ERP, Cloud Computing And Digital Transformation – CIOReview

What is an ERP? Well ERP is stands for Enterprise Resource Planning. ERP is a software system designed to integrate and manage various business processes within an organization. It provides a centralized platform for companies to streamline operations, improve efficiency, and enhance decision-making. ERP can be considered as complete and important integrated business system that is recommended to be implemented in every organization from small, medium up to enterprise level. ERP is also considered as an important and recommended management information system that integrates flow and process of production, planning, inventory, sales, marketing, human resources, purchasing and the last part is finance and accounting. Now lets head back to see the history of ERP and the evolution itself, as follows
1960s-1980s (MRP & MRP version 2)
Material Requirement Planning or so call MRP appear in the 1960s as method to manage manufacturing process and inventory control. It is strictly focused on calculating material requirements based on production schedules. Then in the 1980s MRP developed into Manufacturing Requirement Planning or we call it MRP version 2 and involved more functions such as capacity planning, scheduling, and financial management.
1990s (First ERP System)
The pronouncement of Enterprise Resource Planning was coined in the early 1990s to describe software systems that integrated with various organizational functions. The first ERP systems were developed by software companies like SAP, Oracle, and Baan, offering modules to manage different areas such as finance, human resources, manufacturing, and distribution.
1990s-2000s (Expansion and Integration)
Early 1990s are the time where a lot companies started adopting ERP systems as it gained more popularity and was also based on comprehensive benefits and features. ERP systems began to expand and started to include additional modules like customer relationship management (CRM), supply chain management (SCM), and business intelligence (BI), providing end-to-end solutions for organizations. To further enhance their capabilities, ERP systems also started integrating other technologies such as e-commerce platforms and internet. This was also the time when all ERP systems were still installed on local server (on-premises) at every server room on each organizations.
Cloud

Short brief about Cloud itself, Cloud or as we used to call, Cloud computing refers to the delivery of computing services over the internet on a pay-per-use basis. Instead of relying on local infrastructure and servers, cloud computing allows users to access and utilize computing resources, such as storage, processing power, and software applications, from remote data centers.
Cloud computing provides several advantages over traditional, on-premises infrastructure.
1. Cloud provides scalability and allowing organizations to easily scale up or down their computing resources based on demand. This flexibility is particularly beneficial for businesses with fluctuating resource needs.
2. Cloud computing eliminates the need for upfront infrastructure investments and reduces maintenance costs since the responsibility for managing hardware and software infrastructure lies with the cloud service provider.
3. It enables remote access to data and applications, facilitating collaboration and mobility.
4. It also provides us with instituted multiple redundancies to make sure that if something went bad then we still had a backup as a part of disaster recovery plan and can be reactivated within hours or even minutes.
For Cloud computing services, there are 3 (Three) types of services:
1. IaaS : Infrastructure as a Service
2. PaaS : Platform as a Service
3. SaaS : Software as a Service

How is ERP and Cloud Related?
With the advancement of cloud computing technology, ERP systems began shifting to cloud-based models, offering greater scalability, flexibility, and accessibility. Starting from 2010s to present, there has been a significant shift towards cloud-based ERP systems, often referred to as ERP in the cloud or cloud ERP.
Cloud-based ERP solutions offer several advantages over traditional on-premises ERP systems, including:
Lower upfront costs: Cloud ERP eliminates the need for extensive hardware investments and reduces upfront software licensing costs.
Scalability: Cloud ERP systems can easily scale up or down based on the organization's needs, allowing for flexibility and accommodating business growth.
Accessibility: Cloud ERP enables users to access the system and data from anywhere, promoting remote work, collaboration, and mobility.

The rise of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) providers, such as Oracle NetSuite, Infor Cloudsuite, Microsoft Dynamics, SAP Hana and others ERP products brand offered ERP functionality through subscription-based models, making it more affordable for small and medium-sized businesses.

