Pros

Cons

Based out of San Jose, Costa Rica, America's Cardroom is a well-established poker site that's been dealing hands for over two decades. Aside from poker, youll find other casino games on this site, including the best crypto slots online.

The outfit functions as the flagship skin of the Winning Poker Network, a high-traffic poker platform it shares with other popular poker sites like Black Chip Poker and True Poker.

Game Variety & Tournaments - 5/5

Americas Cardroom hosts one of the largest collections of NL Hold'em cash games around, the most popular being low-stakes tables of 9 players. Heads Up (HU) action and Blitz Poker are also available.

You'll also find hundreds of PL Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo tables in play along with a small selection of Fixed Limit 7 Card Stud poker rooms.

For tourney play, the online poker site doesn't disappoint, and along with an excellent selection of Sit and Go's, Jackpot poker games, and multi-flight PKOs, Americas Cardroom is home to the industry-famous Venom poker tournament.

Played four times a year, The Venom is a marquee PKO poker tournament with a GTD prize pool of $10 million and a first-place prize of $1 million.

For something more regular, check out the MillionDollarSunday event - a multi-flight freezeout with a $1 million GDT prize pool and a buy-in of $265.

Promotions & Bonuses - 4.6/5

ACR runs a first deposit bonus of 100% up to $2,000. The bonus is cleared at a rate of $1 for every 27.5 loyalty points earned, and a minimum deposit of $25 is required to qualify. Bonus funds can be applied to cash games, Sit and Go's, and nearly all tournaments hosted on ACR.

While the Bitcoin poker site doesn't have a weekly deposit bonus, there are several promotions worth mentioning, including our personal favorite - The Beast.

A weekly progressive points race with over $40,000 up for grabs, The Beast siphons a portion of the rake from all real-money cash games into a prize pot, which is split among the top 1,600 participants.

Interestingly, your position on the leaderboard is determined by how much rake you pay and not whether you win or lose - making The Beast attractive to both casual and experienced players.

Additionally, be on the lookout for Bomb Pots, which drop 4 times an hour at 6- and 9-player tables (Blitz Poker excluded). Not only are Bomb Pots larger than normal, but all players must stay alive at the flop.

Banking Options - 4.7/5

At ACR, players can fund their accounts with over 60 cryptocurrencies, including popular large-cap coins like Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Ripple, and Bitcoin Cash.

Moreover, ACR is one of the few mainstream online poker sites that accept Monero - something for privacy-loving players to keep in mind.

If you're not interested in using cryptocurrency, ACR also accepts deposits via credit cards and popular e-wallet services like Neteller and Skrill. MoneyGram and Ria transfers can also be arranged.

For withdrawals, players have the choice of cryptocurrency, paper checks, or MoneyGram/Ria transfers. Once submitted, withdrawals take up to 24 hours to process (although crypto withdrawals often take much less time to complete).

Reputation - 4.85/5

Americas Cardroom quickly became one of the largest US, Australia, and UK-facing poker sites in operation. If you're worried about safety, know that the crypto poker site is highly secure, and in its 20+ years in operation, has never suffered a major security breach or data loss.

Finally - at 27% - ACR is one of the few remaining top Bitcoin casinos that still offer a decent Rakeback program - something to keep in mind if you're a serious grinder.

Pros

Cons

Black Chip Poker is an all-in-one gambling site complete with slots, casino games, and - of course - Poker. Its also one of the best blackjack sites on this list.

Like its sister site, Americas Cardroom, Black Chip Poker operates on the Winning Poker Network - giving players access to high-traffic cash games, large prize pool tournaments, and excellent bonuses.

Game Variety & Tournaments - 4.8/5

BCP hosts a wide array of cash games, including NL/FL Hold'em, PL Omaha, Omaha H/L, and Stud. Stakes range from micro to high with a good number of options in-between to fit all bankrolls.

For tournament play, BCP offers the same selection of Multi-Table Tournaments and Sit and Go's you'd expect to find at any top poker site. The site also runs frequent NLHE and PKO Jackpot poker tournaments.

These Jackpot Poker games feature buy-ins for all stake levels and prize pools can reach a whopping $1 million. PKOs are also well-represented, and we were impressed to see a handful of $10,000 and $25,000 GTD prize pots in play.

Players can also take test their luck (or skill) at BCPs Million Dollar Sunday tourney. This multi-flight event comes with a GTD prize pool of $1 million and re-entry is allowed.

