Looking to the Outer Space to Create a New Corporate Citizen Model on Earth – Pittsburgh Magazine

54321 Liftoff.

This will be the historic countdown heard around the world as the ULA Vulcan Centaur rocket ignites and propels the Astrobotic Peregrine lander in the direction of the Moon later this year. Whether or not Astrobotics first lunar mission is successful, it will be a powerful symbol of Americas commitment not only toreturn to the Moonfor the first time since the Apollo era, but to establish a sustainable presence there for the benefit of future generations. It will be the first-ever commercial mission to the Moon, emblematic of a new era of space exploration defined by public-private partnerships. And it will be the first time a singular lunar mission will enable multiple nations including Nepal, one of the poorest nations on Earth as well as companies, organizations and even individuals to have a shot at their own Apollo moment.

A Hyperlocal Space Company with Galactic Aspirations

At the heart of this historic mission isAstrobotic, a homegrown Pittsburgh entrepreneurial success story that is changing the narrative about what it means to be a hyperlocal space company with galactic aspirations.

With its origin story beginning at Carnegie Mellon University, Astrobotic has grown into a 165-person (and rapidly expanding) space robotics company focused on building landers and rovers that transport and deliver customer payloads to and across the lunar surface, innovative automated systems that provide critical power and communications to customers for sustained on-surface operations and building block technologies that support space navigation and operations more broadly.

Making Space Accessible to the World

Of course, this could describe any number of recognized and emerging space companies within the quickly growing $450 billion global space industry. What distinguishes Astrobotic is the way it sees itself: a Pittsburgh company rooted and inseparable from the community where it is physically located. Indeed, the lasting legacy of Astrobotic may not be the Peregrine mission, or even its historically significant Griffin mission, which will deliver NASAs VIPER rover to the South Pole of the Moon to drill for water ice in 2023. Rather, it may be the fact that Astrobotic is using outer space and the Moon to create a new model for what it means to be a corporate citizen here on Earth.

John Thornton, Astrobotics CEO and his team take the company mantra, Making space accessible to the world, seriously. Recognizing that access to space starts with winning hearts and minds on Earth, Astrobotic selected Manchester, a majority minority neighborhood in Pittsburghs North Shore, to build its headquarters.

Astrobotic then launched theMoonshot Museum, a stand-alone nonprofit organization that is building a space career-oriented living lab experience at Astrobotics headquarters, offering the public a rare view into the Astrobotic cleanroom where their landers and rovers are built and integrated. The Moonshot Museum, on schedule to open in October 2022, will offer experiential space mission-based programs designed to inspire and encourage students of all ages to turn their space passion or curiosity into a tangible space career across diverse fields including engineering, law and policy, medicine, business or the arts.

Keystone Space Collaborative: Convening, Growing, Amplifying Space Industry Businesses in a Tri-State Region

But building a space career-ready talent pipeline in Pittsburgh is meaningless without creating a regional ecosystem of space-relevant employers like Astrobotic. To that end, Astrobotic has been instrumental in building and supporting yet another standalone organization, theKeystone Space Collaborative. This is a nonprofit with a mission to convene, grow and amplify space industry businesses and talent across the Keystone region that includes three states: Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. Hot on the heels of its successful inaugural conference, the Keystone Space Collaborative is proving that a rich and vibrant regional space ecosystem not only exists, but it poised to emerge as the industrial engine of the global space industry. This Keystone region offers critical assets deep R&D and applied science bench strength across its network of top tier research universities, community colleges and vocational schools; a rich manufacturing history and an understanding of what it takes to industrialize technology; coalesced resources to support new company creation across the region; and a unique combination of the attributes essential to the space industry. Among these are advanced technologies likerobotics, computer science andAI,advanced manufacturingand precision machining, material science, and zero gravity life science and biomanufacturing research.

