4 days on the Minerva Reefs, then onto Fiji Sailing Logic

Posted: March 4, 2023 at 12:45 am

As you can see on the above satellite image, the Minerva Reefs are on a major under ocean ridge line. They are a couple of coral lagoon with almost nothing above the water at high tide and a substantial wall of coral deadening the ocean swell at low tide.

There isno land within 400miles, to wash sediment into the water, so the underwater visibility is like gin.

Both North and South Minerva Reefs lagoons has a small break in thecoral wall to allow a boat to access. The access passages into the lagoonsare notbig, sodaylight is essential to make sure I do not add Logic to the numerous boat that have been wreck on the reefs.

North Minerva Reef has a more substantial coral rim to the lagoon, which makes it a better protected anchorage from the ocean swell. We ended up being able to make it into South Minerva Reefs lagoon, in daylight, which would have not been the case if we had of continued the additional 24miles to North Minerva.I took the boat into the western lee of the island to try and catch a fish as we motored around to the entry of the lagoon. Which proved to be an ideal call as we caught a 4kg Big Eye Tuna, the Rolls Royce of sashimi tuna species.Compared to the coral reefs I had anchored in amongst , in the Great Barrier Reef, off the Australian coast, it was relatively easy to entre to South Minerva Reefslagoon, but I still would not have liked todo it without daylight to confirmthere were no coral bommies in our path.

We located a sandy patch to drop the anchor in, set the anchor alarm and had a very enjoyable nights sleep, not interrupted by having to alternate watches.

At high tide the reef was no visible, resulting in a swell, that has us postponing jobs until the stiller waters at low tide.

After the cold of a New Zealand autumn it was great to be able to go for a swim in the crystal clear watersand take Albert ashore to check out the reef at low tide

a walk took us to the outer edge, where the power of waves was very evident

The sunrises out in the middle of ocean where spectacular

after 2 nights in South Minerva we motored the 25 miles up to North Minervaagain staying close to the reef in the hope of catching a fish, but no luck this time.

An aerial photo of North Minerva, could well be off a human egg, taken from a paper on artificial insemination, with the NWen entry in thelagoon, where the replacement nucleusis to be inserted.

there was a very surreal feel to the lagoon. like a still pond in the middle of the ocean.

we anchored on the eastern side of the lagoonclose to what was left of the wreck of a trawlerdown one of the anchor chain tubes was a good size crayfish

so the plan was hatched, Mat would spear it from the top, Jemma would patrol the bottom, incase it tried to escape and I would be the cameraman.

success!!!

I also speared a good size tooth fish (nice eating)

We then went ashore, to find that under the big rocks there were crayfish

It took a quick bit of fine tuning and we had worked out how to stick a gloved hand under the rock, feel around for the crayfish, make sure it was a big one, then pull it out (great fun, in a hunter gather way).

They were good eating, just the legs and base of the antennas had us full after eating them for dinner.primate grooming Logic style

The next front moved over and the breeze changed from a northerly to a southerly, so it was time to reluctantly leave the Minervas and continue on our way to Fiji.

Initially the wind was too light, forcing us to motor

as it increased we were able to pull out the Screecher

Usually we heard the flying fish landing on the boat at night and threw them back, unfortunately nobody heard this one We had run out of fresh fruit and veg, so the germinated lentils were a welcome addition to our diet

As we approached Fiji it was time to put up the yellow quarantine flag and the Fijian cutesy flagUpon arrival, we were first visited by La from heath to make sure we were not a health risk to the Fijian population. We passed and the yellow flag could now come down. The next step in the paperwork for entering Fiji was Customs. Which again went smoothly.

with the paperwork out of the way, we then moved Logic into the Vuda Point Marinawe ended up covering the 440miles from North Minerva to Nadi in 2 days and 10hrs for a more respectableaverage speed of 7.5kt

The rest is here:

Republic of Minerva – Wikipedia

Posted: at 12:45 am

The reefs were put on the charts by Captain John Nicholson of LMS Haweis in December 1818 as reported in The Sydney Gazette 30 January 1819[4] and had been marked on charts as "Nicholson's Shoal" since the late 1820s. Captain H. M. Denham of HMS Herald surveyed the reefs in 1854 and renamed them after the Australian whaler Minerva, which collided with South Minerva Reef on 9 September 1829.[5]

In 1971 barges loaded with sand arrived from Australia, bringing the reef level above the water and allowing construction of a small tower and flag. The Republic of Minerva issued a declaration of independence on 19 January 1972,[6] in letters to neighboring countries and even created their own currency. Morris C. "Bud" Davis was elected as President of the Republic of Minerva.[7]

Prior to 1972, Tonga had not claimed sovereignty over the Minerva Reefs. In 1887, when King George Tupou I of Tonga first proclaimed Tongas territory, the Minerva Reefs were not included. When asked about the Minervan's project, the King of Tonga, Taufaahau Tupou IV, denied rumors that Tonga meant to claim sovereignty over it, yet said "it was in the best interest of Tonga not to allow a group of people, whose objects were to make money and whose activities could be harmful, to become established on the reefs." Neighboring countries agreed; Fijis Prime Minister, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, claimed the actions of the Minervans set a dangerous precedent: "If these people can claim Minerva, what would stop them from doing it here?"[8]

Consequently, a conference of the neighboring states (Australia, New Zealand, Tonga, Fiji, Nauru, Samoa, and territory of Cook Islands) met on 24 February 1972 at which Tonga made a claim over the Minerva Reefs, and the rest of the states recognized its claim.

On 15 June 1972 the following proclamation was published in a Tongan government gazette:

PROCLAMATION

A Tongan expedition was sent to enforce the claim, arriving on 18 June 1972. The Flag of Tonga was raised on 19 June 1972 on North Minerva and on South Minerva on 21 June 1972. Tonga's claim was recognized by the South Pacific Forum in September 1972.[1] Meanwhile, Provisional President Davis was fired by founder Michael Oliver and the project collapsed in confusion. Nevertheless, Minerva was referred to in O. T. Nelson's post-apocalyptic children's novel The Girl Who Owned a City, published in 1975, as an example of an invented utopia that the book's protagonists could try to emulate.