Of course, as part of the Winning Poker Network, all BCP players have access to The Venom poker tournament - a multi-flight freezeout with a $10 million GTD prize pool and a top prize of $1 million.

Promotions & Bonuses - 4.75/5

BCP is stacked with bonuses, starting with a first deposit bonus of 100% up to $2,000. Funds are released at a rate of $1 for every 27.5 Awards Points earned and youll have 60 days to clear the entire bonus.

From there, we recommend checking out BCP's lineup of Freerolls, all of which offer a GTD prize pool of $50. If you plan on being a regular customer, consider checking out BCP's Elite Rewards program - a 6-level program full of cash rewards.

However, signing up with the Elite Rewards program means you lose access to the site's 27% rakeback program - something to keep in mind.

Finally, BCP runs two progressive points races - Sit and Crush and The Beast.

The latter features a $40,000 prize pool split among the top 1,600 participants. Sit and Crush operates in a similar fashion, but points are earned by playing Sit and Go's, Jackpot Poker Games, and On Demand Tournaments.

Banking Options - 4.8/5

Black Chip Poker accepts over 60 popular cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Dogecoin, Litecoin, Monero, and even Zcash.

For fiat options, BCP accepts credit card payments, several popular e-wallet, and money transfer services like MoneyGram and Ria.

If you don't see a deposit option you like, know that BCP's customer service staff are willing to work out custom deposit methods.

For withdrawals, BCP gives users the option of Cryptocurrencies, paper checks, and MoneyGram/Ria. Minimum withdrawal amounts range from $50 to $100 depending on the method and most cashout requests are processed within 24 to 48 hours.

Reputation - 4.85/5

As part of the Winning Poker Network, Black Chip Poker enjoys a solid reputation among poker players, and its random number generator technology has been certified by iTech labs.

The site also offers a good mix of new, casual, and experienced players and it hasn't been the subject of any major scandals in its nearly two decades of operation.

While player tracking tools are prohibited, BCP does let you download a detailed copy of your hands' history, giving serious players the chance to analyze their past moves, decisions, and mistakes.

Pros

Cons

Coinpoker is a blockchain-powered, fully-decentralized poker platform that came online in 2017. The site offers fast withdrawals, no KYC checks, and a generous 30% rakeback program.

Poker Variants & Game Variety - 4.3/5

Most of CoinPoker's cash game action is split between its NL Hold'em and PL Omaha poker rooms. The site is home to a handful of 5 Card Omaha bitcoin poker rooms, which adds a nice bit of variety to the mix.

Unfortunately, no Stud, FL Omaha, or No Limit Omaha poker rooms are available and the site receives noticeably less traffic than Americas Cardroom or Black Chip Poker. In fact, CoinPoker tournaments receive far more action than their cash games - especially the NL Hold'em Satellite freerolls.

Finally, CoinPoker is one of the only BTC poker sites to offer Open Face Chinese Poker - a fun, fast-paced, three-player poker variant with low stakes.

Promotions & Bonuses - 4.4/5

Compared to other Bitcoin-friendly poker sites, CoinPoker is lacking in the bonus department and you won't find any welcome or weekly reload bonuses up for grabs.

Nevertheless, the site does run a weekly progressive points race with a prize pool of 10,000 USDT. Interestingly, this prize pool is split between two leaderboards - one for NLHE and one for PLO. There's also a monthly tournament points race with a prize pool of 15,000 USDT.

In both cases, points are scored based on activity and not stakes, meaning the more you play the more points you get.

Holding CHP also gives you access to the site's 30% rakeback program (which is paid out every Monday).

Banking Options - 4.2/5

CoinPoker is a crypto-only online gambling site, accepting deposits in Bitcoin, Tether, CHP, Ethereum, Polygon, and BUSD. Conveniently, CoinPoker has no minimum deposit amount and no personal info is required to fund your bankroll.

Withdrawals can be completed using any of the supported coins, and once submitted, a withdrawal request is typically processed within 10 minutes or less!

There are, however, a few issues to be aware of. CoinPoker will only accept BTC deposits from BTC legacy addresses, and because CoinPoker assigns a fixed crypto address to your account, you'll need to deposit and withdraw funds using the same wallet address.

Reputation - 4.4/5

While nowhere near as popular as sites like ACR and BCP, CoinPoker has the distinction of being the largest fully decentralized online poker site in operation.

