New Black Lives Matter tax documents show foundation is tightening its belt, has $30M in assets – Yahoo! Voices
Posted: May 30, 2023 at 12:10 am
NEW YORK (AP) A national Black Lives Matter nonprofit, whose philanthropic fortunes grew almost overnight during historic racial justice protests three years ago, raised just over $9 million in its last fiscal year, new IRS tax filings show.
Thats significantly less than the $79 million in revenue reported in a previous tax filing of Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation Inc. On Friday, the foundation said it expected that would be the case, given the unique factors surrounding the public response to the murder of George Floyd in 2020.
A 60-page filing, submitted by the organization earlier this month, shows the foundation spent more money than it earned in its last fiscal year, from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022. It ended the year with roughly $30 million in assets, down from the $42 million in assets reported in its filing the previous year.
The BLM nonprofit had raised more than $90 million in the first year that it was a tax-exempt organization, coinciding with the wave of protests over police brutality in the summer of 2020. But with the racial justice fundraising environment quickly returning to norms, the new tax filings show the organization cut operating expenses by nearly 55%.
Cicley Gay, board chair for the foundation, said the belt-tightening was part of an effort to demonstrate that its stewards have been responsible, proactive decision-makers of the peoples donations.
We are building an institution to fight white supremacy and reach Black liberation, Gay said in a statement about the tax filings. Every dollar we spend is in order to reach that goal.
The foundation said it would post the new financial documents to a transparency center on its official website.
Last year, the nonprofit gave more than $4 million in grants to Black-led grassroots organizations, including organizations founded by the families of police brutality victims, whose names rally the larger movement. Nearly $26 million had gone to Black organizations and families during the foundations 2020-2021 fiscal year.
Story continues
The tax documents also show the foundation continued its business relationship with security contractor Paul Cullors, the brother of BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullors, who resigned as foundation director in 2021. Although Patrisse has not been involved in the day-to-day running of the organization for two and a half years, she and, by extension, the organization continue to face accusations of misusing BLM donations from movement critics and in right-leaning media outlets. The allegations are unproven.
Shalomyah Bowers, another foundation board member, said an independent auditor hired by the foundation judged the nonprofit to be in good fiscal standing. The auditor found that our financial outlook is healthy, there is no fraud or abuse within the organization, said Bowers, whose outside firm received the lions share of the BLM foundations spending on consultants in the 2020-2021 fiscal year.
Last summer, a group of local chapters and activists known as BLM Grassroots filed a lawsuit in a California Superior Court against Bowers and the foundation. The suit alleges that he and his consulting firm broke an agreement to relinquish control of BLMs digital presence and its finances to the grassroots organizers of BLM.
Bowers has called the allegations frivolous and untrue.
Both sides await a judges ruling on BLM Grassroots suit, on which arguments were heard early this spring.

Study on Black Lives Matter protests provides insight into the link between coalitional affiliation and moral elevation – PsyPost
Posted: at 12:10 am
New research sheds light on the role of coalitional affiliation in shaping emotional responses to intergroup conflicts. The findings, published in Royal Society Open Science, indicate that political orientation modulates whether people feel inspired and uplifted after watching a video of large-scale protests demanding racial equity in policing.
The authors behind the new study sought to investigate how coalitional affiliation influenced experiences of moral elevation in the context of a prominent and politically divisive social conflict in the United States: the Black Lives Matters movement.
The 2020 protests against racial bias in policing were the largest political protests in U.S. history, explained study author Colin Holbrook, an associate professor of cognitive and information sciences at the University of California, Merced.
These protests, and the Back the Blue counter-protests, provided a real-world opportunity to study the role of an emotion previously associated with cooperation, prosociality, love and helpfulness in the context of group conflict. Although charitable giving and similar acts of kindness are probably the first things to come to mind when you think about helping, conflict should also arouse emotions motivating efforts to work together to help ones side prevail.
The researchers conducted two separate studies in 2020 while the BLM protests were happening across the United States. The studies included 2,172 U.S. adults, who were recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk.