In 1982 a group of Americans led again by Davis tried to occupy the reefs, but were forced off by Tongan troops after three weeks.[10]No known claimant group since 1982 has made any attempt to take possession of the Minerva Reefs[citation needed].

In November 2005, Fiji lodged a complaint with the International Seabed Authority concerning Tonga's maritime waters claims surrounding Minerva. Tonga has lodged a counter claim.[11] The Minerva "principality" group also claims to have lodged a counter claim[citation needed].

Fiji, Tonga war over Minerva Reef | Stuff.co.nz

Posted: at 12:45 am

The latest confrontation between Tonga and Fiji adds to the significance of an odd incident on an unpopulated reef 1500 kilometres north of New Zealand.

The Minerva Reefs have been part of Tonga for 40 years, but last year Fiji claimed them and sent its navy there to destroy navigation lights on the entrance to the lagoon.

Meanwhile, last week a Tonga navy vessel sailed into Fiji waters to take Fiji Lieutenant Colonel Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara to Nuku'alofa. Mara was facing charges of plotting to overthrow dictator Voreqe Bainimarama.

Mara is from the Lau Islands, part of Fiji, but culturally and historically part of Tonga. In the 1850s one of his Tongan forefathers, Ma'afu'otu'itonga, a Methodist, waged war on the Fijian Seru Cakobau who was based on the island of Bau, just off shore from Fiji's main island of Viti Levu.

Cakobau ultimately won and Lau became part of Fiji. Bainimarama comes from the Bau line.

However, the Lau Islands provided the leader crucial to modern Fiji: Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara was Fiji's founding prime minister and later president. The runaway colonel is his youngest son.

The first broadside in the latest skirmish might well have occurred in 2009, when several yachts bound for New Zealand were chased out of Minerva Reefs' lagoon, a stopping point for those travelling here, by Fijian navy boats.

Minerva Reefs were claimed by Tonga in 1972 after the shadowy US Phoenix Foundation shipped in dirt and declared it a republic.

The late King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV loaded a ferry with soldiers, a convict work detail and a four-piece brass band and sailed the 500 kilometres to personally haul down the "Republic of Minerva" flag.

As he raised his own banner, he declared it a Tongan island.

The reefs have taken on more significance as their possession gives rights to lucrative undersea minerals. South Korean, Chinese and Australian interests are seeking prospecting rights in the area.

Fiji's Foreign Affairs deputy permanent secretary Sila Balawa said last year it objected to Tonga building structures on Fiji territory.

In November 2009 the Fiji patrol boats arrived in the lagoon and chased yachts away.

Coincidentally, an RNZAF Orion was flying over the lagoon as the events were taking place.

Canadians Paul and Mary Major, of the yacht Bella Via, blogged on their arrival of the Orion over the reef: "It was very comforting to know that the plane was out there looking out for us."

Peter Sidler, on the Swiss-registered yacht Green Coral heading for the Bay of Islands, told of the Fijians challenging three yachts: "We were given 30 minutes to prepare for departure and leave. We left the Minerva Reefs angry and frustrated and continued our journey towards Opua."

Tonga's Ministry of Lands CEO Dr Sione Nailasikau Halatuituia said at the time that a dispute was taking place but they were surprised by Fiji's actions.

"The king claimed in it 1972. Since then we have been maintaining patrol and put up a lighthouse for the safety of seafarers," he said.

"We have developed a lot, and we are surprised at what is happening."

The Pacific Forum recognised Tonga's annexation of Minerva in 1972 but Fiji, which is now suspended from the 16-nation body, has not formally accepted it.

What is Trance Music? (18 Different Types of Trance Music) – DITM

Posted: at 12:45 am

The birth of electronic music brought with it various unique genres.

Of these new styles, trance music is a notable one worthy of discussion.

Trance is specifically composed to manipulate its listeners into experiencing a hypnotic state reminiscent of a psychedelic trip.

The music started to gain popularity in the late 80s and early 90s, parallel to the birth of techno and house music.

Though trance can be categorized as one style of electronic music, it has distinct qualities that set it apart from its electronic siblings.

This article looks to take a more in-depth look into the funky world of trance lets take a trip with us.

Trance music is a part of the electronic music genre. It was born from the new-age British music scene, German techno, and hardcore music scenes in the 1990s.

Now, trance is considered a music genre on its own, often taking influences from other music genres, including techno, house, pop, chill, tech music, ambient tones, and even classical music.

A trance can be described as a state of hypnotism and blurred consciousness.

It can be triggered by spiritual meditation, the use of psychedelic drugs, some breathing techniques, or even occur almost randomly.

Trance music mimics this state by building up tension through a series of build-up beats and release layers.

This musics primary goal is to create tension and make people lose their consciousness in a trance state.

Modern trance music is often combined with other genres such as electro and progressive house.

Modern trance tracks may also include harsh bass lines and drum beats while still keeping their roots of melody breakdown and longer transitions.

Trance music is defined by its tempo, around 135-150 BPM, along with repeating melody and a musical form that builds tension through the so-called peaks and drops elements.

One of the most common trance music characteristics is a climax followed by a soft beat release leaving an atmospheric melody to hang for a while. The beats are gradually built up again.

Trance tracks are usually long to facilitate the multiple series of peaks and drops so the musics goals can be achieved.

Trance music is mostly instrumental, though ethereal female vocals are sometimes used. Male vocals are sometimes incorporated, though rare.

The tempo of trance music is usually faster than house music.

It incorporates kick drums and other percussion elements on the downbeat and open hi-hats and snare rolls on the upbeat.

The tension is built through frequency and volume.

Trance tracks often use a central melody or hook as part of its main theme and are repeated throughout the entire track.

On each breakdown, a simplified form of the lead motif is introduced to give the listener a sneak peek of the climax.

In the climax, the main melody is revealed and mixed with the first part of the track.

Our brains are easily manipulated by the things we listen to.

Trance musics effectiveness relies on this principle. Its repetitive melody sends signals and creates a pattern in the brain.

This can calm its listeners or make them feel trippy. When you reach this state, your brain releases dopamine, also known as the happiness hormone.

Dopamine is also known as the rewarding hormone, so your brain may ask for more.

This is precisely why some people can get addicted to trance music and crave its trip on a daily basis.

