves would be politically convenient. Since Russias invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the United States and its allies have thrown more than a quarter-trillion dollars into the war, to little ultimate effect. Ukraine has lately suffered a string of battlefield defeats. Prolonging the war is a project that Americans of all political leanings have been steadily less willing to fund through taxes.

Mr. Johnson backs Ukraines war effort and sees supporting it as a responsibility of American leadership. But his caucus more in tune with the Republican voter base has stymied him. The REPO Act might offer both Mr. Johnson and Mr. Biden a way to duck controversy.

Thus far, the idea of supplying Ukraine through a spending bill has brought scorn from congressional Republicans who wonder whether Americans taxes wouldnt be better spent on defending the U.S.-Mexico border. The REPO Act, by contrast, could make Russia foot the bill for its own aggression, as a group of Brookings Institution scholars puts it. Mr. Johnson calls it pure poetry. It is a tempting idea.

But it is a bad one. In any free country there is a constitutional wariness of allowing the government to do anything without levying taxes, for good reason. Taxes and accountability go together. Generally, if citizens arent paying for a government program through taxes, they are paying for it in some less straightforward way by taking on debt, for instance, or permitting an outsize governmental role for some corporation or other private interest.

The REPO Act carries additional risks. The very act of seizing Russian assets would pose dangers to the U.S. economy, because other countries, not just Russia, would view it as an act of brigandage. This could weaken the dollars status as the main global reserve currency.

New Plot Striking the Heart of Russia Is Nightmare for Putin – The Daily Beast

Posted: at 5:51 am

Ukraine has conducted a series of audacious attacks deep inside Russia against military and economic targets, including at least two drones striking a training facility on Tuesday. Ukraine has used drones to attack Russia before, even striking the Kremlin itself, but Ukraine has never used so many drones in such a short space of time and has never before reached this deep into Russian territory. For over a month, Ukraines one-way attack (OWA) drone program has targeted Russias production facilities, oil infrastructure, and some of the airbases that facilitate Russias missile strikes.

OWA drones like the ones Ukraine uses force defenders to ask hard questions. The first is how do you preserve an expensive and limited stock of air defense missiles? The (relatively) low cost of the drones means that intercepting every single one at a cost comparable to the drone is often difficult. On the other hand, failing to intercept them can be even more costly. Ukraines successful drone strikes since the start of the war have destroyed millions of dollars worth of Russian equipment. The other question for defenders is how much air defense can be spared from the intense fighting at the front to protect targets in the rear? Stationing air defense away from the fighting makes it harder for a military to protect its troops from drones and aircraft.

Russian leaders are in the difficult position of trying to determine where air defense is most needed across thousands of miles of territory. The in-land attacks mean that citizens across the countryalready feeling the strain of military recruitment drives and a war-time economyare being confronted by the true cost of the war in a way that Putin had never imagined when he launched a Blitzkrieg assault on Ukraine two years ago.

Not all of Ukraines drone attacks are equally damaging to Russia. Of the three recent types of targetsoil infrastructure, airfields, and production facilitiesthe attacks on Russias oil industry caused the most extensive damage. Ukrainian officials told the press that their attacks likely disrupted 10 percent or more of Russias refining capacity. Refineries can be repaired of course, but not all facilities struck are back online, and Russias oil industry is doubtlessly asking itself how many more attacks Ukraine has in store.

Ukrainian attacks on airfields, which tend to be better defended, were less successful. On March 20, Ukrainian drones attacked Engels airbase, from which Russia launches some of its deadliest missile attacks on Ukrainian cities. However, theres no confirmation from Ukraine or Russia that they hit the airfield. On April 5, Ukraine launched a larger attack against three airfields across Russia, including the Morozovsk airfield. Ukrainian officials initially claimed to have destroyed as many as six Russian fighters at Morozovsk, which would have been a stunning success. However, later satellite imagery of the airfield didnt show any destroyed aircraft.

Ukraines biggest successes with OWA drones tend to come against sites with limited air defense. On April 2, Ukrainian drones attacked Alabuga, where Russia assembles and manufactures Shahed drones in a large complex of buildings. Footage posted to social media showed a dronethat appeared to be a small plane converted into a dronefly into the facility. Officials from the facility later confirmed at least one hit to the complexs dormitory.