In Study 1, they recruited participants from an online platform and showed them videos either depicting BLM protesters or neutral scenes. After watching the videos, participants were asked to report their emotions and their preferences regarding increasing or decreasing police funding. The researchers were specifically interested in a feeling called elevation, which is a positive emotion that inspires people to be more cooperative and helpful. They used a scale to measure participants elevation levels.
Elevation is an emotion which has only recently been named in English, but which research has proven to be a real and distinct emotion, just as happiness, pride, anger, awe, disgust, fear or gratitude are all distinct emotions, Holbrook explained. Feelings of elevation are inspired when we see people perform altruistic acts for others. Elevation involves bodily feelings such as goosebumps, warm sensations, and tears, as well as desire to be a more helpful and giving person.
The researchers also collected information about participants political orientation and their perceptions of police as prosocial cooperative partners. They used a self-report measure where participants indicated their agreement or disagreement with various political issues. Additionally, demographic information such as age, gender, and race was collected.
In Study 2, the researchers followed a similar procedure but added an additional video depicting Back the Blue (BtB) protesters, who support the police. They wanted to see how this video would elicit elevation and affect participants preferences regarding police funding. The same measurements and questionnaires from Study 1 were used in Study 2.
The researchers found that participants political orientation influenced whether they experienced moral elevation while watching a video of large-scale protests for racial equity or a counter-protest video. Conservatives experienced elevation in response to the BtB video, while liberals experienced elevation in response to the BLM video.
Furthermore, the state of elevation experienced by participants in response to the videos was associated with their preferences regarding funding for the police. Elevation evoked by the BLM video was related to a preference for defunding the police, while elevation evoked by the BtB video was related to a preference for increasing police funding. These findings indicate that peoples political attitudes and coalitional affiliation influence their emotional responses and preferences regarding the allocation of funds to policing and social services.
We found that conservatives felt elevation when watching anti-BLM counter-protests, progressives felt elevation when watching BLM protests, and that feelings of elevation predicted desire to either increase or decrease police funding depending on which side the participants were on, Holbrook told PsyPost. These results show that the same actions or policies can be experienced as moral, and as emotionally moving, in opposite directions depending on our group biases.
Morality is in the eye of the beholder. Enemies we may intuitively perceive as driven by hate may be driven by prosocial feelings and emotions. Understanding their moral feelings and motivations may be useful when negotiating with or even strategizing against members of opposing groups.
The researchers argue that the interactions between coalitional attitudes and state elevation observed in this study are likely to be even more pronounced in contexts of overtly violent intergroup conflicts. They also suggest that elevation and other positive emotions can contribute to a social-emotional feedback loop that hinders compromise and escalates conflict, as these feelings may reinforce the perception of ones own groups struggle as morally righteous and discourage openness to negotiation.
Our model of conflict, cooperation, and elevation applies to all conflicts, and should be tested in other contexts, including active wars, Holbrook said. Our work also speaks to the function of propaganda to frame ones side as morally righteous. The capacity to inspire elevation among other emotions on behalf of ones side, may be critical to mobilizing cooperation and victory in societal conflicts. Individuals who do not perceive their sides cause as morally justified should be less willing to cooperate, and less susceptible to emotional manipulation by leaders or media.
The study, Coalitionality shapes moral elevation: evidence from the U.S. Black Lives Matter protest and counter-protest movements, was authored by Colin Holbrook, Daniel M. T. Fessler, Adam Maxwell Sparks, Devin L. Johnson, Theodore Samore, and Lawrence I. Reed.

It is said that when a woman has a baby her DNA changes with the creation blooming inside her. She is forever shifted and connected primordially to this new soul. I was 42 when I had my first, and only son. Nothing has gone as planned.
I have always wanted to be a mom but did not think it would happen for me. I married at 38, and we were not sure if a child was an option or if we even wanted to be parents. My mind was already damaged from all the years of social work. I knew exactly what was going on in the world and was unsure I wanted to bring a life into that energy.
We watched our friends families begin, and it was an amazing experience to see growth from the people I love. We knew it would be difficult because I was older and not in the best of health with obesity and some managed health issues. We began our attempts, which lasted about six months before we gave up and I accepted that it was not meant to be for us.