Before you get your pitchforks out and start calling it the demons music, you should understand that trance music is neither harmful nor damaging.

In fact, it can be a useful soother to those struggling with panic attacks or anxiety.

The repeated melody in its tracks calms the brain and is proven to slow down your heart rate.

Every time we enter a discussion of who invented a specific music genre, the answer is never straightforward.

Music is a product of long developments and experiments. For instance, before the term trance music gains popularity, similar sounds with repetitive melodies have long existed.

These sounds were referred to as acid house or atmospheric house in those days.

It gained popularity in clubhouses where psychedelics like magic shrooms (psilocybin mushrooms) are often used.

A quick Google search inquiring as to the inventor of trance music would yield a range of answers because it is not that simple.

For example, you might find Klaus Schulze mentioned a German musician who experimented with minimalist music with repetitive sounds.

His 1988 album En=Trance is also solid evidence. However, some argue that Sven Vath is the true trailblazer for creating early trance tracks.

On the other side of the globe, fans of Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima claim otherwise, stating that these trance music artists have been developing trance soundtracks for video games for far longer.

Regardless of which person actually invented trance music, it is a general understanding that the genre was born in Germany and later spread through other European countries.

Detroit techno may have inspired German trance music artists and later added atmospheric ambiance and repetitive patterns to create the trance genre we all know and love today.

After trance music gained popularity, various sub-genres of music started appearing. Some of the known sub-genres of trance music are listed below:

Also known as the first wave of trance, these tracks are characterized by the use of the Roland TB-303 bass machine as the lead synthesizer.

The tracks are characterized by the emphasis on the melody and repetitive chords.

It also uses less percussion and more techno.

The tracks are highly melodic, often featuring soothing piano riffs.

Also known as dance core, it is a hybrid of dream trance, progressive trance, hard trance, and Eurodance music.

It is a fusion of electronic music and anthem trance. The main characteristic of these tracks is the cold and dark feeling with a grandiose synthesized melody.

Futurepop also incorporates vocals and lyrics on its tracks.

Named after Goa, India, the tracks feature a complex melodic form.

It takes influences from Indian classical music and instruments.

Hardstyle tracks are characterized by a mix of gabber, hardcore kick bass sounds, and spontaneous rhythmic changes.

Hard trance is aggressive but produced at a slower tempo.

Also known as Ibiza trance or Balearic beat, the tracks are influenced by various relaxed music genres such as the Ibiza chill-out style.

The tracks are more melodic and mellow and often feature seaside elements.

It is a new genre that can be described as a more minimalistic trance.

The tracks have more breakdowns than regular trance but with fewer acid sounds.

The chord progression is the main feature of the tracks.

Developed from Goa trance with a lot of spontaneous sounds and samples.

Darkpsy does not feature any vocals, but it is common to use speech samples from movies or other genre elements.

Also known as melodic psytrance, it involves futuristic melodies, electric guitar, and vocals. It is considered a more radio-friendly trance.

A fusion between techno and trance. Use mostly consistent bassline, drums, percussion, and ambient pad.

A broad term of trance with a full set of lyrics. The tracks can feature real singers or samples from other traditional pop music.

One of the most popular styles of trance inspired the birth of progressive trance and acid trance.

A blend of different music styles such as jazz, funk, and electronic but has the iconic trance repetitive pattern.

Trance music has its fair share of hardcore fans, so it is definitely not a dead genre. But compared to other musical genres, trance music cannot be considered a mainstream music genre anymore.

The number of people listening to trance music is extremely limited and segmented. There are a lot of explanations for this phenomenon.

The repetitive melody can be monotonous for some people, making them hesitant to give it a second try.

Meanwhile, more modern trance music that combines different elements and samples has a tough time sticking to people compared to other easy-for-the-ears electronic music.

From all of these phenomena, we can say that trance music is not for everyone.

Some people may try to listen to trance music, but the tracks will not make it to their regular playlist.

If you are an artist who wants to try to produce trance music, you can go ahead and produce your trance tracks.

There is still a chunk of listeners ready to enjoy your tracks.

But if you are looking for a major breakdown and huge popularity, you may want to try another genre.

Trance and techno are both electronic dance music (EDM) genres, but they have distinct differences in terms of sound, production style, and overall feel. Techno is characterized by a repetitive, hypnotic beat and a focus on rhythm and percussion. Trance, on the other hand, is characterized by a more uplifting, emotional sound, with a focus on melody and harmony.

Trance music has been shown to have an impact on the brain through its ability to alter brainwaves. The repetitive and hypnotic nature of trance music can induce a trance-like state, causing brainwaves to slow down and become more synchronized. This can result in a state of relaxation, increased focus and creativity, and altered perceptions of time and space.

Check out the additional resources we have on Trance Music:

Trance music is something we all know but rarely listen to. It is a part of the electronic music scene that has its own listeners, but it is not considered popular or mainstream music.

There is nothing wrong with it, though. Not every type of music is made for everyone or meant to be part of the mainstream.

This does not have to be a terrible thing either; the exclusiveness of trance music is preferable for many of its fans.

That being said, trance is a must-listen for those craving a new and different type of musical experience.

Nates first ever major EDM event was Hard Summer in 2016. After hearing Porter Robinson close out the festival, hes been attending live shows on a consistent basis. His favorite EDM genres are currently trance, drum and bass, and house.

