William Shatner: My Trip to Space Filled Me With Overwhelming Sadness (EXCLUSIVE) – Variety

Posted: October 13, 2022 at 1:32 pm

In this exclusive excerpt from William Shatners new book, Boldly Go: Reflections on a Life of Awe and Wonder, the Star Trek actor reflects on his voyage into space on Jeff Bezos Blue Origin space shuttle on Oct. 13, 2021. Then 90 years old, Shatner became the oldest living person to travel into space, but as the actor and author details below, he was surprised by his own reaction to the experience.

So, I went to space.

Our group, consisting of me, tech mogul Glen de Vries, Blue Origin Vice President and former NASA International Space Station flight controller Audrey Powers, and former NASA engineer Dr. Chris Boshuizen, had done various simulations and training courses to prepare, but you can only prepare so much for a trip out of Earths atmosphere! As if sensing that feeling in our group, the ground crew kept reassuring us along the way. Everythings going to be fine. Dont worry about anything. Its all okay. Sure, easy for them to say, I thought. They get to stay here on the ground.

During our preparation, we had gone up eleven flights of the gantry to see what it would be like when the rocket was there. We were then escorted to a thick cement room with oxygen tanks. Whats this room for? I asked casually.

Oh, you guys will rush in here if the rocket explodes, a Blue Origin fellow responded just as casually.

Uh-huh. A safe room. Eleven stories up. In case the rocket explodes.

Well, at least theyve thought of it.

When the day finally arrived, I couldnt get the Hindenburg out of my head. Not enough to cancel, of courseI hold myself to be a professional, and I was booked. The show had to go on.

We got ourselves situated inside the pod. You have to strap yourself in in a specific order. In the simulator, I didnt nail it every time, so as I sat there, waiting to take off, the importance of navigating weightlessness to get back and strap into the seat correctly was at the forefront of my mind.

That, and the Hindenburg crash.

Then there was a delay.

Sorry, folks, theres a slight anomaly in the engine. Itll just be a few moments.

An anomaly in the engine?! That sounds kinda serious, doesnt it?

An anomaly is something that does not belong. What is currently in the engine that doesnt belong there?!

More importantly, why would they tell us that? There is a time for unvarnished honesty. I get that. This wasnt it.

Apparently, the anomaly wasnt too concerning, because thirty seconds later, we were cleared for launch and the countdown began. With all the attending noise, fire, and fury, we lifted off. I could see Earth disappearing. As we ascended, I was at once aware of pressure. Gravitational forces pulling at me. The gs. There was an instrument that told us how many gs we were experiencing. At two gs, I tried to raise my arm, and could barely do so. At three gs, I felt my face being pushed down into my seat. I dont know how much more of this I can take, I thought. Will I pass out? Will my face melt into a pile of mush? How many gs can my ninety-year-old body handle?

And then, suddenly, relief. No gs. Zero. Weightlessness. We were floating.

We got out of our harnesses and began to float around. The other folks went straight into somersaults and enjoying all the effects of weightlessness. I wanted no part in that. I wanted, needed to get to the window as quickly as possible to see what was out there.

I looked down and I could see the hole that our spaceship had punched in the thin, blue-tinged layer of oxygen around Earth. It was as if there was a wake trailing behind where we had just been, and just as soon as Id noticed it, it disappeared.

I continued my self-guided tour and turned my head to face the other direction, to stare into space. I love the mystery of the universe. I love all the questions that have come to us over thousands of years of exploration and hypotheses. Stars exploding years ago, their light traveling to us years later; black holes absorbing energy; satellites showing us entire galaxies in areas thought to be devoid of matter entirely all of that has thrilled me for years but when I looked in the opposite direction, into space, there was no mystery, no majestic awe to behold . . . all I saw was death.

I saw a cold, dark, black emptiness. It was unlike any blackness you can see or feel on Earth. It was deep, enveloping, all-encompassing. I turned back toward the light of home. I could see the curvature of Earth, the beige of the desert, the white of the clouds and the blue of the sky. It was life. Nurturing, sustaining, life. Mother Earth. Gaia. And I was leaving her.

Everything I had thought was wrong. Everything I had expected to see was wrong.

I had thought that going into space would be the ultimate catharsis of that connection I had been looking for between all living thingsthat being up there would be the next beautiful step to understanding the harmony of the universe. In the film Contact, when Jodie Fosters character goes to space and looks out into the heavens, she lets out an astonished whisper, They shouldve sent a poet. I had a different experience, because I discovered that the beauty isnt out there, its down here, with all of us. Leaving that behind made my connection to our tiny planet even more profound.

It was among the strongest feelings of grief I have ever encountered. The contrast between the vicious coldness of space and the warm nurturing of Earth below filled me with overwhelming sadness. Every day, we are confronted with the knowledge of further destruction of Earth at our hands: the extinction of animal species, of flora and fauna . . . things that took five billion years to evolve, and suddenly we will never see them again because of the interference of mankind. It filled me with dread. My trip to space was supposed to be a celebration; instead, it felt like a funeral.

I learned later that I was not alone in this feeling. It is called the Overview Effect and is not uncommon among astronauts, including Yuri Gagarin, Michael Collins, Sally Ride, and many others. Essentially, when someone travels to space and views Earth from orbit, a sense of the planets fragility takes hold in an ineffable, instinctive manner. Author Frank White first coined the term in 1987: There are no borders or boundaries on our planet except those that we create in our minds or through human behaviors. All the ideas and concepts that divide us when we are on the surface begin to fade from orbit and the moon. The result is a shift in worldview, and in identity.

