Misinformation research relies on AI and lots of scrolling – NPR

What sorts of lies and falsehoods are circulating on the internet? Taylor Agajanian used her summer job to help answer this question, one post at a time. It often gets squishy.

She reviewed a social media post where someone had shared a news story about vaccines with the comment "Hmmm, that's interesting." Was the person actually saying that the news story was interesting, or insinuating that the story isn't true?

Agajanian read around and between the lines often while working at University of Washington's Center for an Informed Public, where she reviewed social media posts and recorded misleading claims about COVID-19 vaccines.

As the midterm election approaches, researchers and private sector firms are racing to track false claims about everything from ballot harvesting to voting machine conspiracies. But the field is still in its infancy even as the threats to the democratic process posed by viral lies loom. Getting a sense of which falsehoods people online talk about might sound like a straightforward exercise, but it isn't.

"The broader question is, can anyone ever know what everybody is saying?" says Welton Chang, CEO of Pyrra, a startup that tracks smaller social media platforms. (NPR has used Pyrra's data in several stories.)

Automating some of the steps the University of Washington team uses humans for, Pyrra uses artificial intelligence to extract names, places and topics from social media posts. Using the same technologies that in recent years enable AI to write remarkably like humans, the platform generates summaries of trending topics. An analyst reviews the summaries, weeds out irrelevant items like advertising campaigns, gives them a light edit and shares them with clients.

A recent digest of such summaries include the unsubstantiated claim "Energy infrastructure under globalist attack."

The University of Washington and Pyrra's approaches are on the more extreme ends in terms of automation - few teams have so many staff - around 15 - just to monitor social media, or rely so heavily on algorithms as to have it synthesize material and output.

All methods carry caveats. Manually monitoring and coding content could miss out on developments; and while capable of processing huge amounts of data, artificial intelligence struggles to handle the nuances of distinguishing satire from sarcasm.

Although incomplete, having a sense of what's circulating in the online discourse allows society to respond. Research into voting-related misinformation in 2020 has helped inform election officials and voting rights groups about what messages to emphasize this year.

For responses to be proportionate, society also needs to evaluate the impact of false narratives. Journalists have covered misinformation spreaders who seem to have very high total engagement numbers but limited impact, which risks "spreading further hysteria over the state of online operations," wrote Ben Nimmo, who now investigates global threats at Meta, Facebook's parent company.

While language can be ambiguous, it's more straight forward to track who's been following and retweeting whom. Other researchers analyze networks of actors as well as narratives.

The plethora of approaches is typical of a field that's just forming, says Jevin West, who studies the origins of academic disciplines at University of Washington's Information School. Researchers come from different fields and bring methods they're comfortable with to start, he says.

West corralled research papers from academic database Semantic Scholar mentioning 'misinformation' or 'disinformation' in their title or abstract, and found that many papers are from medicine, computer science, psychology and there also geology, mathematics and art.

"If we're a qualitative researcher, we'll go...and literally code everything that we see." West says. More quantitative researchers do large scale analysis like mapping topics on Twitter.

Projects often use a mix of methods. "If [different methods] start converging on similar kinds of...conclusions, then I think we'll feel a little bit better about it." West says.

One of the very first steps of misinformation research - before someone like Agajanian starts tagging posts - is identifying relevant content under a topic. Many researchers start their search with expressions they think people talking about the topic could use, see what other phrases and hashtags appear in the search results, add that to the query, and repeat the process.

It's possible to miss out on keywords and hashtags, not to mention that they change over time.

"You have to use some sort of keyword analysis. " West says, "Of course, that's very rudimentary, but you have to start somewhere."

Some teams build algorithmic tools to help. A team at Michigan State University manually sorted over 10,000 tweets to pro-vaccine, anti-vaccine, neutral and irrelevant as training data. The team then used the training data to build a tool that sorted over 120 million tweets into these buckets.

For the automatic sorting to remain relatively accurate as the social conversation evolves, humans have to keep annotating new tweets and feed them the training set, Pang-Ning Tan, a co-author of the project, told NPR in an email.

If the interplay between machine detection - human review rings familiar, that might be because you've heard of large social platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Tik Tok describing similar processes to moderate content.

