Ian McConnell: Will SNP deliver, as Tories refuse to fix mess? – HeraldScotland

Posted: May 2, 2023 at 7:35 pm

There has been so much debate in recent years over the Scottish Governments relationship with, and attitude towards, business.

Mr Borland, director of devolved nations for the Federation of Small Businesses, has been among the more moderate and constructive voices on this front. He has acknowledged the positives as well as highlighting areas of difficulty.

He is not alone in such an approach. At times, however, there have been other voices in the Scottish business community which have been a little more shrill, and often wide of the mark with their criticisms.

Several of my own columns have, taking in the whole picture, challenged the orthodoxy that has developed that the Scottish National Party administration has been bad for business.

In contrast to the SNP, the Conservatives at Westminster have since 2010 surely been very bad for business indeed. The Tory errors have included, but by no means been limited to, hampering the economy greatly with ill-judged and counter-productive austerity and the utter folly of Brexit, which is hitting living standards hard and will continue to do so in the years ahead.

The SNP administration, which can obviously do little about Brexit other than highlight the folly and has only had powers to offset in a relatively small way some of the Tories savage austerity, has meanwhile been at the helm at a time when Scotland has been proving very attractive to overseas investors. Such external perception of attractiveness would seem like a good gauge, especially given the distortions sometimes created by the goldfish-bowl nature of politics in Scotland.

Accountancy firm EYs latest annual survey published last May showed Scotland outpaced UK-wide progress on foreign direct investment dramatically in 2021. EY declared Scotland had made great strides as a destination for FDI in 2021, as its survey revealed the nations attractiveness rating from potential future investors had hit a record.

Notwithstanding this, many in the business world, not just the strident and sometimes politically motivated lobbyists but also more thoughtful voices such as Glasgow Chamber of Commerce chief executive Stuart Patrick, have highlighted perceived issues with the Scottish Governments interaction with the sector.

Against this backdrop, the following observation from Mr Borland in his column in The Herald on Monday seemed all the more noteworthy: We may have witnessed a watershed moment in the way the Scottish Government interacts with business.

Mr Borland reflected on Humza Yousafs early days in his new post and offered the view that the First Ministers statement on his governments priorities contained a lot that deserves our attention.

READ MORE: Denial after denial from brass-necked Tory arch-Brexiter

The FSBs director of devolved nations added: Most notably, after months of sustained campaigning from the Federation of Small Businesses and other industry bodies, Mr Yousaf announced a postponement of the much-maligned deposit return scheme (DRS). Furthermore, he sent the equally controversial anti-alcohol advertising and promotion plans, which I think many now accept should never have seen light of day, back to the drawing board.

In doing so, the First Minister signalled there will be a renewed focus on meaningful engagement with business to guard against similar episodes in the future.

Mr Borland noted that the first test of this new approach to business engagement will be the review and reform of DRS.

The specific proposals for and uncertainty around the DRS, which is aimed at encouraging more people to recycle plastic and glass bottles and aluminium cans, have undoubtedly caused much angst.

There will no doubt be many tests of the perceived new approach ahead and it will be interesting to follow the various views on how Mr Yousaf and his administration are seen to be performing in these.

My column for The Herald on Wednesday reflected on how Mr Yousaf had acted swiftly and significantly on the DRS, and in sending the proposals on restricting alcohol advertising, which had seemed likely to result in absurd effects if implemented in their original form, back to the drawing board. The column concluded it was a case of so far, so good from Mr Yousaf (whose ascension to First Minister would not have been the choice of some company bosses) on matters business and economic but noted the importance of what came next.

It will be fascinating to see how things evolve from here.

My Friday column for The Herald meanwhile looked at two major constraints for Scotlands tourism sector, which are particularly lamentable given the UKs economic woes.

The shortage of affordable housing in remote and rural areas of Scotland is a key challenge for many hospitality operators, with the owners of The Seaforth seafood restaurant, bar and fish-and-chip shop in Ullapool having taken the innovative step of buying the nearby Morefield Motel to provide staff accommodation.