This opportunity was on full display at the Keystone Space Collaboratives Inaugural Conference, which drew a star-studded (pun intended) cast of speakers, including keynote presentations from NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and Associate Administrators Thomas Zurbuchen and Jim Reuter, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf, West Virginia Senator Shelley Capito, Pennsylvania Congressman Matthew Cartwright, Astrobotics John Thornton, Voyager Space CEO Dylan Taylor, and many others from industry, academia and government. At the centerpiece of the conference were tours of Astrobotic and a rare chance for the conference participants to witness the unveiling of Astrobotics flight-ready Peregrine lander.

The future for Astrobotic and the Keystone region shines bright amidst the blackness of space, and it will take a community of corporate citizens like Astrobotic, with the vision to create and the passion and will to execute, to anchor Pittsburgh, the tri-state region and the nation as a catalyst of the new space economy.

As we watch with anticipation as Astrobotics Peregrine lander descends on the Moon later this year, we trust that the words heard from Astrobotics Mission Control are: Move over Houstonthe Keystone region has landed.

Chrome Beauty Is Having A Huge Moment This Fall – Glam

Posted: at 12:54 pm

There's no denying that there's nothing subtle about chrome beauty.

Before this season, whenever someone mentioned chrome beauty, the first thought immediately went to nails. Nails have always been the most subtle way to incorporate metallics in a casual everyday form. However, this season is all about going above and beyond. Thanks to the '90s comeback in fashion, chrome is moving from nails to the face. Makeup artist Elisa Flowers tells Allure, "We are definitely seeing a lot of nods [in pop culture] to '90s fashion, hair, and makeup these days, [with series] such as the television series Pam & Tommy or Euphoria. It's fun to borrow influences from earlier times in history and make them fresh."

Besides these influences we see from Hollywood, multiple brands are utilizing and taking advantage of chrome's popularity. Part of the reason why chrome beauty has taken off is that these brands are embracing futuristic and metallic styles. Director of product development and product testing at ORLY, Collen Foxworthy, tells Byrdie, "In 2022, we're seeing a lot of conversation around the advancement of space exploration and virtual reality. People are captivated by things like new images from the James Webb Space Telescope. We're seeing that platinum, space age-y, technology-based aesthetic."

So while chrome is not new in the beauty world, these new-age references and influences have inspired this comeback.

Final Score: Cleveland Cavaliers preseason begins with a 113-112 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers – Fear the Sword

Posted: at 12:53 pm

The Cleveland Cavaliers 2022-23 season has begun somewhat similarly to how it ended in defeat. Thankfully, for Clevelands sake, these games dont count right now.

With a 113-112 preseason road loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night, the Cavaliers fall to 0-1 in preseason play. Sure, there isnt much to glean from the final score since, lets be frank, its the preseason. But, there are some interesting subplots within the main event could be worth monitoring as Cleveland shifts focus to hosting Philadelphia at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

Amidst the endless speculation on who will be the teams starting small forward, Caris LeVert got the first crack at things for the Cavaliers. Looking to shake some of the notions surrounding him based on how last season ended, LeVert played well. He finished the night with 7 points, 1 rebound, 3 assists and a block. LeVert primarily played as a complimentary piece on both ends of the floor to Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell and Jarrett Allen, not looking to dominate the ball. All in all, not a bad look for LeVert and now has a few more chances to audition for the starting job.

After LeVert, Dean Wade got a shot with the starting lineup to begin the second quarter. He didnt do much with the starting group he connected on a single three-pointer and forced one Philadelphia turnover. Wade finished the night with 11 points, 5 rebounds and 1 steal. You could tell that at times Wade is still getting the hang of playing small forward he had 2 fouls. But, for what Cleveland needs as a starting three, he fits the bill.

Following Wade off the bench were Isaac Okoro and Cedi Osman, who were both a bit of a mixed bag. Okoro finished the night with 7 points, 3 rebounds and several misses from beyond the arc. Osman, meanwhile, had 5 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Osmans was a bit more of a contribution stat-wise compared to Okoro. But, Okoro looked much more composed within the new offensive scheme Cleveland is rolling with, with his non-shooting deficiencies being covered by how bombs away the Cavaliers were elsewhere on the floor.