My husband and I decided to plan our future with travel and adventure so we booked our first trip into the woods for our anniversary in June. We would eat, drink, stay naked all day, create, and hang with mother nature to toast to our newly defined future.
I found out that I was pregnant a month before we were to embark on our woodsy celebration of being childfree creatives. When I told my husband, he could not speak and probably saw his, or my death, flash before his eyes. He was speechless, and unnerved. I was not afraid.
I have always wanted to accept life as it was presented to me, and to strive for blessings in whatever situation I found myself in, even if it meant not getting what I wanted or causing strife and challenge to the journey.
For us, our son Vincent, was simply meant to be.
Pregnancy came easy for me aside from some changes in my palate. I was monitored relentlessly for the high risks of being an older mother. For the first time in my life, I felt the feeling of not being alone in the most symbiotic way. This baby relied on me for everything and I spoke to him often a constant dialogue that continues now that hes 12. I shared my fears that I was too old to give him the energy needed for motherhood, and shared my excitement over who he would become. We were both evolving into a new world that was a family.
My scheduled and induced delivery was set and turned into the most unnatural experience of my life. I just wanted both of us to survive. I labored for three days, had different doctors probing around my nether regions, strange devices inserted that meant to force dilation, and chemicals to induce progression for natural delivery. I came to the solution that my cervix was petrified with age as I never progressed beyond four centimeters. It was a nightmare, and my doctor was leaving for vacation to Australia. It was evident that he had already left in his mind.
My husband was reaching critical mass on day three, ready to slam the doctor into the wall for the neglect, but the physician was already on a plane.
Vincents heartbeat weakened and a whole team of people rushed in, rolling me around like bread dough to get the heartbeat back. At that point, Id had enough, did what Ive had to do all of my life without fail and stood up for myself. I demanded to speak to the legal department about why the medical staff was not moving forward with surgery. My politeness left my soul. I found myself in a queue of women also waiting for their surgeries. I distinctly remember thinking this was like waiting at Jiffy Lube for an oil change.
Finally, Vincent came via emergency cesarean by an OB/GYN Id never met.
The only voice I heard throughout was the anesthesiologist. He got me past all the fears that I was not numb enough, and stayed with me through the surgery. I do not remember seeing my husbands face but I had seen many births before and knew he would be forever changed by the experience.
After the tiger cub scream that told the world a new soul was here, Vincent was shown to me like a puppet from behind the sheet separating my head from my body, and then whisked off for all the usual tests and documentation.
I knew at that moment something was going wrong inside me. I felt like I was suffocating. I shared my fears and the voice of the anesthesiologist continued to keep me calm. The countdown for stitches and instrument accountability filled the room. They were in a hurry and I wanted to get off that table and hold my baby.
After some time in recovery, I got my wish. I looked into his squinty eyes and laid him on my chest to make sure he remembered the body that housed him. I could feel myself change as I began healing and bonding with this new little person. My body, forever changed from the experience, was entering another, more perilous journey. This was just the tip of the iceberg.

No Link Observed Between Gastrointestinal Tract Surgery and New … – MD Magazine

Despite a risk of disruption to the microbiome, gastrointestinal tract surgeries are associated with minimal risk of developing psoriasis.1
In new retrospective analysis data from a group of Taiwan investigators, invasive gastrointestinal tract procedures including appendectomy were not significantly associated with increased risk of a new psoriasis diagnosis. The findings additionally elucidated age- and sex-specific risk of new psoriasis diagnoses among such patients.
Led by Dr. Yi-Huei Liu, of the Chung Shan Medical University in Taichung, investigators sought to examine the link between gastrointestinal tract surgery and newly diagnosed psoriasis. Non-genetic psoriasis etiology is not absolutely understood by clinicians, though previous research has pointed to triggers including skin micro-trauma as a potential risk factor for the chronic skin disease.