Additionally, because the site uses blockchain - and not regular RNG technology - to shuffle decks, you know every hand you receive is 100% provably fair.

CoinPoker also offers some of the best customer services in the online poker industry. Whether you have a question about gameplay, bonuses, or banking, a customer service representative is always available through the platform's Telegram channel.

Enjoy your favourite poker game on the go with CoinPoker!

Pros

Cons

Launched in 2017 as the flagship skin of the GoodGame Poker Network, GGPoker is a UK-friendly poker site that comes with plenty of unique features, excellent mobile support, and a large selection of tournaments (WSOP included).

Poker Variants & Game Variety - 4.75/5

GGpoker offers first-class game variety, starting with its ever-popular NLHE and PLO cash games. Stakes range from $0.05/$0.1 up to $5/$10 with no shortage of options in-between.

We were also impressed by the number of PLO-5 poker games available and some of the lower-stake rooms feature over 30 tables and 70+ players.

GGpoker also runs its own version of Rush or Blitz poker called 'Rush & Cash'. Buy-ins range from $0.40 up to $80.

We also recommend checking out GG's ever-exciting 'All-In Or Fold' (AoF) games. This fast-paced poker variant features up to 16 players with 4 players per table in a shootout format. Like the Rush & Cash, all AoF games contribute to a $25,000 daily points race.

If tournament play is your jam, GGpoker won't disappoint. Along with an excellent selection of in-house GGMaster Freezouts (which feature a GTD prize pool of $500,000), the site is also a WSOP partner - giving you access to the $20 million GTD Main Event and the chance to pick up some Bracelets.

On top of all this, Daily GTD tourneys, regular Omaholics, and access to the Battle of Malta poker tournament are also available.

Promotions & Bonuses - 4.5/5

At GGpoker, new players have the option of a 100% up to $600 welcome bonus or $100 in free tickets and cash game dollars.

If you opt for the deposit bonus, bonus funds are unlocked at a rate of $1 for every $5 paid in rake. What's more, you have 90 days to clear the entire bonus - which is more than what most Bitcoin poker websites allow.

The site also runs a Daily Freebie program, which typically comes in the form of a $0.25 ticket for one of its Rush & Cash or Battle Royal Bitcoin poker rooms.

While no weekly reload bonus is available, GG does have a unique weekly Freeroll program. If you make a deposit on Mondays or Thursdays, you'll get a free ticket for a $2,000 GTD Freeroll. Prizes are shared among the top 99 players, making this promotion a great way to pad your bankroll.

Finally, if your 4-of-a-kind is beaten by any hand during a real money cash game, GGPoker will soften the blow by giving you 10% of the pot - a promotion known as the Bad Beat Bonus.

Online gambling has boomed over the past few years, new figures show – Oxford Mail

Posted: at 1:25 am

THAMESValley Police recorded hundreds of crimes related to gambling over two years, figures show.

Online gambling has boomed over the past few years the Gambling Commission estimates there were13.4 millionplayers across Great Britain in 2021, up from 12.1 million the year before.

While the vast majority of players do so responsibly, 'problem' gambling has been linked to a range of crimes such as theft, assault and criminal damage, according to figures obtained through Freedom of Information requests by penal reform charity the Howard League.

They show 486 gambling-related crimes were logged by Thames Valley Police in 2019 and 2020.

The charity asked forces across England how many crimes were tagged with the word 'gambling' over this period.

Lord Goldsmith KC, the chair of the Commission on Crime and Gambling Related Harms, said that despite a mounting body of evidence linking gambling and crime, "too little is being done within the criminal justice system to address the issue".

Identifying gambling addiction, and providing sufferers with the right support and information, is crucial to mitigating the harms done by gambling, the Howard League said.

It found that while Thames Valley Police did not routinely screen offenders on their gambling habits, they did show some awareness and activity on the impacts of gambling at the time of the FOI request in the spring of 2021.

According to the charity's report, four in 10 forces are not taking enough action on the impacts of gambling, and just two in 10 routinely screen those in custody on their gambling habits.

Dominique Webb, head of programmes at the gambling support charity Gamcare, said the link between gambling-related harms and crime is "increasingly clear".

She said the charity has been training staff in the criminal justice system on how to identify those suffering from gambling addiction and direct them to treatment.

Last September, Public Health England estimated there over 2.2 million people who could be classed as problem gamblers, or were at risk of addiction.

The most common gambling-related offence in Thames Valley was violence against the person, with 257 counts across 2019 and 2020.

