News round-up: Radical expats, Church of England anti-whiteness, and Jordan Peterson – UnHerd

Are American expats radicalising Portugal?
Complaints about immigration have sparked a surprising Right-wing moment in Portugals latest elections. The immigrants in question? Remote workers and passport bros, mostly Americans, who have flocked to the European country by the thousands to enjoy half-priced rent.
Portugals centre-right party is set to lead a minority government, with the socialists coming in second place. But the countrys Right-wing Chega party performed unusually well and could have considerable sway in the new government, thanks in large part to complaints about immigration and economic woes. Time will tell if Right-wingers will give expats the boot.
For those wishing the Church of England were a little more devout, it will come as no consolation that its senior clergy are increasingly signed up to the gospel of Black Lives Matter. Archdeacon of Liverpool Miranda Threlfall-Holmes was ratioed on social media last night after she postedabout her realisation that what the Church needs is more anti-whiteness.
Having attended a conference on the subject in the autumn, Threlfall-Holmes (who is white) claims she realised that whiteness is to race as patriarchy is to gender. For anyone confused, the cleric explained that lets have anti-whiteness, & lets smash the patriarchy. Sounds good. But whats this? Thats not anti-white, she added. Thats anti-oppression. Bemused commenters on Threlfall-Holmess post were told to seek out the training. When is anti-whiteness not anti-white? Well, Audre Lorde does move in mysterious ways
If you thought vaccine debates were behind us, think again. Theres a new clip doing the rounds of Jordan Peterson getting testy with YouTube personality Destiny over the safety and efficacy of Covid jabs.
Peterson, in a characteristically attention-grabbing jacket, said the vaccine wasnt technically even a vaccine, and that, while mandates have always existed, the scale and speed of Covid vaccine mandates were entirely unprecedented. Whatever the truth, its unlikely well be getting it from either Destiny or Peterson.

One Piece’s Final Villains Are Officially Immortal (And The Series Already Explained Why) – Screen Rant
Posted: at 4:40 pm
WARNING: SPOILERS FOR ONE PIECE CHAPTER #1111
Luffy and his Gear 5 form have taken on several of One Piece's most powerful foes, but the Five Elders present a new challenge by seemingly being immortal, a power that's been explained in the series past. Egghead Island is currently experiencing the culmination of several of the series' biggest mysteries, including one of One Piece's most anticipated battles against the Highest Authorities of the World Governmentfigures who all could have used a particular Devil Fruit to gain immortality.
Elder Saint Jaygarcia Saturn arrived on the island and home of One Piece's smartest man, Dr.Vegapunk, to ensure the doctor was properly dealt with for his crimes. As the situation on Egghead grew beyond his control, Saturn summoned the other Elders to help prevent Luffy and Dr.Vegapunk's secrets from escaping the island. In chapter #1111, the Five Elders have suffered so much damage that even Gear 5 Luffy claims they are immortal, which is not entirely impossible.
An ability that grants a character eternal life is possible in One Piece with the help of the Op-Op No Mi (aka the Operation Devil Fruit). The current wielder, Trafalgar Law, is not the first person in the franchise to have the fruit. This is the first part of the puzzle explaining how the Five Elders could have obtained immortality.
Law's complex Devil Fruit gives him a wide range of abilities that have allowed him to perform outrageous feats like flipping massive naval warships and dramatically altering the bodies of his foes. However, he was force-fed the fruit as a young child in a desperate bid to prevent the vile Donquixote Doflamingo from getting his hands on it. Doflamingo's desire for the fruit's power does not stem from the abilities that Law has displayed in the series so far. Instead, he wanted to take advantage of its ultimate ability to sacrifice its user to grant another person immortality.
Doflamingo's kind-hearted brother, Rosinante, was murdered by the despicable One Piece villain in an attempt to save Law. The kind soul's plan to steal the Op-Op Devil Fruit in order to cure a young Law's fatal lead poisoning was met with several road bumps. After many unforeseen setbacks, Law had to eat the Devil Fruit and watch his closest companion, Donquixote Rosinante, killed before him. Since then, Law has earned his freedom and his revenge against Doflamingo. Still, his Devil Fruit abilities are expected to play a role in One Piece's story before it concludes, if they haven't already.
Being given the Op-Op fruit entrusted a tragic fate to Law. While author Eiichiro Oda may provide the fan-favorite character with a happy ending, a common narrative principle known as Chekhov's gun says otherwise. The principle insinuates that when crafting a story, each element introduced should have a reason it's introduced. So when an important story element like immortality is brought into the story, it must eventually prove necessary to the over-arching plot, or else it would be a lingering and unsatisfying plot device. However, Egghead Island might have finally seen the Op-Op Fruit's immortality in action.