Unlike the platforms, another fundamental challenge researchers have to face is data access. Much misinformation research uses Twitter data, in part because Twitter is one of the few social media platforms that easily lets users tap into its data pipeline - known as Application Programming Interface or API. This allows researchers to easily download and analyze large numbers of tweets and user profiles.

The data pipelines of smaller platforms tend to be less well-documented and could change on short notice.

Take the recently-deplatformed Kiwi Farms as an example. The site served as a forum for anti-LGBTQ activists to harass gay and trans people. "When it first went down, we had to wait for it to basically pop back up somewhere, and then for people to talk about where that somewhere is." says Chang.

"And then we can identify, okay, the site is now here - it has this similar structure, the API is the same, it's just been replicated somewhere else. And so we're redirecting the data ingestion and pulling content from there."

Facebook's data service CrowdTangle, while purporting to serve up all publicly available posts, has been found to not have consistently done so. On another occasion, Facebook bungled data sharing with researchers Most recently, Meta is winding down CrowdTangle, with no alternatives announced set to be in place.

Other large platforms, like YouTube and TikTok, do not have an accessible API , a data service or collaboration with researchers at all. Tik Tok has promised more transparency for researchers.

In such a vast, fragmented, and shifting landscape, West says there's no great way at this point to say what's the state of misinformation on a given topic.

"If you were to ask Mark Zuckerberg, what are people saying on Facebook today? I don't think he could tell you." says Chang.

Magic Johnson Turned $15,000 Profits on Trips to Las Vegas Without Placing a Single Bet, Thanks to Jerry Buss – Sportscasting

Posted: at 1:33 pm

During his time on the NBA hardwood, Magic Johnson scored plenty of wins. His success, however, wasnt limited to basketball, though. Beyond his fame and fortune, the guard also scored during trips to Las Vegas with Lakers owner Jerry Buss. Things in Sin City, however, probably didnt go the way youre imagining.

Magic wasnt making a killing on the slots or hitting blackjack after blackjack. Instead, he was pocketing the chips his boss would give him and cashing them out at the end of the trip.

Think that sounds like something out of a sitcom? Let Johnson tell you exactly what happened.

When you hear of someone leaving Las Vegas with thousands of dollars in their pocket, you probably think they hit the jackpot while gambling. Magic Johnson, however, played things a bit differently.

As the former point guard explained to Jimmy Kimmel, he and Dr. Buss would take a commercial flight to Sin City. In the casino, the latter man would play baccarat with Magic sitting behind him.

So, he would be feeding me chips, Johnson explained. Hed say, Heres $5,000 worth of chips. Go gamble. And Id put them in my pocket. And so, the next day, hed say, Heres five more thousand, go gamble. I put them in my pocket. So wed be there three days, Id have me $15,000.

That wasnt the end of the story, though. Years later, Magic realized that his boss had known exactly what was going on the entire time.

So, I thought all those years, I had tricked him, the Lakers legend continued. True story. Jeanie Buss calls me and says, My dad is dying. And youve got to come see him. He wants to see you. So I go see him. And first thing he says, Jimmy. He says, Magic, I knew you were going to make it well in business. All them times I gave you those chips, I knew you were cashing them in.'

While those $15,000 trips to Las Vegas may loom large in Johnsons mind, they werent the only money he got from Dr. Jerry Buss. During the guards time in Hollywood, he was taking home a sizable paycheck.

As recorded by Spotrac, the guard earned $2.3 million across his five-year rookie contract. Before that deal expired, though, it was time for a major raise. Magic and the Lakers signed an unbelievable extension, paying the point guard $25 million for 25 years of service.

While that sort of contract might sound laughable by todays standards, it made plenty of headlines at the time. In a New York Times report, Buss had to explain that the deal took inflation, Johnsons future earning power, and other factors into consideration. He also noted that the deal, which made Magic the third player to eclipse the $1 million mark, was designed to allow the star to take a role within the organization after his playing career came to an end.

He may even be my coach, Buss said. Or general manager. Or maybe hell run the team and Ill just sit back and watch. Magic is a bright kid and I plan to make him my protege, teach him the business aspect of sports. I realize this is a very unusual contract because were talking about a kid whose college class just graduated. But what it comes down to is that Magic is part of the family.

