Artificial intelligence (AI) startupHugging Facehas raised $235 million in a Series D funding round at a $4.5 billion valuation.

The new investors that participated in the round includeSalesforce Ventures, Google, Amazon, Nvidia, AMD, Intel, Qualcomm Ventures, IBM and Sound Ventures, Hugging Face Co-founder and CEO Clem Delanguesaid in a Thursday (Nov. 24)poston LinkedIn.

These partners alone shared over 1,000 open models and datasets and have over 10,000 users on Hugging Face already, Delangue said in the post. It takes a village to democratize good machine learning with open-source and were just getting started.

In total, Hugging Face has more than 1 million models, datasets and apps on its platform, Delangue added in the post.

Delangue said thecapitalwill primarily be used to attract top talent, ensuring the company remains competitive in the evolving AI space, CNBC reported Thursday. The investment surge reflects the growing interest of both large corporations and venture capitalists in the AI boom, which was ignited last year with the release ofMicrosoft-backedOpenAIsChatGPTchatbot.

What sets Hugging Face apart from other highly valued AI startups is its collaborative approach to building AI, according to the report. Unlike companies that guard their AI models and charge customers for access, Hugging Face provides a platform where developers can freely share code, models and datasets.

Additionally, the company offers developer tools to facilitate the implementation of open-source AI models, the report said. Hugging Faces website allows users to upload models and weights. It also develops software tools called libraries that aid in model implementation, dataset cleaning and performance evaluation.

The companys platform, similar in concept to code-repositoryGitHub, has gained popularity due to its belief that most AI companies will want to develop their own models or technology, per the report. Hugging Face aims to provide the necessary tools for these developers to succeed.

Delangue said per the report he hopes that AI builders will rely on Hugging Faces platform extensively, and this is one of the reasons why major companies are investing in the startup.

The news comes about two weeks after it was reported thatHive AIis working to raise $200 million in afunding round, with a valuation of up to $4 billion. Hive AI uses AI to moderate digital content.

U.S.-based tech giant Meta (formerly Facebook) recently visited South Korea to discuss next-generation DRAM with SK hynix. Nvidia, an AI semiconductor company, is also planning a visit soon.

According to industry sources on Aug. 27, Meta officials visited the SK hynix headquarters in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, on Aug. 24. During their visit, they inspected DDR5, high bandwidth memory (HBM) production facilities, and extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) at the Icheon campus and conducted a quality audit of DDR5.

Meta is one of SK hynixs major clients, procuring enterprise solid state drives (SSDs) and server DRAM for data center construction and expansion. Meta, investing heavily in AI servers, has also reportedly requested additional supplies of high-performance, high-efficiency DDR5 server DRAM from SK hynix.

The industry is rife with speculation that the two companies discussed DDR5 supply during their meeting at the Icheon plant. The server DRAM is currently undergoing a rapid generational shift from DDR4 to DDR5 due to increasing AI demand. Earlier, SK hynix developed a 10-nanometer 4th generation (1a) DDR5 and, in January this year, achieved the worlds first compatibility certification with Intels new Sapphire Rapids CPU, thereby pioneering a new server memory market.

Nvidia is also expected to visit SK hynixs Icheon campus this week. Its anticipated that Nvidia will review SK hynixs 5th generation HBM, the HBM3E production line. Given Nvidias known consideration to quadruple the production of its latest AI GPU, H100, discussions regarding additional HBM supplies are expected.

HBM is a product that enhances data processing speeds by vertically connecting multiple types of DRAM and is extensively equipped with GPUs used in AI chips. Currently, NVIDIA dominates more than 80% of the global GPU market.

SK hynix has had a collaborative relationship with Nvidia since the inception of the HBM market. Recently, SK hynix developed a new high-performance DRAM product for AI, HBM3E, and began supplying samples to Nvidia.

Meanwhile, SK hynix, which recorded a business loss of 6 trillion won in the first half of this year, is creating a new strategy to improve performance through next-gen DRAM. Visible results are gradually emerging. According to market research firm TrendForce, SK hynix, which had slipped to third place in the global DRAM market in the previous quarter, reclaimed the second spot this quarter, powered by an increase in shipments of next-gen DRAM like DDR5 and HBM. Notably, DRAM sales in the second quarter surged by 48.9%, amounting to US$3.443 billion, up from US$2.312 billion the previous quarter.

Germany plans to almost double its public funding for artificial intelligence research to nearly a billion euros over the next two years, as it attempts to close a skills gap with sector leaders China and the United States. Reuters reports: The target, announced by research minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger on Wednesday, is modest compared with the $3.3 billion that the U.S. government spent on AI research in 2022 according to a Stanford University report. The AI push comes as Germany attempts to turn around its economy from a recession while the country's key autos and chemicals industries face stiff competition from upstart electric-vehicle makers and high energy costs.

Germany envisages creating 150 new university labs for AI research, expanding data centres and making accessible the kind of complex public data sets from which AI techniques can tease out new insights: a major undertaking in a country where cash transactions are common and the fax is not yet extinct. It is dwarfed by private AI spending in the U.S., which reached $47.4 billion in 2022, almost double Europe's total spend, and well ahead of China's $13.4 billion, the Stanford report found.

But Stark-Watzinger said that Europe's emerging regulatory framework, which places greater weight on privacy and personal safety than those in other regions, could attract players to Germany, as could cooperation within the European Union. "We have AI that is explainable, trustworthy and transparent," she said. "That's a competitive advantage." Simpler regulations would promote private research spending, she added.