The repurposed plane is strange, but not out of character. Ukraines OWA drones vary wildly across the different models. Several different firms in Ukraine produce them and some may have been supplied from abroad. On the cheaper end, one kind of Ukrainian drone is constructed from cheap materials like plywood, plastic bottles, and pipes. Most of Ukraines drones are economical by military standards due to limited funding and access to advanced components. For instance, nearly all Ukrainian OWA drones use a propeller for propulsion, since they are cheaper. On the pricier side, several Ukrainian drones appear to have a jet engine for propulsion. On April 7, Russians near Belgorod spotted Ukrainian drones powered by jet engines heading to attack an unknown target. Jet engines are harder to procure in bulk, but are significantly harder to intercept than their slower cousins.

Ukraines attacks obviously have positive impacts in the war effort, but they have received a mixed reception from some of its international partners. U.S. officials have stated several times that they dont support or enable Ukrainian strikes into Russia. American rhetoric on drones echoes the longstanding debate for the Biden administration on the provision of long-range weapons that Russia might perceive as escalatory. U.S. leaders have often shifted their opinion on what weapons are escalatory, but are seemingly not yet ready to do so in this case. Regardless, it does not appear that the Biden administration is substantively changing its stance towards Ukraine as a result of the strikes, though further aid is still stymied by uncertainty in Congress.

Other partners may be less worried. For instance, the U.K. has promised and delivered different kinds of drones to Ukraine in the past year. One that started as an unarmed target drone with the potential to serve as an effective OWA drone, the Banshee, has been spotted in Ukraine. Between Ukraines indigenous drone production and potential support from partners, Ukraines strikes into Russia are starting to make Russian defense officials just as concerned about protecting their skies as the Ukrainians.

Misguided culture warriors should heed the golden rule [column] – LNP | LancasterOnline

Posted: at 5:50 am

Our beautiful city was shaken Saturday, March 23, by terroristic threats of violence fueled by hatred toward members of the LGBTQ+ community. A planned Drag Queen Story Hour at Lancaster Public Library had drawn the wrath of some local elected officials and conservative Christians.

An email, which law enforcement officials believe originated outside the United States, warned that bombs had been placed in the library and in the homes of the librarys executive director, the president of Lancaster Pride (which had sponsored the story hour) and an LNP | LancasterOnline reporter, as well as in the LNP | LancasterOnline newsroom and the Starbucks at 101 N. Queen St.

I would not be surprised to learn that whoever sent the vile email had been influenced by right-wing extremists such as Chaya Raichik, Christopher Rufo and Matt Walsh. These individuals and others have been intentionally stoking bigotry and hatred toward the LGBTQ+ community. They claim they want to protect children, but their words and actions have the opposite effect. They vilify and demonize LGBTQ+ people and encourage what is called stochastic terrorism as Scientific American magazine explained, that is violence spurred by ideologically driven hate speech.

The unfounded opinions of Republican Lancaster County Commissioners Josh Parsons and Ray DAgostino also likely contributed to the fear and chaos downtown. One wonders whether the commissioners realize that performers be they actors or drag performers generally adapt their performances for their intended audiences.

Consider comedian and actor Lewis Black for instance. His acerbic and curmudgeonly stand-up routines are not suitable for children, and yet, he was cast in the delightfully poignant Pixar Animation Studios childrens film Inside Out as the character Anger and he did an outstanding job in the role. His performance as Anger was completely appropriate for children, just as a Drag Queen Story Hour would have been, had it not been canceled because of security concerns.

Parsons and DAgostino falsely equated Miss Amie Vanits planned Drag Queen Story Hour with drag performances that are clearly intended only for adult audiences. Whether wittingly or unwittingly, the Republican commissioners bore false witness against, and incited anger toward, Christopher Paolini, who performs as Miss Amie.