Cloud ERP and Digital Transformation

UMD Smith Offers New January Start Date for MS in Information … – Newswise

Newswise The University of Marylands Robert H. Smith School of Business is adding a January 2024 cohort start date for its Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS). The update comes as the school designates focus areas including artificial intelligence, cloud computing and emerging technologies in this STEM-designated, in-person program.
The additional start date is ideal for candidates who apply after earning a three-year or a four-year undergraduate degree and those seeking more scheduling flexibility, says Smith Associate Dean of MS Programs Emanuel Zur.
Application deadlines for the added January start date in the 30-credit program are Sept. 1 and 29, Oct. 15 and Dec. 15. (Go to Smiths Business Masters Admissions website.)
The focus areas, Zur says, provide students with a more-specialized education within the information systems field, targeting multiple skills relevant to specific job roles.
Artificial intelligence
This focus area provides a comprehensive understanding of Artificial Intelligence tools, methods and algorithms used to create intelligent systems to solve business problems. The curriculum also will work to address AIs ethical impacts on society and is relevant to such job titles as knowledge engineer, knowledge manager and machine learning engineer. The curriculum also emphasizes crafting data strategies, building pipelines, visualizing data, and using predictive analytics in real-life business situations. This area is designed for data scientists, business intelligence developers, data analysts and data engineers.
Cloud computing
The curriculum in this focus area addresses Cloud Computing in designing and managing cloud-based platforms and tech infrastructures. Participants will study the economics of cloud deployments, manage the complexities involved in migration initiatives and experience using cloud-based technology stacks all applicable to such roles as solution engineer, cloud architect and cloud engineer.
Emerging technologies
The Emerging Technologies focus area addresses the understanding, evaluating and applying key information systems technologies. Students will practice applying Web3, Blockchain, IoT and other technologies to everyday work in roles like solution architect, technology consultant and solutions engineer.
These focus areas, combined with experiential learning courses, case competitions and industry simulations, ensure that students have the skills and capacity to lead, manage, design and implement solutions to complex business problems using contemporary information technologies, says MSIS Academic Director and Clinical Professor Tej Anand. The updated curriculum increases the challenge and reward for students to think critically about solutions required for our rapidly changing business and technology environment.
Anand directs the program with decades of industry experience, including in AI and data research and product development for the likes of Philips Research Laboratories, A. C. Nielsen and NCR/Teradata and as a senior business-technology executive in companies such as Golden Books, CA Technologies. Medco Health Solutions and CareCentrix.
Anand exemplifies the MSIS programs top-tier research- and industry-active faculty, who collaborate with the schools MSIS Advisory Council of industry leaders and experts to bring experiential learning and insight and expand internship and job opportunities for the students, says Smith Dean Prabhudev Konana. This works to ensure that its not only about developing trade skills through a stellar curriculum, but its also about developing independent thinkers with deep skills relevant for immediate needs of business and developing the students for long term success.

Reports: Colts considering placing Jonathan Taylor on NFI list, which could negate his 2023 salary – Yahoo Sports

In a sign of further escalating tensions, the Indianapolis Colts are reportedly considering placing running back Jonathan Taylor on the non-football injury list, a move that would allow them to withhold his entire 2023 salary.
Colts insider Mike Chappell reported the news on Sunday, adding that Taylor is dealing with a back injury from working out in Arizona during the offseason. ESPN's Stephen Holder reported that Taylor has complained of back pain that the team deems pre-existing from prior to training camp.
Taylor is recovering from offseason ankle surgery and is already on the physically unable to play (PUP) list. Per Holder, the team wasn't aware of any back issues until Taylor reported to training camp last Tuesday.
Players on the PUP list are due their salary. Players on the NFI list are not, though teams can negotiate to pay players if they choose.
Taylor denied on Sunday evening, via the social media platform X, that he'd experienced or reported any back pain.
Taylor a 2021 All-Pro and NFL rushing champion is due $4.3 million this season on the final year of his four-year rookie contract. He's seeking a long-term extension that would pay him considerably more annually. The Colts have declined to offer him an extension. At worst if he's healthy, he projects to secure a one-year franchise tag tender next season that would more than double his 2023 salary.
The 2023 franchise tag tender for running backs is $10.1 million. But if he lands on the NFI list and remains there all season, his $4.3 million 2023 salary would toll for next year.
Taylor has been vocal this offseason about running back pay and his desire for a new contract, leading to a contentious public back-and-forth involving his agent Malki Kawa and Colts owner Jim Irsay. Taylor joined a chorus of disgruntled high-profile running backs lamenting the state of the position's pay after Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs and Tony Pollard failed to secure long-term extensions this offseason.
On Wednesday, Irsay tweeted that running backs seeking new negotiations are doing so in "bad faith" at the advice of their agents.
Kawa fired back on Twitter that Irsay is not paying the Colts' "top offensive player."
Since then, Irsay and Taylor sat down for a meeting that reportedly involved Taylor requesting a trade. Irsay denied that request and said that Taylor won't be traded in the future. Now the Colts are reportedly considering a transaction that would prevent Taylor from receiving a paycheck for the 2023 season.