As a team, Cleveland connected on 14-33 three-point attempts. Kevin Love looked like his usual self out there hitting on 3-6 attempts from beyond the arc. The tandem of Mitchell and Garland, meanwhile, individually took advantage of the gravity their backcourt playmate possessed. Mitchell was able to connect on 3-4 three-pointers while Garland was able to move the rock all over the floor due to the sudden lack of defensive pressure. Garland finished the night with 4 assists along with 12 points on 4-7 shooting. Mitchell, meanwhile, had 16 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists and a steal.

Not a bad debut for Clevelands new star backcourt. Again, its just the preseason but seeing these two looking so comfortable with one another already is a great foundation to build upon. Its going to be a process for the Cavaliers all season long but it feels like theyve at least gotten the bitter taste of last seasons end out of their mouth already.

Up next: The Cavaliers have their annual Wine and Gold Scrimmage on Saturday at Cleveland States Wolstein Center. After that, they host these same 76ers on Monday night for more preseason action.

Colts vs Broncos Picks: Our 4 Best Bets for Thursday Night Football – The Action Network

Posted: at 12:53 pm

For the latest NFL odds, click here.

Brandon Anderson: What was once a potential AFC playoff preview now feels like an early elimination game. The Colts have the worst offensive and rushing DVOA in the league, and now Jonathan Taylor is an injury question mark. Denver has been almost as bad running the ball and just lost Javonte Williams.

Could that weirdly end up helping the Broncos? It might force them to pass more, and thats where Denvers been better. This is the sort of game you get Russell Wilson for. Hes 29-18-4 ATS (62%) after a loss and 15-7-2 ATS (68%) at home in primetime. Its also a bad spot for the Colts as a road Thursday underdog coming off a multi-game home stand (35% ATS).

I lean Broncos but prefer the under. Indianapolis unders are 4-0 and the Colts have little chance against a good Denver defense. Broncos unders are 3-1 themselves after going 12-5 last year, and Denver isnt exactly scoring well either. Thursday night unders are 3-1 after 11-5 last season. These teams have only gone over 43 once in their eight games this season.

Chris Raybon: Gordon has a lot working against him clearing his rushing prop tonight.

First and foremost is his fumbling issue, which could have an impact on how much he sees the field even with Javonte Williams lost for the season with a torn ACL. Gordon has already put the ball on the ground four times this season, and seven times in his last 13 games dating back to last season. His most recent one came just four days ago and got him benched for third-stringer Mike Boone, who out-snapped Gordon 19-10 against the Raiders.

Even if Gordon starts the game, as expected, its highly likely that Boone enters early and often to form a committee just as Gordon did with Javonte Williams. Boones snap count has every week (3, 7, 14, 19), and hes averaging 6.2 yards per touch to Gordons 4.2.

If you read between the lines of offensive coordinator Justin Outtens so-called endorsement of Gordon, you can see that he immediately brings up Boone in the next breath and then goes on to wonder aloud who else he can use in place of Gordon.

With Melvin hes going to carry the load obviously, Outten said. Well have a mix of Boone and after that, weve got to figure out who can spell and who feels best in that position.

If you trust a guy to carry the load, youre not openly wondering aloud to the media about a theoretical replacement thats not even on the roster yet (the candidates are the newly signed Latavius Murray and practice squadder Devine Ozigbo).

On top of the uncertainty about Gordons planned role, theres also the possibility of another fumble, which will almost certainly plaster him to the bench for the remainder of the game.

And even if Gordons seizes the opportunity and protects the rock all night, this is still a brutal matchup. Per Football Outsiders, the Colts rank second in run-defense DVOA (-28.4%), third in stuff rate (26%), and second in second-level yards allowed per carry(0.50). Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, who ranks eighth of 124 qualifiers in PFF run-defense grade (76.8), practiced in full this week and was left off of the final injury report after playing just 35% of the defensive snaps last week due to an elbow injury.