As a public theologian, it is part of my calling to stand up for those who are marginalized and oppressed, whether that oppression comes from governmental power or religious institutions. Current political discourse by so-called culture warriors from conservative Christian traditions is rife with hateful rhetoric toward LGBTQ+ people. This rhetoric often leads to the bullying of LGBTQ+ kids and has been proven to have detrimental effects on their mental health.

These misguided culture warriors not only seek to deny human rights and dignity to LGBTQ+ people but have also at times called for the violent eradication of gay and transgender people. In doing so, they misuse and weaponize the Bible.

While the Bible is a truly important anthology of texts, and has much to teach its readers, it is also a very human collection fraught with disparate theological ideas and replete with human frailties and failings.

Despite those failings, the Bible also teaches principles that, if truly followed, would radically alter human history and make life better for untold numbers of people. Following the golden rule and unconditionally loving our neighbors whether they look like we do, sound like we do, believe and worship like we do, or love like we do would profoundly change the social and political landscape. Treating others as we would have them treat us precludes misrepresenting people the way gay and transgender individuals are so often misrepresented.

In the early 1990s, I was taught dehumanizing anti-LGBTQ+ bigotry and hate by my Southern Baptist church. Fortunately, Gods grace has allowed me to put down the burdensome weight of that bigotry in order to be loving and fully accepting of the LGBTQ+ community.

Being gay or transgender is neither a sin nor a choice, regardless of how some people interpret the Bible. It is impossible to love ones neighbor while simultaneously denying their humanity or refusing to accept their lived experiences as true.

Diversity is the norm throughout all of Gods creation. A perfunctory look at the natural world shows this to be true from the oceans to the skies, we see biological diversity everywhere we look. This tells me that God delights in diversity.

Humanity is likewise diverse, and I hope that Lancaster Countys GOP commissioners and all other Christians come to understand this fact. Some of us are straight; some of us are gay. Some of us are cisgender; some of us are transgender. All of us are beautiful expressions of divine creativity and of Gods delight in diversity. I believe God calls us to embrace that wondrous diversity in order to create and revel in a world of radical inclusivity, where love of all our neighbors is the rule and not the exception. May it now be so in Lancaster County and beyond.

This Is My New Golden Rule for Renting Vacation Homes (I Was Doing It All Wrong) – Yahoo Life

Posted: at 5:50 am

My friends and I are big on annual group trips, and to pull it off we love renting unique vacation homes where we can make lasting memories together. Over the years weve tried everything from renting a cliffside villa in Mexico to a cozy winter cabin nestled in the Pocono mountains. And while those trips have been unforgettable, every time we try to plan a new vacation, its tougher and tougher to find a home to rent that will make everyone happy.

Because were a large group that has already agreed on a specific set of dates and location, when we do find a rental listing we all love, the property is either booked solid or completely out of our price range. As it turns out, Ive just been going about the search the wrong way. Ive recently cracked the code, and Im going to share it with you.

The secret to finding an incredible home to rent for your vacation is actually a simple one start with the what, not the where. Look for great entertainment first and a destination second. For more stress-free travel planning, follow this golden rule when renting a vacation home. Youll have more unique options to choose from and wont feel like you have to settle or book super early to snag a great vacation home.

Looking through homes in one place, with specific features available on certain dates, is like trying to complete a puzzle with pieces that just dont fit. But if you focus on the fun stuff you need in the perfect rental first like pickleball, a pool, or a great grill and patio combo and broaden your search to look for homes that offer everything on your list, despite the location, you could discover that your dream vacation rental isnt where you expected it to be. Youre still getting all of that great downtime with friends and family, just maybe two towns or one island over.

I had this epiphany at a press preview with Vrbo to celebrate the brands list of Vacation Rentals of the Year 2024. Each year Vrbo recognizes a curated list of private home rentals that meet a specific criteria: They must be top rated (and raved about) by past guests, offer unique spaces and amenities that promote prime togetherness, and be rented by whats called a Premier Host who values offering an overall quality guest experience.

The homes on this years list ranged from affordable cottage getaways in Big Sky, Montana, and Winchendon, Massachusetts, to luxe hideaways in Cabo San Lucas and Austin, Texas.