Only one Devil Fruit of a particular kind can simultaneously exist in One Piece's world. Dr.Vegapunk created a single exception by cloning Kaido's Fish-Fish Fruit, Azure Dragon Model Devil Fruit. Still, normally, the abilities of a Fruit user can only belong to one individual until they pass away. The deceased person's Devil Fruit then returns to the world, in a currently unexplained process, so that another person can eat the fruit and gain its abilities. The Op-Op Fruit and its ultimate sacrificial immortality ability has likely been used before, at least five times.
For hundreds of years, the top ruling class of One Piece's world, the Celestial Dragons, have controlled countless slaves and force-fed them Devil Fruits for their twisted enjoyment. The overly entitled and cruel villains of One Piece are guilty of the worst crimes imaginable. It's not unthinkable to guess that the Celestial Dragons have forced slaves to sacrifice their lives to make themselves immortal, especially those who operate among the World Government's Highest Authority: The Five Elders.
Saint Saturn has proved his standing as one of One Piece's final villains. Abilities like disintegrating anything he touches with a powerful acid and spitting projectiles with the explosive force reminiscent of Oppenheimer's first nuclear bomb test make Saturn arguably more fearsome than Kaido was. However, his destructive capabilities are only part of the intimidation factor the Elders exude, as they have shown capable of tanking Luffy's strongest Gear 5 attacks and can quickly regenerate all the damage they have received so far. It is such a ridiculous feat that it even made Luffy retreat while saying, "Let's hurry! This won't matter...they're immortal!!!"
After the events of chapter #1111, it seems increasingly likely that each of the Five Elders has had the immortal procedure performed on them. Their ability to withstand attacks and regenerate lost limbs is unlike anything the series has seen. Another popular theory suggests that the Elders are not Fruit users but actually Devils or Demons. As displayed in the chapter, their inhuman feats of offense and defense explain how such a force has stayed in power for so long, longer than a typical human's lifespan.
As revealed in One Piece chapter #761, the Op-Op user must have extensive medical science knowledge to use it effectively and sacrifice themselves to use the Immortality Operation. The past users are currently a mystery, but the user before Law was known as a legend in the medical field for curing several deadly diseases. Once they perished, the Op-Op Devil Fruit found its way into the hands of a former Marine and father of X. Drake, Diez Barrels, who lost his life to the Donquixote family. This may be the first time the Fruit has escaped the Celestial Dragon's clutches.
If the Elders had been able to secure the Fruit and know where to find it once it was used to grant immortality to one of them, they could have continuously used the Op-Op Fruit until the it was removed from their control. The process would have taken many years to train each successor and the lives of those successors to accomplish. This seems in line with One Piece's cruel Celestial Dragons and their World Government. However, why only stop with making the Five Elders immortal?
For a good portion of One Piece's epic tale, audiences believed that the Five top-ranking Celestial Dragons were the ones controlling the world and enforcing the dark secrets of its past. That all changes in chapter #908 when the mysterious figure, Imu, appears and sits upon the Empty Throne that rests at the center of the world in the Celestial Dragon's headquarters. The Five Elders all bent a knee and have been more than happy to carry out the commands of the mysterious and terrifying ruler of One Piece's world, someone who is more than likely immortal as well.
With the cruel abuse of innocent lives and overwhelming control of the world's resources, the Celestial Dragons have been able to do almost anything for decades. By using the Op-Op Fruit and sacrificing its users over a long stretch of time, many of the World Government's most respected members could have all been granted immortality. If that is the case, it will be challenging to topple the world order and free its many people from the oppression that Imu and the Five Elders have held for so long. It's setting up a stunning final saga for One Piece's story.

One of the great sporting gestures: How Jared helped Jasmin to Barkley Marathons immortality – Run247.com
Posted: at 4:40 pm
A wonderful sporting gesture from Jared Campbell may just have made Jasmin Paris history-making Barkley Marathons finish a fraction less challenging.
Earlier today Paris became the first woman to ever finish the infamous event, one of the most brutal ultra marathons in the world, which is dubbed The Race That Eats Its Young.
And the margins were tight. She had 60 hours to complete the extreme 100 miles and did it with less than two minutes to spare.
Until this year only 17 people, all men, had previously managed the feat. Its an extreme physical and mental challenge which contains as much elevation as climbing and descending Mount Everest twice from sea level.