Things didnt go exactly according to plan Johnsons HIV announcement brought his playing career to a premature end Busss words did come to fruition. Magic briefly took charge of the Lakers as the franchises head coach, branched out into business, and eventually rejoined the club as the president of basketball operations.

So, when you consider all that Magic Johnson brought to the Lakers organization, those trips to Las Vegas were just a drop in the financial bucket. If you asked Jerry Buss, each one was probably $15,000 well spent.

How to get help: In the U.S., contact the National Council on Problem Gambling helpline at 1-800-522-4700.

AI Shouldnt Compete With WorkersIt Should Supercharge Them – WIRED

Posted: at 1:33 pm

Instead of merely saving costs by replacing humans with a bot, Brynjolfsson notes, augmentation increases peoples productivity. Better yet, some of the economic value of that productivity would accrue to workers because their augmented labor would become more valuable. It wouldnt all be hoovered up by the billionaire owners of the tech.

The catch is that augmentation is hard. When youre simply mimicking human behavior, you know (more or less) whether youve nailed it. (The computer can play checkers: success!) But inventing a form of AI thats usefully different from the way humans operate requires more imagination. You have to think about how to create silicon superpowers that fit hand-in-glove with the abilities unique to peoplesuch as our fuzzy, aha intuition; our common-sense reasoning; and our ability to deal creatively with rare, edge cases.

Its 100 times easier to look at something existing and think, OK, can we substitute a machine or a human there? The really hard thing is, lets imagine something that never existed before, Brynjolfsson says. But ultimately that second way is where most of the value comes from.

At the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI, director Fei-Fei Li wanted to know what people actually wish to have automated. Her group went to the US governments American Time Use Survey, which chronicles peoples daily tasks. Lis team picked 2,000 everyday activities that could viably be done by AI and robots, then asked people to rate how much they wanted that task automated, with zero being hell no, I dont want robots to do this, and the maximum being please, Im dying to have a robot do this, Li says.

Open a Christmas present for me was zero; cleaning the toilet was high. Obvious enough, but there was more complex stuff in the middle, such as recommending a book. The only way to find out what people want, Li notes, is by asking themnot by barging ahead and designing AI based on sci-fi fantasies.

Heres another wrinkle: Its not always obvious how the two kinds of AI are different.

One could argue that DALL-E and other image generators are a pure Turing play because they replicate the human ability to create art. The internet currently groans under the weight of essays claiming human artists are about to be serially unemployed by AI. But creators can also use the apps to punch above their weight, such as when a video game designer used Midjourney to generate art for a space shooter. That looks a lot like augmentation.

Whats more, many jobs are harder to entirely automate than you might think. In 2016, deep-learning pioneer Geoff Hinton argued that we should stop training radiologists because its just completely obvious that within five years, deep learning is going to do better than radiologists. (He added that it might take 10 years.) But there are still tons of radiologists employed, and there probably will be in the future because the job of a radiologist is more complicated than Hinton suggests, as noted by Andrew McAfee, a colleague and coauthor of Brynjolfssons who codirects the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy. AI might be better at noticing potential tumors on scans, but thats only one small part of a radiologists job. The rest of it includes preparing treatment plans and interacting with scared patients. Tumor-spotting AIs, then, might be better seen as augmenting those doctors.

To nudge companies away from Turingism, Brynjolfsson suggests some changes to government policy. One area ripe for reform is the US tax code. Right now, it taxes labor more harshly than capital, as recent work by the Brookings Institute found. Companies get better tax treatment when they buy robots or software to replace humans because of write-offs such as capital depreciation. So the tax code essentially encourages firms to automate workers off the payroll, rather than keeping them and augmenting them.

We subsidize capital and we tax labor, Brynjolfsson says. So right now were pushing entrepreneurswhether they want to or notto try to figure out ways to replace human labor. If we flip that around, or even just level the playing field, then entrepreneurs would figure out a better way. That might be one way out of the trap.

Posted: at 1:33 pm

Today we are taking a deep dive into Bovada one of the leading online casinos. Being established over a decade ago, Bovada has managed to build quite a reputation among gamblers.

In addition to having a top-notch casino with stellar customer service, this site also includes a fantastic sportsbook and poker room. Its the perfect place to go for all your gambling needs making sure to meet everyones interests.

But, what exactly makes Bovada different from other online casinos and why should I choose it? Thats exactly what we are going to discover in this Bovada casino review.

