Donald Trump announces 2024 re-election run for president

Posted: at 11:50 pm

PALM BEACH, Fla. Former President Donald Trump announced that he is running for the 2024 Republican nomination for president, seeking to stage a dramatic return to the White House after having lost his bid for re-election to Joe Biden in 2020.

Trump, a Republican and the leader of the "Make America Great Again" movement, announced his third presidential bid on Tuesday during a speech at his Mar-a-Lago, Florida, home after having teased a bid since leaving office in 2021.

"In order to make America great and glorious again. I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States," Trump said Tuesday evening to a crowd of supporters.

"But just as I promised in 2016, I am your voice. I am your voice. The Washington establishment wants to silence us, but we will not let them do that. What we have built together over the past six years is the greatest movement in history because it is not about politics. It's about our love for this great country, America, and we're not going to let it fail," said Trump.

2024 WATCH: MEET THE POTENTIAL GOP PRESIDENTIAL CONTENDERS

"I am running because I believe the world has not yet seen the true glory of what this nation can be. We have not reached that pinnacle, believe it or not," he continued, blaming President Biden for the current state of the nation. "In fact, we can go very far. We're going to have to go far first. We have to get out of this ditch. And once we're out, you'll see things that nobody imagined for any country. It's called the United States of America. And it's an incredible place."

Trump first won the presidency in 2016 against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. If he is elected again, he would become only the second president to retake the White House after having been ousted, a feat achieved by Grover Cleveland in 1892 after he had lost the presidency to Benjamin Harrison in 1888. A victory would make Trump the 45th and the 47th president.

Since his loss, Trump has challenged the legitimacy of the 2020 election results, repeatedly claiming the race was "rigged," due to the COVID pandemic-era process of mail-in ballots. Trump falsely claimed the election was stolen, and his legal team filed a slew of lawsuits in battleground states across the nation.

Trumps announcement comes one week after the 2022 midterm elections in which Republicans did not obtain an anticipated "red wave" of victories. Democrats kept control of the Senate and if Republicans are able to capture a majority in the House, it is expected to be slight. The former president was heavily involved in the midterms, throwing his support behind Republican candidates across the nation. During the primaries, the majority of Trump-endorsed candidates were victorious, becoming the GOP nominee in their races.

The economy, which has been a top issue for voters during the 2022 midterm election cycle amid record-high inflation, was strong under Trumps presidencywith an increase in middle-class family income, the lowest unemployment rate in half a century and unprecedented job growth.

The stock market hit record highs, with the Dow closing above 20,000 for the first time in 2017 and topping 30,000 in 2020, and the S&P 500 and NASDAQ also hitting record highs.

Trump also worked to cut red tape and reduce regulations facing American businesses and workers, working to put in place policies to bring back supply chains from overseas, in line with his "Make America Great Again" and "America First" messaging.

As for trade relations, Trump immediately withdrew from the Trans-Pacific Partnership and ended the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in January 2017, replacing it with the existing United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which included new protections for American manufacturers and workers.

IF TRUMP ENDORSED GOP NOMINEES LOSE IN NOVEMBER, DOES THE FORMER PRESIDENT TAKE A 2024 HIT?

Trump also signed an executive order making it government policy to "Buy American and Hire American," and took action to stop outsourcing of jobs overseas.

Another issue for Americans during the midterm election cycle has been energy and record-high gas prices.

Under the Trump administration, Trump ensured that the U.S. was the number one producer of oil and natural gas in the world, but President Biden reversed some of those policies and refocused on clean energy.

Meanwhile, the Trump administrations foreign policy message was one that focused on "peace through strength."

Trump withdrew from the Iran Nuclear Dealwhich the Biden administration began taking steps to re-enter when he took office in 2021.

Trump held a historic summit with Kim Jong Un in June 2018he was the first sitting U.S. president to cross the demilitarized zone into North Korea. ICBM testing was paused during the Trump administration, but North Korea did continue to test for short and medium-range ballistic missiles. North Korea has been ramping up its ballistic missile testing under the Biden administration.

TRUMP DROPS NEW HINTS ON POSSIBLE 2024 PRESIDENTIAL RUN: 'WE WERE SO CLOSE'

Regarding the Middle East, the Trump administration brokered the Abraham accords, a "historic peace agreement" between Israel and the United Arab Emirates that normalized relations and created bilateral agreements regarding "investment, tourism, direct flights, security, telecommunications, technology, energy, health care, culture, the environment, the establishment of reciprocal embassies, and other areas of mutual benefit."