But British runner Paris, a mum with two young children who is also a small animal vet and research scientist, had already produced a ground-breaking performance when she became the first female to complete four 20-mile loops at this years race but there was still one to go.
Anyone who gets to that point and only a handful do, some years none go out in alternate clockwise / anti-clockwise order so that they are not running together.
Clockwise is considered the slightly less difficult option but only the first to head out can choose it as did eventual first finisher Ihor Verys in this years race.
Campbell, an American with whats now an unrivalled record at the Barkley, had come into the inter-loop camp almost exactly 10 minutes ahead of Paris and knew that if he stayed in front of her then he too would be going in a clockwise direction.
But as the video below shows he made one of the great sporting gestures by seemingly offering Paris the choice, underlining the incredible camaraderie between the runners. Indeed rather than a battle between each other its more about them versus the race.
And dont for a minute think Campbell didnt have a huge amount at stake himself as he was aiming for what would be an unprecedented fourth finish at the race.
Which he duly achieved.
Absolute legends both and another absorbing chapter in the remarkable folklore of the Barkley Marathons.

Highlights
One Piece is currently in the Final Saga, and fans are incredibly excited to see the major developments that the story has seen over the course of the last few months. Currently, the Egghead Island arc is going on with full intensity, and that means the major villains of the story are finally getting quite a lot of focus. Of course, there is no villain in the story as great as the Five Elders, and these monstrously powerful individuals are at the center of attention.
Among the many incredible abilities of these monsters, the most interesting one is the ability to regenerate and there appears to be no limit to how much they can utilize this power.
Fans got to see the Five Elders in action on Egghead Island quite a lot. From the very beginning of the arc, the Five Elders were heavily involved in the main plot of the story. One of them, Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, was deeply involved in the Egghead Island Arc, as he served the role of one of the primary antagonists. Jaygarcia Saturn was with the Marines, and his goal was to ensure the elimination of Dr. Vegapunk and the successful completion of the mission that was assigned to the Marines.
Saint Jaygarcia Saturn did not initially want to join combat on Egghead, however, with things going south thanks to the involvement of the Straw Hat Pirates, he had to make himself available for support. By utilizing the demonic powers of his Devil Fruit, Saint Saturn was able to summon himself to the island, and right from the get-go, it was clear for the fans to see that he was a monstrously powerful individual. Saturn engaged in combat with Luffy later down the line, and this fight was absolutely mesmerizing for the fans to witness. Clearly, Saturn was able to land some powerful blows on Luffy.
However, these blows were not enough to put Luffy down. In fact, Luffy was the one who was dominant in this fight, and his blows were certainly stronger. In fact, these blows were strong enough to completely crush Saturn in many ways. Much to the surprise of the fans, Saturn was able to regenerate every single time. When Kuma punched Saturn, he was able to regenerate. Later down the line, Luffy landed several powerful blows on Saturn, and once again, he was able to regenerate. No matter how much damage Luffy dished out against Saturn, he was able to regenerate every single time, and this was quite a bizarre ability, as Luffy himself admitted that no matter what he did, Saturn simply kept coming back.
In the climax of the Egghead Island arc, the Five Elders were put on display once more. This time around, however, things were much more dire for the Straw Hat Pirates, as all Five Elders assembled on the island. The goal of the Five Elders was to stop the message of Dr Vegapunk from coming out. For that reason, all five of them showed up, and every single one of them played a major role in their own way. Instance, Saint V. Nusjuro decided to wipe out all the Pacifistas and stop the attack on the Marines. Meanwhile, Saint Marcus Mars decided to fly up to the Labophase, where he would attempt to destroy the room where the message was coming from. Meanwhile, the remaining three elders decided to fight Luffy, and the Straw Hat pirate, thanks to help from Dorry and Brogy, was able to hold their own.
Luffy was able to fight against them to quite a degree, countering every single one of their attacks, however, their generation rate was put on display once again. This was after Saint Saturn attacked Luffy with his powerful venom. Luffy, after using his unique abilities to conjure a bad, struck this venom back at the Elders, and all of them were completely engulfed by this venom. Of course, this attack from Saturn was powerful enough to kill Luffy if it landed. It would also have killed the Giants if it connected. However, Luffy retaliated with the powerful blow and instead, the Elders ended up taking damage. Yet, once again, it was clear to the fans that all of them were regenerating once again.
