This could be a crucial year for the future of sports gambling in Florida.

Lawyers for a group of gambling companies called "West Flagler Associates" filed their final brief yesterday.

They're asking the Florida Supreme Court to rule that the current sports gambling compact with the Seminoles violates the state constitution.

Voters, in 2018, passed Amendment Three, which gives voters the sole power to determine if casino gambling should be allowed in Florida.

Governor Ron DeSantis and the Seminole Tribe reached a deal, though, that legalized online sports gambling by putting the servers on tribal land.

DeSantis' lawyers say Amendment Three doesn't apply to this case because online sports gambling is not casino gambling.

West Flagler argues that voters have the sole power to "authorize casino gambling in the state through another constitutional amendment."

Critics accuse Governor DeSantis of circumventing the constitution.

The state supreme court could decide the case by the end of the year.

Tonight is a good opportunity to bounce back though, which is what they always do. An impressive storyline in this Wolves season is that theyve never lost consecutive games, plus they have the NBAs best average margin and second-best ATS margin after a loss.

That might be why sharp money has been on Minnesota since this line opened, and I still like it here. The Wolves are still a strong ATS team at Target Center, theyll be motivated off Mondays loss, and are at full strength. Theyve already faced the Pelicans three times this season, with the only loss coming in a game Anthony Edwards missed, so I like them to bounce back again as they tend to do.

Bonus Bet (0.75 Unit): Pelicans/Wolves First Half Over 109.5 (-110; Odds via Caesars)

All three meetings this season have gone over this first half total with 116.7 points on average. Both of these teams score at a much higher rate in first halves than second halves, averaging several more PPG before halftime than after. The Wolves also tend to clamp down defensively after half as the leagues best second-half scoring defense, so look for this first half to clear the low total.

NBA (0.5 Unit) Milwaukee Bucks/Indiana Pacers Under 258.5 (-110; Odds via BetMGM): 6:00 PM CT on Bally Sports IN

Taking the under in a Pacers game or a Bucks game is not for the faint of heart. So when these wild offenses square off it can be really scary. But weve already seen these teams play four times this season thanks to the in-season tournament, and they just dont get to this level of scoring. Those meetings have gone 3-1 under this total with 249.5 points on average, and the one over needed a 64-point outburst from Giannis to get there.

All thats needed to fall short of a total like this is a couple of slower minutes scattered throughout the game, and there have been plenty of those in the other meetings. This is just a case of perception driving the total too high, and with Milwaukee potentially missing Khris Middleton tonight Im not seeing enough offense to reach it.

Bonus Bet (0.5 Unit) Giannis Antetokounmpo Over 56.5 Points+Rebounds+Assists (-110; Odds via DraftKings)

I might like the under, but a total this high still creates a fertile environment for player props to go over. Especially with Giannis who has dominated the Pacers this season in all facets of the game. It helps to have two games of 50-plus points against them, but the Greek Freak has also had massive outings in rebounding and assisting against Indiana, resulting in a 64.6 average on this prop. With Middleton possibly out, even more of the load will fall on his shoulders, so expect another big night from Giannis against what is still a poor defensive team.

NBA (0.5 Unit) OKC Thunder/Atlanta Hawks Over 248 (-110; Odds via Caesars): 6:30 PM CT on Bally Sports SE

On the other hand, I just cant quit overs when the Hawks are at home. Games in Atlanta this season are 10-3 to the over with the leagues highest plus/minus to the total. With the Hawks playing some of the NBAs worst defense its no wonder those games tend to erupt, and another should be coming here against one of the top offensive teams in the league.

The Thunder match up very well here as one of the best overall shooting teams, and the leagues best from beyond the arc. The Hawks are allowing visiting teams to shoot 40.4% from deep, second-highest in the league, so OKC will pile up points from downtown. But this is also a back-to-back for the Thunder after a high-scoring game last night, and theyre 3-0 to the over this season on no rest. I expect the pace to be there, and plenty of threes should drop to turn this into a high-scoring game.

NBA (0.5 Unit) Detroit Pistons @ Utah Jazz -8.5 (-110; Odds via Caesars): 8:00 PM CT on Bally Sports Detroit

I hope the Pistons enjoyed that win over the weekend, because another long losing streak is likely in the works. They wasted no time getting back to being the Pistons we all know on Monday, kicking off 2024 with a 23-point loss. Now they have to travel to Utah where the Jazz own the leagues best ATS record and top plus/minus against the number. While its strange to see the Jazz listed as such a heavy favorite, I have to back them here given their success in the Delta Center.