Gordon is averaging just 3.8 yards per carry with a long of 13 this season. The Denver offensive line has afforded its halfbacks just 0.97 yards before contact per carry this season, which is 27th in the NFL.

Im projecting Gordon for under 50 rushing yards tonight and would take this down to 50.5.

Nick Bretwisch: The Colts have already had a horrific time generating offensive production (32nd in overall Offensive DVOA and 32nd in Rush DVOA). Theyre simply going to need to move the football in creative ways to stay in this game.

Denvers defense almost exclusively runs Cover-3 and Cover-4 zone defenses, but it also has a top-five blitz rate in the NFL. When faced with Cover-3, Cover-4 and blitz-heavy opponents, Matt Ryan leans on his lower Average Depth of Target (ADOT) pass catchers in Michael Pittman, his running backs and tight-ends.

Yes, well likely see some Kylen Granson, but over the past two weeks, Mo Allie-Cox has been the clear-cut TE1 on this team. In that time period, Allie-Cox has over 20% more snaps than Granson, while running 20 more routes not to mention big Mo has led this entire Colts team in Yards After Catch since Week 2.

This number at 18.5 receiving yards at -110 is simply a price bookmakers should have thought twice about before posting.

Sam Farley: When Javonte Williams went down on Sunday, it was a hammer blow to the Broncos. The running back has been hugely impressive since being drafted in the second round of last years NFL draft. Since the injury the Broncos have swooped to grab Latavius Murray, who will form a committee along with Gordon and Boone.

The focus will be on Denvers backs but the most important thing to remember in this game is how good the Colts run defense is. Indianapolis has allowed an average of just 89.5 yards along the ground, the sixth-lowest total in the league. Combine that with a running back room consisting of a fumbling Gordon and a newly acquired Murray, it makes sense for the Broncos to target the passing game.

Jerry Jeudy erupted for 102 yards and a touchdown in Week 1 before an injury slowed him down for the next two weeks. Last Sunday, fully healthy he was targeted five times, hauling in four for 53 yards and a TD.

I expect Jeudy to be targeted more on Thursday night and to eclipse the line of 51.5 receiving yards. Id take this bet for anything up to 56.5.

Billy Blues Bar and Grill to host ‘Rock For Autism’ fundraiser – The Reflector

Posted: at 12:53 pm

Sebastian Rubino / sebastian@thereflector.com

Billy Blues Bar and Grill in Vancouver will raise money for families in the area who have autistic children to help lessen the financial burden of the holiday season during a fundraiser dubbed Rock For Autism on Oct. 15.

This will be the sixth year co-owners Kodi and Billy Gianukakis will host the event. The duo is personally connected to the autism community through a friend of theirs.

All day for Rock For Autism we will be raising money for ARRO, (the) Autism Research and Resources of Oregon and Southwest Washingtons holiday assistance program, Kodi said.

The event will include live music, a 50/50 raffle and other raffle items that include a stay at the Skamania Lodge and a round of golf for two.

Kodi said they will have T-shirts, collectible pint glasses and other items for sale as well. All of the proceeds from the sales will be donated. There will be multiple beers on tap from Windmer Brothers in Portland and Bale Breaker. Sweetheart Bakery will also provide cake pops for $6 each.

For anyone who opens a tab at the bar from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., Kodi noted 25% of the final bill will be donated to ARRO as well. The event will also include live music from Shoot to Thrill, an AC/DC tribute band, as well as PDX Rock All-Stars.

ARRO is a 501(c)3 that basically benefits area families with one or more children on the autism spectrum disorder, Billy said. This is their holiday assistance program, and what they primarily do is theyre working for families with one or more autistic children, primarily single parents, who basically cant essentially afford a holiday, and what it does is it gets them some money during the holiday season so it allows them to have a holiday they might not otherwise have.

Billy said parents of autistic children can struggle with holding full-time employment while also taking care of their kids, which is why the fundraiser is helpful.