This time around, Luffy himself emphasized the fact that their regeneration ability is something that he cannot counter and he wondered whether they were immortal, to begin with. According to Dorry and Brogy, there is no race in One Piece that possesses the power of immortality, which would suggest that this power comes from an external source.
It can safely be assumed that the Gorosei truly are immortal in One Piece. Of course, immortality in One Piece is not an alien concept. Fans know that the Perennial Youth Operation grants one eternal youth. However, eternal youth is not exactly the same as immortality. Eternal youth means someone is youthful for their entire lives. However, they can still die. On the other hand, immortality simply means someone cannot die.
These are two entirely different things, and it depends on which way Oda decides to go with immortality in One Piece. If the Five Elders have the power of the Perennial Youth Operation, which can be performed through the Ope Ope no Mi, then, the previous doctors who have existed over the years will most likely have made it so that they become immortal. This is likely why the Ope Ope no Mi is the ultimate Devil Fruit, as it might just be the reason why all the Five Elders, and also Imu themselves, are immortal. This is a very solid idea, and certainly does make quite a lot of sense. Then fans would get a look at what this Devil Fruit is capable of at its full power firsthand.
Another interesting idea pertaining to the immortality of the Five Elders is that they truly are not immortal. It is possible that the Five Elders are simply projections of Imu. Similar to how Vegapunk has decided to split his body up into several satellites, Imu could have done the same. Of course, these bodies would be real, however, they would still be a part of Imu's ability. Since Imu themself is immortal, that would mean that they can pass on this ability to their satellites as well, making all of them immortal as well.
This is quite an interesting idea, and it will also make sense, given that Imu themself is from the Void Century. Fans know for a fact that the Ancient Kingdom that existed in the Void Century was technologically far more advanced than even Vegapunk today. This would explain why the Five Elders have immortality and why none of them can die and how all of them have the power to connect with each other telepathically.
One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1111, is set to be March 24, 2024.

This combines the power of artificial intelligence with human insights – finews.com
Posted: March 22, 2024 at 9:17 am
AI is not only an important thematic investment but is also extensively used by J.P. Morgan Asset Management to identify new investment opportunities, explains Katherine Magee in an exclusive interview with finews.com. This reflects a dynamic combination of AI and human abilities.
Katherine Magee, what are the most important trends you are currently observing that are impacting the investment strategy?
One of our primary strategies focuses on the topic of climate change. Seeing as about 80 percent of greenhouse gas emissions come from energy in industry, agriculture, and transportation, our starting point was to identify potential investment ideas and solutions to these challenges. Thus, an important topic is the investment in the energy transition.
What does this mean exactly?
In the previous year, according to the international energy agency, the world invested more than 1,7 trillion dollars in clean energy. Therefore, we see opportunities not only in companies focusing on renewable energy but also in the entire infrastructure supporting this transition, such for example the support of electric grids. Generally, energy efficiency more broadly is an important subject.
Thematic funds had a difficult year in 2023. Will they have a comeback in 2024?
From a client perspective we saw less focus on thematic investments in 2023. This is partly due to an interest in traditional core strategies and the benefits gained from the growth and strength of the broader equity market. I dont believe thematic investing has gone away but is simply playing a different role in the portfolios of clients.
In your opinion, which thematic investing topics are popular and unpopular currently?
At J.P. Morgan Asset Management we divide thematic investing into three main categories. The first category is disruptive technologies, such as AI, cybersecurity, and robotics. Unsurprisingly this area had a relatively strong performance year, and we believe interest will remain.
The second category is people and demographics, which deal with more social oriented themes such as healthcare. This category was slightly more muted in 2023 but is certainly top-of-mind in the long-term.
And what is the last category?
Lastly, environmental themes, such as the energy transition and biodiversity, form a category. These portfolios were a bit varied. On the one hand, some of the narrower themes, such as companies focusing on renewable energy had a difficult performance year, but also because it is compared to a very strong performance year in 2022. On the other hand, certain companies innovating in technologies to support environmental themes performed quite well.
Financial stocks had a successful year on the stock exchange in 2023. How useful are financial stocks in thematic funds currently?
We do hold financials in many of our thematic portfolios. For instance, we hold them in our carbon transition portfolio, in which we are looking for companies across all sectors that are transitioning their business. Furthermore, we also see financial companies held in more social oriented portfolios, for example when banks are potentially providing lending to underserved areas of the market or populations.
Climate change is one of the most pressing issues worldwide and you are already actively managing a climate change solutions fund. How do you further incorporate risks associated to climate change into your investment strategy?