Mr Yousaf has identified affordable housing as a priority for his administration and it will be interesting to see how he tackles the situation and what results are achieved.

The other dispiriting constraint is of course the impact of Brexit in fuelling the skills and labour shortages crisis in the hospitality sector.

Sadly, it is clear that the Conservatives at Westminster, who have the power to deal with this problem, will not be doing so on ideological grounds. After all, it is their clampdown on immigration from European Economic Area countries to the UK, through their hard Brexit, which has caused this problem in the first place. And they most definitely have a predisposition towards not owning up to, or fixing, their sorry Brexit mess.

Aussie nootropics start-up, Yootropics, eyes opportunities in healthy … – NutraIngredients-Asia

Posted: at 7:35 pm

Founded in 2022, Yootropics is a spin-off from Biov8 that was specialising in peptide treatments.

Its nootropics supplement range targets cognitive performance and claims to encapsulate clinical range dose for all ingredients in a daily, two-tablet formula.

Speaking to NutraIngredients-Asia, its co-founder Nick Austin said there was a market gap for nootropics in the healthy ageing space:

Currently, a lot of elderly start taking medications when the damage is already done. Its more reactionary health. We feel that theres much more and a better way to address this market in a preventative way to look at natural nootropic formulas that help delay the onset and improve the long-range brain health earlier.

Alzheimers, memory loss and other cognitive issues are so widespread these days when people reach their 50s, but these days they are mostly dealt with by prescribed medications.

This finding had emerged from its collaboration with a registered psychologist specializing in neuro-performance who was already using nootropics to help his patients suffering from anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The team then spent about six months ingredient sourcing and formulating, before rolling out its first product called Brain targeting memory.

Its hero ingredients include patented ingredients like Zynamite and Relora, sage, rhodiola, saffron, and a combination of 11 different nootropics. Its two other products are Focus for concentration, and Calm for anxiety.

Its nootropics' product range were approved by Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), backed by its internal clinical trials conducted. The paper will be published later this year.

Austin added that the start-up is in discussions with Australian universities to back up its evidence-based claims for its products. He alsoteased the potential for personalized supplements.

A lot of the research were doing now is in the Quantitative Electroencephalogram (QEEG) technology that is going to assist us in looking at different doses for different individuals. The QEEG allows us to look at the brain activity and categorize the different brains. Then, we can look at how different formulas best optimize the performance of different brain types. We feel there is a big opportunity to have more tailored nootropic formulas to assist with individual brain types.

Yootropics is available for worldwide shipping via its website, and only has an offline retail presence in Australia at wellness clinics, psychology clinics and chemist chains.

It said that it adopts a more discerning distribution strategy due to its price points falling within the mid- to high-range (AUD $95 for single product maximum, AUD $230 for a three products bundle maximum) and its target consumers of high-performance executives.

Austin explained that consumer education goes hand in hand with market acceptance for its products: I guess one of the big hurdles that we have in the market is education to educate consumers that it's not just looking at the ingredients in the formula but making sure they are at the right levels that will actually have some performance.

Typically, you know, consumers will look at the look at the back of the bottle, see some names that they recognize, and they'll buy it on that basis. But if there are very small amounts that wont do anything, it's purely just a marketing stunt.

80% of its revenue currently comes from Australia, but interest has been climbing for export markets in the US, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, UK, and France.

Within Asia-Pacific, Yootropics is eyeing opportunities in Taiwan and China, due to the rising awareness of addressing brain health early in age. It says that overseas expansion is planned in the next year.

The company is currently going through a capital raise to solidify its product development and global distribution strategy.