In 2018, the Trump administration moved the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem a relocation long debated in Washington and one that showed the U.S. officially recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Trumps administration also rebuilt the military, with more than $2.2 trillion in defense spending, delivering pay raises for service members and their families. Trump's administration also created a new branch of the military the Space Force.

Trump appointed and had three conservative justices confirmed to the Supreme Court during his presidency Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.

Meanwhile, Trumps administration worked to make communities safer, signing the First Step Act into law--the first landmark criminal justice reform legislation passed to reduce recidivism and help former inmates successfully rejoin society.

Trump's presidency, from 2017 to 2021, was clouded by investigationsseveral into whether he colluded with Russia to influence the 2016 election, some focused on his finances and others that led to impeachment, making him the first president in United States history to have been impeached twice.

Trumps post-presidential life has been reminiscent of his days in the Oval Office, marred by probes, which the former president and his allies said were just part of an effort by his political opponents to prevent him from running for re-election in 2024.

The former president is currently under federal investigation by the Justice Department for allegedly mishandling classified documents under the Presidential Records Act. A federal judge appointed Judge Raymond Dearie to serve as special master and review the thousands of records seized by the FBI. Trump and his legal team have argued that none of the documents taken from his Mar-a-Lago home were classified.

TRUMP LOVES THE IDEA OF TESTIFYING BEFORE JAN. 6 COMMITTEE: SOURCE CLOSE TO THE FORMER PRESIDENT

The FBI conducted an unprecedented pre-dawn raid of his private residence at Mar-a-Lago in August, alleging that the former president had classified national security information.

The investigation comes amid a criminal investigation into Trump and his familys business practices by New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Trump raised $10.2 million in August after the FBIs unprecedented raidthe most Save America PAC had raised in a month since Trump was in office. As of mid-October, Trumps Save America PAC had just under $100 million cash-on-hand.

Also this summer, a federal appeals court paved the way for the House Ways and Means Committee to finally obtain Trumps tax returns from the Internal Revenue Servicesomething the panel has been trying to obtain since 2019, under a law that permits the disclosure of an individual's tax returns to the congressional committee.

Trump may seek emergency intervention measures from the Supreme Court in an attempt to temporarily block any release of these tax recordswhich likely will come under renewed scrutiny now that he decided to run for a third time.

When Trump first took office in January 2017, the FBI was in the middle of conducting a counterintelligence investigation into whether candidate Donald Trump and members of his campaign were colluding or coordinating with Russia to influence the 2016 election. That investigation was referred to inside the bureau as "Crossfire Hurricane," and began on July 31, 2016.

That investigation was opened, despite then-CIA Director John Brennan briefing then-President Obama on July 28, 2016 about a purported proposal from one of Hillary Clinton's campaign foreign policy advisers "to vilify Donald Trump by stirring up a scandal claiming interference by the Russian security service."

Special Counsel Robert Mueller ultimately was appointed to take over the investigation, but, after nearly two years, Muellers investigation, which concluded in March 2019, yielded no evidence of criminal conspiracy or coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian officials during the 2016 presidential election.

Special Counsel John Durham is currently investigating the origins of the FBI's Trump-Russia probe.

Mueller's investigation yielded no evidence of criminal conspiracy or coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian officials during the 2016 presidential election.

Weeks after Muellers probe was complete, Trump had a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during which he pressed Zelenskyy to launch investigations into the Biden familys actions and business dealings in Ukrainespecifically Hunter Bidens ventures with Ukrainian natural gas firm Burisma Holdings. Hunter Biden, at the time, was, and still is, under federal criminal investigation for his tax affairs, prompted by suspicious foreign transactions.

The presidents request came after millions in U.S. military aid to Ukraine had been frozen, which Democrats and some witnesses have cited as a quid pro quo arrangement. Democrats also claimed Trump was meddling in the next presidential election by asking a foreign leader to look into a Democratic political opponent.

Trumps conversation with Zelenskyy prompted a whistleblower complaint, which led to the House impeachment inquiry, and ultimately, impeachment proceedings in the Senate.

The House voted to impeach Trump in December 2019 on two counts abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The Senate voted for acquittal in February 2020.