In some strategies, we lean into innovative companies that are providing solutions to this challenge, such as renewable energy and energy efficient heating and ventilation systems. Furthermore, we also have portfolios where the broad transition to a lower carbon world is the central theme.
How does that work?
Weve brought together inputs from the sustainable investing team, as well as thoughts from our quantitative solutions group to develop an overall framework to evaluate the carbon transition readiness of companies. Therefore, we have a broad and holistic view on both the risks and opportunities that are presented to companies across all sectors when it comes to climate change, which we then use to build portfolios of clients.
How do you approach risk diversification in your investment strategy, such as for example in your carbon transition strategy?
Our carbon transition strategy tracks risk metrics very closely relative to a broad benchmark. Hence, we keep regions and sectors in line with a traditional index and then we want to slightly overweight companies with the best carbon transition scores and underweight companies with weaker scores. Thus, we have a very risk managed approach to portfolio construction that gives clients what looks and feels like a traditional benchmark but also reduces their carbon footprint.
And what other measures do you take?
Moreover, we have a very robust process within J.P. Morgan Asset Management which includes regular reviews with our independent risk teams and investment directors that are stress testing these portfolios to ensure they are delivering the expected outcomes of our clients.
And lastly, how do you integrate artificial intelligence into your investment strategy?
Artificial intelligence has been utilized for managing thematic portfolios since 2019. Furthermore, we have even developed a themebot, which is based on machine-learning and uses natural language processing.
How does thisthemebot work?
Through the themebot our portfolio managers can type in a theme, and it will develop a list of related words and terms. Followingly, it will scan through millions of documents to try to identify how much companies are talking about this specific theme in their earnings transcripts and records. Moreover, it can scan how much revenue is generated by the company in relation to this specific theme.
What do you do with this information then?
We can partner with our team of more than 90 fundamental research analysts to analyze this potential list identified by thethemebot and chose the companies that are most aligned but also the best investment opportunities. I believe this combines the power of artificial intelligence with the power of bottom-up fundamental human insights.
Katherine Magee is an executive director and works as an Investment Specialist in the Asset Management Solutions business at J.P. Morgan Asset Management (JPMAM). Beforehand, she worked in various positions at JPMAM, such as an Associate in the Multi-Asset Solutions and as an Institutional Sales Analyst. Magee obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Economics at Northwestern University and is a CFA Chart holder.

Cohere Targets $5 Billion Valuation for ChatGPT Rival – PYMNTS.com
Posted: at 9:17 am
Canadian artificial intelligence (AI) startupCohereis reportedly in advanced discussions to raise $500 million.
That funding would value the company which makes foundation models to compete with ChatGPT creator OpenAI at $5 billion, Reuters reported Thursday (March 21), citing a source familiar with the matter.
According to that source, Coheres annualized revenue run rate has climbed to $22 million this month from $13 million in December as it debuted its new model Command-R. Cohere was valued at $2.2 billion in June of 2023after raising $220 million.
The Reuters report notes that Cohere has tried to sell its potential to backers by developing enterprise-focused AI models. The company has a partnership with Oracle and also aims to make its models available through other major cloud providers, the report said.
PYMNTS has contacted Cohere for comment but has not yet gotten a reply.
The company was founded by formerGoogleresearchers, among them CEOAidan Gomez, co-author of a landmark paper in AI research. That paper, titled Attention is All You Need, led to significant advancements in the way computers analyze and generate text.
Last year, Gomez wrote a letter to staff criticizingeffective altruism, a movement focused on how to do the most good for humanity, and which has been critical of AI.
Gomez argued the movement has become dogmatic and self-aggrandizing, and warned of people who believe they are uniquely qualified to help others, stating that they may be inclined to take extreme actions to achieve their goals.
The philosophy became famous thanks to one of its most high-profile adherents: FTX founder and convicted cryptocurrency fraudsterSam Bankman-Fried.
Elsewhere on the AI front, PYMNTS this week examinedApplesrecent deal with Google to bring that companys artificial intelligencetech to the iPhone.
Speaking with PYMNTS,Michael Jaconi, CEO of the AI marketing tech companyButton, touched on a few different ways the deal could impact the AI landscape, including the potential for Apple to drive consumer adoption of AI.
They could enable consumer adoption atunparalleled scaleby enabling seamless AI integration into iPhone search and Siri functions, Jaconi said. Unlocking AI-powered app connections that control both your digital and physical world at a pace no other company could rival. With this, Apple would bring the concept that the iPhone is a remote control for daily life closer to reality than ever before.