SmartProtein Rebrands As Nutriv With Expanded Vision On … – Digital Journal

PRESS RELEASE

Published May 2, 2023

LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESSWIRE / May 2, 2023 / Back in 2020, SmartProtein disrupted the wellness space with their comprehensive protein powders designed to elevate and streamline our experiences along our personal health journeys, tossing out tired promises from competing brands in favor of honest, holistic wellness. As over-consumption in nutritional support becomes a growing concern, companies like SmartProtein look to simplify the approach to a balanced body and mind by leading with transparency, reminding us that, when it comes to our health, less is always more. Today, the company has rebranded as Nutriv, a lifestyle movement dedicated to the Marie Kondo method of inclusive health and development that goes beyond mere protein powders.

Upon the release of their hero product, the SmartProtein blend, Nutriv was met with critical acclaim for their condensed approach to nutrition, offering an adaptable support system built with all-natural, vegan ingredients that keep all of their promises. The powders, made with pea-protein, cinnamon, and powerful nootropics, cover the bases from brain power to physical prowess, setting a new standard for wellness and fitness that does everything and more. A recent story from WebMD details in-depth the trouble with over-consumption in the wellness community, and with so many routes and roadmaps unfolding at our feet, it can be difficult to make informed decisions on how to improve the health of our body and mind without exhausting our assets.

Nutriv has expanded their ideology to position their protein blends as supportive artillery to our wellness journeys rather than replacements, and the company's vision for inclusive nutrition lives and breathes in their educational edge, sharpened and cut for community engagement on their website and social media channels. Nutriv offers a platform for personal wellness that informs, educates, and promotes a more objective position on human health, because there is no "one size fits all" approach when it comes to our body and mental wealth, but there is a simplified way of getting back to basics.

As it stands today, conducting a simple Google search for "improving mental health" yields a whopping 557M results, the engagement cone hard at work to elevate the most popular pages. From this vantage point, where can people turn for a condensed solution to their nutritional needs? To support their vision, the company maintains a voice on their website that dives deep into practical wellness techniques--tips and tricks on how to live healthier with ease. One of their more compelling entries dissects the allure of nootropics and their role in achieving a balanced state of wellness for mind, body, and soul. At its core, the goal of Nutriv is to educate and empower individuals to take control of their health and put the power of wellness in their own hands. Their simplified model for balance currently comes in vanilla or chocolate flavors, but the pursuit of a better body and stronger mind goes beyond powders or supplements. Above all else, it's a lifestyle choice.

"Healthy" doesn't have to be hard, and Nutriv is dedicated to redefining our understanding of simple maneuvers and where they work into our wellness routines. The company is a leading force in personal growth and development, because the root of a balanced lifestyle begins from within; a healthy mind begets a healthy body, and the rest is sure to follow.

ABOUT:

Nutriv is a wellness company rooted in simplified nutrition. Formerly known as SmartProtein, the company has recently expanded their vision to include ethos that support a comprehensive, balanced lifestyle for the body, mind, and soul. Functioning optimally both mentally and physically is so important especially later in life and Indi Mind helps with both. Whether you want to focus on a project in the afternoon but not suffer from a disturbed nights sleep after another coffee or want to focus and achieve more in your morning workouts, Mind gets my vote. Women are at more than twice the risk of developing Alzheimers compared to men, and we are increasingly recognising that diet and exercise can help you look after your brain. Many of the female executives I see, especially those going through the menopause, find Mind makes a real difference in their performance and ability to function. Dr Adam Carey, chief medical officer

Brain health is critical for women, who are at increased risk of Alzheimers and dementia later in life. Diet and movement play a pivotal role in reducing this risk, and research has shown midlife metabolic health is a powerful predictor of risk and an opportunity for improvement. Drinking Indi Mind before my morning workout is one of the tools I use to increase my workout efficiency with caffeine and polyphenols, and incorporate beneficial flavanols and nootropics for improved brain health. Social Shrooms Have Inspired The Next Wave Of Sober Curiosity – mindbodygreen

Posted: at 7:35 pm

Here's the thing about adaptogens: The best results come from long-term use, and you can't expect a life-changing transformation from a single serving. (We also always recommend speaking with a health professional before adding any functional herbs to your routine.) However, depending on the potency of the product and your own personal stress levels, it is possible to feel a noticeable "buzz."