/pol/ – Wikipedia

Posted: at 12:43 am

/pol/, short for "Politically Incorrect",[2][3] is an anonymous political discussion imageboard on 4chan.[4][5][6] As of 2022, it is the most active board on the site.[7][8][9] It has had a substantial impact on Internet culture while acting as a platform for far-right extremism;[10][11][9] the board is notable for its widespread racist, white supremacist, antisemitic, anti-Muslim, misogynist, and anti-LGBT content.[23] /pol/ has been linked to various acts of real-world extremist violence.[9][24][25] It has been described as one of the "[centers] of 4chan mobilization", a title previously considered to have belonged solely to /b/.[21]

Common /pol/ content involves discussion of history, far-right ideologies, hatred of black people, and current news. A 2020 report categorized about 36% of news sources frequently posted to the board by American users as "junk news", a category that includes sources considered to be propaganda, sensationalist, or conspiracy theory content. Outside of traditional news sources, users also commonly rely on alternative media such as YouTube commentary as a source of news.[26][7]

Flags are displayed on each post. A national flag corresponding to the user's geographic location (based on their IP address, which could be manipulated using a proxy server) may be displayed. Alternatively, users may select a "meme flag" (also referred to as a "troll flag"), corresponding to various political identifiers.[2][18][27] However, these are not common per amount of poststhe "Nazi" meme flag was the most commonly used meme flag in a 2020 analysis, while posts with an American geographic location were about 57 times more common (and appeared the most of any flag).[2]

Each post also has a unique ID attached, which is likewise associated with the user's IP address.[28] However, these unique IDs will only tend to remain attached to a user per a single thread, as they are not persistent between multiple threads.[29][30] Threads have a limited lifespan, effectively prioritizing newer content.[28]

Much of the content on /pol/ relies heavily on Internet memes to further spread ideas.[31][16] Many have questioned the sincerity of users on /pol/ as possible trolls.[32][33] According to Mic, "On a place like /pol/, there's no clear delineation between sincerity, irony and cynicism."[34] First Monday commented that "The creation of character-based archetypes is common on /pol/ and makes this online space semi-performative and semi-authentic."[18]

While 4chan's /pol/ board is the most popular board under the "/pol/" name, versions on other websites have existed. These include Kohlchan, 8chan (later 8kun), 16chan, Shitchan, and Endchan, with some less popular "/pol/" themed boards accessible through the Tor network on sites such as 9chan and Neinchan.[5] However, 4chan's /pol/ board has become increasingly "synonymous with 4chan as a whole", according to New Media & Society.[35]

Prior to the creation of /pol/, there were two boards intended for discussing news that had been added and removed from the site. The first of these was /n/, which was added on 8 April 2006. It replaced /n/'s previous topic of animals and nature, which was moved to the /an/ board. /n/'s topic was changed to transportation on 19 February 2008, without moving the news topic to another board, effectively removing it.[36][user-generated source]

Another news board, /new/, was later added on 25 January 2010. It was deleted a year later on 17 January 2011.[36][user-generated source] According to 4chan's creator and ex-administrator Christopher Poole, this was because it had "devolved into /stormfront/".[37][38][39] This was comparing /new/ to Stormfront, which is the oldest and largest Holocaust-denialist white supremacist site.[39][40] The /new/ board was the direct predecessor to /pol/.[41]

/pol/ was created on October 23, 2011.[21][42] According to Christine Lagorio-Chafkin, /pol/ was created by "4chan's founder [...] to siphon off and contain the overtly xenophobic and racist comments and memes from other wings of 4chan."[43] This has led to /pol/ acquiring the nickname of a "containment board", because its purpose is to keep far-right and generally political content off of 4chan's other boards.[39][12][10]

Screenshots of Trayvon Martin's hacked social media accounts were initially posted to /pol/ in 2015.[44][45]

After the Umpqua Community College shooting, /pol/ began attempting to circulate on social media claims that comedian Sam Hyde was the perpetrator of a mass shooting event or terrorist attack. They repeated this after several other mass shootings, in attempts to troll mainstream news outlets into reporting Hyde as the attacker.[46] According to BBC News, CNN mistakenly included Hyde's image on their coverage of the Umpqua shooting.[47] After the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, a Google search for a different man's name returned a /pol/ thread in the "top stories" section falsely identifying him as the shooter. A spokesperson for Google said that the thread had appeared because search queries and news about the man were rare, allowing for the thread to appear in results, but that the thread did not appear in broader searches about the Las Vegas shooting.[48][49]

On April 6, 2016, users on the board's /sg/ (short for Syria General) thread collaborated with a Russian Twitter account to locate an encampment of Syrian rebels.[50][51] The account then claimed to have forwarded the location to the Russian Ministry of Defense.[50] The board's users also allegedly located an ISIS training camp near Mosul, Iraq. The users coordinated on Telegram as well as on 4chan.[52]

In summer 2016, /pol/ users coordinated "Operation Google", a campaign to associate the name "Google" with the ethnic slur "nigger".[14][53] This was undertaken in response to Google's Jigsaw subsidiary developing Conversation AI, a tool made to recognize offensive language.[53][54]

One of the most popular memes found on the board during the period surrounding the 2016 US presidential election was Pepe the Frog, which has been deemed a hate symbol in some contexts by the Anti-Defamation League due to its use in uniforms, places, and people associated with Nazism, the Ku Klux Klan, and antisemitism.[55][56][57] Many /pol/ users favored Donald Trump during his 2016 United States presidential campaign.[12] Some right-wing memes about the presidential campaign originated on the board.[58] Upon his election, a /pol/ moderator embedded a pro-Trump video at the top of all of the board's pages.[59][60][61][62]

Users of /pol/ engaged in coordinated attacks on LaBeouf, Rnkk & Turner's HEWILLNOTDIVIDE.US, a 2017 performance art project made to protest Donald Trump's presidency.[39][63] Some users on the board suggested committing acts of violence against participants in the art project.[39] Users also organized the It's OK to be white poster campaign the same year.[64][65]

In 2017, users of /pol/ coordinated a campaign to convince mainstream news organizations that the OK gesture was a white power symbol; the OK gesture was later used meta-ironically by white supremacists.[66]

In October 2017, a tripcode user referred to as "Q" began posting on 4chan's /pol/ board in what would become the QAnon conspiracy theory and political movement. Q soon moved to 8chan.[67]

In 2019, 4chan and 8chan were temporarily blocked by internet service providers in Australia and New Zealand for containing videos of the Christchurch mosque shootings.[68][69] Before the shootings, the shooter posted on 8chan's /pol/ board.[5][70][71] The suspected perpetrators of the Poway synagogue shooting and the El Paso shooting also allegedly posted their manifestos there.[70][71] In late 2019, a poster campaign coordinated on the board received some local and regional news coverage. The posters stated, "Islam was RIGHT about women".[72]