Artificial intelligence will radically improve health care, but only if managed carefully – The Hill
Posted: at 9:16 am
More important than the speed of bringing artificial intelligence (AI) into widespread use in American health care, is ensuring we do it correctly. To unlock the innovation’s greatest positive impact, assurance of integrity and transparency must take the highest priority. This can be accomplished by applying the principles that guide clinical research, including the respect for the human person, maximization of benefits and avoidance of harms to patients, just distribution of benefits, meaningful informed consent and protection of patient confidential information.
The emergence of artificial intelligence is reminiscent of the great Gold Rush, a frenzied time bursting with unlimited potential yet filled with uncertainty, speculation and unforeseen consequences. The advancement of AI brings medicine to the precipice of truly transformational change that can help reduce existing burdens and inefficiencies while at the same time improve patient care and experience. Examples range from ambient voice transcription tools that enable doctors or nurses to spend more time with their patients to diagnostic devices that detect diabetic retinopathy or colon polyps, with the list growing daily. Its applications are nearly limitless; a new revolution has arrived.
This technology has galvanized the field of health care, but its broad implementation is a road yet to be traveled. It remains to be seen how medical professionals and patients will interact with and utilize artificial intelligence. Unfortunately, the potential for harm has already been demonstrated with examples of substantial algorithmic bias and the use of AI to deny patient care authorizations. Experts use the term human-in-the-loop (HITL) to describe requisite human involvement within the system of automated processes. However, this is inadequate as we must not merely be one dimension of the progressive machine learning system, but atop the hierarchy. The last line bears repeating: Humans must remain atop the hierarchy. We need to control AI, not the other way around.
The complexity of artificial intelligence will require significant bandwidth to properly oversee its application and erect sensible guardrails that enable innovation and at the same protect patients and other key stakeholders. The size and scope of this undertaking far exceeds what can be accomplished by the federal government alone. Unlike the top-down approaches pursued in other parts of the world, we must utilize public-private partnerships to develop these guidelines and guardrails and validate that what is produced is trustworthy and of value. This can be achieved, in part, by creating independent assurance laboratories that evaluate AI models and their applications using commonly accepted principles. We need more than one hen guarding the chicken house.
Avoiding similar missteps that hindered the integration of now mature technologies, such as Electronic Health Records, is paramount. National standards are critical to establish health AI best practices for the use of emerging innovations, and adoption of these benchmarks should be as close to the end beneficiaries as possible. Federal authority has an important role to play here, that of a convener and enabler of creation of these standards. However, their implementation should be deferred as much as possible to the local governance at the health system level with federal authorities intervening only when necessary. Progress will not be free, but we must learn from past mistakes.
In our pursuit of bringing artificial intelligence into mainstream medicine, ethical considerations must maintain supremacy. Patients in rural or low-income communities must have access to the benefits of this technology. Further, it is imperative AI used on or by these communities is as trustworthy as those used by premier health systems. Just as access to health care is not a guarantee of quality, access to artificial intelligence systems will not certify the capacity or reliability of what is available.
Reducing clinician burden, improving patient health and experience, and introducing new, life-saving technologies to the burgeoning world of health care is an exciting endeavor. Traversing these unknowns in a way that circumvents avoidable hazards will allow human intelligence to harness the power of unlimited computations to create better and more affordable care. Practitioners and patients alike eagerly anticipate the powerful capabilities and practical benefits of artificial intelligence in the delivery of health care. It is essential to ensure that its imminent and explosive entrance into care settings is executed judiciously and strategically to maximize its positive impact for all.

Tennessee Makes A.I. an Outlaw to Protect Its Country Music and More – The New York Times

The floor in front of the stage at Roberts Western World, a beloved lower Broadway honky-tonk in Nashville, was packed on Thursday afternoon.
But even with the country music superstar Luke Bryan and multiple other musicians on hand, the center of attention was Gov. Bill Lee and his Elvis Act.
And Mr. Lee did not disappoint, signing into law the Ensuring Likeness, Voice and Image Security Act, a first-in-the-nation bill that aims to protect musicians from artificial intelligence by adding penalties for copying a performers voice without permission.
There are certainly many things that are positive about what A.I. does, Mr. Lee told the crowd. But, he added, when fallen into the hands of bad actors, it can destroy this industry.
The use of A.I. technology and its rapid fire improvement in mimicking public figures has led several legislatures to move to tighten regulations over A.I., particularly when it comes to election ads. The White House late last year imposed a sweeping executive order to push for more guardrails as Congress wrestles with federal regulations.