It can change the way we look at the planet but also other things like countries, ethnicities, religions; it can prompt an instant reevaluation of our shared harmony and a shift in focus to all the wonderful things we have in common instead of what makes us different. It reinforced tenfold my own view on the power of our beautiful, mysterious collective human entanglement, and eventually, it returned a feeling of hope to my heart. In this insignificance we share, we have one gift that other species perhaps do not: we are awarenot only of our insignificance, but the grandeur around us that makes us insignificant. That allows us perhaps a chance to rededicate ourselves to our planet, to each other, to life and love all around us. If we seize that chance.

NASA Astronaut Scott Kelly speaks at UW on his Year in Space – University of Wisconsin-Madison

Posted: at 1:32 pm

Scott Kelly, a former NASA astronaut and retired United States Navy Captain, speaks from the stage to the near-capacity crowd during a public lecture and discussion event held in Shannon Hall inside the Memorial Union at the University of WisconsinMadison on Oct. 4. Colton Mansavage

One hundred forty-three million miles, 520 days and four flights thats what it took for NASAs Scott Kelly to set a new record in 2016 for most days spent in space by an American astronaut during his final flight when he spent a year on the International Space Station.

Kelly has since retired from NASA, and these days he travels more modest distances, crisscrossing the country to inspire young scientists.

Kelly detailed his life story and his year in space for a University of WisconsinMadison audience recently as a part of the Wisconsin Union Directorates Distinguished Lecture Series.

If we can dream it, we can do it, Kelly said to a packed house at Memorial Union. The sky is definitely not the limit.

Kelly answered questions from audience members, including Rachel Rauth, a fifth year kinesiology student, during a the lecture. Colton Mansavage

Despite his many honorable distinctions as a U.S. Navy pilot and astronaut, Kelly stressed that his life has not been a nonstop success story. He spoke candidly about his academic struggles growing up and the substantial effort he put into his naval flight training. Kelly described his mindset going into every new opportunity, knowing the possibility of failure. Without that perspective, he shared, he would never have gone to space, much less broken spaceflight records. Reflecting on his own determination to persevere through uncomfortable challenges, Kelly encouraged the audience to take risks, be willing to make mistakes and even be willing to fail. In his experience, the willingness to risk failure is what distinguish those who are truly successful.

Kelly meets with a group of student reporters following the lecture. Colton Mansavage

Extended time in zero-gravity has drastic effects on the body, and indeed, enduring prolonged exposure to microgravity and the radiation of space was a central component of Kellys mission. He was specifically chosen because his twin brother Mark also worked at NASA. As twins, Mark and Scott have nearly identical genetics, so when Scott went up to space, Mark stayed behind and acted as a control to see exactly how the year in space affected Scott. By comparing the two brothers, scientists sought to learn how the body changes after prolonged space travel, in preparation for one day sending astronauts to Mars.

The genetic results were quite surprising. Normally as humans age, the ends of their chromosomes, called telomeres, shrink. Scientists hypothesized that given his lengthy stay on the International Space Station, Scotts telomeres would shorten more compared to Marks.

Despite predictions, Scotts telomeres elongated by an average of 14.5%. However, the telomeres reverted to shorter lengths almost immediately after he returned to earth. NASA researchers are still seeking an explanation for this surprise finding. Additionally, Kelly noted that 7% of my gene expression changed.

The effects on his overall physical condition were also profound, if less surprising. It was really hard to just stand up. My joints and muscles were really stiff, he said. You know, had I not been in space for a year, I probably would have gone to the emergency room. Thats how bad I felt. I was nauseous. I was tired. I was dizzy.

A lot more work has to be done before humans embark for Mars, but Kelly has paved the way for this research to continue.

While he takes pride in doing his part to send humans to a new planet, Kelly made a point to emphasize the need for environmentalism on Earth.

We have to take care of this planet. Im a big believer in going to Mars, but I hate to tell you, were not all walking to Mars, and Mars is not the lifeboat for planet Earth, Kelly said. No matter how bad we screw this place up. Its always gonna be easier to live here.

A new perspective on his home planet may be the most profound, lasting impact of his mission.

When you look at planet earth from space, you dont see political borders, and you realize its not that big of a planet, Kelly said. Were all in this thing called humanity together and big problems take cooperation to solve.

In Her Work, Susan Quilleash Examines the Intriguing Facets of Space Travel, Extraterrestrial Life, and L – Benzinga

In Mootoa's Moons: The Other Woman, a bright and healthy love story in space was realized with enthralling romantic twists that specifically highlighted gender norms and LGBTQ issues.

The book is a space opera about the Mootoa, a planet far away in another star system where non-humans led more prosperous lives. Three comparable engines were in high demand as soon as Earth learned of interstellar travel to distant stars. The crew of the spaceship Lorili inexplicably perished. One of them was the captain's wife, Jacob Grimm, also known as Jake.

