Genetic Disorders: What Are They, Types, Symptoms & Causes
Posted: January 31, 2023 at 5:32 pm
OverviewWhat are genetic disorders?
Genetic disorders occur when a mutation (a harmful change to a gene, also known as a pathogenic variant) affects your genes or when you have the wrong amount of genetic material. Genes are made of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), which contain instructions for cell functioning and the characteristics that make you unique.
You receive half your genes from each biological parent and may inherit a gene mutation from one parent or both. Sometimes genes change due to issues within the DNA (mutations). This can raise your risk of having a genetic disorder. Some cause symptoms at birth, while others develop over time.
Genetic disorders can be:
There are many types. They include:
Chromosomal disorders
Multifactorial disorders
Monogenic disorders
Genetic disorders may also cause rare diseases. This group of conditions affects fewer than 200,000 people in the U.S. According to experts, there may be as many as 7,000 of these diseases.
Rare genetic disorders include:
To understand genetic disorder causes, its helpful to learn more about how your genes and DNA work. Most of the DNA in your genes instructs the body to make proteins. These proteins start complex cell interactions that help you stay healthy.
When a mutation occurs, it affects the genes protein-making instructions. There could be missing proteins. Or the ones you have do not function properly. Environmental factors (also called mutagens) that could lead to a genetic mutation include:
Symptoms vary depending on the type of disorder, organs affected and how severe it is. You may experience:
If you have a family history of a genetic disorder, you may wish to consider genetic counseling to see if genetic testing is appropriate for you. Lab tests can typically show whether you have gene mutations responsible for that condition. In many cases, carrying the mutation does not always mean youll end up with it. Genetic counselors can explain your risk and if there are steps you can take to protect your health.
If theres a family history, DNA testing for genetic disorders can be an important part of starting a family. Options include:
Most genetic disorders do not have a cure. Some have treatments that may slow disease progression or lessen their impact on your life. The type of treatment thats right for you depends on the type and severity of the disease. With others, we may not have treatment but we can provide medical surveillance to try to catch complications early.
You may need:
There is often little you can do to prevent a genetic disorder. But genetic counseling and testing can help you learn more about your risk. It can also let you know the likelihood of passing some disorders on to your children.
Some conditions, including certain rare and congenital diseases, have a grim prognosis. Children born with anencephaly typically survive only a few days. Other conditions, like an isolated cleft lip, do not affect lifespan. But you may need regular, specialized care to stay comfortable.
When you are living with a genetic disorder, you may have frequent medical needs. Its important to see a healthcare provider specializing in the condition. They are more likely to know which treatments are best for your needs.
You may also benefit from the support of others. Genetic disorders often have local or national support groups. These organizations can help you access resources that make life a little easier. They may also host events where you can meet other families going through similar challenges.
A note from Cleveland Clinic
Genetic disorders occur when a mutation affects your genes or chromosomes. Some disorders cause symptoms at birth, while others develop over time. Genetic testing can help you learn more about the likelihood of experiencing a genetic disorder. If you or a loved one have a genetic disorder, its important to seek care from an experienced specialist. You may be able to get additional information and help from support groups.

Snowy Monday in Las Vegas led to closures and delays, wind advisory in …
Posted: at 5:27 pm
(KTNV) It was an eventful morning on the streets of Las Vegas with the arrival of a late-January snowfall.
With the snow came a few road closures and advisories, including the shut down of the Red Rock Scenic Loop "due to hazardous winter weather conditions," the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada reported.
Officials at Mt. Charleston advised the Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway would have a delayed opening on Monday "to plow the lot due to snow accumulation."
Those planning to explore Mt. Charleston should remember 4-wheel drive and chains or snow tires are required on all roads in the Spring Mountains, officials advised.
Officials in Nye County advised that snow chains were required to travel state Route 160, the Spring Mountain Pass from Pahrump to Las Vegas.
"NDOT is working on getting the snow plows out to clear the road," sheriff's officials said.
Areas about 3,000 feet in elevation were most likely to get a sprinkling of the white stuff, KTNV meteorologists reported.
Viewers shared photos of snow falling in the southeast valley, near Boulder City, and in Pahrump.
This break from Las Vegas' typical winter weather will be short-lived, the KTNV team says. Snowfall in the valley is likely to cut off around 12 p.m.
On top of the snow conditions, the National Weather Service for Las Vegas issued a wind advisory that can make waters at Lake Mead difficult to navigate in.
The advisory is said to last until Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Experts say north winds can reach 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected. The strongest winds are expected to occur south of the Hoover Dam.
NWS says the areas impacted is the San Bernardino County of California. In Nevada, the impacted area is Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
Unsecured objects can be impacted by the strong winds.
"Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result," said officials with NWS. "Strong wins over the open waters will make the lake water rough and hazardous, and may result in high waves which may tip or swamp smaller aircraft."