Of the nearly 3,000 crimes recorded by the 37 police forces which provided data across England and Wales, this was the most common type of offence, with 1,291 incidents.

This was followed by theft, with 688 incidents, and criminal damage, with 206.

Several police forces did not submit useable data, including the Met and West Midlands Police the two largest forces in England Cumbria, Dyfed-Powys, Hampshire, Lancashire, Staffordshire and Wiltshire.

Chief constable Steve Jupp, the National Police Chiefs' Council's lead for serious and organised crime said police forces are working with various groups to improve how the police deal with gambling.

"It is important for policing to recognise the signs early when dealing with someone through the criminal justice process so that the best support is offered to those with a gambling addiction," he said.

"We recognise there is still work to be done in this field and are gathering best practice from forces on early screening of gambling addicts, offering the right support and signpost to where they can seek further help."

Four major developments the gambling industry has witnessed in 2022 – More About Advertising

Posted: at 1:25 am

Here are the four major developments in the industry in 2022.

The pandemic led to a massive boom in the industry. People were stuck at home with nothing to do, so most turned to online gambling. Its been more than a year since the pandemic, the restrictions have been lifted, and the industry is still booming while undergoing numerous developments. These developments are coming rapidly, and if youre not watchful enough, you might have missed some. Worry not though; in this article, well cover some of the major developments in the gambling industry you might have missed in 2022.

According to gambling expert Klara Czerwinska, Dla graczy do?? wa?ne jest, aby nad??a? za najnowszymi trendami hazardowymi, poniewa? te mog? odegra? kluczow? rol? w ich hazardowej przygodzie. Gracze mog? umiej?tnie wykorzysta? rozwj bran?y hazardowej w d??eniu do sukcesu, dlatego te? witryny takie jak polskie kasyna online istniej? po to, by gracze byli na bie??co z najnowszymi trendami bran?y.(Its important for gamblers to keep up with the latest gambling trends as these trends can play a vital role in their gambling journey. Gamblers can utilize the developments in the gambling industry by using them in their pursuit of success; its also why sites like Polish online casinos are dedicated to ensuring that players stay updated with the latest trends.)

Here are some of the major developments that have rocked the gambling industry in 2022.

1. Cryptocurrency and GamblingSince the 2020s began, cryptocurrency has become an integral part of our world. Most industries have now integrated it into their systems, and the gambling industry is no different.

Currently, most major gambling sites now accept deposits and withdrawals in cryptocurrencies. But its no surprise though, because the two industries are simply perfect for each other. Most gamblers love to stay anonymous, and thats one of cryptocurrencys biggest pros. Furthermore, people now want to be able to withdraw their winnings as fast as possible. Most of the traditional payment methods available usually take days, but with cryptocurrency, the entire process is completed in minutes and hours at most.

Theres also the security that comes with using cryptocurrency. Because of scams, most people are scared to put their banking card details in an online casino. But with the new cryptocurrency development that most gaming sites are adopting, these fears are eliminated. These pros are important to the successful operation of an online casino and are why cryptocurrency has become a huge part of the gaming industry today.

2. Smartwatch Gambling Apps In 2021, the total number of smartwatch users crossed the 200 million mark, and gambling experts predicted that it would be the future of online casinos. Its 2022, and it turns out that these predictions were accurate as major gambling software providers are now creating smartwatch-based games.

This is part of the industrys mission to ensure that gaming becomes easily accessible. Three decades ago, going to a land-based casino was the only way to gamble. The late 90s and early 2000s saw the rise of PC gambling, and by the 2010s, everyone could access an online casino on their mobile phone.

Once again, its 2022, and the industry has moved to smartwatches, with games like Lucky Slots, Double Luck Nudge, and Wolf Gold now available on both iOS and Android smartwatches.

3. More Gambling RestrictionsThe gambling industry is a multi-billion dollar sector, and as though, many criminals see it as the perfect way to launder money. These phenomena have been going on for decades, with millions of dollars being laundered annually.

In 2022, most gambling commissions have enforced stricter laws to control how casinos handle funds. In this year alone, three major gaming establishments have been slapped with heavy fines for failing their social responsibility and allowing criminals to launder money through their sites.

In March, 888 UK Limited was fined 9.4 million by the United Kingdom Gambling Commission (UKGC) for laundering offences. BetVictor suffered a similar fate earlier in January when they were handed a 2 million fine for the same offence.