The quest of Captain Jake and Lorili to find new engines and an engineer in Mootoa, the only location where they could be found, was then followed in Mootoa's Moons: The Other Woman.Evidently, the Earthmen knew very little about Mootoa. More importantly, the people of Mootoa didn't think that Earthmen could handle the responsibilities of running a spaceship, especially with a male human as the captain. As Captain Jake worked to establish his credentials, he was also confronted by a fresh engineer from Mootoa who wanted to join his crew, get his favor, and have her life become intertwined with his as they continued their adventure through space and in love.

Readers seeking interstellar romance and adventure with fascinating mechanical insights are advised to pick up this book. Readers looking for LGBTQ romance will find this to be an interesting read as well.

Cyberpunk 2077 Tips To Break Hearts, Romance Everyone After All The Updates – Kotaku

Posted: at 1:31 pm

Are you sick of wandering the streets of Night City alone, with only the sights and sounds of gratuitously over-sexualized advertisements to keep you company? Has someone caught your eye? Someone youd like to be more than just chooms with? Even if youve ventured into Night City before, its worth jumping back in for that special someone. The many updates the game has received have left the romance options and paths intact, but dateable NPCs will sometimes send you some new texts post-update. And given the strict limitations on NPC preferences for gender and sexuality, Cyberpunk is a must-replay game if you want to explore all the moments of lust and love.

Most of the four main romance options in Cyberpunk 2077 follow the same pattern. Youll meet someone pretty in one of the main quests, then youll have the option to tumble down a trail of Side Jobs with them before getting the big obvious moment where, well, you know.

For the most part, the romance options in this game are pretty straightforward. Dialogue options will usually indicate that youre gonna make a move, and in general so long as youre picking the nicer and more flattering dialogue options, youll be fine. But if youre like me and are hopelessly oblivious to romantic hints even when theyre staring you in the face, this guide will point out the things to do and things not to do if you want to dock with your NPC of choice.

And while most of the romance options typically involve the big bold yellow dialogue choice, I do recommend taking the time to select as many of the blue-themed dialogue options as make sense for pursuing some romance. Get to know your love interest! Theres a lot of dialogue in this game and the romance plots are more worth your time if youre actually role playing and are getting to know these characters.

This guide will contain a handful of spoilers as the romance options ripen toward the end of the story. Before each of the juicy details, Ive included a list of quests that chart out the romance path. You might meet these characters in a different quest, but these are the ones where you have the chance to make your moves. If you want to avoid the spoilers, go ahead and jot down those quest names and explore your love interests at your own pace. With that out of the way, lets get on with it.

Quest flow: Automatic Love, The Space in Between, Disaterpiece, Double Life, Both Sides Now, Ex-Factor, Talkin bout a Revolution, Pisces, Pyramid Song

Of the four main romance options in Cyberpunk 2077, Judy is clearly the best. Not only do you meet her first, shes tightly integrated into the story from the getgo, and her narrative feels like it warrants the limited time you have left with Johnnys biochip eating away at your mind. If you want a hacker gf who knows how to tune an erotic braindance and have a V with a feminine body type and voice, heres how.

V meets Judy early on in Act One as a part of the quest that basically turns to shit real fast. Dont worry about any dialogue options with her until the end of the Disasterpiece quest where you can choose to let her know about the rockstar that lives in your head. Maybe better to get that out now rather than later. Either way wont harm your chances.

An in-game day later and Judy will reach out to you, unlocking the Both Sides, Now sidequest. Dont worry about dialogue choices here. RP as you see fit.

After some time passes, Judy will reach out to you again. Agree to help her in her quest to overthrow Woodman, the manager of the Clouds dollhouse. Follow along with the beats of the quest until you get to the Talkin bout A Revolution. Here youll get the choice to join in on the liberation of some sex workers. Pick You can count on me / Out of the question (when she offers to pay you) Im all right now / Forget about it. Its passed. / [Lean] Sure thanks (when she offers to let you sleep on her couch). Eat the breakfast she leaves for you the morning after.

After some more waiting, a text and a call from Judy, youll get into the Pisces quest. When meeting with Maiko, be sure to select Lets do this / Whore the other two? / Do my best. Jack em out. / Hold on. Think youve gone too far / [Draw weapon] Lets cut to the quick. After that, youll shoot up a bunch of dudes before choosing the following dialogue options with Maiko: What? / Cant know that for sure.

When chatting with Judy downstairs, pick Clouds is free, thats whats important and shell give you a kiss.

A full in-game week later, Judy will want to meet with you for what is one of my favorite sidequests in this whole game, Pyramid Song. This quest trades shootouts for dialogue, story, and exploration, and Im all here for it. Be sure to pick [Stand] Hell yeah, Im in when Judy asks you to go diving. Pursue the quest options as youd like. To continue down the romance path, agree to spend the night with her. Ignore Johnnys protests. Guys a gonk. Pick [Stand] Why not. When she asks to stay the night.

After powering up the generator, pick [Knock] Did you say something? Enter the bathroom, followed by [Sit] Were still synced / (Kissing lips) [Touch] It is ours. Enjoy what follows.

As you two gal pals sit out on the dock and talk about what last night meant, be sure to pick The beginning of something amazing when she asks what the previous evening meant. Thus concludes the romance path with Judy.

Rockerboys always cause problems.Screenshot: CD Projekt Red / Kotaku

Quest flow: Holdin On, Second Conflict, A Like Supreme, Rebel! Rebel!, I Dont Wanna Hear it, Off the Leash, Boat Drinks

Playing a game in which youre constantly struggling against the presence of an unwanted persona from a self-destructive male rockstar who was totally out of his mind is never not going to be a weird experience for me. But unlike me, if your V is actually a guy (masculine body type with masculine voice only for this option), and youre into guys, romance time with rockerboy Kerry Eurodyne on the beach could be in your future.