I spent three nights at a cliffside escape in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, called Villa Cin Cin. The home was breathtaking, with panoramic views of the island, oversized suites for guests, and cozy indoor and outdoor dining and entertainment areas for yoga and swimming.

Christine, the homes owner and host, told me its often booked by big families looking for a place where they can have la carte fun for all. Her villa is popular because it checks that box, thanks to itsprivate beach access and spacious suites large enough for entire families to visit together, she says.

Going forward Ill start group vacation planning with a list of musts, like a secluded location where we wont disturb anyone laughing loudly all night or a heated pool for a night swim. Ill worry less about the destination and more about giving everyone on the trip the amenities they need to piece together their perfect stay, especially on trips where we rarely ever leave the rental.

Now I search an entire region, like Caribbean, or a state, like Utah, and select the home features that will make us the happiest. Doing this showsmore incredible (and available) options than I have available days off. It also shows more options at every budget and better availability too. No matter where youre looking, consider expanding your view of family (or friend) time, and your search will widen with it.

Happy vacation home hunting!

First Ride: The 2024 Giant Trance X Advanced – Pinkbike.com

Posted: at 5:50 am

Giant has a passion for two things - bicycles and some confusing naming conventions. With that in mind, let me introduce you to the Giant Trance X Advanced, the Trance X, the Trance X Advanced SX and, of course, the Trance X SX. While some of them might sound like a burlesque techno evening, I can assure you that they are bicycles, and in fairness, they look to be ones that will cater to mountain bikers who want all that makes a modern trail bike good - mature, progressive geo, clever features and plenty of adjustment.

140 mm travel rear, 150 mm fork 29" Wheels / 27.5" for SX Carbon or Alloy frame 64.8 degree head tube angle Geo and reach adjustment Sizes: S, M, L, XL Weight: 13.7kg / 30.2lb (size large) Price: $3,700 - $8,000 USD giant-bicycles.com/

The Maestro 3 system used on this bike features a flip chip, but it's not there only there to tune the angles of your bike. The chip, which offers three positions, also doubles up as a way of adjusting between 29 and 27.5" wheels. As stock, the SX versions will come mixed wheeled only, whereas the other models will come stock 29" but can go to 27.5". Due to the extra travel, the SX won't be able to go to bigger wheels. Giant suggests the bike is ridden in the mid or low positions with a larger wheel and mid or high with a smaller one. Outside of the suggestion, it will work, but the geometry might get slightly wayward.

Stock builds will be set in the mid position. From there, the low position reduces the angle by 0.4 degrees, and the high steepens by around 0.3 degrees. The full 29" bike has a head angle of 64.8-degrees, and the Trance SX 63.6-degrees. The seat tube angles see a similar difference between the two models, at 77.5 and 76.3 respectively, and are potentially inverse of what a rider may want. Typically, longer travel bikes are ridden on steeper climbs and descents, and shorter travel, slightly less aggressive ones are slightly shallower gradients. In an ideal world, the slacker SX would have a steeper seat tube to compensate. However, that's just the limitation of making one frame do two wheel sizes, flip chips or not.

The bike's reach is quite contemporary, at 480 mm for a large size. Again, the small 27.5" rear wheel of the SX will affect reach, reducing it by around 10mm and slightly increasing the stack value.

The bikes use the same rear end length across all models and sizes.

Would it be a Giant if it didn't feature Maestro? That's one for the philosophers. The Maestro 3 system uses a swingarm and two co-rotating links to drive the shock. The bottom shock-eyelet hardware also doubles up the mount for the lower link to connect to the front triangle. Giant seems to be all-in on Trunnions, and this Trance X is no different.