Within their home ATS success is a 3-0 mark as a home favorite with the leagues best average ATS margin as well, so the Jazz always seem to come through. The Pistons are losing their road games by an average 13.6 point margin, already lost at home to a shorthanded Jazz team by 8, and should be in line for another beating tonight.

When it comes to gambling in Idaho, it isn't as simple as you can or can not do it in the state. Like most laws, it is a little more complicated than that. In theConstitution for the State of Idaho, Section 20states that:

(1) Gambling is contrary to public policy and is strictly prohibited except for the following:

a. A state lottery which is authorized by the state if conducted in conformity with enabling legislation; and

b. Pari-mutuel betting if conducted in conformity with enabling legislation; and

c. Bingo and raffle games are operated by qualified charitable organizations in the pursuit of charitable purposes if conducted in conformity with enabling legislation.

This part of the law seems to be pretty cut and dry in terms of stating that gambling is prohibited in Idaho, with these exceptions. The backend of the law is where things are more open to interpretation, and debate.

(2) No activities permitted by subsection (1) shall employ any form of casino gambling including, but not limited to, blackjack, craps, roulette, poker, baccarat, keno, and slot machines, or employ any electronic or electromechanical imitation or simulation of any form of casino gambling.

(3) The legislature shall provide by law penalties for violations of this section.

This makes the law sound like all casino and casino games are prohibited, but as many of us know there is a casino in Blackfoot, Idaho. The law does not mention land, but Native American Reservations commonly do house casinos on the property. To read the full law, you can click on the link above.

While Idaho mostly bans gambling, there are still ways to have some fun, but should Idaho lessen the law? With Jackpot not far away, many residents of the Magic Valley cross the border and have fun on the weekend playing the slots and the tables. While scratchers and lottery tickets are fun, for some they don't fully scratch the gambling itch. Building a few more casinos around the state and legalizing gambling, would help bring more revenue to the state and help grow the economy across the Gem State. It is disappointing to see the hard-earned money of Idaho residents being distributed toanother state when a simple tweak of a law could see Idaho reap the benefits. Look at how fast Idaho Raffle tickets sell and how many people are buying Scratchers and other lottery tickets in the state. There is a need and want for gambling in Idaho, and in 2024 residents should be able to do so without crossing the state line.

With the holidays having passed and manyhaving bought scratchers, for those lucky enough to have scratched off some winnings, make sure to head down and have some fun with them across the border, since you can't do it here. Hopefully, Idaho will change its gambling laws soon, but until it does, we must abide by them and do as little as we can to scratch that gambling itch.

We all know that feeling of driving down the street innocently obeying all the laws and a cop car pulls up behind you and you immediately feel like a felon on the run.

FanDuel online sportsbook APP in #1 in New York State

Mobile Sports betting in New York State has been a success, with more than $33.7 Billion in total wagers being placed since NYS Government approved it in late 2022. And revenues for NYS have totalled $2.9 Billion over the two year period from wagers placed on sports, according to reports from the NYS Gaming Commission.

Anyone over the age of 21 can join download the sports app of one of nine sports betting companies approved in New York. FanDuel has been the most successful, with $13.5 Billion in wagers being placed on their App over two years.

Draftkings was second, with $10.5 Billion, Ceasars at $4.7 Billion, and BetMGM at 2.4 Billion. All of the other approved sports betting companies combined totalled under $2 Billion.

In January of 2022, the first month of legal sports betting in New York State, a total of $1.6 Billion in wagers were placed. One year later, (Jan. 2023) that number rose to $1.8 Billion, and passed the $2 Billion per month mark in October and November of 2023.

New Jerseys sports bets have outpaced New York States, with $44 Billion during the same time period. New Jersey has the highest dollar amount of wagers over the past two years, even more than Nevada, who is third in the country, with $36.8 Billion. Pennsylvania is 5th with $25.6 Billion, and Connecticut is 17th, at $3.4 Billion.

Sports betting experts say that New Yorks first two years of permitting bets and collecting tax revenues have been impressive, and some believe that New York State will overtake Nevada and New Jersey by the end of 2025.

Most wagers are placed online, but can also be placed at most casinos in New York. Sports betting has been legal in NY casinos since 2013, but has exploded since mobile Apps, and advertising from companies like FanDuel and Draftkins, began in January of 2022.

