Freedom of Speech Pros and Cons: What Both Sides Think
Posted: March 8, 2023 at 6:41 pm
Freedom of speech pros and cons are ripe for debate, despite this democratic principles cherished role in American politics. Heres what both sides think. To have stories like this and more delivered directly to your inbox, be sure to sign up for our newsletter.
Freedom of speech pros and cons evoke heated debate, despite its status as a cherished American value. Before analyzing contentious opinions, lets review the history of this fundamental ideal.
According to History.com, the ancient Greeks established freedom of speech as a democratic principle during the late 5th century. The ancient Greek word parrhesia means free speech, or to speak candidly. Athenians freely discussed politics, religion, and government criticism in some settings.
In the US, the First Amendment to the constitution ratified within the Bill of Rights in 1791 protects freedom of speech. The amendment simply states: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. The Supreme Court determines which types of speech are constitutionally protected in varied settings.
The United Nations also protects freedom of speech through its Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948. Still, sociopolitical conflict and social and digital technology advancements fuel clashes over parameters and benefits of free speech worldwide.
Now, lets dissect freedom of speech pros and cons, beginning with pros.
First, freedom of speech allows citizens to openly dissent against the government without fear of persecution. The First Amendment prohibits the US government from censoring opposition. Citizens are free to publicly share dissenting viewpoints and peaceably gather in protest. In contrast, authoritarian governments including absolute monarchies and communist states can limit, ban, and punish dissent.
Additionally, freedom of speech helps elicit social change. Abolitionism, womens suffrage, civil and LGBTQ rights, and other historical US social movements benefit from the ability to spread new ideas and gather in mass to demand change.
Freedom of speech and the press also help protect everyday citizens from the countrys elite. Private citizens, activists, and journalists use their voice to expose harmful activity by government officials, religious leaders, and corporate executives.
Another defined freedom of speech benefit is that not all speech is protected speech. In the US, speech that incites imminent and likely law violations presents a clear and present danger, and distributing obscene materials is prohibited.
Freedom of speech presents societal disadvantages as well.
First, freedom of speech can protect speech that others, including the majority, find offensive. For example, in 2017, the US Supreme Court unanimously reaffirmed that the US government may not restrict hate speech. Speech that demeans on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, disability, or any other similar ground is hateful; but the proudest boast of our free speech jurisprudence is that we protect the freedom to express the thought that we hate, Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the opinion.
Opponents also argue that free speech protections can stifle unity among the people. Chinas central government, for example, wields strong control over information shared through traditional and online news media and social media forums. This type of control makes it difficult for dissenting viewpoints to spread, fragment society, and spur organized social movements.
Lastly, freedom of speech makes it easier for false information to spread. In the US, slander, libel, and defamation are unlawful, but the First Amendment does not always account for false statements. Free speech protections can more widely disseminate false information, causing confusion and conflict especially during a crisis.
Free speech debates continue to flare locally and nationally.
One setting ripe for conflict: US college campuses. Summing up the situation, The Atlantic reports: While conservative students defend the importance of inviting controversial speakers to campus and giving offense, many self-identified liberals are engaged in increasingly disruptive, even violent, efforts to shut them down. Free speech for some, they argue, serves only to silence and exclude others.
Similarly, pundits on the left and right continue to debate the health of American free speech through combative cancel culture rhetoric. In recent years, numerous public figures face backlash for past and present comments and actions many deem offensive on social media. Conservatives warn that biased mass hysteria is sweeping the country, while liberals champion holding powerful individuals more accountable.
Additionally, at the highest level of politics, former Republican President Donald Trump waged battles on both sides of the freedom of speech debate. In 2019, the White House sought to investigate alleged anti-conservative bias among top social media companies. By the end of his presidency, however, multiple social media platforms permanently banned Trump due to violence incited during the January 6th Capitol insurrection.