Namely, if you are stressed or anxious, you'll likely feel it the most, whereas if you're already very engaged in a social setting, you may not notice much of a difference. That's the sole purpose of adaptogens, after allthey help you better adapt to your surroundings and restore balance. Many social shroom products also contain other nootropics (such as kanna, caffeine, and guarana), which may offer more of an immediate effect.

And yes, you could totally consume these functional mushrooms in capsule, tincture, or powder form, but the delivery does enhance the social experience. "You're not going to bring some powder and a frother to mix into oat milk at a party," says Charlotte Cruze, co-founder of Alice. But you could easily break off a square of chocolate or sip on a smoky, mezcal-inspired mocktail (mezcal is certainly associated with community and ritual in many Mexican cultures). "It's something delicious that's shareable, that you want to bring to a party and gives you that ritual," Cruze adds.

The move toward sober curiosity also likely has something to do with itprevious Google research shows "drinking in general decline" among Gen Z.And as more and more nonalcoholic beverages emerge on the scene, brands continue to innovate with sophisticated, sensory blends.

"I think people want to feel better," says Klein regarding the shift toward nonalcoholic spirits. "They're over disassociating. They want to feel more connected post-pandemic and just in general. And that's what [functional] mushrooms do: They turn your brain on and help us connect to other people in a way that alcohol just doesn't."

Kung agrees: "It's a little bit of a boost. You know, nothing too intense where we're out of control. Something we can actually function on," she notes. According to Altneu, many people are feeling more isolated than ever, and "our hearts crave for more real connection." So it makes sense that folks want to engage in rituals that help them stay present and open to receiving wisdom, thus enhancing their social bonds.

And if those rituals can simultaneously support immunity, brain health, and energy levels over time, that's certainly a bonus. It's no wonder folks are becoming more and more curious.

The Future Is Now: Wrestling with Ethics, Policy and Brain-Computer … – NC State News

Posted: at 7:35 pm

Devices that allow computers to interface with the human brain are already here close to 200,000 people have cochlear implants in the U.S. alone. And a wide range of additional brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies are in development. As these technologies become more common, so do questions related to ethics and policy with agencies from the Federal Trade Commission to the FDA already facing regulatory decisions about BCI devices.

A new book, Policy, Identity, and Neurotechnology: The Neuroethics of Brain-Computer Interfaces, explores these issues and more. The book was co-edited by Veljko Dubljevi, an associate professor at NCState who leads the NeuroComputational Ethics Research Group; and by Allen Coin, a former graduate student at NCState.

To learn more about what BCI devices are on the horizon, and the questions those technologies raise, we spoke with Coin and Dubljevi.

The Abstract: Before we talk about the book itself, I have a threshold question: What exactly are BCIs? How common are they? Can you give me some examples?

Allen Coin: In short, BCIs are a class of technology that can read and translate brain activity into a format digestible by a computer. BCI devices use brain activity as input to provide some sort of output, or to pass information back to the user as feedback sometimes directly to the users brain. These devices have a lot of applications in medicine and are increasingly being adapted for widespread commercial use.

For instance, there are BCI devices in clinical trials that can warn a user when they are about to have a seizure. And you may know somebody with one type of BCI device that has been around for a long time: the cochlear implant. This technology is rapidly advancing, with a lot of investment from commercial ventures that aim to popularize this technology for everyday use perhaps BCIs will become as common as smartphones. Some private ventures have lofty goals for BCI commercialization, including Synchron which recently received FDA approval for human trials and Neuralink, a company that has a knack for making headlines and which has a stated goal for achieving human-AI symbiosis, among other very sci-fi applications.

Not every commercial application of BCI will require embedding a computer chip in your brain, however some private ventures seek to use non-invasive BCI technology, like a modified electroencephalogram (EEG) which can read brain activity via sensors you can wear like a hat. One such venture, Neurable, is working on a product that aims to put BCI sensors into a pair of headphones that can help the user optimize their own productivity. For example, it might let users know when to take breaks.