4. The Rise of Online CasinosLand-based casinos are yet to recover from the pandemics blow. Most people who discovered online casinos during the lockdown fell in love with them and are yet to return to traditional houses.

Since traditional casinos are not readily available in all locations, players have to spend a lot on traveling and accommodation fees before they can play their favorite games today. But thanks to the introduction of online casinos, theres no longer a need to spend on these expenses. Just log on to your gambling site and place your wagers.

According to Earth web survey data, 46% admitted to gambling in 2022, with 18% claiming to have gambled online.

The Bottom LineIts almost impossible to find someone that has not heard of the gambling industry in the world. The industry has grown into a major force, generating billions of dollars in revenue.

This is all thanks to the innovations and developments constantly rocking the industry. In 2022 alone, there has been a massive adoption of cryptocurrency as a payment option in many online casinos. The year has also shown that smartwatch gambling apps are the future of online casinos.

Furthermore, theres been a steady decline in land-based casinos, with more players opting to play games online. Finally, different regulatory commissions have created stricter laws to control the high level of money laundering in the gambling industry today.

Online Casino No Deposit Free Spins: Overview, Use, and Their Importance – TheSpread.com

Posted: at 1:25 am

No Deposit Free Spins Overview

A couple of decades ago, the only way one could play a casino game was by going to a land-based casino. Now, anybody can find thousands of online casinos offering various games.

Due to the surging number of online gambling sites, different casinos are now devising creative ways to attract players. One of the ways they're doing this is through No Deposit Free Spins. Slots are by far the most popular online casino game and so giving players a chance to play their favorite slot game for free is a very easy way to attract and keep them.

Here, we'll disclose everything you need to know aboutfree spins no deposit casino.Online casinos shouldn't only be a source of fun and entertainment. With the right information, players should be able to make money too. That's why experts like Kevin N. Cochran provide players with the best online gambling tips and guidance. To ensure they both enjoy and make money off online gambling.

What Are No Deposit Free Spins?

As the name suggests, No Deposit Free spins allow players to play their favorite slot games without spending any money. The difference between NDFS and Demo Modes is that with Demo Modes, you cannot convert your winnings to real money. But in NDFS, you play for free and can still win real money. Even if you lose, you don't lose your money.

These types of spins are given to players upon successful registration. They don't have to deposit any money to access them. Online casinos offer these kinds of bonuses to attract and retain players because the free spins don't normally last long.

Uses Of No Deposit Free Spins

There are currently thousands of online gambling sites offering different slot games, and it can be very hard for players to know which is legit or not. Gambling sites can show that they're genuine by offering players the chance to play for real money.

The Importance Of No Deposit Free Spins

One of the biggest fears when playing slot machines online is losing money. No Deposit Free Spins totally eliminate this risk, all you have to do is register, and you'll get free spins for free that you can use to play for real money.

Also, with the plethora of online gaming portals and games available, Players need to be able to make decisions freely, and they can't do that if they have to spend money on every slot machine they play. With NDFS, players can explore their favorite slot games without paying; even better, you can withdraw your winnings as real money. Only a simple registration and you get free spins.

Another benefit of NDFS is that they allow beginners to understand slot games. They also get to learn vital things likeRTP (Return To Player Percentage)and volatility. With this knowledge, they can safely wager with real money and play for free spins and other bonuses.

The Dark Side Of No Deposit Free Spins

Before signing up on any gambling site because of the free spins, they're offering, always ensure you read their bonus terms and conditions. While you don't require money to access these spins, they usually have rules attached to them, and not all are favorable.

For starters, the online casino offering the spins will determine the type of games you can play with them. Unfortunately, the games offered are usually very poor. They are usually games with high volatility, low RTP, and no bonus features. When this happens, the spins will have little or no value. Secondly, while players are given free spins for verification, the site controls the bets, and players cannot make alterations. Also, the wagers are normally low, and the players are not allowed to increase them. So the chances of winning anything big are very low.

Furthermore, most NDFS come with very highwagering requirements. Some casinos even set their wagering requirements as high as 60x. So players must wager at least 60 times the worth of the bonus offer before they can withdraw their winnings. Most times, before they even go through the wagering requirements, they would have already lost their winnings.

Lastly, online casinos place limits on the maximum possible winning. Finding an online casino that lets you win over $100 using free spins is almost impossible.

The Bottom Line

Online casinos now allow players to get free spins easily. It's a perfect opportunity for gamblers to confirm if the site is legit and check out a slot game before playing with your money.