10 Benefits of Space Exploration. (Including Medical and Economical)
Posted: March 6, 2023 at 12:48 pm
On April 12, 1961, the Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to journey to outer space. The age of space exploration started that day.
But why are we so interested in spending so much time, money, and resources to visit chunks of rock that are most likely empty? Why purposely go to environments that are dangerous and even deadly to humans?
Well, the answer is simple.
The benefits of space exploration outweigh the dangers of it. Becoming a space-faring civilization is the most important goal we must achieve for humanity to survive long-term.
In this article, well the major 10 benefits of space exploration. These include medical, technological, and economic benefits. They are listed in no particular order of importance.
NASA employs more than 18,000 people. SpaceX more than 12,000. And thats not counting outside contractors with whom those numbers at least double.
A lot of those jobs are positions for engineers, data analysts, mathematicians, physicists, astronomers, doctors, biologists, geologists, etc.
Space exploration is one of the industries that require the largest percentage of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) jobs.
These positions require highly qualified people to fill them but are also some of the highest-paid jobs in the market. The average entry-level STEM job pays approximately 26% higher than non-STEM fields for college graduates.
So, in summary, the growing space industry creates high-paying jobs.
In space, there are many valuable resources in big quantities that are scarce on Earth. For example, the asteroid Pysche 16 is estimated to contain over $700 quintillion dollars worth of gold. Enough to give each person on Earth more than $100 billion dollars. And thats not even close to being the most valuable object.
Economists have predicted the space mining industry will create the first trillionaire.
But the real benefit for the advancement of humankind might come from a much more unlikely substance. Water.
Learning to capture asteroids full of ice and crashing them safely, could help us solve one of the biggest challenges of inhabiting planets. The lack of liquid water.
The biggest dream some of us have is being able to take a trip to outer space. It is the ultimate destination. And because unfortunately, not many people can become astronauts, the rest of us will have to wait until the space tourism industry develops a bit more. It is still too expensive to go to space.
In 2021, a trip in one of the first trips offered by Blue Origin, the space company created by Jeff Bezos, was auctioned. The winner paid $28 million for the privilege to be one of the first space tourists.
As reusable rockets improve, the costs of these trips will become significantly lower. Hopefully one day theyll be within the reach for all of us.
The space tourism industry will indubitably create tens of thousands of jobs. From travel agents to pilots, to manufacturing jobs in the factories that make the rockets.
Studying the effects of space travel has helped us better understand the human body. For example, analyzing the effects of zero-gravity on blood circulation led to many discoveries on how arteries age and how to prevent some types of heart failure.
The experiments and measurements of bone strength and bone loss in astronauts have helped doctors better understand osteoporosis and other bone diseases.
The medical benefits of space exploration extend to pretty much every area of the human body. From muscle physiology to mental health.
One of the biggest challenges of space travel is solving problems when you cant send any new equipment, experts, or any other help. You have to fix things with whatever is available on the ship.
So what happens when theres a medical emergency on a spaceship?
This question has led doctors and engineers to develop tools and machines that can perform medical procedures and diagnostics remotely.
That same technology has many applications on Earth too. It allows doctors to assist patients that are located in remote rural areas or villages that are difficult to access.
All this knowledge that has been collected has yielded many developments in medical procedures.
Some examples of medical advancements that have been created thanks to space exploration are:
The NASA spinoff site keeps track of some of the health and medicine advancements that have been made possible thanks to space exploration.
The space race is one of the eras that has birthed the most technological advancements in the shortest period of time. It is probably only third behind both world wars. Throughout the years, companies have found consumer uses for many of these developments. To this day we still use them in our day-to-day lives without even knowing that some NASA engineers originally developed them for the Apollo program that took humankind to the Moon.
Listing all the technologies that have been derived from space exploration would be impossible, but here are some notable examples.
As you can see, it is important for us to keep pushing the limits of space exploration. Who knows what kind of new technologies could be developed that will make our lives easier in the future.
Space exploration sparks the curiosity of children who will become the next Elon Musk, Neil Armstrong, Sally Ride, or Guion Bluford.
It inspires students to dream and gets them interested in science and technology.
Not only is this good for them as STEM jobs can secure them a comfortably future, but it also helps humanity. It is through invention, research, and knowledge that humanity will be able to overcome the big challenges it will be facing in the future.
We only have one planet where we can live without the help of spacesuits. It would be nice to keep it in good condition until we can figure out a way to find other habitable planets or terraform others.
To do that, we need to learn more about the dangers of space. We know about extinction events like asteroids, but thats not the only potential threat to our survival. Solar flares, radiation, magnetic pole changes, and greenhouse effects are just some of the challenges Earth might face at some point.
Exploring space is the only way we will learn more about them so we can develop strategies and technology that could help save us from such events.
Theres one thing we are certain of about when it comes to space. If we humanity dont become a space-faring civilization. We will become extinct sooner or later.
Earth will eventually become uninhabitable and will probably be devoured by the Sun as it expands during the later years of its life cycle. And thats hoping nothing else happens before, like an asteroid impact, an ice age, atmospheric loss, climate change, or any other potential threats that could wipe us out, to put it bluntly.
Space exploration is not a luxury for the richest nations. It should be a worldwide priority and every country needs to come together in this effort. It is simply the only way we can hope to survive as a species.
We dont know if we have millions of years or hundreds of years before any of these events happen. So its better to get started today.