Trance X Advanced 1 - $7,000USD / $8,499 CAD Fox Performance Elite Grip2 36 and Factory Float X, SRAM GX AXS T-Type drivetrain, Shimano XT M8120 brakes, Giant TRX carbon wheels

Trance X Advanced 2 - Not Available in US / $5,899 CAD - Fox Rhythm Grip 36 and Performance Float, Shimano SLX drivetrain, Shimano Deore M6120 brakes, Giant TRX carbon wheels

Trance X Advanced 3 - P&A TBC Fox Rhythm Grip 36 and Performance Float, Shimano Deore drivetrain, Shimano BR-MT420 brakes, Giant TRX carbon wheels

Trance X 2 - Not Available in US / $3,899 CAD Fox Rhythm Grip 36 and Performance Float, Shimano Deore drivetrain, Shimano BR-MT420 brakes, Giant TRA2 alloy wheels

Trance X Advanced SX - $5,600 USD / $6,499 Fox Performance Elite Grip2 36 and Performance Elite Float X, Shimano SLX drivetrain, Shimano BR-MT420 brakes, Giant TRX carbon wheels

Trance X SX - Not Available in US / $3,999 CAD Fox Rhythm Grip 36 and Marzocchi Bomber Air, Shimano Deore Drivetrain, Shimano BR-MT420 brakes, Giant TRA2 alloy wheels

Having only got the bike a few days before the busiest week in the bike industry ever I certainly haven't got as much riding in as I would like on the new Trance. That said, some things are obvious. Firstly, this is an actual 29" trail bike that weighs around thirty pounds, which is a rarer sight than it once was. On the climbs, you can definitely surge up them, with the Maestro platform granting a lot of grip. It's also neutral and predictable in just about every way, which I personally really enjoy.

That said, it perhaps doesn't feel like the burliest of bikes and can feel a little skittish when going full chat, although I put that down to the Exo tires more than anything. Overall, this offers a nice blend of radical to reasonable, and I look forward to getting many more miles in on it over the spring.

Vaping is still cool in college and beyond for young adults : Shots – Health News – NPR

Many young people who started vaping nicotine as teens several years ago haven't quit the habit, data show.

G Kumar's vaping addiction peaked in college at the University of Colorado, when flavored, disposable vapes were taking off.

The disposables would have more than a thousand puffs in them. "I'd go through, let's say, 1,200 puffs in a week," said Kumar, who uses they/them pronouns.

Vaping became a crutch. Like losing a cell phone, losing a vape pen would set off a mad scramble. "It needs to be right next to my head when I fall asleep at night and then in the morning I have to thrash through the sheets and pick it up and find it," Kumar recalled.

They got sick often, including catching COVID and vaping through all of it.

Kumar, now 24, did end up quitting. But many of their generation can't shake the habit.

"Everyone knows it's not good for you and everyone wants to stop," said CU senior Jacob Garza who works to raise awareness about substance use as part of the school's Health Promotion program.

"But at this point, doing it all these years ... it's just second nature now," he said. "They're hooked on it."

For years, slick marketing by e-cigarette companies, and the allure of sweet, fruity or even candy-like flavors and names, led teens to try vaping. As more high schoolers and even younger kids picked up the behavior, doctors and researchers warned it could lead to widespread addiction, creating a 'Generation Vape.'

Now, new data about substance use among young adults suggests that many of those former teen vapers haven't quit.

In Colorado, the share of those aged 18 to 24 who regularly vaped rose by about 61% from 2020 to 2022 to nearly a quarter of that age group.

"That's an astounding increase in just two years," says Dr. Delaney Ruston, a primary care physician and documentary filmmaker.

Nationally, vaping rates for young adults increased from 7.6% in 2018 to 11% in 2021.

Disposable electronic cigarette devices displayed for sale on June 26, 2023. While most flavored disposables are officially banned in the U.S., they continue to be sold.

Research has shown nicotine is highly rewarding to the brains of young people.

"It's not surprising that many of them start in high school for social reasons, for all sorts of reasons," says Ruston, whose latest film is Screenagers Under the Influence: Addressing Vaping, Drugs, and Alcohol in the Digital Age. "And many of them now we're seeing this have continued to college and beyond."

Meanwhile, vape rates have actually dropped among Colorado high schoolers, said Tiffany Schommer, the tobacco cessation supervisor with Colorado's state health department.

At one point, before the pandemic, Colorado led the nation in youth vaping, topping 37 states surveyed for use of electronic cigarettes among high school students.

Vaping peaked among minors in Colorado in 2017 with 27% of Colorado youth reporting they had vaped in the past month, according to the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey. But by 2021, the most recent year for which there's data, that dropped to 16%.