So, without further ado, lets begin.

Bonuses Available at Bovada:

Well start by previewing Bovadas best features, which well discuss in more detail later in the article:

Read another take on Bovada Casino here

When reviewing Bovada, our top concern was to ensure that it is a safe online casino. Many sites boast about their high online casino with real money payouts, but not all of them are legit. However, our Bovada Casino review found this gambling site to be 100% trustworthy.

Bovada is licensed in Curacao, which is one of the best-known regulatory jurisdictions in the online gambling industry. The license from Curacao means that this online casino is definitely safe to use and adheres to high standards of safety and security.

It is not only the license that guarantees your safety it is also many security measures adopted by Bovada. Among them is SSL encryption, which guarantees high security of the website. Due to the efforts that Bovadas team has put into this online casino and all the measures they employ to guarantee your safety, as well as the license, its easy to conclude that Bovada is a legit online casino.

While everything we have mentioned above is true and very positive, we would like to still encourage our readers to check out the regulatory laws in their countries and jurisdictions.

If youre ready to register at this top online casino, follow the steps weve listed below:

Visit the website of this online casino and find the red button that says Join. Click on it to get started with the registration process.

Next, youll need to provide some details to set up your Bovada account. Type your name, date of birth, phone number, email address, and zip code in the respective fields.

Youll need to create a password for your casino account. We suggest using uppercase, lowercase, special characters, and numbers for maximum safety. However, be sure its something you can remember, as youll need it for your Bovada Casino login.

You should always read the casinos terms and conditions thoroughly before committing to creating an account. Once you are done, youll need to click on the checkbox agreeing to terms and conditions and continue the registration process.

This box also confirms that youre old enough to gamble online. Its vital to follow your local laws to prevent any legal issues.

Once youve finished the steps mentioned above, click on the red registration button. Then, enter the code that Bovada texts you. Finally, create a four-digit security pin to help protect your account.

Now, a pop-up about bonuses will open on your screen. Select one from the list, or enter a Bovada Casino bonus code you want to activate.

Bovada is one of the best online casinos weve come across. Heres why we love it, and why you will too:

Game Variety: 4.8/5

Bovada has a good variety of online casino games. We found about 200 titles from leading providers on this site, so we know youre in for plenty of fun if you sign up. You can enjoy various slots, table games such as online poker rooms, blackjack, and live casino online games at Bovada.

One could say that the number of games available at Bovada is not enough, however, we cant agree with this statement. When it comes to games, Bovada decided to focus on the quality of games instead of the quantity and decided to handpick the best games from leading providers which ensures the highest quality.

One downside of the casino is that it doesnt have some categories like keno or scratch cards. However, overall, Bovada steps up to the plate regarding game variety.

Online Casino Features: 4.9/5

We saw several exciting features at this casino. For starters, it works smoothly on any device. You wont be frustrated by slow loading times, bugs, or glitches. Unfortunately, there isnt a Bovada Casino app, but the site is optimized for mobile devices so that you can access the casino on the go without any issues.

All of the desktop casino games are available on mobile, which is a very important thing.

Bovada even offers free online casino games. This feature is perfect for testing out the games and finding your favorites before risking your hard-earned money. You cant win real money at this online casino for free, though.

Game Design: 4.9/5

This sites games come from top-notch providers, such as Spinomenal and Real Time Gaming. Plus, Bovada is updating its game selection very frequently. Each title has a unique design that creates an immersive experience with its soundtrack and graphics.

Best of all, we found that the games were speedy and responsive. This way, players dont need to suffer through long loading times or slowly spinning reels.

Tournament Selection: 4.9/5

Bovada offers a long list of tournaments regularly. Players can easily join them by visiting the happening now tab of the leaderboards section.

These tournaments include blackjack, baccarat, and more so that every player has a chance of finding one that interests them. It even includes slot races on exciting titles including Cyberpunk City and Caesars Victory.

Game Restrictions: 4.9/5

The minimum and maximum bets will vary by casino game, as these are typically set by the game provider rather than the casino. We found reasonable restrictions that should cater to every type of player.

For example, high rollers will enjoy titles such as Blackjack, which has a higher maximum bet. This way, they can enjoy the thrill of high-stakes play. Players can also stay in their comfort zone, wagering the low minimum a dollar.