We have a very good friend who is involved with this. Hes the one that approached us originally, he said. Their youngest son, who I believe is now 17, he basically needs 100% full care every day. These individuals that are by themselves that are single parents, its a lot for them, and so this is just basically something that comes in right at the holiday season, lifts them up (and) allows them to do some things that they might not otherwise be able to do.

During their previous fundraiser, Billy said the event was able to raise just shy of $25,000.

As each year has gone, our event has grown more and more and more, so even this year, we did some corporate sponsorships where ilani stepped up and partnered with us on this, which allowed us to do some things, which is huge for them to reach out to another business thats doing charity work and to collaborate together to make this whole thing happen, Billy said.

With the holiday assistance program, Billy specified the fundraiser will help provide funds for food and gifts the family wouldnt be able to afford otherwise.

Kodi said the event is sponsored by ilani, Integrity Machinery Moving and Jacqueline Moore.

Billy Blues is located at 7115 NE Hazel Dell Ave., Vancouver. Entry is $15 at the door.

The event will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15.

‘Community’ Fans Are Hyped Up About The Movie Getting Made – UPROXX

Posted: at 12:53 pm

Long ago, Community was the lesser-loved child of the NBC sitcom lineup. The Office, Parks and Rec, and 30 Rock all had their glory days with various NBC tie-ins and one-off reunions, but Community was often left out of the conversation. Which, to be fair, is a very Community thing to happen, so it kind of works! NBC effectively canceled the series in 2014, before a sixth and final season was ordered by Yahoo! Screen (remember that? Probably not.)

One of the long-running jokes from the series was that it would never fully be complete until there were six seasons and a movie. When the final episodes aired in 2015 on the abandoned Yahoo! Screen, it seemed like the prospect of a movie was long gone. While the cast and crew would often mention the shows mantra and tease the potential movie, it seemed like nothing was really going to move forward. UNTIL NOW!

This morning, Peacock announced they would be reviving the series once more for a movie to finally fulfill the prophecy. Most of the original cast seems to be on board, including Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong. The very dedicated fan base finally came out of hibernation to express not only their excitement but also say that they knew the movie would happen all along and they never once doubted it!

The Community movie currently has no release date, but maybe there is time to bring back Yahoo! Screen for another quick runaround!

Oregon Shows Signs of Greatness in 45-27 Win Over Stanford – Sports Illustrated

Posted: at 12:53 pm

Oregons 45-27 victory over Stanford is just the latest showing of how good the Ducks can be.

A week after Bo Nix threw for a career-high 428 yards at Washington State, he showcased his legs, running wild for 141 yards, while still throwing for an efficient 161 yards and two touchdowns on 16-of-29 passing.

At the end of the first quarter the Ducks had 161 rushing yards to the Cardinals 30 yards of total offense.

MarKeise 'Bucky' Irving who has solidified himself as the Ducks'premier back alongside other backs like Noah Whittington and Jordan Jamesand ran wild for 78 yards in the first quarter alone.

The Ducks cruised into the red zone on their first possession before a plethora of penalties stalled the drive, forcing the Ducks to settle for three.

On their second drive Irving once again gashed the defense, moving Oregon into threatening position before penalties once again killed the momentum, forcing Nix to do one of his newly practiced punts which pinned Stanford in their own 10-yard line.

On the Ducks' third possession they finally broke into the end-zone with a 49-yard screen pass to Chase Cota, his first touchdown as a Duck.

From there the Oregon offense began heating up, displaying the capacity to be highly lethal.

Before the half Nix and the Ducks drove into the red zone, where on third-and-nine Nix stepped up in the pocket, then bought time, rolling out to his right, before finding his new favorite target Troy Franklin who toe-tapped in the end zone for six.

The Ducks then forced a turnover on the first play of the next Cardinal drive as Bennett Williamsknocked the ball loose from Benjamin Yurosek, giving the Ducks another chance to capitalize from good starting field position.

This time Nix opted to score it himself, as he craftily used a variety of pass fakes to slow down his pursuing defenders and find a hole to the end zone.