In late February and early March 2021, users on /pol/ boosted a social media trend called "super straight", which they said was a new sexuality describing heterosexuals who would never have a sexual relationship with transgender people.[73][74] The trend began with a later-deleted TikTok video by a user who said he had created the term because he was tired of being called transphobic.[75][74] The Daily Dot stated that "trolls, bigots, and trans-exclusionary radical feminists" were "reframing their harassment of transgender people" through this trend.[76] The trend spread to other platforms as well, including Twitter, and 4chan users were eager to "red pill" those in the Generation Z age group, create division among LGBTQ communities, and use the language of LGBTQ rights to troll leftists. Some 4chan members used Nazi symbols in their symbolism, including the logo of Adolf Hitler's Schutzstaffel, which also used SS as an acronym. Colors associated with "super straight", often used in the form of flags, were black and orange.[22][76][74]

In a manifesto allegedly written by the accused perpetrator of the 2022 Buffalo shooting, the author said he was introduced to his far-right ideology (including a belief in the Great Replacement conspiracy theory) through browsing /pol/, beginning in May 2020.[77][19]

The day after the 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting, Representative Paul Gosar (R-AZ) falsely claimed that its perpetrator was a "transsexual leftist illegal alien" in a tweet, which was taken down two hours after it was posted.[78] The claim was based on a rumor started by an anonymous poster on /pol/, who posted the Reddit account of a transgender woman and claimed that she was the shooter; photos of the woman were widely shared on social media, including in conservative Facebook groups, where she was also erroneously identified as the shooter and harassed.[79][80]

/pol/ has been characterized as predominantly racist and sexist, with many of its posts taking explicitly alt-right and neo-Nazi points of view. In particular, the board is infamous for the prevalence of antisemitic threads and memes.[81][13][82][83][84][12] One common antisemitic meme on /pol/ is the Happy Merchant.[11][16][85] Southern Poverty Law Center regards /pol/'s rhetorical style as widely emulated by white supremacist websites such as The Daily Stormer; the Stormer's editor, Andrew Anglin, concurred.[13]

Many have speculated whether the website is kept online as a honeypot for far-right groups, or to monitor extremists.[86][87] In 2015, an Australian Department of Defence graduate used /pol/ to share classified information, only to be caught by another former Department of Defence worker browsing the site.[88] Within /pol/, suspected agents of various intelligence communities are called "glowniggers,"[89] commonly shortened to just "glowies,"[86] a reference to the computer programmer Terry A. Davis, who said the "CIA niggers glow in the dark, you can see them if you're driving, you just run them over."[86] Because of this, suspicious posters are said to be "glowing", and activity on the forum deemed similar to those of CIA agents is referred to as "glowposting".[86]

In 2020, several past and current moderators spoke to Vice Media's Motherboard about what they perceived as racist intent behind /pol/ and 4chan as a whole. They described how the manager of 4chan's volunteer "janitors", a moderator known as RapeApe, wishes to generate right-wing discussion on /pol/ and has dissuaded janitors from banning users for racism. Additionally, they noted how janitors were often fired whenever they held left-wing opinions. Hiroyuki Nishimura was described as letting RapeApe have full control of the site.[90]

A 2017 quantitative analysis found that /pol/ was an important influencer of news content on Twitter, with the board contributing 3% of mainstream news links and 1.96% of alternative news links on Twitter (as a fraction of all links co-appearing on Twitter, Reddit, and 4chan). The researchers concluded that "'fringe' communities often succeed in spreading alternative news to mainstream social networks".[91]

According to a 2017 longitudinal study, using a dataset of over 8million posts, /pol/ is a diverse ecosystem with users well-distributed around the world. The percentage of posts containing hate speech ranges from 4.15% (e.g., in Indonesia, Arab countries) to 30% (e.g., China, Bahamas, Cyprus). Elevated use of hate speech is seen in Western European countries (e.g., Italy, Spain, Greece, and France).[12] They also examined raids performed by /pol/ users against other platforms, particularly YouTube videos. They found that when a link to a YouTube video was posted on a /pol/ thread, an increase in hateful comments appeared on the video's comments section for the duration of that thread's existence.[92][93] Another study found that adjusted for Internet-using population per country, users were most commonly from Canada, Australia, the United States, Ireland and Croatia. Users from other countries in Europe were also found to be common.[2]

Following the announcement of a COVID-19 lockdown occurring in Wuhan, China, in January 2020, an international team of researchers noted an increase of anti-Chinese sentiment and anti-Asian slurs on /pol/ in reaction to the events surrounding the virus outbreak, in an analysis that also examined similar activity on Twitter.[94][15] This included calls for violence against Chinese people.[15] According to a 2020 report by the British charity Community Security Trust, many threads contain "explicit calls for Jews to be killed".[95]

A study with data collected from April 2020 to June 2020 and published in Perspectives on Terrorism in February 2021 analyzed the popularity and content present on different /pol/ boards. To analyze board content, they examined which word sets were most common per board. They found that schisms were characteristic of this subculture, with splinter communities being less popular and more extreme on average. For example, discussion on 8kun's /pol/ board contained more racial content than did 4chan's much more popular /pol/ board, which hosted racist content as well. Neinchan, hosted on the Tor network, was indicated as having among the most extreme /pol/ boards, albeit with low traffic. The researchers indicated that academic work examining this subculture of far-right imageboards was lacking.[5]

In a study published in January 2021, researchers found that there were escalating amounts of antisemitic rhetoric used on /pol/ after mass shooting events, particularly the Christchurch mosque shootings and the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting.[18] Another study found that activity on the board more generally tended to increase rapidly following mass shootings committed by right-wing extremists.[71]

A July 2021 analysis of climate change discussion on /pol/ found that there were large contingents of users who discussed the topic using antisemitic, racist and conspiracy theorist themes. It also found a growing trend of "climate nationalism" (i.e. the integration of nationalist and racist beliefs with narratives about the occurrence of climate change) among the board's users who participated in these conversations. These discussions still featured prominent amounts of debate concerning the scientific aspects of climate change, such as academic publishing and the validity of the scientific consensus on climate change. However, a trend was observed where, over time, this was a slowly declining feature of such discussions.[10]