Overall, we give Bovada a score of 4.88 out of five. We had fun exploring the wide selection of casino games. We didnt run into bugs or glitches, which is always a plus. After all, no one enjoys slow-spinning reels or a frozen blackjack table.

The mobile capabilities at Bovada are fantastic, as all the games run smoothly on your mobile browser, and the design is optimized for mobile screens. We would like to see Bovada create an app, especially if its as top-notch as their website.

Bovada impressed us with its wide selection of tournaments and reasonable game restrictions. Of course, there are some downsides, like that it doesnt have keno or scratch cards.

Overall, though, the sites many positive features blew us away. We especially enjoyed the top stand-out features we mentioned earlier in this article, which well go into more detail about below.

Bovada has a well-organized site that makes finding what youre looking for straightforward. The white background looks clean and professional, and the red, blue, and black accents help make the design pop while highlighting key information.

This casino has a fantastic six-tier loyalty program. You can easily move up the ranks by earning reward points through playing casino games. Then, you can redeem your points for cash bonuses to boost your bankroll. Best of all, you wont lose your status due to inactivity like you would at many other online gaming sites.

Bovada offers exclusive rewards for Bitcoin players, such as a massive $3,750 welcome package. These deals are a great way to reward yourself with some bonus funds just for using a payment method you probably already planned to.

As we mentioned earlier, Bovada has a wide array of tournaments on various casino games. It also has several exciting poker tournaments. Our favorite is the Hyper Turbo Tournaments, where quickly increasing blinds create quite the thrill.

Another great promotion at Bovada can be activated by using the promo code BIGLEAGUES. This promotion gives players a 100% deposit match in addition to 25 free spins on 777 Deluxe.

There also are different types of promotions available at Bovada, including the special sports betting bonus and poker offer.

Bovada supports 9 payment methods, including cryptocurrencies and credit/debit cards. Youll find a wide selection that ensures you can bank comfortably regardless of your preferred option.

We experienced reasonable withdrawal times, so you should receive your funds quickly. Keep in mind that some take longer than others, though. We recommend using cryptocurrencies, which only take up to an hour.

Bovada has an excellent help center that answers nearly every question you could think of. Finding what youre looking for is a breeze with the organized subsections and search function.

The team behind this online casino has worked hard to think of any questions you may have, as it knows that you dont always have time to wait for a live agent.

NATO Allies take further steps towards responsible use of AI, data, autonomy and digital transformation – NATO HQ

Posted: at 1:33 pm

On Thursday (13 October), NATO Defence Ministers agreed to establish a Review Board to govern the responsible development and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data across the NATO Enterprise.

The Boards first task will be to develop a user-friendly Responsible AI certification standard, including quality controls and risk mitigation, that will help align new AI and data projects with NATOs Principles of Responsible Use approved in October 2021. The Board will also serve as a unique platform to exchange best practices, guide innovators and operational end-users throughout the development phase, thereby contributing to building trust within the innovation community. At present, NATO is piloting AI in areas as diverse as cyber defence, climate change and imagery analysis.

In response to the 2022 Strategic Concepts call to expedite digital transformation, NATO Allies also approved NATOs first Digital Transformation vision. By 2030, NATOs Digital Transformation will enable the Alliance to conduct multi-domain operations, ensure interoperability across all domains, enhance situational awareness, and facilitate political consultation and data-driven decision-making.

NATOs efforts in emerging and disruptive technologies, NATOs AI Strategy and NATOs data exploitation framework policy will contribute to bringing the vision to life. Additional steps were made with Defence Ministers endorsement of priority areas for applying advanced data analysis, including to enable multi-domain operations and enhance situational awareness, and the approval of NATOs first autonomy implementation plan.

AI, data exploitation and autonomy are among the nine technological areas of priority to NATO. These also include: quantum-enabled technologies, biotechnology and human enhancements, hypersonic technologies, novel material and manufacturing, energy and propulsion, and space.

How to Play Online Blackjack: Rules, Strategy, and More – The Action Network

Posted: at 1:33 pm

While most players will play blackjack based on an emotional response to the hand they are dealt, there are far more factors to consider. Blackjack is largely considered to be a solved game, meaning that all of the decisions that can be brought up during a session of blackjack have been mathematically proven to have a correct response. This set of responses is entitled Basic Strategy.