TA: The book is subtitled The Neuroethics of Brain-Computer Interfaces. What sort of ethical questions do BCIs raise?

Veljko Dubljevi: In our prior work, we mapped the landscape of ethical challenges arising from the introduction of BCI technologies. We characterized these challenges according to recurring themes of ethical concerns that were noted by ethicists: physical factors (relating to user safety and harm to humans or experimental animals), psychological factors (relating to autonomy and changes in humanity or personhood) and the most diverse social factors (relating to issues such as stigmatization of users; privacy; informed consent; responsibility; and fairness). There are also novel ethical issues which arise when BCIs are combined with computer-to-brain interfaces to allow direct communication between two or more brains, thus comprising brain-to-brain interfaces. Such new technological forms of communication may lead to information overload and radical psychological distress, at least for some people. Thus, serious consideration needs to be given to the vulnerability of individuals and groups and how they may benefit (or be harmed) by these technologies.

TA: What about policy challenges? Are there regulatory requirements in place governing BCI technologies? Should there be? And who would, or should, be doing the regulating?

Dubljevi: There are many policy challenges. For instance, the BCI technology is falling under inconsistent levels of oversight. On the permissive end of the scale, you have things like cases of wearable BCIs, where more or less the Federal Trade Commission has jurisdiction and will interfere only if producers start using too much hyperbole in their promotional materials. At the more stringent end of the scale you have cases of implantable BCIs, where the Food and Drug Administration needs to be satisfied that the BCIs are safe and effective. Another challenge is that current guidelines for research ethics usually dont apply to market research and yet this is exactly the area with the most exciting developments. Finally, there are unknowns about downstream effects of widespread implementation of BCI technology, which could be pertinent for regulation.

TA: Does your book focus solely on what we already know about ethics, policy and BCIs? Or are you also laying out recommendations for the path forward? If there are recommendations, what are they?

Coin: Our book doesnt just cover whats already known about BCI policy and ethics. The book also considers potential, realistic near-future applications of the technology, what ethical considerations those applications could have, and resulting policy implications. For instance, one developing area of research in BCI, which may seem like science fiction, is the use of BCI to enable direct brain-to-brain interfacing.

One of the key recommendations discussed at length in the book is the need for ethicists and policymakers to keep abreast of the rapid advancements in this technology that are taking place in the research, engineering, and commercialization spaces. Given that the stated goals of some private investment in the technology are to develop sci-fi applications like mind uploading or brain-AI symbiosis regardless of how feasible such applications may be this suggests a potential future path for this technology that could be rife with unique new challenges to our social norms and legal system. While we try to present a picture in this book of BCI that is cautiously optimistic, rather than alarmist, there is nevertheless a theme that it is important to keep in front of the rapid advancements in this technology from an ethics and policy perspective.

TA: Why write this book now?

Dubljevi: The field of BCI technology is now migrating from being almost entirely limited to academic research labs into a mainstream social phenomenon. With significant increases in computational power and sophistication of machine learning, BCIs are increasingly promising (or threatening) to become a fixture of the new human condition.

Coin: Building on that, another important reason for this book and for scholarship into the ethical, legal and social implications of BCI in general is something I alluded to in the previous question: it is possible that the commercialization and popularization of BCI technology could make BCIs as commonplace and ubiquitous in the future as the smartphone is today, and its important to consider the potential societal effects of such a scenario. Id pose a question of my own here: If a technology company were to ask you if youd like to have a computer chip implanted in your brain, what would be your response? And why? This book could help us, as a society, prepare to answer that question.

ACID TEST The Acid Test, April 2023 By Miles Bowe May 02, 2023

Bandcamps outer limits continue to be a rewarding place for psychedelia, experimental club music, noise, vaporwave, and the wholly uncategorizable. In each edition of Acid Test, Miles Bowe explores its far reaches to dig up hidden gems and obscure oddities. This April, we look at a pair of albums using mind-bending samples to pay tribute to two very different songs, a digitally prepared piano, a psychedelic album that feels like wandering an arcade, and a musical titan opening a unique new chapter.