A sports betting casino in New York Citys Times Square, and an ESPN sports betting APP, are also said to be under consideration.

The BetMGM Sportsbook app, is connected to the companys Empire City Casino at MGM Resorts in Yonkers. The BetMGM Sportsbook app allows bettors a variety of options, bonus offers and ease of use, including an Edit MY Bet Feature, which allows you to add, change and drop bets for games already in play.

MGM recently released its vision for an upgraded and expanded MGM Empire City in Yonkers, if the company is granted a full-scale commercial casino license by the state. The next frontier of online gambling will be the legalization of online gaming, or igaming in New York State.

A group called BetonNY.com has begun their campaign to inform New Yorkers about the tax revenue possibliltiies in the Governor and State legislature approve iGaming, which has already been approved in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Since sports betting became legal in Kentucky on Sept. 7, calls to the state problem-gambling hotline have nearly tripled, one of the states few problem-gambling counselors told June Leffler for KETs Kentucky Edition Wednesday.

Since December of 22 to 23, weve seen almost a thrfee-fold increase in calls, said Lionel Phelps of River Valley Behavioral Health in Owensboro.

Owensboro has two certified gambling counselors, but the state as a whole has only seven.

There are none in Lexington, theres none in Northern Kentucky, theres none in Bowling Green, and theres none in Paducah, but theres gambling all over the state, Kentucky Council on Problem Gambling Executive Director Mike Stone told Leffer. It is as much a geographic concern as it is a numerical concern. Theres one counselor in Eastern Kentucky.

When the General Assembly approved sports betting, it set up the states first problem-gambling fund, supplied by 2.5% of the states revenue from sports betting. That is projected to be about $1.2 million a year, but the money wont be available until well into 2024, said Stone.

Meanwhile, Stone said he is using gaming-industry contributions to recruit and train more counselors because we anticipate a wave of problem gambling surfacing in 2024, with the advent of the sports betting in the state.

Sports betting is available online, and that aspect is likely expanding how people bet, Leffler reports. At the Super Bowl, the betting will start with the coin toss, said Ronsolyn Clark, a counselor at Boulware Mission, an Owensboro residential program for men with drug and alcohol problems.

Clark said addiction to gambling is similar to drug addiction, in which people with the disorder get a high from the brains release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that acts like a hormone. The brain doesnt see it really much differently than drugs, as far as the dopamine it releases into the bloodstream, she said.

She said gambling disorder has the highest rate of suicide among all mental illnesses: One in five individuals with a gambling problem will attempt or complete suicide.

The National Council on Problem Gambling estimates that 1% of U.S. adults have a gambling disorder, and 2-3% have a gambling problem, Leffler reports: The consequences of problem gambling are arguably as devastating as those from a substance-use disorder.

The states problem-gambling hotline is 1-800-GAMBLER, answered by people in Kentucky around the clock, Leffler reports.

High inflation in recent years through 2023 hasn't stopped two decades of fairly steady growth in spending on lottery and casino gambling, except for a sharp dip for casinos at the height of the pandemic restrictions. But casino gambling spending growth is more robust. American spending on gambling at casinos has grown 61% since 2000adjusted for inflationcompared to 42% growth in lottery spending.

However, the chances of winning the jackpot on the popular Megabucks slot machines, which often make the news when they periodically create new millionaires, are oft-discussed in gaming circles, with estimates as high as 1 in 50 million.

Gambling gains come as Americans' attitudes have shifted, with a record of nearly 70% deeming it a "morally acceptable" activity in a 2018 Gallup poll. However, underlying factors that are less obvious may contribute to higher spending on casino gambling.

Casinos are meticulously designed to keep people playing, with maximum comfort for guests and clear views of other games to make their way to next. Of course, the incentive of receiving free drinks helps keep some people betting. There's also some indication among gambling researchers that game machine lights and celebratory sounds, along with newer technologies such as surround sound and small vibrations to the player's chair, draw people into an immersive world that could distract them from risky behavior.

What's more, compared with the lottery where a player may be more likely to buy a set number of Powerball or scratch-off tickets and be done until the next attempt at a big jackpot, online betting platforms are easily accessible, engross players, and make spending more money simple.

Israel is gambling that its assassination of senior Hamas official Saleh Al Arouri in Beirut will not lead to a major escalation in its conflict with Hezbollah and Iran, analysts told The National.

The killing of Mr Arouri, who was deputy head of Hamas's political bureau, in a drone attack is seen as a significant escalation and a major break of the informal rules of engagement between Israel and Hezbollah.