Charts like these tell you everything you need to know about optimal blackjack strategy. While hitting on 16 might cause you to bust more often than not, it is, all things equal, the best play you can make.

In its most basic form, there are five primary decisions that players can make when comparing their hand to the dealers up card. These are hit, stand, double down, split, and surrender.

There are times to hit or stand, double down or split, and surrender. Lets discuss when to do each action.

When it comes to blackjack, arguably the most important aspect of the game is acknowledging what the dealers up card is. While the cards in your hand are important, they should be played in a manner that relates to what the dealer is showing face-up.

When describing certain numbers in this section, we are not referring to pairs or soft 8s (Ace + Seven). Those will be discussed later on. For example, when we mention that you should hit an 8 at all times, this does not refer to a pair of 4s and only refers to combos like 6/2 and 5/3.

Because Aces are so versatile and can be used as both a 1 and an 11 in blackjack, there are a lot of interesting spots that players can be faced with when given a soft hand.

Receiving a pair in blackjack is one of the most prominent ways to maximize profit at the tables as long as you understand how to play them properly.

A pair of 2s is the lowest numbered starting hand a player can have that is considered to be a hard number. Players should be looking to split their deuces against 2s and 3s if doubling down is permitted after the split by the casino. They should be split against 4s, 5s, 6s, and 7s as well. They should only be hit against 8s, 9s, 10s, and Aces.

A pair of 3s should be played exactly the same way under the same circumstances as a pair of 2s.

A pair of 4s looks nice as it is a pair, but there are hardly any splitting opportunities to be had. Two 4s should always be hit unless the dealer is showing a 5 or 6 and players are allowed to double down after the split.

A pair of 5s should be doubled down on every up card except for a 10 or an Ace. They should absolutely never be split under any circumstances.

A pair of 6s should be split against a 3, 4, 5, or 6, and should only be split against a 2 if doubling down after the split is allowed. This hand should be hit against 7s, 8s, 9s, 10s, and Aces.

A pair of 7s should be split against all 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, and 7s. It is a hit otherwise.

A pair of 8s should always be split. It does not matter what the dealer is showing. Two 8s make a 16 which is an awful spot to be in and players should make every attempt to improve upon their hand even if it means pouring more money into an unfavorable situation.

A pair of 9s should be split against every dealer up card except a 7, 10, or Ace. Players should stand in those situations.

Two 10s, Jacks, Queens, and Kings should never be split as players are already in excellent position with a made hand. Never split tens.

Like a pair of 8s, players should ALWAYS split their Aces. This rule applies to every situation as players splitting their aces can put themselves in position to receive two 21s, an unbeatable hand.

In blackjack, there are many different types of betting strategies that players can deploy in an effort to maximize wins and minimize losses, thus conserving their bankroll. Lets discuss some of the most popular strategies blackjack players use.

Unit betting is one of the most popular betting strategies because nothing changes as a player goes through a session of blackjack. Players never deviate from their standard unit. For example, if a player uses a $25 bet size as their standard, they will never bet less or more than that total on a given hand, excluding splits and double downs.

One of the most aggressive betting strategies is the Martingale strategy of betting. This strategy is not only limited to blackjack, but can also be used in other forms of wagering. Martingale requires players to have a massive bankroll as swings can absolutely decimate someones entire bankroll in a few minutes if not used properly. Taking from the standard unit betting strategy, players must pick a standard unit size that they want to start each betting round with.

For example, if a player picks $20 as their standard betting unit, this will be the wager they will use after every win. If a player loses, they will then double their bet size. In doing so, players will practically guarantee that they win at least a unit every time they win a hand. Starting with $20, a player will then bet $20 again if they win that first hand and will bet $40 if they lose. If they lose back-to-backhands, it will then be an $80 wager on the third hand.

It is easy to see how this strategy can become lucrative, but it can also expand upon the already existing variance of blackjack. If a player were to lose 10 hands in a row, an outcome that is unlikely but is certainly possible, this means that a player will have lost $20, $40, $80, $160, $320, $640, $1,280, $2,560, $5,120, and $10,240 hands consecutively. If this happened under the Martingale strategy, players would lose $18,156 in this scenario. They would then need to come up with $20,480 for the eleventh hand to be able to adequately fulfill the strategy.