Meanwhile, on Jan. 6, 2021, pro-Trump rioters breached the U.S. Capitol during a joint session of Congress to certify the Electoral College results in favor of President Biden. Trump was permanently banned from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube after the riot.

The House of Representatives then drafted articles of impeachment against him again, and ultimately voted to impeach him on a charge of inciting an insurrection for the Jan. 6 Capitol riotmaking him the first and only president to be impeached, and ultimately acquitted, twice in history.

Trump's legal team denounced the proceedings as an unconstitutional "sham impeachment" against a private citizen, driven by Democrats' "hatred" for Trump and desire to silence a political opponent.

The Senate voted to acquit, but had Trump been convicted, the Senate would have moved to bar the 45th president from holding federal office ever again, preventing a 2024 White House run.

The Future Of Virtual Reality (VR) – Forbes

Posted: at 11:47 pm

You might think youve experienced VR, and you might have been pretty impressed. Particularly if youre a gamer, there are some great experiences to be had out there (or rather, in there) today.

The Future Of Virtual Reality (VR)

But over the next few years, in VR, as in all fields of technology, were going to see things that make what is cutting-edge today look like Space Invaders. And although the games will be amazing, the effects of this transformation will be far broader, touching on our work, education, and social lives.

Todays most popular VR applications involve taking total control of a users senses (sight and hearing, particularly) to create a totally immersive experience that places the user in a fully virtual environment that feels pretty realistic.

Climb up something high and look down, and youre likely to get a sense of vertigo. If you see an object moving quickly towards your head, youll feel an urge to duck out of the way.

Very soon, VR creators will extend this sensory hijacking to our other faculties for example, touch and smell to deepen that sense of immersion. At the same time, the devices we use to visit these virtual worlds will become cheaper and lighter, removing the friction that can currently be a barrier.

I believe extended reality (XR) a term that covers virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) will be one of the most transformative tech trends of the next five years. It will be enabled and augmented by other tech trends, including super-fast networking, that will let us experience VR as a cloud service just like we currently consume music and movies. And artificial intelligence (AI) will provide us with more personalized virtual worlds to explore, even giving us realistic virtual characters to share our experiences with.

VR in education and training

VR is already making great inroads into education, with a large number of startups and established companies offering packaged experiences and services aimed at schools. Engages platform is used by the likes of Facebook, HTC, and the European Commission to enable remote learning. And one study published in 2019 found that medical students trained using VR were able to carry out certain procedures quicker and more accurately than peers trained using traditional methods.

These new methods of teaching and learning will become increasingly effective as new technologies emerge. One that is likely to make waves is the Teslasuit, which uses a full-body suit to offer haptic feedback, enhancing the immersion through the sense of touch. It also offers an array of biometric sensors enabling the user's heartbeat, perspiration, and other stress indicators to be measured. The suit is already used in NASA astronaut training, but its potential uses are unlimited.

For training, it could be used to safely simulate any number of hazardous or stressful conditions and monitor the way we respond to them. For example, Walmart has used it to train retail staff to work in Black Friday situations, instructing them on how to best to operate in busy shop environments with long queues of customers.

As well as training us for dangerous situations, it will also drastically reduce the financial risks involved with letting students and inexperienced recruits loose with expensive tools and machinery in any industry.

VR in industry and work

The pandemic has changed many things about the way we work, including the wholesale shift to home working for large numbers of employees. This brings challenges, including the need to retain an environment that fosters cooperative activity and the building of company culture. Solutions involving VR are quickly emerging to help tackle these.

Spatial, which creates a tool best described as a VR version of Zoom, reported a 1,000% increase in the use of its platform since March 2020. In total, the value of the market for VR business equipment is forecast to grow from $829 million in 2018 to $4.26 billion by 2023, according to research by ARtillery Intelligence.

Communication giant Ericsson (which has provided Oculus VR headsets to employees working from home during the pandemic for VR meetings) has talked about creating the "Internet of Senses." This involves developing projects involving simulating touch, taste and smell, and sensations such as hot or cold. It predicts that by 2030, we will be able to enter digital environments that appear completely real to all of our five senses simultaneously.

This will lead to the advent of what it calls the dematerialized office where the office effectively vanishes from our lives as were able to create entirely interactive and collaborative working environments wherever we are in the world, simply by slipping on a headset and whatever other devices are needed for the task at hand.