Israel may have felt emboldened to carry out the strike its first in Beirut since 2006 by the relative restraint shown by Hezbollah and Iran since the outbreak of cross-border fighting between Israeli forces and the Iran-backed group on October 8.

The government of Israel recognises Irans strategy and its limitations, said Imad Salamey, an associate professor of political science and international affairs at the Lebanese American University in Beirut.

Therefore Israel is more willing to escalate in terms of confrontation because they know its unlikely to lead to an open confrontation either on the [Lebanese] front or in the region.

Irans proxies, including Hezbollah, have rallied to militarily support their ally Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, after the group's attack on Israel October 7.

The Lebanese Hezbollah group has led the fight from its homeland and in some cases Syria where it has waged a contained border conflict with the stated aim of pressuring and deterring Israel from its assault on the besieged Gaza Strip.

The conflict in Lebanon has so far claimed more than 160 lives, including at least 19 civilians, although the vast majority of those killed have been Hezbollah militants and allied fighters. On the Israeli side, the death toll stands at nine soldiers and five civilians.

But the Iran-backed group has stopped short of initiating full-scale war, remaining restrained despite Israels increasingly aggressive responses on Lebanon. So, too, have other Iran-backed groups such as Yemens Houthis and Iraqs Kataib Hezbollah.

Israel's decision to hit Beirut puts Hezbollah in a difficult position after it publicly declared it would not tolerate any Israeli assassinations in Lebanon.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah warned in a televised speech last year that targeted assassinations by Israel in Lebanon would not be tolerated".

"We will not allow Lebanon to become a new field of assassinations for Israel, he said.

And in another speech in November, Mr Nasrallah warned Israel against making a mistake which would exact a price you cant even imagine.

But despite Mr Nasrallahs rhetoric, Hezbollah has so far shown little desire to trigger a major war with Israel since it became active on the Lebanese front in support of Hamas. Not the civilian deaths, nor the major destruction in parts of southern Lebanon close to the border, nor the triple-digit Hezbollah death toll has been enough to elicit a strong response.

It remains to be seen what form Hezbollahs and Irans retaliation will take.

In a statement on Tuesday evening, Hezbollah called the killing of Mr Arouri a serious assault on Lebanon, its people, its security, its sovereignty, and its resistance and promised the "crimes will not pass without response and punishment".

While the strike is an escalation, Israel is gambling that Iran will maintain its strategy of avoiding a major war, despite being under pressure to save face, experts say.

Mohanad Hage Ali, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Middle East Centre, a Beirut-based think tank, said Mr Al Arouris assassination was a significant and direct strike against the first brass of Hamas.

But the Iranian strategy is to play a secondary support role in this conflict," he added.

"It would be difficult to see them turn this into a major war between Hezbollah and Israel.

Still, Iran and proxies will try to calibrate the response to save face.

A veteran Palestinian official in Gaza who handles communications between the Palestinian Authority and various factions told The National: "Israel is gambling".

He added Israel was "edging towards a bigger war with Hezbollah and telling the US it is not afraid to expand the war, even without Washington standing by its side".

"It is logical to assume that this gamble is very dangerous and has many consequences."

But the group has attempted to walk the fine line between mid-intensity conflict and full-scale war with Israel.

Israel recognises that Iran doesnt want regional war, nor does it want an open confrontation on any of its fronts where allies exist, Mr Salamey said. Instead it wants to maintain asymmetrical long-term warfare where Iran can negotiate political concessions through its proxies.

Iran-backed militant groups across the Middle East including the Houthis in Yemen and Shiite militias in Syria and Iraq have united to support their ally Hamas in Gaza and pressure Israel.

Israel is under pressure to showcase a victory in the war in Gaza. Since Hamas killed 1,200 people on October 7, more than 174 Israeli soldiers have been killed in Gaza, and tens of thousands of civilians have been displaced from northern Israel due to the threat from Hezbollah.

Israel has so far failed in its stated aim of eradicating Hamas, despite Gaza's Ministry of Health reporting the deaths of more than 22,300 people in the enclave, mostly civilians.

According to Mr Salamey, Hamas is persisting with operations in Gaza and has retained logistical capabilities. The group has continued to launch missiles into Israel, inflict serious harm on the Israeli military in Gaza daily and, most importantly, "theyve made the Israeli invasion extremely costly for the Israelis on all levels: morally, politically, internationally and economically".