A study published in New Media & Society in January 2022 discussed the interactions between /pol/ users and the researchers who study their community. The study observed the reactions of /pol/ users to a research workshop dedicated to studying them. The researchers suggested that studies that aim to learn about the /pol/ community and its users should take into account (for research design purposes) that they may be aware of observation by external entities, "rather than seeing it as a community that can be externally observed without consequence." They also suggested that, "[A]cademics may be influenced by knowing that 4chan is watching. /pol/, and associated communities, have long been associated with attacks on those trying to study or criticise them..."[11]

In June 2022, it was made public that a chat bot named "GPT-4chan" (or "gpt-4chan") was trained by Yannic Kilcher, a machine learning expert, using 134.5 million /pol/ posts. He allowed ten such bots to post on /pol/ without restriction for two periods of 24 hours, mimicking human users.[96][17][8] It made 15,000 posts during the first period: about ten percent of the total /pol/ posts during that time.[97][98] Overall, GPT-4chan had posted 30,000 times in 7,000 threads.[8] One iteration of GPT-4chan could be distinguished from most other /pol/ users by its Seychelles flag, displayed due to Kilcher's use of a proxy server. He used 4chan's paid "4chan Pass" service to bypass anti-spam restrictions (such as CAPTCHA).[8][99] The influx of GPT-4chan posts gained attention from /pol/ users, with some suspecting a government agent or a dedicated team of posters.[8][96][100] Some also suggested a bot could have been posting.[101][96][99] The experiment had some lasting impact on /pol/, with accusations between posters of bot use continuing past the experiment's run-time.[96][100][98] The bot frequently posted racial slurs and conspiracy theories.[97][101][99] GPT-4chan gained significant attention among media and artificial intelligence (AI) researchers.[96][102][3] Kilcher's GPT-4chan experiments, as well as his decision to release the underlying model for the bot online, were controversial.[96][3][8] A letter entitled "Condemning the deployment of GPT-4chan" was signed by hundreds of AI researchers and developers.[103][104] One AI ethicist with the Australian Institute for Machine Learning said that it violated "every principle of human research ethics".[96][97][8] A DeepMind researcher said GPT-4chan "contributed to 4chan's echo chamber" and that it was "not impossible that gpt-4chan pushed somebody over the edge in their worldview".[97][96][8] The Next Web commented that "[GPT-4chan] highlights AI's ability to automate harassment, disrupt online communities, and manipulate public opinion ... it also spread discriminatory language at scale."[8] MIT Technology Review said, "Considering the material it was trained on, this outcome was depressingly inevitable."[105] Hugging Face, the website where the bot's model was published, restricted access to it.[99] The site's CEO stated: "[T]he experiment of having the model post messages on 4chan was [in my opinion] pretty bad and inappropriate [...]". However, he also said that it "brought interesting insights into the limitations of existing benchmarks by outperforming the TruthfulQA Benchmark compared to GPT-J and GPT-3".[96][97] The Register added that, "GPT-4chan ... has some value for building potential automatic content moderation tools or probing existing benchmarks."[101]

Pros And Cons Of Polygamy (29 Things You Should Know About Polygamy)

Posted: at 12:38 am

Okay, the idea of polygamy might sound absurd in these modern times, but the truth is, the practice has been around since the beginning of time.

If what comes to mind when you hear polygamy is a marital arrangement of one guy with more than one wife, you are not wrong. That's because it's the most common type of polygamy around.

However, there are also polyandry and group marriages. The former is when a woman marries more than one guy, while the latter is a marital arrangement, where four or more adults are sexually and romantically involved with each other.

Believe it or not, polygamy has its advantages, just as there are tons of disadvantages. What's more, people are still engaging it now as it's still common in many parts of the world.

So, if you are wondering what polygamy feels like, perhaps you are considering the idea of being the new wife to an already married man, or your husband is making new marriage plans with another woman. You might want to know what's in store in terms of the pros and cons of polygamy.

Yes, if you are from the United States or some other civilized nations of the world, the idea of polygamy may sound strange to you, especially when you've never seen it before. However, it's the culture in many locations such as Africa and the Middle East. There are so many cultural practices that may seem weird elsewhere but are totally seen as a good thing where they are practiced.

In many of these locations, polygamy is not seen as victimization or abuse of the womenfolk. In fact, some women consider it as a good thing as they share the social status their husband has and may even encourage him to take more spouses. Just as many cultural practices, polygamy promotes and exhibits cultures of a location or area.

While the idea of a one-man/one-wife marriage makes better sense, it's not uncommon to find an adult woman without a guy. This situation is not because she chose the path of being single for life or became a widow, but its just that she has been unlucky. The fact is, some women never find their Prince Charming to put a ring on it."

So, instead of waiting for a single guy that may never come, settling to be a man's second or third wife might not be such a bad idea. Not only will such a woman be part of a "family, but" she'll also get the support she needs, especially when the guy is rich.

Yes, women can choose to get pregnant by any "John Doe" or approach a sperm bank if shes unlucky with finding a man to start a family with. However, these options aren't easy for women in many locations of the world like Africa. Apart from the backlash from parents, the societal stigma is another bummer.

The practice of polygamy naturally leads to a larger family compared to monogamous relationships. While a woman can have up to five or even six children, the possibility of having a larger family is even higher with more women in polygamy. A big family has its advantages. Your children will get to grow up in an environment with a greater connection with more children.

In monogamous relationships, an only child may only get to mingle with other kids and learn social skills when they get to school or other external playgroups. With the viral pandemic, keeping safe at home with a large family doesn't sound so bad.

Whether it's a one-man/multiple women relationship, polyandry, or group marriage, one of the benefits of polygamy (when looking at the pros and cons of the practice), is the low risk of getting bored. Research shows that one of the reasons for cheating in marriages is boredom. Most people search for more excitement outside their marriage since adultery isn't a legal or an open option.

So, with the multiple options available in polygamy, the chances of getting bored are lower. Trust me, the idea of not getting bored is not only for the guy, who technically has the option of having sex with multiple women.

As a woman/wife in a polygamy arrangement, you can interact with co-wives, their children, and so on. The bottom line is, maintaining the marriage no longer rests on two persons only since there are more people in the polygamy marriage setting. More could be the merrier, right?

Looking through these pros and cons, you'll undoubtedly find many undesirable cons, but you can't ignore this upside as a woman. You'd probably agree that men are guilty when it comes to leaving most of the house chores to their wives.