Scroll to Continue

The play of the night was Nix's 80-yard breakaway run in the second quarter which ballooned the Oregon lead to 28.

After successfully pounding the rock all night resulting in 351 rushing yards, Nix pulled a zone handoff, then checked his targets before darting into an opening in the middle of the field for what looked like a potential 20+ yard gain.

However, instead of sliding as defenders closed in, Nix stepped on the gas, picking up blocks from Franklin and tight end Terrance Ferguson as he left everyone in the dust.

The Oregon defense also shined in the win. Brandon Dorlus, Defensive Line coach Tony Tuiotis preseason Alpha of the defense, had two sacks and three tackles for loss.

Cornerback Christian Gonzalezcontributed with two pass breakups, furthering his case as one of the best cover corners in the country.

If it werent for a handful of early turnovers the Ducks couldve put this game away significantly earlier, which is incredible considering the score was 31-3 at halftime.

The Ducks will look to play a more complete and disciplined game when they travel to Tucson to face Arizona next week.

Putin Accuses West of Satanism and Announces Annexations in …

Posted: at 12:51 pm

Image: Russian TV screengrab

Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a speech at the Kremlin today where he announced the annexation of portions of Ukraine in Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia. In his speech he accused the West of being satanists and said that Russia wants to lead an anti-colonial movement to smash the West. He then formally announced the annexation of territory that Russia invaded and took by force. After the speech was over, the Associated Press reported that Ukraine had officially applied for membership to NATO. U.S. President Biden called the annexation illegitimate, promised to continue to support Ukraine, and announced new sanctions on Russia.

Putins speech and the annexation of these territories is the culmination of a war that began in 2014 when Kremlin-backed forces seized Crimea and pieces of eastern Ukraine.

"I want the Kyiv authorities and their real masters in the West to hear me, so that they remember this. People living in Luhansk and Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia are becoming our citizens. Forever, Putin said in his speech, according to a translation from Reuters. We call on the Kyiv regime to immediately end hostilities, end the war that they unleashed back in 2014 and return to the negotiating table. We are ready for this ... But we will not discuss the choice of the people in Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. That has been made. Russia will not betray them."

In a 2005 speech, Putin told the world that the collapse of the Soviet Union was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century. It was a theme he returned to in his speech announcing the annexation of the territories seized from Ukraine.

"As once before, after the Revolution, the borders of the Union republics were carved up from behind the scenes, he said. So the last leaders of the Soviet Union, contrary to the direct expression of the will of the majority of people in the referendum of 1991, destroyed our great country, confronting the people with a fait accompli. I admit that they did not fully understand what they were doing, and what consequences this would inevitably lead to in the end. But this is no longer important. There is no Soviet Union, the past cannot be brought back. And Russia today does not need it anymore. We are not striving for this."

Putins speech was ostensibly about the annexation of new territory into Russia, but he kept returning to the West. He blamed Anglo-Saxons for the destruction of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines without blaming a specific country. "Sanctions were not enough for the Anglo-Saxons: they moved on to sabotage, he said, according to the Reuters translation. It is hard to believe but it is a fact that they organized the blasts on the Nord Stream international gas pipelines, which run along the bottom of the Baltic Sea. In fact, they began to destroy the pan-European energy infrastructure. It is clear to everyone who benefits from this. Of course, he who benefits did it."

Putin also also made a veiled homophobic joke and talked about sex change operations during his speech, according to Financial Times Moscow Bureau Chief Max Seddon. He then accused the West of Outright Satanism.

Putin [said] Russia wants to lead an anti-colonial movement to liberate the world. We need to turn this disgraceful page. Western hegemony will be smashed. This is inevitable. We must do this for our people, the great historical Russia, Putin said, according to Seddon.

The speech included one reference to nuclear weapons, typical for Putins recent public statements. During several speeches in February, after the invasion, he made direct nuclear threats and put Russias nuclear forces on high alert. In his speech announcing the partial mobilization of the Russian people on September 21, Putin accused NATO of using nuclear blackmail and said he would not hesitate to use his own nukes.