VR in socializing

There are already a number of VR-based social platforms that allow friends or strangers to meet up and chat or play in virtual environments, such as VR Chat, Altspace VR, and Rec Room. As with VR in other fields, the growing level of immersion that is possible thanks to new technological developments will make them more useful and more attractive to mainstream audiences throughout the coming decade.

This year Facebook, which has long had a stake in VR due to its acquisition of headset manufacturer Oculus, unveiled its Horizon platform. Currently, in beta, it allows people to build and share collaborative online worlds where they can hang out, play games, or work together on collaborative projects.

While we will always make time for meeting up with friends and loved ones in the real world, as our working and school lives become increasingly remote, its likely that more of our social interaction will move into the online realm, too. Just as we are no longer barred from careers or educational opportunities due to an increasingly virtualized world, we will have more meaningful ways to connect with other humans as technology improves in this area.

And of course VR in games and entertainment

The killer app for VR is gaming, and the reason the technology is developing at the pace it is, is due to the large market of people willing to spend money on the most impressive and immersive entertainment experiences.

Sandbox VR operates real-world VR centers where equipment that it simply wouldnt be practical or affordable to use in our homes offer some of the most immersive experiences yet created.

Using full-body haptic feedback suits, they offer five games one licensed from Star Trek that let groups cooperate or battle it out in deep space, aboard ghostly pirate ships, or through a zombie infestation.

CEO Steve Zhao describes the experience his company has created as a "minimal viable Matrix or holodeck." In a recent conversation that you can see here, he told me, "the outcome is that you believe in the world it's very real, and in order to progress, you and your friends have to communicate and work together. One of the best ways to describe it is that you are the stars inside your own movie that's basically what we created."

It makes sense in many ways that there could be two markets for consuming VR entertainment at least in its early days. While the most immersive and impressive tech is big, expensive, and requires technical skill to operate, it's more viable to offer it at dedicated venues rather than as an in-home experience. As with movies, the stay-at-home offerings will provide something perhaps a little less spectacular but more convenient at least until we get to the point where we can have full-size Star Trek holodecks in our own homes!

Andrew Kaufman on the false germ paradigm – Jerm Warfare

Posted: at 11:44 pm

The Covid-era is a lesson on why it matters to test what we think we know about viruses and germs, argues Andrew Kaufman. Germ Theory is like climate science in that it is established dogma that may not be questioned; it is unscientific and illogical; and it is heavily funded by big industries.

Challenging paradigms is what critical thinking is about.

Germ Theory is one such paradigm that must be critiqued and falsified because, well, thats what science is about. If something cant be falsified, then were off to a good start. But if something can be falsified, then were off to an even better start.

To understand Germ Theory, a good rule of thumb is to get a bit of historical context.

Whereas most Americans probably have heard of Louis Pasteur (18221895), it is doubtful that many are familiar with the name and work of Antoine Bchamp (18161908). The two nineteenth-century researchers were scientific contemporaries, compatriots and fellow members of the French Academy of Science, but key differences in their views on biology and disease pathology led to a prolonged rivalry both within and outside of the Academy.

Bchamp was the more brilliant thinker, but Pasteur had political connections, including Emperor Napoleon III. Reportedly not above plagiarising and distorting Bchamps research, Pasteur achieved fame and fortune largely because his views were in tune with the science and the politics of his day. Meanwhile, mainstream medical historians relegated Bchamps ideasnot as attractive to conventional thinkersto the intellectual dustbin.

Pasteurs promotion of germ theory (a flawed notion that he did not so much discover as repackage) has remained dear to pharmaceutical company executives hearts up to the present day, having laid the groundwork for synthetic drugs, chemotherapy, radiation, surgical removal of body parts and vaccines to become the medicine[s] of choice. The unshakeable belief that there is one microbe for every illness is so ingrained as the controlling medical idea for the Western world that competing ideas about disease causation still have difficulty gaining traction.

I recommend reading the book Bechamp or Pasteur?: A Lost Chapter in the History of Biology, which is a wonderful biographical account of the two aforementioned scientists.

A number of my guests including Andy have spoken about all of this. Mark Baileys insights are concise and easy to follow, as are those of Mike Stone. Denis Rancourts analyses are a bit more detailed and analytical. David Rasnicks critiques are also a bit more detailed and analytical, such as his breakdown of the (lack of) existence of HIV.