The cost of Israel sustaining this war is not easy. Hamas has adapted to the situation and continued its operations, Mr Salamey said.

Israel is desperate to showcase some kind of tangible victory. And it is crossing red lines and taking a risk of a major escalation just to make some kind of win, which [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu and his government can sell domestically and internationally.

Theres no way to avoid it, New Years resolutions are deeply entrenched in society. Whether we see them as an opportunity to realign our personal and professional goals or a pointless ritual used to set ourselves up for failure, it does offer us a chance to consider what we want the year ahead to look like.

Its easy to get caught up in our own bubble but remembering not to get lost in the tunnel vision, even if it feels productive at the time, is essential and serves as a useful reminder to all.

On an industry level, gambling organisations have become increasingly connected with the communities around them, CSR and responsible gaming. In 2024, we hope to see more of the same and that these are all motivated by genuine reasons, rather than just tick-box compliance.

Overpromising

One New Years tendency the industry must avoid is overpromising. Making grand, sweeping statements at the beginning of the year can be demotivating and leaves the smaller victories uncelebrated. Year after year, many of us commit to resolutions that are often unrealistic in scale or timeframe, whether they may be business-related or more personal goals. We are by no means encouraging you to abandon ambition, but being reasonable with what we can achieve is a skill, and often leads to more long-term successes. Just imagine a boardroom where over-ambitious targets have hampered financial progress from day one; it's not a place any executive wants to find themselves in.

Doom scrolling

Most of us already spend too much time staring at the screen, whether at work, at home or on the go. Between the TV, computers, gaming, connecting with friends via text, or even reading the news, most of these events take place on the big or small screen. While screen time can be productive, and is often essential when we are trying to achieve goals at work, we encourage you to think of times when your screen usage has been less than productive. Swap out the endless scrolling on social media that consumes your morning commute or bedtime routine and try something else a book, perhaps? If fiction isnt your thing, grab a copy of a book about someone who inspires you, or even one to help you achieve your business goals. Try listening more, too, not just to audiobooks or podcasts (though both are good) but to your colleagues or employees. MGM China President and COO Hubert Wang told us last year that listening is one of the most important skills when running his company.

Bad Habits

Theres never a bad time to live a cleaner lifestyle, but the New Year offers us all the perfect chance to start writing on a fresh page. Whether its regulating your coffee intake, welcoming more greens into your life or leaving behind nicotine habits that do nothing but slow down your day and your health theres no harm in trying to live a more balanced lifestyle.

Clean living benefits everyone, whether thats people or businesses. Heading into 2024, the question arises as to whether the gambling industry can leave behind compliance issues and accusations of malpractice. 2023 saw a trail of legal fines stain the industry, with Entain ordered to pay 585m ($737.4m) after a bribery investigation and Australian operator Crown Resorts hit with a AU$450m (US$294m) fee amid accusations of allowing illegal gambling. Gambling Insider hopes the gambling industry can wipe the slate clean and enter 2024 with the best of intentions.

Two days after Christmas, San Jose police raided a nondescript one-story commercial building in the Berryessa neighborhood of East San Jose and broke up a brothel and gambling operation, seizing drugs, weapons, ammunition and cash, freeing sex workers and arresting three men and two women accused of running the illegal operations.

During the month of December, San Jose Special Operations METRO Unit Officers developed information of a casino operating at a commercial property located in the 2400 block of Autumnvale Drive, according to a police report released today.

During the investigation, police discovered that several units in the building were being operated as an illegal gambling establishment where drug sales and prostitution activities were occurring. Officers obtained a search warrant for the property.

On Dec. 27, with the assistance of the Violent Crimes Enforcement Team, Special Operations and the Human Trafficking Task Force, officers served the warrant and arrested the five suspects: Saolepea Liu, 42, of Antioch; Nido Nguyen, 35, of San Jose; Phuong Nguyen, 44, of San Jose; Windie Pratt, 41, of San Jose, and Anai Garcia, 24, of San Jose.

During the search, officers located and seized 33 firearms (including assault weapons), 150,000 rounds of ammunition, 500 pounds of marijuana and approximately $20,000 in cash. Police said adult female survivors employed at the brothel were also located and provided resources, assistance, and information about their rights.

The five suspects were booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for various warrants and multiple felony charges. This investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information about this case or similar cases is asked to contact Officer Ells #4592 of the San Jos Police METRO Unit via email [emailprotected].