Fair warning about boys who play guitar though. Theyre trouble.

Youll first meet Kerry in a Johnny Silverhand flashback where I think its clear that these two were totally fucking. Thank god the broader rock and metal scene of the dystopian future isnt as homophobic as the present one.

If Kerrys caught your eye, though, youll have to wait until Act Three before you can really start down his romance path. Like many of the romances in this game, the choices youll need to make should be fairly obvious, but here are the details to pay attention to.

Your V will meet Kerry in the Holdin On Side Job. Follow the natural progression of events in this Cyberpunk twist on The Blues Brothers. Youll get the band back together, even play a rock concert with a guitar that has peculiar construction choices for rock and metal. (Seriously, how do you even palm mute with that bridge cover? That thing is literally an anti-riff machine. Okay, Ill stop.)

Hanging out with Kerry will involve some crimes and property damage (what did I tell you about rockerboys?) but eventually youll land on the Off the Leash Side Job. The final scene of this quest has you and Kerry hanging out on a balcony where youll get the option to be supportive of him in some key dialogue options thatll seal the deal with you two.

Save when you start walking out to the balcony so you have a return point in case you fumble your attempts to woo Kerry. Any of the [Lean] dialogue options will work, but Glad we got a moment to ourselves is likely the sweetest. From there, pick: You can tell me / But you did make it / Maybe its time you stopped being afraid and then pick one of the [Kiss] options and there ya go. A sweet touch of romance while looking over the hellscape that is Night City.

Thats just a kiss, though. If you want to go further, wait for Kerry to give you a call while you run some other errands in Night City. Youll get the Boat Deal Side Job where youll have the chance to get a little more intimate.

First youll chat Kerry up a bit on the boat while he plays some guitar that, once again, has questionable design decisions. (You would never make frets out of wood and that is definitely not a vibrato bridge). I dont condone smashing guitars, but be sure to choose [Stand] Lets play! as Kerry gets up to do some spontaneous interior decorating. Choose Lets rip the whole fuckin boat apart and enjoy the sexy catharsis of destroying a music execs property. They fucking deserve it.

After a pretty wild sex scene, be sure to choose [Hug] Pencil me in when chilling on the beach with Kerry.

Quest flow: Ghost Town, Lightning Breaks, Life During Wartime, Riders on the Storm, With a Little Help From My Friends, Queen of the Highway, We Gotta Live Together

If your V has a masculine body with any voice, and a lady with a talent for motor vehicles is your type, then Panam Palmer might be someone worth chatting up. Panams quests are some of the most fun in the game, so even if youre not pursuing her, these are well worth your time.

Youll meet the ex-Nomad gal in Act Two in the Ghost Town quest. After some violence and explosions, you can meet up with her at a motel where youll get the option to room with her. Youll have to be a little explicit in your desires. Choose Maybe we get just one room and follow that up with Not quite what I had in mind as a response to her mention of two twin beds.

After this, follow along with the natural sequence of events, shooting and blowing shit up together. During the Life During Wartime quest, be sure to ask for Panams help in finding Hellman with the I gotta get Hellman. Will you help? dialogue option while the two of you chat with Mitch. This has nothing to do with mayonnaise.

Before Life During Wartime concludes, youll have a time-limited response in front of Panam, Mitch, and Saul the dickhead. Youll get the choice to say It really wasnt Panams fault in defense of her. Pick that one.

Your next opportunity to deepen your relationship with Panam will pop up during the Riders on the Storm quest. Pick Yeah, of course when youre prompted to ride with Panam. Go with the flow until you find yourself fleeing a sandstorm, where youll be stuck in an abandoned house with Panamand the dickhead Saul.

Youll once again have to stand up for Panam in front of dickhead Saul on a timed response. Choose Shitty idea, Panams right. Youll then get some alone time with her. Cozying up on the couch with, choose Youd be more comfortable with your shoes off, maam and either [Touch Panams thigh] Got a few ideas or You choose. Customers always right.

Dont get discouraged when Panam rejects your advances here. You didnt screw anything up. You can get a quick kiss if you choose About last night as she gets on her bike in the morning. Have a little patience and wait for the With a little help from my friends quest. Follow the beats of that quest until youre chatting with her at the top of the control tower. Look out for the dialogue option So far, so good (this game has a thing for romance in tall buildings). Youll then want to choose [Touch Panams hand] Next time, try following that impulse.

Youll get a little campfire scene a little bit later where youll want to choose [Scooch closer] Gotten kinda cold. Moving on to the Queen of the Highway quest, youll get the dialogue option with the kissy lips, [Let Panam touch you] Oh, yeah. Lets go while in the Militech Basilisk vehicle and youll have a little moment there. After all of the sex and explosions, youll kiss her again later in the quest with [Kiss Panam] Thanks for being here for me option. And there it is, the two of you are an item! Youll get to share another moment together during the We Gotta Live Together quest.

its your life. Date who you want, I guess.Screenshot: CD Projekt Red / Kotaku

Quest flow: I Fought the Law, The Hunt, Following the River

Alright, well if you want to romance a cop, thats on you. I think I get it? Rivers a great cook, his family seems alright, and maybe seems like a good guy? I dunno. If youre V has a feminine body type and any voice, I guess you can hook up with this dude and much of the game has you helping the cops anyway, so maybe it just makes sense. Do what you want. I dont want to hear about it though.