Nationally vaping rates among high schoolers dropped from 28% in 2019 to 12.6% in 2023, according to the Annual National Youth Tobacco Survey.

But for many young people who started vaping at the height of the trend, a habit was set.

"E-cigarette use has increased, particularly among people who have never smoked [traditional cigarettes,]" said Schommer. "So these are folks who started with vapes, continue with vapes."

Preliminary data indicates that almost half of those vaping 18- to 24-year-olds started vaping before they turned 18, according to the Colorado 2022 Tobacco Attitudes and Behaviors Survey.

At Children's Hospital Colorado, pediatric pulmonologist Dr. Heather De Keyser pulls up on her screen a clouded X-ray of the lung of a young adult damaged by vaping.

"This is a patient with vaping-related lung injury," she says.

For years, doctors like her and public health experts wondered about the potential harmful impact of vaping on pre-adult bodies and brains especially the big risk of addiction

Dr. Heather De Keyser, pediatric pulmonologist at Children's Hospital Colorado, points to the X-ray of a lung of a young adult damaged by vaping.

"I think, unfortunately those lessons that we were worried we were going to be learning, we're learning. The data is bearing out in that," said De Keyser, an associate professor of pediatrics in the Breathing Institute at Children's Hospital Colorado. "We're seeing increases in those young adults. They weren't able to stop."

It's no coincidence the vaping rates soared during the pandemic, according to several public health experts.

For the past couple of years, undergraduates have talked about the challenges of isolation and using more substances, said Alyssa Wright, Early Intervention program manager at Health Promotion at CU Boulder.

"Just being home, being bored, being a little bit anxious, not knowing what's happening in the world," Wright said. "We don't have that social connection, and it feels like people are still even trying to catch up from that experience."

Other factors driving addiction are the high nicotine levels in vaping devices, and "stealth culture," says Chris Lord, CU Boulder's associate director of the Collegiate Recovery Center.

"The products they were using had five times more nicotine than previous vapes had," he says. "So getting hooked on that was ... almost impossible to avoid."

As far as "stealth culture," Lord means that vaping is exciting, something forbidden and secret. "I think as an adolescent, our brains are kind of wired that way, a lot of us," Lord said.

Wind the clock back half a decade and one could see the seeds of these current vaping rates.

In 2019, if you typed the word "Juul" into the search bar on YouTube, you could find an endless stream of videos of young people showing off how cool it was to use the company's sleek, high-tech-looking vaping device.

Juul packages are seen on a shop shelf on December 07, 2022.

In one video Colorado Public Radio found in 2019, two young women show how they "make parties more fun."

"We just chillin',' one says, laughing. "We vapin' and we Juul-in'."

Many of those videos are no longer available, pulled off the platform once the trend took off. Searching for Juul now brings up many videos warning of the dangers and how to talk to kids.

All over the U.S., state and local governments, including Colorado, filed suit, alleging Juul Labs misrepresented the health risks of its products.

Juul agreed to pay hundreds of millions in settlements, including a nearly $32 million settlement last year with Colorado.

Juul had become No. 1, the top e-cigarette company, the lawsuits argued, by first aggressively marketing directly to kids, who then spread the word themselves by posting to social media sites like YouTube, Instagram and TikTok.

"What vaping has done, getting high schoolers, in some cases even middle schoolers, hooked on vaping, is now playing out," says Colorado attorney general Phil Weiser, a parent of two teens himself. He said vape companies followed the tobacco industry playbook with a similar impact on young consumers. "They're still hooked. This is a very addictive product."

Juul did not respond to requests for comment.

R.J. Reynolds, which makes another popular brand, Vuse, sent NPR this statement: "We steer clear of youth enticing flavors, such as bubble gum and cotton candy, providing a stark juxtaposition to illicit disposable vapor products."

Other big vape companies, like Esco Bar, Elf Bar, Breeze Smoke and Puff Bar didn't respond to requests for comment.

"If we lived in an ideal world, adults would reach the age of 24 without ever having experimented with adult substances. In reality, young adults experiment," said Greg Conley, director of legislative & external affairs with American Vapor Manufacturers. "This predates the advent of nicotine vaping."