Whats more, the gut microbiome is a pivotal factor in immune regulation. In a recent interview with HCPLive, dermatologist Karan Lal, DO, MS, described a complex dynamic between chronic skin diseases and microbiota.2
We know that with psoriasis, if they have a leaky gut, they have association with inflammatory bowel disease and a lot of gut issues, Lal said. And so maybe that's why people translate that into the skin microbiome. But again, that's a lot of the people who don't really understand the true relationship with the skin gut axis.
Nonetheless, Liu and colleagues stressed the little-defined association between these potential risk factors and newly diagnosed psoriasis.
Even if surgeries are widely considered a risk factor and disrupt the microbiome in the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in psoriasis, no previous studies have investigated the epidemiological relationship between gastrointestinal tract surgeries and subsequent pathogenesis of psoriasis, they wrote. Therefore, we conducted a nationwide case-control study to explore this issue.
Investigators conducted a nested case-control analysis using data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, including patients with newly diagnosed psoriasis from 2005 2013. Their retrospective analysis spanned 5 years after the index date of first psoriasis diagnosis. A control cohort of patients who had never been diagnosed with psoriasis or a similar disorder was matched 2:1 by age and sex to compare the association of concurrent gastrointestinal tract surgery.
The final assessment included 16,655 patients with newly diagnosed psoriasis from 2005 2013. Mean age of both cohorts was 32.2 years old. Chronic diseases including hypertension, diabetes, COPD, and hepatitis C were significantly more prevalent in patients with newly diagnosed psoriasis.
Liu and colleagues conditional logistic regression showed an 8% decreased risk of newly diagnosed psoriasis among patients who underwent gastrointestinal tract surgery (condition odds ratio [cOR], 0.92; 95% CI, 0.76 1.12; P = .426), and a 2% decreased risk of psoriasis among patients who underwent appendectomy (cOR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.76 1.27; P = .896).
In the multivariate regression analysis of age- and sex-related factors, investigators observed only patients aged 20 39 were at an increased risk of newly diagnosed psoriasis following gastrointestinal tract surgery (OR, 1.09; 95% CI, 0.79 1.51; P = .58), though the association was insignificant. Both male (OR, 0.96; 95%, 0.71 1.29; P = .762) and female (OR, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.69 1.17; P = .427) patients were at an insignificantly decreased risk of newly diagnosed psoriasis after surgery.
Regarding appendectomy, each of patients aged <20 years, 20 39 years, and 40 59 years were at an insignificantly increased risk of newly diagnosed psoriasis after procedure, as well as both female and male patients.
In conclusion, our study shows that gastrointestinal surgeries have a limited effect on psoriasis, investigators wrote. Except for gastrointestinal tract surgery, appendectomy did not have significant age- or sex-related effects on psoriasis.
However, the team stressed that their provisional data based solely on the Taiwan population would require further analysis of additional ethnicities and populations to interpret associations between surgery and psoriasis.

Lynk doses first cohort in Phase Ib trial of psoriasis therapy – Clinical Trials Arena
Posted: at 12:10 am
Lynk Pharmaceuticals has dosed the first cohort of patients in a Phase Ib clinical trial of LNK01004 ointment to treat psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin disease.
The study will evaluate preliminary efficacy of LNK01004 in Chinese patients with mild to moderate plaque psoriasis.
It will also assess the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetic properties of the topical ointment.
Lynk Pharmaceuticals chief development officer Dr Henry Wu said: LNK01004 has already shown good efficacy and safety in preclinical animal studies.
Characterised by scaly erythematous or plaque lesions, psoriasis is an immune-mediated, relapsing skin disease that can be local or widely distributed.
Lifelong treatment is required for psoriasis patients to prevent complications from developing, thereby maintaining their quality of life.
Lynk Pharmaceuticals founder and CEO Dr Zhao-Kui (ZK) Wan said: As a third generation JAK inhibitor, LNK01004 can effectively inhibit psoriasis-related cytokine-induced JAK/STAT signaling pathways in skin tissues by topical application.
Additionally, LNK01004 has the advantage of extremely low exposure in the blood system to potentially avoid safety concerns due to systemic exposure.
In addition to the highly selective JAK1 inhibitor LNK01001, we have also assembled a promising pipeline consisting of multiple third-generation, tissue-restricted soft pan JAK inhibitors in clinical trials including the GI-restricted LNK01003 for UC which is currently in Phase IIa.