At the very least, the sidequests associated with River are pretty entertaining.

Your chance of hooking up with a cop will start with getting a call from Elizabeth Peralez. This will grant you the I Fought the Law quest. Note: Youll need to complete Act 2, Ghost Town, Lightning Breaks, Life During Wartime, Automatic Love, and the Space Between to get this quest. Even then, youll probably need to pass some more time either with the Wait option or just from running other errands.

Did that? Good for you, cop lover. Go through with I Fought the Law onto The Hunt a day later. This quest is where youll start showing some interest. When sitting in the car with him, choose Wouldnt let it go if I were you and Sign me up for that beer. Stay in touch with him via texts and back him with Hasnt let me down yet in the timed response when confronted by Dr. Packard at the lab.

Youll find out that the cops nephew has gone missing. Follow along with the beats of the quest, unraveling mysteries by sifting through emails and jumping through a creepy braindance after a touchy family dinner. Eventually, youll piece together that Randy, the nephew, is being held on Edgewood Farm.

After River speculates the location and drives the two of you out to the farm, you must guess Edgewood Farm, otherwise your future as a cops output will be crushed. After raiding the farm, choose either Dont do it, River or Ill help you as River contemplates seeking revenge for what was done to his nephew. Hes just a good cop thats been pushed too far.

A full in-game day later and youll get a call from River that unlocks the Following the River quest. This is a mostly chill date quest. Participate in the cooking, chat with River, and then play an indoctrinating AR game with River and the kids. Let the kids win here.

During the dinner that follows, youll get a timed response to choose [Raise hand] I do! when asked Who thinks V and Uncle River would make a good couple? River will take you up to a water tower (again, with the heights), and youll want to pick the following dialogue options: Your pistol? / That a pickup-line? Your decision doesnt matter here, choose any of the three. / I can see what youre doin / Just dont fall in love... and finally [Kiss].

The morning after that bullshit, Johnny will digitally appear to shame you properly for what you just did.

If you want to leave your fling with a cop as a one time thing, you can leave it at that the following morning. River will start talking about whether this is a serious thing. If you want a relationship, pick Heavy convo for the morning / [Kiss] I feel good around you. And then there ya go, you have a cop for a boyfriend.

Screenshot: CD Projekt Red / Kotaku

While Kerry, Panam, River, and Judy are the primary love interests of V, there are a few other characters youll hook up with. Some are scripted encounters, but others require a bit more pursuit.

Meredith Stout, the angry Militech corpo you encounter early in Act One, is one such option. For this one, be sure to meet with her before seeing Maelstrom during the Pickup quest, and try not to insult her. If you take the chip, dont let Maelstrom know you met with Militech when securing the flathead. Meredith will reach out to you during Act Two. Pick either text option to reply to her. Shell send you the location of a hotel room and, well, you can guess what happens next. Shell leave afterwards. At least you get a, um, interesting weapon out of it.

You can also sort of romance Rogue Amendiares. I say sort of because, well, youre not really you during this quest. Youll let Johnny Silverhand temporarily take over. During the Blistering Love quest, youll go on a date with Rogue. As you enjoy a nice romantic evening at an abandoned drive-thru, Rogue will speak of the past. Be sure to select I like the Rogue of 2077 / Do anything not to lose you / Only thing that matters is I came back to you / (Kissy lips) [Kiss] more than I expected and youll have an intimate moment with her as someone youre not. Thats totally not relatable at all.

Everything above will let you complete the romance path with the character of your choice. But if you really want the horizon to be brighter, there are a few things to consider. During the Nocturne OP55N1 quest, youll get the chance to call either Kerry, Panam, River, or Judy (depending on who you romanced) with a final goodbye. Whoever you choose here will be your final love interest.

If you choose The Star ending, where youll get the choice to leave Night City behind and ride out with the Aldecados, either Judy or Panam will accompany you. River and Kerry, however, will say goodbye, but wont join your exodus. In choosing to team up with Takemura for The Devil ending, (you must save him in Search and Destroy for this ending), voicemails from your partner will indicate that they hope to see you again, but its otherwise uncertain. In Temperance, where you let Johnny Silverhand take over your body entirely, youll get some irritated voicemails from your love interest.

The Sun ending, where Johnny finally leaves you, youll awake in a penthouse with your romanced NPC. This will result in a poor ending if you romanced Judy or Panam. River and Kerry, however, will stick with you.

If you choose to end your own life, youll get a heartbroken voicemail from your romanced character. So dont do that.

Space exploration: reimagining the workplace – Financial Times

Posted: at 1:31 pm

With hindsight, it is easy to scoff at employers who were making firm plans for RTO return to the office in mid-2020, when the pandemic was really only just getting started.

But offices loom large in the executive psyche. They can also be a skyscraping financial commitment, second only to pay. Combine that with the century-old presumption that work is best done in buildings tailor-made for working, and it should come as no surprise that many chief executives and chief financial officers wanted to refill these costly containers as soon as possible.

A few, of course, notably in the technology sector, went in the opposite direction, dictating that staff need never return and could remote-work for ever. Wise commentators pointed out to me at the time that companies veering to one or other extreme would be caught out, and so it has proved.