Covid-19 likely came from lab leak, says news report citing US energy …
Posted: at 1:19 am
The virus that drove the Covid-19 pandemic most likely emerged from a laboratory leak but not as part of a weapons program, according to an updated and classified 2021 US energy department study provided to the White House and senior American lawmakers, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.
The departments finding a departure from previous studies on how the virus emerged came in an update to a document from the office of national intelligence director, Avril Haines, the WSJ reported. It follows a finding reportedly issued with moderate confidence by the FBI that the virus spread after leaking out of a Chinese laboratory.
The conclusion from the energy department which oversees a network of 17 US laboratories, including areas of advanced biology would be significant despite the fact that, as the report said, the agency made its updated judgment with low confidence.
Conflicting hypotheses on the origins of Covid-19 have centered either on an unidentified animal transmitting the virus to humans or its accidental leak from a Chinese research laboratory in Wuhan.
The spread of Covid-19, just one in a line of infectious coronoviruses to emerge, caught global health bodies unawares in early 2020. It has since caused close to 7m deaths worldwide, according to the World Health Organization, and disrupted trade as well as travel.
Former US president Donald Trump politicized the issue, calling it the China virus, triggering a racialization of a pandemic that his Democratic successor Joe Biden has sought to avoid. But political polarization remains under the surface of efforts to establish its origins.
The energy departments updated findings run counter to reports by four other US intelligence agencies that concluded the epidemic started as the result of natural transmission from an infected animal. Two agencies remain undecided.
US officials, the Journal said, also declined to expand on new intelligence or analysis that led the energy department to change its position. They also noted that the energy department and FBI arrived at the same conclusion for different reasons.
The CIA remains undecided between leak and natural transmission theories, according to the National Intelligence Council study. But while the initial 2021 report did not reach a conclusion, it did offer a consensus view that Covid-19 was not part of a Chinese biological weapons program.
The national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, acknowledged on Sunday that there are a variety of views within US intelligence agencies on the issue.
Some elements of the intelligence community have reached conclusions on one side, some on the other, and a number have said they just dont have enough information to be sure, Sullivan told CNN.
But he said that the Biden administration has directed repeatedly every element of our intelligence community to put effort and resources on getting to the bottom of this question.
Sullivan added that Biden had specifically requested that the National Laboratories under the energy department be brought into the assessment. He wants to put every tool at use to figure out what happened, Sullivan said.
Right now there is not a definitive answer to emerge from the intelligence community on this question, he added, referring to eight of 18 agencies along with the National Intelligence Council that have looked in Covid-19s origins.
A previous report by the energy departments Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in May 2020 concluded that a lab-leak theory was plausible.
The updated, five-page NIC assessment, the Journal reported, was done in light of new intelligence, further study of academic literature and consultation with experts outside government and comes as Republicans in Congress press for more information.
A spokesperson for the energy department wrote in a statement that the agency continues to support the thorough, careful, and objective work of our intelligence professionals in investigating the origins of Covid-19, as the president directed.
Chinese officials have disputed that Covid-19 could have leaked from its labs, among them the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products.
According to the initial US 2021 intelligence report, Covid-19 first circulated in Wuhan, China, no later than November 2019, when three researchers from the Wuhan Institute of Virology reportedly involved in coronavirus research were sick enough to seek hospital care.

Classified Energy Department report finds lab leak likely cause of …

Feb. 26 (UPI) -- A classified report from the U.S. Energy Department has concluded that the COVID-19 pandemic was likely caused by a leak from a lab in China.
The report's conclusions were made with "low confidence" but come after other U.S. agencies have suggested that the SARS-CoV-2 virus had accidentally escaped from a lab in Wuhan where the first cases were reported.
Such reports from U.S. agencies are made on a three-tier scale based on the quality of intelligence assessments are made on, from low to high confidence. A low confidence finding means there is either not enough information or the information is not consistent enough to make a firmer determination.
The news was first reported by the Wall Street Journal and confirmed by The New York Times and CNN.
"The Department of Energy continues to support the thorough, careful, and objective work of our intelligence professionals in investigating the origins of COVID-19, as the President directed," an Energy Department spokesperson told CNN.
Officials who spoke to The New York Times did not disclose what new intelligence the U.S. Energy Department had acquired that had led the agency to its determination.
The Energy Department's report comes after the FBI also determined with a higher confidence rating that the virus leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in a report in October 2021 that four other intelligence agencies determined with low confidence that the initial COVID-19 infection "was most likely caused by natural exposure to an animal" infected with the virus, most likely a bat.
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday that divisions between the intelligence agencies remains and that the administration of President Joe Biden would share more information to Congress when it is obtained.
Theories that the virus may have leaked from the Wuhan lab have been made since the emergence of COVID-19 in 2020.
However, prominent health officials including Dr. Anthony Fauci - who served as the longtime head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases -- pushed back on such "conspiracy theories."
Fauci, who also served as the chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden, has played a key role in the United States response to the COVID-19 pandemic during Biden's administration and that of his predecessor, former President Donald Trump.
"Fabrications, conspiracy theories and outright lies are becoming commonplace from radical fringe groups as well as from people who you would hope would know better -- and you know who they are," Fauci said during a graduation speech at a New York City college last year.
"Yet segments of our society have grown increasingly inured by such falsehoods while the outrage and dissent against this alarming trend have been relatively muted and when voiced are regularly castigated."