Last week, Lynk reported that the Phase II study of LNK01001 for rheumatoid arthritis treatment demonstrated statistically significant differences in efficacy against placebo in primary and key secondary efficacy endpoints. It is actively seeking a partner for developing LNK01001 in markets worldwide.

Metabolic Inflammation Contributes to Depression in Psoriatic Disease – Dermatology Times
Posted: at 12:10 am
In patients with psoriasis and psoriatic disease, metabolic inflammation is a cause of comorbid depression, according to new research.
A research article1 reported that specific inflammatory patterns within IL-6, IL-8, IL-23, IL-17 family cytokines, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) can cause neuroinflammation, ultimately leading to anxiety and/or depressive behavior or depression in patients with psoriatic disease. According to authors, prior knowledge of psoriasis and comorbid depression linked burden of disease, psychological stress, and stigmatization to the origins of depression.
Authors noted that non-cutaneous diseases such as diabetes, heart failure, and hypertension were first identified as comorbidities of psoriasis in 1995, with cardio-metabolic consequences related to psoriatic disease being more thoroughly understood over time. Risk of myocardial infarction, for example, was previously found to be significantly higher in patients with psoriasis than in members of the general population.
Other conditions such as dyslipidemia and endothelial dysfunction were also linked to psoriatic disease. Like depression, article authors noted that both comorbid conditions are linked to inflammation.
In western countries, authors note that 1 in 5 people with psoriatic disease, as much as 20%, also experience depression. Previous studies have also demonstrated that rates of depression are higher in patients with psoriatic conditions than in the general population.
Citing recent brain structure research,2 authors described research demonstrating increased right precuneus thickness in people with psoriasis, only in cases where depression was present. Additionally, further research3 demonstrated a positive correlation between psoriasis area and severity index (PASI) and the Zung self-rating depression scale (SDS) in cases of comorbid depression and psoriasis.
Considering that depression is an inflammatory condition with neuroinflammatory events with a similar signature as in the major domains of psoriatic disease, people with psoriasis-associated depression are no longer responsible for their perceived lack of coping with psychological threads, articleauthors wrote. In the practical management of people with psoriatic disease, screening for depression by using simple clinical questions or respective tools needs to be implemented.

In an interview with HCPLive Rheumatology, Soumya Chakravarty, MD, PhD, FACP, FACR, Senior Director, Strategic Lead, Janssen Rheumatology, and Daphne Chan, PhD, Head of Dermatology Medical Affairs, Janssen, discussed Janssens commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion for patients with psoriatic disease.
It has been a fantastic opportunity to emphasize our dedication to advancing care for patients with immune-mediated diseases, especially those with psoriatic disease who belong to communities of color, Chakravarty emphasized. The determination platform we discussed is just one of many ongoing efforts, where we collaborate with various partners to develop specific solutions. It's important to note that this is just the beginning.
Their efforts are accompanied by extensive data generation in patients of color and the creation of a diverse workforce. They strive to deliver culturally competent care and promote progress in this area.
At Janssen, they have undertaken an extensive analysis of the dermatology and rheumatology landscapes to identify unmet needs so they can take meaningful actions as an industry leader and partner. They make an effort to acknowledge the problems the world faces and are realistic about what they can address. Therefore, they focus on the areas where they can make a difference.
Regarding the VISIBLE study, Chan emphasized that simply conducting the study opens doors to demonstrating how it is possible and why it should become the new standard in trial conduct.
Initially, we were apprehensive and doubted whether it could be done, Chan stated. However, I am pleased to report that even taking that first step has yielded tremendous results and rewards. We surprised ourselves by completing the trial's enrollment 7 times faster than projected, concluding 6 months ahead of schedule.
With the trial recruiting so quickly, they expect to have results available sometime next year.
We will be delighted to re-engage in a conversation about the results and what we are learning about people of color living with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, Chan emphasized. This experience sets a new chapter for inclusive research and medical practice, defining how it should be in the future.
This transcript was edited for clarity.