Las Vegas weather for Monday, Jan. 30, 2023 | Las Vegas Review-Journal
Posted: at 5:27 pm
It may not quite be hell freezing over, but the Las Vegas areas Monday snowfall turned the desert landscape into a winter wonderland many of the areas kids had never experienced before.
Measurable snow was reported in some Henderson and Anthem neighborhoods. Flurries also were spotted in Centennial Hills.
At McCullough Vista Park in Henderson, eighth-grader Ayden Soto was making snowballs and launching them at his friends. He said he was shocked when he first saw the accumulated snowfall.
I was looking at the weather and it said it was going to be 40 degrees and rainy, which isnt, like, snow, Soto said. I just thought (the snow) was really cool, really awesome.
Meanwhile, sixth grader Daylen partnered with a friend to build a snowman. He said although he had seen snow when visiting other cities, this was the first time hes witnessed it in Southern Nevada.
Its fun and you get to throw snowballs at your friends and stuff, said Daylen, who didnt want to give his last name. I wish it snowed more.
At nearby Mission Hills Park, a handful of Mannion Middle School students slid down a snowy hill, some on sleds, others with their bodies. Despite most of them being snow rookies, they also successfully built a snowman.
We (had) learned how to build a snowman in class, one said. That was very helpful.
OCallaghan Park didnt get snow, but it did get rain. So it didnt attract any children, but resident Tanya Dahar, decked in a hat and coat, was out walking her brothers dog.
I love (the rain), she said. We dont see it very often. so its like an adventure.
The weather caused several closures Monday, including the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive and the Spring Mountain Visitors Gateway at Mount Charleston.
According to the National Weather Service, there were 3.6 inches of snow in the Sheep Range and Spring Mountain areas.
A winter weather advisory ran through 7 p.m. Monday for higher elevations northwest of the Las Vegas Valley. High temperatures Tuesday are expected to only reach 45 to 50 degrees in Las Vegas and across the Mojave Desert zones, which is about 10-12 degrees below normal.
Temperatures are forecast to gradually rise to the low 60s by the coming weekend.

Massive Las Vegas Strip Project Faces Another Major Setback
Posted: at 5:27 pm
Instead of a place for has-beens and nostalgia acts, the Las Vegas Strip now legitimately hosts major headliners -- albeit mostly ones past their creative peak. Yes, Wayne Newton and Donny Osmond still have homes on the Strip (at Caesars Entertainment's (CZR) - Get Free Report Harrah's and Flamingo respectively), but those "only in Vegas" acts have been joined by major names.
Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Adele all have major long-term residencies on the Strip. They're joined by other big names that are both current acts like Bruno Mars, Maroon 5, and Usher. In addition, nostalgic but still huge artists including Garth Brooks and Gwen Stefani have Las Vegas Strip homes as do many other big names.
Caesars, MGM Resorts International (MGM) - Get Free Report, Wynn Resorts (WYNN) - Get Free Report, Resorts World Las Vegas, and other Strip casino operators have also made Las Vegas the de facto capital of the electronic dance music (EDM) world. Pretty much every big-name DJ plays the Strip regularly both at nightclubs and on the city's day club scene.
But, while those are some major names -- and near the top-level performers in the world -- the biggest acts generally don't set up shop with a Vegas residency. BTS played multiple shows at Allegiant Stadium and Taylor Swift will on her coming tour, but neither will actually take up residency on the Strip.
The same might be said for Bruce Springsteen, Foo Fighters, the Eagles, the Rolling Stones, and the handful of other acts that are sort of too big to play a Las Vegas Strip residency. A new venue -- the Madison Square Garden (MSGE) - Get Free Report Sphere -- might be able to change that, but the unique concert hall's first big-name act may now be in doubt.
MSG Sphere Las Vegas
The Las Vegas Strip has never seen anything like the MSG Sphere. As it's being built near the Venetian, it looks like an alien space ship being reconstructed on land. Once it's complete, it will be an entirely new entertainment venue designed to attract major names for Las Vegas residencies.
Once complete, the unique project will be "a 366-foot-high steel sphere that will "be covered with about 580,000 square feet of fully programmable LED panels, forming the largest LED screen on Earth," according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "The 17,500-seat venue will have a high-resolution display plane, which is larger than three football fields, the worlds largest beam-forming audio system with more than 160,000 speakers and it will deliver superior sound to every seat in the house."
And while it's expected to open in the second half of 2023, financial problems and construction over-runs have made the opening date murky. That may cost the venue its rumored first headliner, U2.
While Billboard reported earlier this year that U2 would be the first act to play a residency at the Sphere, the lack of an opening date for the venue has cast that into major doubt. Lucas Watson, who serves as the Sphere's President, addressed plans for the venue Jan. 23 at Preview Las Vegas at Las Vegas Convention Center.
"After his presentation in the new Convention Center expansion, Watson sidestepped questions about U2 opening The Sphere this September. We are now informed the bands opening dates are being reviewed, pending progress on the $2.18 billion project construction," the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
Watson did say that more news would be coming soon on the first act to take up residency at the Sphere. He also shared that he expects between four and six residency headliners to call the venue home each year.
Each artist will play roughly 10 to 12 shows, depending on their availability and scheduling, Watson said. But thats the rough order of magnitude.
MSG has been contemplating multiple options to pay for cost over-runs on the Sphere, including spinning off the company's other live venue assets as well as the Radio City Rockettes into a separate company.