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh and the NCAA are working toward a negotiated resolution that is expected to see him suspended four games this season in penalties stemming from alleged false statements he originally made to investigators, sources tell Yahoo Sports.
The agreement is an initial version of the negotiated resolution and is not yet finalized. The resolution must now be approved by the NCAA Committee on Infractions, which could take several days if not weeks. The committee has authority to adjust penalties.
Michigans first four games are all at home, with three against teams from the Group of Five (East Carolina, UNLV and Bowling Green). On Sept. 23, Michigan hosts a Rutgers team that finished 4-8 last season. The Wolverines, who return several key major pieces from the team that finished 13-1 a season ago, are expected to begin the year inside the top five of the preseason rankings.
Harbaughs impending suspension is centered on an NCAA investigation into recruiting violations committed by he and Wolverines staff members. The NCAA enforcement staff alleged that Harbaugh was dishonest about the recruiting violations in his initial meeting with investigators. A quick resolution broke down in January after Harbaugh refused to admit that he lied to NCAA staff. The 59-year-old coach has maintained he didnt recall the events when first speaking with investigators but that he was never purposefully dishonest.
The University of Michigan did not immediately respond when asked for comment.
A previous Harbaugh staff member did not escape unscathed. Former defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, now the defensive coordinator for Harbaughs brother John at the Baltimore Ravens, is expected to receive a one-year show-cause penalty. Show-cause penalties make it more difficult for coaches to land jobs in college athletics.
Two current Michigan assistants are also expected to receive sanctions, including offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore and tight ends coach Grant Newsome.
For Harbaugh, the negotiated resolution is a signal that the coach acknowledged some sort of dishonesty. The NCAA considers lying to investigators as a Level I violation, the most serious on the organizations scale. A Level I violation could carry with it a six-game suspension and significant recruiting restrictions, according to NCAA statutes.
Harbaughs alleged initial cover-up was worse than the crime itself from the NCAA's perspective. In a notice of allegations sent to Michigan last year, the association cited four Level II violations, including meeting with two recruits during a COVID-19 dead period, texting a recruit outside of an allowable time period, having analysts perform on-field coaching duties during practice and having coaches watching players work out via Zoom.
Harbaugh eventually acknowledged that the program committed the Level II violations but refused to sign any document or publicly state that he was ever untruthful with the enforcement staff.
The NCAA defines Level II violations as resulting in less than a substantial or extensive recruiting, competitive or other advantage. It further calls them systemic violations that do not amount to lack of institutional control. Punishments are usually minor.
However, lying to investigators is thought of as a much more serious matter. A resolution between the NCAA and Harbaugh seemed distant a few months ago. During two meetings in January, the NCAA and Harbaugh held firm and refused to back down from their positions. The NCAA said the coach lied. The coach said he merely forgot otherwise insignificant actions. An impasse resulted.
All of it occurred during an eventful time for the football program. The Wolverines lost to TCU on New Years Eve in the semifinals of the College Football Playoff. It capped a 13-win season that saw the Wolverines win the Big Ten and defeat Ohio State for the second consecutive year.
Within days, Harbaughs name emerged again for various NFL head coaching openings, including the Denver Broncos, with whom he spoke. Then news broke of the NCAA infractions case and Harbaugh remained coy about returning to his alma mater for a ninth season.
Later in January, Harbaugh and the university stated he would be back for the 2023 season, but the looming NCAA case remained.

Oregon coach Dan Lanning slams Colorado after move to Big 12: I dont remember them winning anything – Yahoo Sports

Colorado is headed back to the Big 12 conference next summer, and Oregon football coach Dan Lanning sounds completely unbothered by the move.
Lanning took a very clear, yet accurate, shot at the Buffaloes on Monday.
Not a big reaction, Lanning said when asked about Colorados plans to return to the Big 12.
"I'm trying to remember what they won to affect this conference and I don't remember. Do you remember them winning anything? I don't remember them winning anything."
Though thats harsh, he's not wrong.
Colorado has had just a single winning season since joining the Pac-12 in 2011. Outside of their 10-4 finish in 2016, in which they won the Pac-12 South Division, the Buffaloes never won more than three conference games in a single season. They went 0-9 in conference play in 2014, and have four seasons in which they won just a single Pac-12 game. Deion Sanders is Colorados fifth head coach since it moved to the Pac-12.
Based on that, its easy to see why Lanning and Oregon wouldnt care much about the Buffaloes plans.
Colorado officially voted to move back to the Big 12 last week. The Buffaloes decision to leave followed USC and UCLA opting to join the Big Ten next season. That will leave the Pac-12 with just nine teams. The Pac-12 still has yet to announce plans for a new media rights agreement thats reportedly coming later this week something that Colorado athletic director Rick George said played a part in their decision to leave.
The Pac-12 is clearly not in a good place, and it feels like it could fall apart at any moment. Arizona is rumored to be considering a jump to the Big 12, which would only complicate things even further for Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff.
But for now, at least publicly, Lanning and Oregon are fine with Colorado leaving the conference.