The Antiwar Movement Roars Back to Life | CNSNews

On February 19th, the National Mall in Washington, DC saw its largest antiwar rally in 20 years. The speakers list included four former US presidential candidates and a broad and diverse collection of antiwar activists from beyond the left and right.
The aptly-named Rage Against War Machine rally drew thousands of attendees, however many pro-war advocates eagerly pointed out that it did not match in size some of the larger rallies against the Iraq war 20 years ago.
To that I say, who cares? The US mainstream media engages in war propaganda non-stop, with the only exception being Fox News Tucker Carlson. So I think its a miracle anyone had the courage to travel to the heart of the war machine in Washington, DC to make their voices heard! We dont need a majority to fight back an educated and dedicated minority will do quite nicely. And we certainly had that at the rally!
As I sat in the green room waiting to speak, I had the opportunity to visit with former Democrat presidential candidates Tulsi Gabbard and Dennis Kucinich and former Green Party candidate Jill Stein. Political commentators Jimmy Dore and Chris Hedges were there, along with many leading and wellspoken libertarians. Everyone backstage carried the same message: we must put aside our differences to build a new, broad coalition against this war!
I believe the antiwar movement is starting to catch fire both at home and overseas. The DC rally was followed by much larger antiwar rallies in Paris, Berlin, London, and elsewhere.
Several recent polls, including by Pew and AP, show that American support for Ukraine is evaporating. Even in the EU, new polls show a public turning sharply against their governments support for the war. According to a recent Ipsos poll, less than half of Germans support continuing to send weapons to Ukraine. Change is in the air.
The US mainstream media is clearly getting nervous that its control over the narrative is also evaporating. How do we know theyre nervous? They have turned up their lies and slanders of antiwar rallies and voices.
Rachel Maddow, who fed America a steady stream of Russiagate lies for the past six or so years, let loose with a slanderous blue streak about the Rage Against the War Machine rally. Literally everything Maddow said in her post-rally rant was objectively false and her mischaracterization of rally participants as weird was devious. She falsely claimed that the rally was full of white supremacists, Proud Boys, and anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists.
No one who was at the rally would have had any idea what she was talking about. But her job was not to describe the rally, it was to defame it. What does Maddows hysterics about the rally show? They are nervous. It shows that the mainstream media, despite having near-total power, is afraid. They are afraid they are losing the narrative. Good. Its about time. Lets hope that more Americans begin to rage! Rage against the war machine!

Ron Pauls Retirement Advice: Do This One Thing ASAP
Posted: at 1:18 am
The following article by Ron Paul is sponsored content by Birch Gold.
I have a message for you that could be described as blunt.
If you are nearing your retirement age, all of the hard-earned money you have put away for your future could now be in danger.
Why? Because the worst financial disaster in history is unfolding before our eyes. Call it the everything bubble, call it the death of the dollar, call it whatever you want. Most Americans are struggling to make ends meet because of whats happening.
And the elites know things are only going to get worse. For example, the UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres recently said, We are looking into the eye of a Category 5 hurricane. Our world is plagued by a perfect storm on a number of fronts.
Meanwhile, the government thinks the solution is more taxes and more money printing. And dont forget, the far-left Democrat in the White House has targeted retirees multiple times with INCREASED TAXES.
Clearly this situation cannot continue. But heres the crucial question: Do you really believe Biden wont be able to indirectly get your retirement savings? By continuing to print dollars and eventually driving America into hyperinflation?
If this happens, it would be disastrous for everyone with a stock and dollar-based retirement account. But the good news is, you are not powerless! There is one strategy that can protect your retirement savings from stock crashes, inflation, and Biden.
Its a powerful gold-based retirement strategy that tens of thousands of Americans have used this year. Best of all, there are NO penalties or TAXES when you transfer money into the account.
And its all explained in this FREE Info Kit on Gold.
This no-cost guide, which comes from my friends at Birch Gold Group, reveals why Gold IRAs are exploding in popularity right now. And this information is FREE, with no strings or obligations attached.
So click here to request your FREE Info Kit on Gold before Biden decides your savings are better spent funding his left-wing agenda.