Even in this modern age, where gender inequality is being frowned upon, many domestic chores are still classified as feminine things. Being in a polygamous marriage can help ease the pressure of doing all the chores alone.

In a setting where there's an equal contribution of effort, the wives can alternate handling the house chores. It can become so convenient that one wife can rest from all chores in a particular week and resume subsequent weeks.

Sex keeps relationships together. In fact, many couples in therapy revealed that sex was the only glue that held their marriage for many years when there was no longer time to engage in other things that strengthen relationships. Therefore, it's not uncommon for arguments to erupt when a man isn't getting enough intimate time with his wife.

Sometimes, this situation may even push the partner away into the web of infidelity if it gets too much. However, there will probably be less argument in polygamy when a wife says no to her husband's sexual move because she's tired or not in the mood. After all, there's another wife under the same roof to satisfy his urges.

Now, I'm not trying to use this point to justify adultery or promote polygamy, but let's face it, the alarming rate of divorce proves that the soulmate ideology is laughable. It shows that marriages that work only do so because of a conscious effort to stay together from both parties.

Naturally, humans are a variety-loving species, which makes cheating on our spouses an easy option as continuous monotony is a problem for us. With polygamy, there's technically an acceptance of human nature by the parties involved, which may slightly reduce jealousy and the need for divorce.

As a woman, you naturally have a limited number of children you can give birth to in one lifetime. On the other hand, a guy can father as many children as possible as long as there's a willing female. With monogamy, a man with an excellent gene, for example, a genius gene, may never pass that gene to his progeny since the number of children in monogamous settings is usually few.

Even if he can, only a few children will likely get the genes since a monogamous family setting usually has few children. However, having multiple wives will increase the chances of many children, which will also increase the possibility of passing special genes to many progenies.

People marry for companionship, start a family, financial support, pressure from parents, etc. In Africa, many men who willfully engage in polygamy are usually financially stable. For a woman who cares more about taking care of her needs above other factors, a polygamy arrangement can be beneficial if the guy is wealthy.

Again, in Africa, many women with children from a previous marriage or relationship often consider polygamy as it does not only offer them financial support, but it also gives them a sense of being part of a family instead of being alone as getting married can be a little challenging with extra "baggage."

Furthermore, even if the husband isn't extremely wealthy, just as two is better than one, three or more financially stable people in a marriage setting will undoubtedly translate to financial security for the entire family.

If you are looking at polygamy's pros and cons from the angle of a guy enjoying multiple sex partners only, you'll be blinded to this advantage. Naturally, there are more women in the world than women than men.

What's more, there are places where the number of marriage-eligible women is significantly higher than their male counterparts. In such scenarios, polygamy can be a lifesaver. The men enjoy having multiple options, and the wives enjoy financial support and a family relationship that comes from being married.

Believe it or not, polygamy symbolizes the alpha male status in many ancient cultures. It's common among ancient kings and royal officials, but non-royal, rich men also emulate this practice. Like I said earlier, having many spouses is technically a symbol of being rich as such a man must have attained a level of financial stability.

These men may or may not be billionaires but are usually what you could call "capable." This may not be the case every time as some men only find themselves in polygamy due to being serial adulterers.

What's interesting is that the wives of such alpha males are also placed on the same pedestal society places their husbands, so both husbands and wives sometimes enjoy the praise that comes from polygamy.

While this point may not be true at all times, there are chances a guy free to have many spouses will have no reason to sneak around outside relationships. Apart from serial cheats and highly undisciplined men, a guy that has multiple wives or spouses technically has more excitement going on under one roof.

If he wants more, he'll just marry more wives without technically hurting anyone's feelings since the wives know the type of relationship they signed up for. The bottom line is, men sneak around because they are not permitted to have multiple wives. In polygamy, they don't have to.

The wives in a polygamy setting are almost always in competition, which can be a good thing as long as it's healthy. Apart from competing for their husbands attention, no wife will want to be seen as useless, ugly, fat, lazy, or nonchalant.

So, polygamy can sometimes cause the wives to be the best version of themselves. Even if a woman is working hard and being the best she can be for her husband, she may end up helping herself in a way.

If a woman doesn't want children at all and doesn't want to force her decision on her spouse, the pros and cons of polygamy can present a win-win situation to the marriage. Instead of divorcing each other, the guy can have another spouse who wants children.

Bear in mind that not all polygamy arrangement translates to the spouses living under one roof with the guy. In some cases, the guy acquires or rents multiple houses for his spouses, where he can visit and spend time with them separately.

While polygamy has many pros and cons, the cons can come in handy for a woman who suddenly takes up the decision to be celibate. Celibacy doesn't necessarily have to mean being alone, miserable, and without any male companion.

With effective communication, agreement, and zero jealousy, a man and woman can remain married while the celibate partner allows her husband to take another wife he can be sexually active with. As mentioned earlier, the new spouse can be at another location or under one roof as it is practiced in many African countries.

Polygamy undoubtedly has many pros, but the cons aren't pretty. One of the first cons we'll be looking at in this article is that the practice of a guy having more than one partner contravenes the right of women to be equal with their male counterparts in families.

Research from the United Nations shows that women in such marriages/families are prone to serious emotional abuse. Furthermore, it could mean negative financial consequences for her and her children, especially in cases of separation. The United Nations recommends that the union be completely prohibited or discouraged.

In places where polygamy is technically legal or allowed, there are usually no laws that accommodate the splitting of properties when divorce scenarios come up.

Since the guy has other spouses, the idea of splitting half of what he owns with one of the spouses that wish to leave cannot even be on the table. This condition will translate to a serious financial disadvantage for the woman and her kids. In fact, the spouse who chooses to leave may end up with almost nothing.

There's no subtle way to put it in this pros and cons article; most women in polygamous relationships or families are only doing a great job hiding how they truly feel. We humans might be a variety-loving species, but that doesn't change the fact that we are territorial.

No lady loves the idea of another female coming to invade her space or share her lover. Polygamy promotes jealousy within families. Besides, you don't need me to tell you how jealous can escalate into a much sinister feeling that could lead to hurting someone or even murder.

Research shows that humans are polygamous in nature, and that includes men and women. Religious doctrines, modern laws over the years contributed to the shift from polygamy to monogamy. But make no mistake, humans are still driven with the desire to enjoy multiple partners even outside their marriage.