Wall Street banks, in the vanguard of those calling for a return to a five-day-a-week office presence, had to row back and allow more flexibility as coronavirus mutated and persisted. Technology companies, on the other hand, are now finding it hard to soften even temporary commitments to more remote work. Apples effort to bring staff back to the workplace in September for at least three days a week met with disquiet and dissent.

Involuntary remote work during the pandemic forced many people to rearrange their homes for work purposes and those arrangements endure. But part of the problem is that most offices do not yet allow for the same flexibility.

There are exceptions. Lego laid plans for its new campus at its Denmark HQ before Covid, but it looks ideally suited to a new world where the borders of office work are blurred. It is supposed to provide a space for all colleagues to network and play during and after working hours (my italics). It features a fitness studio, communal kitchens, a cinema and accommodation for visiting employees.

Campus is an apt description for the complex, which opened in April. Business school students will recognise the mix of work, recreation, cultural and culinary stimulation from universities everywhere.

These are not new ideas. Analysing office design schemes in 2006, Jeremy Myerson and Philip Ross, veteran observers of the future of work, identified the emergence of four realms for white-collar work: the academy, a corporate realm; the agora, for public engagement, say with customers; the guild, where colleagues connect; and the lodge, where work overlaps with home.

In Unworking, a timely new book about how to reinvent the office, they enlarge on some of the ways in which these realms have become increasingly porous, accelerated by the pandemic. If only planning restrictions were looser, offices could mingle with the cities where they are located. A corporate auditorium by day could become a cinema for residents by night; a staff canteen could transform into a dark kitchen for Deliveroo users.

Breakthrough ideas, often the result of genuinely creative thinking, can become short-lived fads or ossify into the reverse of what was intended

Reinventing the office requires brave organisational thinking and leadership. In 1988, Jan Carlzon, then head of airline SAS, had to send a memo instructing employees to use the solar-heated main street that the group had created at the heart of its new headquarters to encourage collaboration. But, even if staff are won over by the new office, bold design touches and radical furnishings may look like an unwieldy overhead to the finance department, and a health and safety problem to facilities.

Breakthrough ideas, often the result of genuinely creative thinking, can become short-lived fads or ossify into the reverse of what was intended. Action Office, a supposedly flexible furniture system designed for Herman Miller in the 1960s, was the forerunner of hated, rigid cubicle farms. Once-revolutionary open-plan designs can lead to less meaningful communication between colleagues.

Myerson identifies three critical ingredients in the workplace: people, place and technology. The last may offer most potential for positive change. As anyone who has moved to a new office knows, no matter how cool the blueprint, it is when people arrive that lively collaboration spaces and unexpected dead zones become obvious.

But redesigning workplaces need not be costly or permanent. For instance, in a 2012 project for the Royal College of Art, Imogen Privett showed how flexible stage techniques such as lighting or screens could transform space and inexpensively create the wow factor that helps stimulate creative work. By collecting anonymised data about demand, personal preferences and usage, Unworking suggests that organisations ought to be able to move from the stern, unbending system of the past those beige cubicle farms to these more elastic models, shaped by and for staff, whether working in person or remotely.

One final imperative: obsession with workplace design cannot be allowed to obscure the need to reinvent the old habits of work and management. Myerson and Ross say they are optimistic about the future of the office but only if organisations can also reimagine the activities that it used to contain.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a revelation with Nvidia’s new DLSS 3.0 technology – VG247

Posted: at 1:31 pm

Its felt like DLSS has been in the process of becoming an irreplaceable tentpole feature of graphical video game presentation for a while now. As more games adopt the feature and its similar equivalents from other companies, it becomes ever harder to justify turning it off and with some tasty demos for its latest iteration, Nvidia appears to be truly upping the ante.

DLSS stands for Deep Learning Super Sampling, and its a clever AI-assisted feature that essentially allows you to get higher frame rates in games without having to sacrifice their visual fidelity. A game that might only run at 30 frames per second in regular settings could previously often be cranked up to over 60fps with DLSS enabled and with DLSS 3.0, Nvidia aims to crank the gains up even further.

The way DLSS works is pretty simple. AI models are trained on the visuals of games, meaning that the AI can effectively upscale a game with such accuracy in its fidelity that its near-enough indistinguishable from the game natively running at a much higher resolution. Running at a lower initial resolution is helpful for settings, however, allowing you to crank up all those delicious PC gaming graphics toggles to max including ray tracing, the transformative lighting feature that also has a habit of tanking frame rates.

At that point, a game like Cyberpunk 2077 will run with all those bells and whistles enabled, but at a reduced resolution. DLSS then takes over, upscaling the image the game puts out to a crisp, clean 4K image that is near indistinguishable to a native 4K image thatd be running at a much lower frame rate. Its genius.

DLSS has been around for a while, as has FidelityFX, AMDs rival solution but this latest update to the technology is significant enough that Nvidias calling it a full number increment improvement and it lives up to that designation in testing.

First, some raw numbers. If you dial Cyberpunk 2077 up to maximum on everything, using the new top-of-the-range and mega expensive RTX 4090, the game will manage 60 frames per second with ray-tracing turned on. Thats a pretty good result, however that is on a graphics card that costs well over $1000 dollars.