"To those who allow themselves to make such statements about Russia, I would like to remind you that our country also has various means of destruction, and for some components more modern than those of the NATO countries," he said in September. "And if the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people. This is not a bluff."

With this referendum Putin has expanded the territory which he has threatened to protect with nuclear weapons. He used the threat of nuclear war to do it. But he was quick, in his speech today, to point to America. "The U.S. is the only country in history that has ever used nuclear weapons. Creating a precedent, by the way, he said.

The speech ended with Putin and the four Moscow-backed leaders of the territory Russia forcibly seized holding hands and chanting Russia! Russia! Minutes after the speech concluded, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy released a video where he announced Ukraine would be applying for membership to NATO.

Putin Annexation Speech: The Russian Leader’s Denunciations of Western Imperialism Are Hypocritical – Foreign Policy

Posted: at 12:51 pm

With his armys situation in Ukraine increasingly desperate, Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent weeks has been doing his best to adopt the guise of an evil madman, bordering on the style of a cinematic villain. With his over-the-top performance on Friday, when he railed against Western imperialism, engaged in whataboutism about the U.S. use of atomic weapons against Japan in World War II, and accused the United States of engaging in satanism, I found it hard to put aside thoughts of old James Bond villains who constantly try to hold the world to ransomor perhaps, given the preposterously strained quality of his language, the even more colorful bad guys in the Austin Powers movies.

Putins recent brandishing of the threat to employ nuclear weapons is not meant to make people laugh, of course, but rather to shudder in fear. And while there is plenty of reason to worry about the prospect of his resorting to weapons of mass destruction, the common nervous response to the Russian leaders escalatory rhetoric makes it hard to think clearly about whether there is, in fact, anything truly new to Putins threats.

News coverage of Russias debacle in Ukraine last week focused on two details: that Putin was speaking very loosely about using nuclear weapons and that he was claiming to have legitimately annexed a portion of his neighbors territory roughly the size of Portugal following a referendum exercise in those territories regarded as so dubious that most mentions of it in the international media appended the term so-called to the vote. As Carl Bildt, co-chair of the European Council on Foreign Relations, tweeted after the faux referendum, it flew in the face of the results of the 1991 referendum on Ukrainian independence, in which every single region of the country, including those where Russian speakers predominate, voted in favor of independence, most of them overwhelmingly.

Yet little of what Putin did last week was newrevealing just how bankrupt the thinking of a man long regarded by some as a master strategist has become. Putins nuclear threats have been a constant in this war, by turns implicit and explicit. Early in the conflict, for example, he warned darkly about the consequences for Ukraine and NATO of any attempt to attack his forces on Russian territory, even as his forces used Russian borderlands for logistical support and the staging of missile attacks on Ukraine. Washingtons early caution in publicly acknowledging that it was helping to arm and support Ukraine through the sharing of intelligence and other means was based, at least in part, on a fear of a direct, escalatory conflict between the United States and Russia on this basis. All along, Russias targeting of nuclear plants in Ukraine also clearly seems to have been designed to raise nuclear anxiety in Europe and beyond.

Nor is the attempted annexation new. Indeed, this war began with Russias bold and straightforward attempt to seize the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. And, of course, Russia has already had experience annexing Ukrainian territorymost famously Crimea, which it took over outright in 2014, after a creeping special operations infiltration involving Russian troops wearing generic uniforms that masked their provenance. Ever since, Russias goal has been maximalist: either swallowing Ukraine whole or forcing it into abject vassaldom, which would itself likely be a first step toward the reabsorption of its neighbor.

Putins most recent claim to have annexed Ukraines far east not only was made amid a messy and humiliating retreat on the battlefield but was also, in fact, an inadvertent admission of futility. Moscow is seeking through bogus legalism to achieve what it could not win by arms and is hopingI believe vainlythat this will dispirit the Ukrainians and soften European support for Ukraine enough to drive it to the negotiating table, where it would have to concede sufficient amounts of territory, thus allowing Putin to claim victory before domestic audiences and save face.