Therefore, a case of one or more spouses engaging in sex outside a polygamy arrangement can infect everyone in the marriage with STDs. Not that this scenario can't happen in monogamy. The chances are relatively higher in polygamy since more people that can engage in indiscriminate sex are present.

If you consider going into a polygamy arrangement, you might want to get ready for many lonely nights. I mean, he's literally not yours only, so there'll be times where you'll need him, but you can't have him because he's with his other wife. It gets worse if you all live under one roof. I mean, what could be more heartbreaking than wanting to be intimate with "your partner," but you can't.

Not because he's sick or tired but because he's with someone else. The sad part is, it's not going to be a one-time scenario, especially when the other wife or wives are better than you sexually. Your husband may naturally want to be with the wife that excites him more even if there's a structured sex arrangement, like a timetable. Guess what, you can't complain since you signed up for it.

Polygamy undoubtedly favors men over women in many areas. As a woman, you need to know that it's a win-win situation for a man that has many wives at his disposal. Because there will be competition among the wives to please him, he probably won't care that much if any of his wives threaten to leave or throw tantrums for attention.

It still doesn't get better at all for ladies in polygamy. Well, that's the essence of a pros and cons article, to expose the good and ugly side. If you are the type that wants a man that'll go out of his way to please you, then think again. Being many may cause the man to have little or no reason to compromise.

The fact that you are not the only wife may naturally make him less sensitive since his other wives aren't throwing so many tantrums. Guess what? If you want to leave, he has a "backup."

In many regions where polygamy is practiced, men with multiple wives often deny their wives equal rights. In many cases, the women are not in the position to work, school, or improve themselves as their improvement may make them feel they no longer need someone.

Furthermore, their role is often limited to the kitchen, handling house chores, and birthing children. This is not only a problem for the wives, but the idea may also be naturally passed to the children raised in such families.

In Arab counties, polygamy is allowed on the condition that the man can treat and love his wives equally. Let's face it; chances are, a guy will have a favorite among his spouses, perhaps because she cooks well, pleases him more, hardly says no to sex, etc.

If this scenario exists, the least favorite wife may receive poor treatment or less attention. Altogether, these can promote jealousy among wives and even children, thereby creating enemies and unnecessary commotion in families.

Domestic tension and fights are common in all marriages. However, one of the cons of polygamy is that there'll be more tension. Fight between a man and his wife is almost inevitable in monogamy. Now, a setting with more than one wife, and perhaps, many children will naturally be prone to more arguments or discords.

The presence of a rival alone is enough reason for a fight. Now add cases of manipulation to get the guy's attention and other misunderstandings, then what you'll have is a recipe for regular "royal rumble."

Yes, the idea of large families can be beneficial to kids in certain ways; however, it can also be confusing. If you are looking at the pros and cons of polygamy for yourself or a friend, remember kids are fragile, and polygamy isn't as common as monogamy anymore.

Your kids might have a hard time understanding why his or her family is different from other families. It's best to avoid confusing kids as you don't know what outcomes it could lead to in the future. For example, your kids friends could bully them, make fun of them, which may affect them negatively.

Another con of polygamy is the high maintenance cost. Keeping more than one wife and having more than one child will naturally increase such a home's budget. To make matters worse, if a man is running a polygamy arrangement where the wives are living separately in order to avoid frequent domestic flights, that adds more to the overall domestic expense.

What's more, when there are scenarios of financial challenges, the polygamy-established home may be relatively harder to manage since there's more financial obligation.

The cons of polygamy go beyond when the marriage is still alive. In the event that the husband dies, the legal battle is always messy and long. There are some polygamy settings where the first wife married the husband legally. However, cultural or religious traditions made him bring in subsequent wives in a non-formal or non-legal way.

In such a scenario, the legally married wife usually wants to claim the lion's share for her and her children while the other wives will want an equal split. Altogether, it's an easy situation to avoid by not going into polygamy in the first place.

People go into polygamous marriages for different reasons: pressure from parents to get married, forced/arranged marriages, desperation to leave spinsterhood, etc. At first, it may seem fine. But as I mentioned earlier, we are jealous and territorial creatures and will, at the end of the day, prefer being with someone we can call our own.

When this reality sets in, it can make someone feel miserable, unhappy, and depressed, which may affect one's mental health. What's more, women will naturally feel powerless in a relationship where nearly all the cards are stacked against them. This may further lead to mental health breakdown.

By nature, polygamy encourages gender inequality, which often leads to trampling upon the rights of the women in the marriage. Furthermore, because cheating is common to both men and women, the presence of one or more members engaging in sex outside the arrangement can lead to infecting everyone.

The pros and cons of polygamy are numerous. While the pros can make it initially attractive for men and women alike, the disadvantages and the nature of humans will likely make it unsustainable. Jealousy is almost unavoidable, which can lead to a more sinister desire that could lead to dangerous consequences.

Polygamy can save a mature lady endless waiting for a man that'll take her to the altar. It can even offer financial security, especially when the man is rich. However, the cons make monogamy better. While many monogamous relationships can end in divorce due to infidelity or, it offers a platform of equality, fairness and has legal protection for involved parties under the law of virtually all countries.

Many African nations, such as Ghana, Cameroon, Senegal, etc., permit polygamy. While the practice may not be legal according to the African countries' official marriage laws, since bigamy is totally punishable, polygamy is also not frowned upon. It's a cultural/ traditional practice that is widely accepted. Also, India and most nations governed by Islamic laws are also polygamy-friendly.

Going through the pros and cons, the benefits are undeniable. They include saving a female who's desperate to marry the unnecessary waiting for "her man." Furthermore, polygamy helps in the expansion of man's gene pool, the reduction of boredom, and offers the excitement that comes with being sexually active with multiple women yet, technically, not hurt their feelings.

Polygamy clearly has its pros and cons. While both men and women can enjoy some benefits in a polygamy marriage, the one-man-multiple wives type marriage favors men more. It promotes gender equality and may psychologically affect women in those marriages in the long run. It might be best not to go into it since you can go the monogamous way.

I hope you enjoyed the article. Please, leave a comment and share it with your friends.