Still, lets stick with the 4090 for a second. What happens if you turn DLSS 3 on? Well, Cyberpunk sees its average frame rate skyrocket to well over 120fps, often pushing closer to 200fps than not. These sky-high frame rates have limited utility without the high-end displays to match, but whatever the screen, DLSS 3s frame rate boosts lead to games looking far smoother on practically any display. With the 4090s raw power, this might seem like overkill but on the other incoming cards, like the two announced forms of the 4080, thisll help get a 4K Cyberpunk play with everything maxed out well beyond a stable 60fps.

In Cyberpunk, activating DLSS 3 also activates Nvidia reflex, which means the smooth frame rate combines with lag-reduction technology to make the shooting feel hugely snappy and responsive. Part of this, it has to be said, appears to be a deliberate offset DLSS 3 appears more likely to introduce additional lag than its predecessor, but by pairing it with Reflex, a lag reducer, the end result is an overall improvement on native play.

Its a similar story in Flight Simulator, and this despite that being a game that is typically a little bit more CPU-bound than Cyberpunk. The boons to frame rate from DLSS are huge - and generally speaking, DLSS 3 appears to offer results almost twice as good as its direct predecessor, the DLSS 2 setup available on 20 and 30-series Nvidia GeForce GPUs.

The superiority of this new third version of the technology comes from the fact that it can now essentially generate all-new frames on its own. DLSS 1 & 2 could only upscale existing frames - but now the technology is sufficiently advanced that it can generate new, extra frames in between existing frames. This basically means that even if the game is only outputting, say, 90fps, the Nvidia card can extrapolate the visual data and create extra frames, slotting them into the sequence to create an even smoother look. Its a wildly ambitious use of AI technology, and its honestly pretty incredible.

The technology behind all this is deep. Its probably better off for somebody with a bigger brain than I explain; our buddies at Digital Foundry have a video on the topic, of course. Its about the neural net, and motion vectors, and something called an optical flow accelerator. I understand it, but only after perusing pages and pages of technical documentation from Nvidia and Ive no idea how to summarize it other than to just play games on it. Doing that gives one the words.

Playing Cyberpunk like this is broadly transformative. I liked the game very well enough back on launch, as even then I was playing on a high-end PC where the bugs were the least intrusive. But here, this game feels like the future and not just in terms of its setting. The ray-traced lighting demonstrates how this lighting tech isnt just a trend thats presently in vogue its clearly the future of realistic-looking worlds and ongoing graphical improvements. Just a few years ago, ray tracing came at the cost of performance but now DLSS allows you to have it on and achieve even higher frame rates than if you had both off. Its astonishing.

The catch, of course, is that this feature isnt readily available everywhere. Developers must engage with DLSS and manually add it to their games, either during development or via patch. But the tools to do so are now integrated into Unreal Engine and Unity, two of the industrys most common, so it seems a given that this will soon become a fairly standard PC release feature, alongside AMDs equivalent. Even the fruitless Switch Pro rumors have constantly suggested that its graphics board - which of course is provided by Nvidia would support DLSS. Its here to stay, and with bloody good reason.

Nvidia would of course like to sell DLSS 3 as a new must-have tool, especially since its compatible only with the new 40-series graphics cards. In a sense it is a killer app to get you to pull out your wallet and drop relatively big bucks on their new tools. Equally, however, its an iteration rather than a revolution a large step up from what DLSS 2 could offer on last-generation cards, but an anticipated improvement nevertheless.

But all of that is, yknow, sensible. Theres nothing sensible about playing a game like Cyberpunk maxed out at frame likes like that. It feels like youve time traveled, Cyberpunk running with a breeze and speed usually reserved for decade-old games since massively technically outclassed. It feels like it shouldnt even be legal. Its driven me head-first into an all-new Cyberpunk playthrough, something which I hadnt planned until the DLC was ready.

Increasingly with Nvidias releases, each new generation of hardware is not just about the physical cards and the hardware uplift they provide its about the suite of software and tools that hardware unlocks for use. More graphics is great and all, more horsepower never goes amiss, but its in features like Nvidia Broadcast, Reflex, and even diagnostic tools like Frameview, that the graphics giant makes its case for remaining market leader. DLSS 3 is another tremendous string to that bow and Ill now be using it wherever it is available.

Op-ed | Lessons in Creativity from Space Astronauts – SpaceNews

Posted: at 1:31 pm

Earth from space sparkles. Photos do not capture this. You have to see it to believe it.

Astronauts have long attempted to capture in words, photos, paintings, and poetry the view of Earth from space. I tried, too, after returning from my flight as a commercial astronaut aboard Blue Origins NS-19 flight in 2021. But space resists capture. Instead, it reframes the perspective of Earth, work, and oneself.

Author Frank White termed the Overview Effect, a phenomenon that astronauts experience upon seeing Earth, in a completely different context. Space changes astronauts. It has the power to change all of us, and not just up there.

The team at Space for Humanity is developing the next generation of citizen astronauts, determined to share the Overview Effect with everyone. But those who cant go to space should consider channeling the Overview Effect here on Earth.

As leaders ostensibly serve humanitys greater good, we can look to astronauts and the space program for better ways to serve. They can teach us how to work more creatively, collaboratively, and harmoniously. Astronauts have been doing so for decades and will continue to do so on their way to Mars in the future.