There are many different types of blackjack to be played at various online casinos. There are many standard blackjack games that pay 3:2 on natural 21s and have standard rule sets, but there are many other variations as well.

Free Bet blackjack has one of the lowest RTPs for blackjack variations, but it is also the most volatile, granting players massive wins on occasion with the side bet entitled Pot of Gold. In this game, blackjack plays standardly, but the only difference is a huge one. Players are able to double down and split for free in this edition of the game, but can only double 9s, 10s, and 11s and split pairs. This bet is on the house so there is no issue in taking advantage of it. However, sometimes by taking the free double, you can lose the hand when in a bad position. Still, this is only for a standard one unit level of exposure instead of the double alternative.

Infinite blackjack has become popular online as more and more players look to get in on the action. In this form, all players who are on a given platform can hop in with no maximum number of players involved. All players will receive the same hand or hands butwill be able to play them independently.

In blackjack switch, players have the opportunity to switch out their cards if they are playing two hands. For example, if a player gets a 8/7 and a 4/3, they can then switch the 8 and 4 to create two 11s, which are two double down hands. This game usually comes with a 1:1 blackjack natural payout as opposed to 3:2, keeping the house edge intact.

Many different side bets can be played across allonline blackjackgames. These include Pair bets, Rummy bets, and Flush plus bets. Players can receive up to an 11x payout by being given a pair in their hand while taking a side bet. For Rummy bets, players can receive up to a 14x payout if they receive a three of a kind with the dealer, a flush, or a straight. With Flush Plus bets, players can receive massive payouts with straight flushes, mini royal flushes, and three of a kind hits receiving progressive payouts based on hand strength.

The messy morality of letting AI make life-and-death decisions – MIT Technology Review

Posted: at 1:33 pm

By the 2000s, an algorithm had been developed in the US to identify recipients for donated kidneys. But some people were unhappy with how the algorithm had been designed. In 2007, Clive Grawe, a kidney transplant candidate from Los Angeles, told a room full of medical experts that their algorithm was biased against older people like him. The algorithm had been designed to allocate kidneys in a way that maximized years of life saved. This favored younger, wealthier, and whiter patients, Grawe and other patients argued.

Such bias in algorithms is common. Whats less common is for the designers of those algorithms to agree that there is a problem. After years of consultation with laypeople like Grawe, the designers found a less biased way to maximize the number of years savedby, among other things, considering overall health in addition to age. One key change was that the majority of donors, who are often people who have died young, would no longer be matched only to recipients in the same age bracket. Some of those kidneys could now go to older people if they were otherwise healthy. As with Scribners committee, the algorithm still wouldnt make decisions that everyone would agree with. But the process by which it was developed is harder to fault.

I didnt want to sit there and give the injection. If you want it, you press the button.

Nitschke, too, is asking hard questions.

A former doctor who burned his medical license after a years-long legal dispute with the Australian Medical Board, Nitschke has the distinction of being the first person to legally administer a voluntary lethal injection to another human. In the nine months between July 1996, when the Northern Territory of Australia brought in a law that legalized euthanasia, and March 1997, when Australias federal government overturned it, Nitschke helped four of his patients to kill themselves.

The first, a 66-year-old carpenter named Bob Dent, who had suffered from prostate cancer for five years, explained his decision in an open letter: If I were to keep a pet animal in the same condition I am in, I would be prosecuted.

Nitschke wanted to support his patients decisions. Even so, he was uncomfortable with the role they were asking him to play. So he made a machine to take his place. I didnt want to sit there and give the injection, he says. If you want it, you press the button.

The machine wasnt much to look at: it was essentially a laptop hooked up to a syringe. But it achieved its purpose. The Sarco is an iteration of that original device, which was later acquired by the Science Museum in London. Nitschke hopes an algorithm that can carry out a psychiatric assessment will be the next step.

But theres a good chance those hopes will be dashed. Creating a program that can assess someones mental health is an unsolved problemand a controversial one. As Nitschke himself notes, doctors do not agree on what it means for a person of sound mind to choose to die. You can get a dozen different answers from a dozen different psychiatrists, he says. In other words, there is no common ground on which an algorithm could even be built.