Rockall Basin – Wikipedia
Posted: at 5:25 pm
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bathymetric feature northwest of Scotland and Ireland
The Rockall Trough (Scottish Gaelic: Clais Sgeir Rocail) is a deep-water bathymetric feature to the northwest of Scotland and Ireland, running roughly from southwest to northeast, flanked on the north by the Rockall Plateau and to the south by the Porcupine Seabight. At the northern end, the channel is bounded by the Wyville-Thomson Ridge, named after Charles Wyville Thomson, professor of zoology at the University of Edinburgh and driving force behind the Challenger Expedition. At the southern end, the trough opens into the Porcupine abyssal plain. The Rockall Basin (also known as the Hatton Rockall Basin) is a large (c. 800km by 150km) sedimentary basin that lies beneath the trough. Both are named after Rockall, a rocky islet lying 301.4km west of St Kilda.
Features of the Rockall Plateau have been officially named after features of Middle-earth in the fiction of J. R. R. Tolkien, e.g. Eriador Seamount, Rohan Seamount, Gondor Seamount, Fangorn Bank, Edoras Bank, Lorien Knoll, Isengard Ridge.[1]
In February 2000, the RRS Discovery, a British oceanographic research vessel sailing in the Rockall Trough encountered the largest waves ever recorded by scientific instruments in the open ocean, with a SWH of 18.5 metres (61ft) and individual waves up to 29.1 metres (95ft).[2]
The nature of the crust beneath the Rockall Trough has long been a matter of debate. Originally thought to be oceanic crust it is now generally considered to be highly stretched continental crust, although some groups of researchers continue to favour either oceanic or transitional style crust, particularly at the southern end of the basin.
The Rockall Basin forms part of a chain of highly extended Mesozoic rift basins between the Charlie-Gibb and Senja Fracture Zones, that includes; the Faroe-Shetland Basin, the Mre Basin, and the Vring Basin. There are indications that the Rockall Basin developed within an earlier rift system, which is likely to be of Triassic to Middle Jurassic in age, by analogy with the nearby Slyne-Erris Basins. The age of the main rift phase in the Rockall Basin is strongly debated, with Late Jurassic, Early-, Mid- and Late Cretaceous all being suggested.
One of the features of the Rockall Trough is the Anton Dohrn Seamount. It lies 600 metres (2,000ft) beneath the surface, rising 1,500 metres (4,900ft) from the surrounding seabed. The plateau formed approximately 55 million years ago, a continental fragment formed between Greenland and Europe when the ancient continent of Laurasia was split apart by plate tectonics.[3] The Rockall Islet is the highest point of the plateau, rising 21 m above sealevel. It is made of a type of peralkaline granite.
To date, there has been comparatively little drilling to explore for oil and gas within the Rockall Basin and only two discoveries have been made, Benbecula in the northern UK Rockall (Shell originally Enterprise Oil) and Dooish in the northern Irish Rockall (Shell originally Enterprise Energy Ireland). The discoveries show that, at least locally, there is a working petroleum system. Rights to exploit these resources are disputed between the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands (a possession of Denmark). This topic is addressed in Rockall Bank dispute.
The area supports cold water coral colonies and carbonate mound fields such as the Logachev Mounds; the trough supports a rich deep sea fish population.[5] There are also unusual aggregations of deep-sea sponges, in particular the encrusting sponge and bird's nest sponge. A range of other species are found amongst the sponges beds, which are considered biodiversity hotspots. For the bird's nest sponge associated species include ascidians, Foraminifera, polychaetes and burrowing anemones, whilst for the encrusting sponge beds species such as anemones, ascidians, crinoids and ophiuroids are found. The area is also home to brittlestars: filter feeders which live on the seabed.[6]
In 2014 an area of 1,256 square kilometres (485sqmi) of the Hatton-Rockall Basin was declared a Nature Conservation Marine Protected Area.[4] The MPA is designated a Category IV protected area by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.[7]

Rockall Exped – An epic expedition to raise 50,000 for charity
Posted: at 5:25 pm
Expedition Radio Operator
Adrian "Nobby" Styles will be joining the expedition to operate a HAM radio on Rockall island. Originally from Dartford, Kent, Nobby first became interested in amateur radio during his teen years tinkering with a CB radio and soon became addicted to the hobby.
As far as ham radio broadcasts go, rockall is the pinnacle. It is perhaps the rarest and most difficult of places to broadcast from in the whole world, and he is extremely excited to be able to broadcast from the rock, as are the amateur radio community and iota chasers!
Nobby will land with the team on the first day, and for 24 hours will be answering transmissions from radio operators around the world, before granting them their own custom rockall post card (or qsl card) which nobby has kindly designed for us, in exchange for donations for our great causes.
For the amatuer radio community this opportunity is practically once in a lifetime With only a couple of Operations to Rockall and with less than 400 claimed QsL's.