The creative minds behind space exploration have given us boundless products: camera phones, athletic shoes, wireless headsets, and even the Jaws of Life. Space travel made possible solutions such as the worlds first water-recycling shower, bioregenerative food systems that could improve our Earth-bound food supply, and methods for preventing osteoporosis. One of the case studies of human creativity is Apollo 13, the 1970 lunar mission in which three astronauts returned their failing craft to Earth with a resourceful array of parts, determination, and the space programs greatest resource: ingenuity.

Well require deeper reserves of ingenuity to send humans to Mars, a multi-year journey of body and spirit. Researchers and prospective astronauts are developing the technology necessary for safe travel to Mars. Theyre also devising methods to live and work in small groups, so that we can act autonomously on a distant planet.

This fascinating research is uncovering creative work strategies that leaders could use in their companies, particularly with remote teams. In determining who has The Right Stuff for Mars, researchers are also teaching us to rethink work at home.

Noshir Contractor and Leslie DeChurch, professors at Northwestern University, study astronaut training and performance to determine the best dynamics for small-group space exploration. In a presentation called Teaming in a Virtual World, the professors offered five creative lessons about work they learned from astronauts. They include:

Researchers found that the bold-personality type of the The Right Stuff era of astronauts is over. Deep space astronauts must play well with others, even if that means reconfiguring with whom they collaborate.

Contractor and DeChurch studied astronauts for insights into repairing frayed working relationships for long-term project viability. The professorssuggest that leaders who find fractures should attempt to minimize the time those team members work together. If you cant be with the team you love, Contractor says, love the team youre with.

Mars missions will be limited to four to six team members, making effective small-group living essential. In their research, DeChurch and Contractor repeatedly heard International Space Station astronauts underscore the requirements of tight quarters: tolerance, constructive conflict, support, and shared rituals.

Employ these tactics within your teams. Encourage team members to check in with one another, help with tasks, or have lunch (even virtually) together. One more suggestion from ISS astronauts: Absorb negativity by sharing the bad days. In other words, as one astronaut said, eat the [expletive] sandwich together.

Research showed that astronaut performance declined during a missions third quarter when the initial energy wore off, but the finish line remained distant. Moods changed, and problem-solving skills diminished before recharging for the fourth quarter.

COVID has complicated this for many teams since it still has no end date, but DeChurch offered a suggestion: Establish a projects mental clock and recognize it explicitly. When team members work on the same clock, they support the project and each other more meaningfully even if the clock changes.

Astronauts live and work in structure. After spending a year on the ISS, astronaut Scott Kelly said he found unstructured life on Earth difficult. Of course, astronauts respond to structure because of their training and responsibilities, and leaders cant exactly replicate that environment within their teams.

The researchers suggest a manufacturing structure. Schedule time for independent work separate from group assignments. Then schedule time away from work. But dont overschedule. For example, messages from Mars might take 40 minutes to reach Earth, requiring astronauts to work autonomously. Make sure your team is invested in working independently as well.

Is NASA looking for astronauts who are clowns? Though not a defining characteristic, humor helps. Tom Williams, formerly of NASAs Human Research Program, made that point during the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences 2019 discussion, Building a Winning Team for Missions to Mars.

I dont know that the research really leads us to a conclusion that we must select someone in a crew of four [with a sense of humor], Williams said, but clearly the research demonstrates that humor used at the right time can discharge a lot of tension that may have built because of interactions.

If astronauts can deploy humor to cope with stressful situations 140 million miles from home, certainly we can defuse a Zoom call with a good joke.

I believe space transforms us. It transports us from our common surroundings, giving us a new lens to see the world. Space also empowers us to be creative, learn, and solve. What astronauts do in space benefits us on Earth. We just need to reframe things from a unique perspective like the astronauts.

Dylan Taylor is the chairman and chief executive of Voyager Space. He went to space in December 2021 aboard Blue Origins New Shepard suborbital spacecraft.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a Strand game with this courier mod – Gamesradar

Posted: at 1:31 pm

A new Cyberpunk 2077 mod adds a decidedly Death Stranding-like mail-delivering minigame that makes Night City the main character.

The 'Make a Living' mod allows you to deliver packages from one drop point to the next in exchange for eurodollars. Once you download the mod, you'll see a new window next to the mini map when you're at a drop point that lists any available jobs you can accept, how far you'll need to travel to complete them, and how well they pay. The mod-maker hopes this will incentivize players to explore Night City more.

"Night City is huge and 'breathtaking' yetwhile you're in there without doing gigs or questlines you can feel out of place," reads the description on NexusMods (opens in new tab). "My goal is to add more activities to it and let you enjoy the city more, making you feel more like a true citizen."

Having played Cyberpunk 2077 for a few hours and lost interest in the main campaign pretty quickly, this mod could be the thing that gets me to re-download the game. I remember feeling enchanted by the look and feel of Night City but also wanting for more exploration-focused tasks, especially in the early game. Of course, the chance to score some eddies on the side makes this mod even more enticing.

Almost two years since launch, Cyberpunk 2077 has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent weeks, perhaps thanks to substantial number of updates and fixes, a confirmed sequel on the way, and a healthy modding scene. It's unclear if the world has fully welcomed the game back into its good graces, but one senior developer recently said "it's fucking good to be back" in an emotional reaction to the game's recent uptick in the community.

Here are some handy Cyberpunk 2077 tips if you're just setting foot in Night City for the first time.