The FDA banned flavored vape cartridges in 2020 in an effort to crack down on marketing to minors, but the products are still easy to find.

One claim often made in defense of vaping is that it can help users quit cigarette smoking.

Joe Miklosi, a consultant to the Rocky Mountain Smoke-Free Alliance, a trade group for vape shops contends the shops are not driving vaping rates among young adults in Colorado.

"We keep demographic data in our 125 stores. Our average age (of customers) is 42," he says.

Vape shops sell products to help adult smokers quit, Miklosi says, with lower levels of nicotine than big companies like Juul. Miklosi claims he's talked to thousands of consumers who claimed vaping helped them quit smoking cigarettes.

But the Colorado data belies that, according to longtime tobacco researcher Stanton Glantz.

The 18-24 age group leads all age groups in regular use, and use gradually dropped with each age cohort, up to the 65+ demographic, of which just 1% use e-cigarettes.

The data are "completely inconsistent with the argument that most e-cigarette use is adult smokers trying to use them to quit," said Glantz, the now-retired director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California San Francisco.

Glantz says because of the onslaught of sleek technology, flavors, and marketing used by Juul and other companies "the kids are getting addicted younger and faster," compared to earlier decades when traditional cigarettes dominated the tobacco market.

For recent college graduate G Kumar, now a rock climber, the impetus to quit vaping was more ecological than health-related. It was "knowing the amount of trash [from used up vape devices] that I was accumulating and the amount of money I was spending," they said.

Kumar got some help from a package of cessation literature and quitting aids from CU's Health Promotion program. It included two boxes of eucalyptus-flavored toothpicks, which tasted awful to Kumar, but provided a distraction and helped with oral cravings.

"The fact that I could just gnaw on toothpicks for weeks on end was, I think, what kept me sane," Kumar said.

It took a while and a lot of willpower to overcome the intense psychological craving, something many others in that generation know all too well.

Parents warned over potentially fatal effects of spice vaping – The Irish News

Posted: at 5:50 am

PARENTS have been urged to talk to their children about the potentially lethal effects of vaping unknown substances such as spice.

The Public Health Agency issued the warning for the synthetic drug, which mimics the effects of cannabis.

Kevin Bailey, Regional Lead for Drugs and Alcohol at the PHA, said: Synthetic cannabinoids are relatively new drugs and evidence is still coming out about harms associated with their use. However, we do know that people can have severe reactions after using them, and using with vapes could make them even more unsafe.

He said the contents or strengths of products within vapes could not be fully verified, meaning the effects and duration of the effects could be unpredictable and change depending on the product and type of synthetic cannabinoid.

With hundreds of different combinations, he said some were stronger and more toxic than others, meaning there was no way of knowing what you were taking.

The dangers of taking these substances also increase if you add other drugs to the mix including alcohol, prescription medication and other illicit substances, he said.

You can become dependent on synthetic cannabinoids with regular use. For some people who use them frequently, dependence can develop quickly.

Inhaling synthetic cannabinoids, including spice, through a vape is extremely dangerous for young people.

The PHA is working to raise awareness of the issue with community and voluntary organisations, local councils, the PSNI, education sector as well as health and social care partners.

For young people, using substances is particularly dangerous during a time when they are still developing physically and mentally, with drugs having the potential to damage their cognitive and emotional development, Mr Bailey said.

Parents and guardians can play an important role in helping young people understand the risks, so they dont choose to take drugs without realising the harm they could be exposing themselves to. Dont wait until theres a problem before you decide to talk.

It is important to advise young people that regardless of what they have been told, even by a close friend, that it is impossible to know what is contained in these substances. All drugs, whether alcohol, illegal drugs or prescription medication, carry risks.

For young people with someone who has taken drugs and become unwell, the PHA urged them to seek medical help immediately.

It might be frightening and they will be scared of getting into trouble, but they need to look out for their friends, stay with them and get them help it could save their lives, a spokesperson said.

Study: Vaping Linked to Higher Risk of Heart Failure – Health.com

Posted: at 5:50 am

A new study suggests that people whove used electronic cigarettes at some point in their lives have a higher chance of developing heart failure compared to those whove never vaped.

Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are battery-operated devices that work by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine into an aerosol thats inhaled. The devices entered the scene in the early 2000s as a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes. Yet, a growing body of research suggests they also pose health risks.

More and more studies are linking e-cigarettes to harmful effects and finding that it might not be as safe as previously thought, said lead author Yakubu Bene-Alhasan, MD, MPH, a resident physician at MedStar Health in Baltimore, in a statement. The difference we saw was substantial. Its worth considering the consequences to your health, especially with regard to heart health.

Heart failure doesnt mean the heart stops working, as its name suggests. Instead, it's a serious but sometimes manageable condition that occurs when a persons heart cant pump enough blood and oxygen to other organs in the body. About 6.2 million people in the United States have heart failure.

While scientists know that smoking tobacco is one of the most significant lifestyle contributors to heart failure, theyre still exploring how e-cigarettes might influence the condition.

The new study, presented the American College of Cardiology's Annual Scientific Session and published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, did not show that using e-cigarettes triggers heart failure, Bene-Alhasan told Health. But he said there are reasons for researchers to believe it does.

Heres what you need to know about the connection between e-cigarettes and heart failure, including what could account for the devices impact on the heart.

The study included nearly 176,000 participants with an average age of 52. About 70% were White, 20% were Black, and 10% were Asian or Hispanic.

Researchers used data from electronic health records as well as participant surveys to determine whether people vaped, used tobacco in any form, or drank alcohol. The reports also showed whether participants had ever vaped in the past.

The team followed up with participants for about four years. During that time, a total of 3,242 people had developed heart failure.

After crunching the numbers, researchers found that people whod used e-cigarettes were 19% more likely than non-vapers to have a type of heart failure in which the heart muscle becomes stiff and doesnt fill with blood as it should. Vaping didnt appear to be linked to another kind of heart failure caused by a weakened heart.

As part of their analysis, the team adjusted for other key heart failure risk factors, including diabetes, high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, and a high body mass index.

Because the study was observational, it suggests only an association between vaping and heart failure and not that e-cigarettes cause the condition.

This adds to the list of potential conditions that are linked with vaping, Bene-Alhasan said.

However, Holly Middlekauff, MD, a professor of medicine and physiology at UCLAs David Geffen School of Medicine, told Health that the study was limited by researchers not knowing whether a person had ever smoked tobacco in the past. Because many people, especially older adults, use e-cigarettes to replace smoking, the supposed link between heart failure and e-cigarette use may, in reality, be an association between tobacco use and heart failure, she explained.

However, its unlikely that electronic cigarettes are harmless, she added. If you dont smoke tobacco cigarettes, you shouldnt start smoking electronic cigarettes.

For people who already smoke tobacco cigarettes, though, Middlekauff said that current evidence suggests that e-cigarettes offer a safer alternative. Indeed, the study also found that people who both smoked tobacco and used e-cigarettes raised their risk of heart failure by 60%.

I cant think of anything else thats legal to do that is more harmful to ones heart than smoking tobacco cigarettes, Middlekauff said.

Nicotine inhalation can increase heart rate, blood pressure and flow, and the narrowing of arteries. It also may lead to the hardening of arterial walls, which can cause a heart attack.

Research on mice indicates that vaping may cause the heart to stiffen, which can lead to heart failure over time. Other mouse studies suggest e-cigarette use may lead to inflammation, which plays a well-documented role in heart disease.

Bene-Alhasan said researchers need to explore whether vaping increases inflammation in people, too, as well as how inflammation might influence the development of heart failure.

Heart failure is now more and more being seen as an inflammatory disease, he noted.

Bene-Alhasan said his team plans to drill into the data to assess how heart failure risk differs among age groups. They also want to better understand how having a history of tobacco use influences heart failure risk.

According to Middlekauff, it will likely be decades before scientists fully know the effect vaping might have on heart failure, especially because the condition typically develops over many years.

Bene-Alhasan stressed that whats clear, however, is that vaping should be discouraged while other research is being done to examine the other effects of vaping.