Most people know Yoshimi for her kinetic drumming in the legendary band Boredoms or her equally trippy project OOIOOnot to mention her iconic yelling on the Flaming Lips album named in her honor. That legacy only makes the experience of hearing To The Forest To Live A Truer Lifea debut collaboration with Izumi Kiyoshi credited under the mind-melting name YoshimiOizumikiYoshiduOall the more astonishing. Feeding vocals and expressive piano through her collaborators modular synth, Yoshimi creates a sound both laser-focused and overwhelmingly expansive. Some tracks, like opener YofuyO or YoY 7, flood your ears with bright, synth-processed flourishes, while rich piano patterns wind through others as acoustic fragments flicker and bend. Yoshimis piano playing is so entrancing that her vocals almost sneak up on you, appearing gradually on tracks like OmimiO before reaching incredible peaks in the second half on the immense mull and the hyper-processed 1.yoO. Instilled with spontaneity, wonder, and a life-giving fervor, To The Forest To Live A Truer Life crystallizes so many of Yoshimis strengths while also kicking off an incredible new chapter.

Since last summer Hausu Mountain off-shoot Blorpus Editions has pleasantly orbited the Chicago experimental label like a weird little moon, delivering everything from electroacoustic epics to a re-scoring of the 1999 movie Twister. Two recent highlights capture the labels adventurousness while taking differentbut equally extremeapproaches to sampling. I Am Sitting In A Cloud finds Doug Kaplan replicating the words of Alvin Luciers iconic electroacoustic piece I Am Sitting In A Room through deliriously spliced-together pop song samples. Once a funny highlight from the 2018 Pepper Mill Rondo release E.D.M., this now 20-minute piece is the result of Kaplan repeatedly uploading the recording to free audio-hosting sites, gradually reducing it to digital noise.

While that release fuses countless tiny samples to one end, sound artist Mike Sugarmanaka Exestinesuses his album Stang to blast a single songStings Desert Roseinto a whirlwind of electro-acoustic fragments. As tributes to their respective songs, these releases couldnt be more different; yet they end up complimenting each other wonderfully.

A sprawling 17-minute piece for four electric basses, Do Make Say Think is the latest release by Naemi, an alias of the producer Exael. Heady atmospheres, delicately plucked melodies, and sometimes thunderous pulses of feedback move gradually over each other like shifting clouds. It only grows knottier and more abstract as it evolves, and in its darker moments, that soft, plucked bass feels as large and ominous as suspension bridge wires. Both beautiful and unsettling, Do Make Slay Think is a continually absorbing listen.

Composer Marc Junker finds a smart frame for this collection of digitally dismantled piano pieces, presenting them as a computerized take on prepared piano. The skittering melodies of Beyond and ~(crashed)~ capture those percussive touches associated with the instrument, while Winds Theme seems to digitally craft the shuffle of footsteps. While Prepared Piano 1.0 doesnt resemble the prepared piano pieces of innovator John Cage, in both cases the preparation feels like a foundation rather than an end result. The frames are impressive, but what Junker composes within them is what makes Prepare Piano 1.0 stick with you.

The latest zone from NEW MEXICAN STARGAZERS opens with a minute of buzzing arcade machines and echoing crowds, and is appropriately named (enter). This brief blip sets the vibe for a bleary collection of synth jams that feel like wandering from one different game cabinet to the next. The chirpy 5D Entertainment brings to mind the hypnotic world of James Ferraros Marble Surf, while Mirror Maze ripples with synthesized guitar, matching the satisfying grind of an old Sega game. NEW MEXICAN STARGAZERS excel at conjuring vivid and surreal spacesmotels in the rain, highway rest-stops at night, the sound worlds of fantastical albums like Deserts Zenith and Aqua Temple. Return 2 White Sands Arcade feels like another welcome pitstop on the journey.