Among all of the things he has said recently, Putins strained references to Western imperialism are among the most interestingbut not because they should be understood in the way he intended. In his speech Friday, Putin denounced a long list of Western imperial sins, including the global slave trade, the genocide of Indian tribes in America, the plunder of India, Africa, the wars of England and France against China, as a result of which it was forced to open its ports for trade of opium.

It is true, of course, that Western history in the modern era and Western wealth, too, have been driven by empire, a story that begins in the era of slave labor used to produced lucrative commodities such as sugar in the Caribbean.

This is the history I document in my book Born in Blackness: Africa, Africans, and the Making of the Modern World, 1471 to the Second World War. It is also true that although Americans tend to have a gigantic blind spot toward their countrys imperial history, the United States has very much constituted an empire. This history began no later than the conquest of territories west of the Allegheny Mountains, at the expense of native populations that were victims of settler violence and repeated military campaigns.

As Daniel Immerwahr details in his excellent book How to Hide an Empire: A History of the Greater United States, Americas push for imperium accelerated in the late 19th century, with the defeat of Spain and the acquisition of colonies in the Philippines and Caribbean, as well as the takeover of Hawaii. Albeit often more quietly, Americas global imprint has continued to grow ever since, to the point where the U.S. military now has scores of bases, large and small, in countries and territories all over the world.

Yet the problems with Putins denunciation are numerousstarting with the fact that Russia itself is very obviously among the worlds most ambitious imperial nations. In fact, as Dominic Ziegler notes in his 2015 book, Black Dragon River: A Journey Down the Amur River at the Borderlands of Empire, Russia pursued its own empire-building over a series of centuries but accelerated this campaign in the 19th century, very much with America envy in mind.

This meant subduing, displacing, and assimilating its own native populations as ethnic Russians pushed deeper and deeper into the countrys vast eastern hinterlands. There, the sable, a small weasel-like mammal hunted for its fur, played the role of the American bison, both nearly driven to extinction in the search for profits. To make the comparison yet more compelling, Russians, just like Americans, were driven by a gold rush in their newly seized territories. And as with the United States, the story of Russian empire continued well into the 20th century, with the formation of the Soviet Unionan imperial construct par excellenceas well as with the establishment of a bloc of subordinate countries in Eastern Europe that often had little choice but to follow Moscows dictates in matters of ideology, trade, economics, diplomacy, and geopolitics.

Isnt this, at last, what has brought Ukraine to grief? Even though the Soviet Union is a fading memory barely known to young people today, Putin, who was a spymaster late in the Soviet era, has never gotten over the way that empire cracked up.

The current crisis doesnt just take us back to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the demise of the Soviet Union two years later, though. It also brings to mind a much more obscure date but one that everyone concerned by events in Ukraine should be thinking about: 1648. That year, a pact among European nations called the Treaty of Westphalia ended a seemingly endless period of continental conflict that encompassed both the Eighty Years War and the Thirty Years War. Most importantly, this was also the beginning of the end of old-fashioned empire via territorial aggrandizement.

This was, in effect, a before-and-after moment in history. Prior to Westphalia, empires were mostly understood to be borderless affairs: Their dimensions were limited only by the sheer territorial reach of their rulers. Since Westphalia, sovereignty has been understood in an entirely different way. It reflects a collective understanding among nations about one anothers territory and legitimacy within those boundaries.

The 1991 Ukrainian independence referendumuncontested by Russia at the timespoke eloquently about the desire of the Ukrainian people to govern their own affairs. Since then, the world has ratified this desire in the most Westphalian of ways, by recognizing Ukraine, establishing relations with it, and recently even helping it to defend itself.

For all his recent anti-imperial rhetoric, Putin would like to take the world back several centuries, to a time when nations were like amoeba, with borders that mutated, expanded, and shrank according to the will, whims, and power of their leaders. That was the old imperial way, and however difficult the situation in Ukraine might look today, who could wish to revisit the conflict and suffering that this would unleash?