But unlike demo modes, where you get to play games for free but can't withdraw winnings, a no deposit free spin wager is real, and you can withdraw the winnings as real money. Players are basically given free spins for verificationon the online casino. However, they have rules attached to them. Ensure you read them before registering.

Physics – Breakthrough Prize for the Physics of Quantum Informationand of Cells – Physics

Posted: at 1:24 am

The idea of using the laws of quantum mechanics for computation was proposed in 1982 by Richard Feynman. But Deutschwho is at the University of Oxford, UKis often credited with establishing the conceptual foundations of the discipline. Computer bits that obey quantum principles, such as superposition and entanglement, can carry out some calculations much faster and more efficiently than ones that obey classical rules. In 1985 Deutsch postulated that a device made from such quantum bits (qubits) could be made universal, meaning it could simulate any quantum system. Deutsch framed his proposal in the context of the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics (of which he is an advocate), likening the process of one quantum computation to that of many parallel computations occurring simultaneously in entangled worlds.

To motivate further work in quantum computing, researchers at the time needed problems that a quantum computer could uniquely solve. I remember conversations in the early 1990s in which people would argue about whether quantum computers would ever be able to do anything really useful, says quantum physicist William Wootters of Williams College, Massachusetts, who has worked with Bennett and Brassard on quantum cryptography problems. Then suddenly Peter Shor devised a quantum algorithm that could indeed do something eminently useful.

In 1995 Shor, who is now at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, developed an algorithm that could factorize large integersdecompose them into products of primesmuch more efficiently than any known classical algorithm. In classical computation, the time that it takes to factorize a large number increases exponentially as the number gets larger, which is why factorizing large numbers provides the basis for todays methods for online data encryption. Shors algorithm showed that for a quantum computer, the time needed increases less rapidly, making factorizing large numbers potentially more feasible. This theoretical demonstration immediately injected energy into the field, Wootters says. Shor has also made important contributions to the theory of quantum error correction, which is more challenging in quantum than in classical computation (see Focus: LandmarksCorrecting Quantum Computer Errors).

Without Deutsch and Shor we would not have the field of quantum computation as we know it today, says quantum theorist Artur Ekert of the University of Oxford, who considers Deutsch his mentor. David defined the field, and Peter took it to an entirely different level by discovering the real power of quantum computation and by showing that it actually can be done.

Data encryption is the topic cited for the award of Bennett (IBMs Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York) and Brassard (University of Montreal, Canada). In 1984 the pair described a protocol in which information could be encoded in qubits and sent between two parties in such a way that the information could not be read by an eavesdropper without that intervention being detected. Like quantum computing, this quantum cryptographic scheme relies on entangling qubits, meaning that their properties are interdependent, no matter how far apart they are separated. This BB84 protocol and similar quantum encryption schemes have now been used for secure transmission of data along optical networks and even via satellite over thousands of kilometers (see Focus: Intercontinental, Quantum-Encrypted Messaging and Video).

In 1993 Bennett and Brassard also showed how entanglement may be harnessed for quantum teleportation, whereby the state of one qubit is broadcast to another distant one while the original state is destroyed (see Focus: LandmarksTeleportation is not Science Fiction). This process too has applications in quantum information processing.

I am really gratified by this award because it recognizes the field of quantum information and computation, Shor says. Deutsch echoes the sentiment: Im glad that [quantum information] is now officially regarded as fundamental physics rather than as philosophy, mathematics, computer science, or engineering.

Deutsch, Shor, Bennett, and Brassard deserve recognition for their work, and Im delighted that theyre getting it, Wootters says. He notes that their research not only inspired the development of quantum technologies, but also influenced new research in quantum foundations. Quantum information theory views quantum theory through a novel lens and opens up a new perspective from which to address foundational questions.

Quantinuum Announces Reaching Quantum Volume of 8192, an Additional Type of Two-Qubit Gate, and 500,000 Downloads of TKET – Quantum Computing Report

Quantinuum Announces Reaching Quantum Volume of 8192, an Additional Type of Two-Qubit Gate, and 500,000 Downloads of TKET

Quantinuum has announced another increase in their Quantum Volume (QV) metric for their Ion Trap machines. The previous measure was 4096 which they announced last April and now they have increased it to 8192. This means that it has successfully completed the Quantum Volume test specified by IBM with a circuit of 13 qubits that is 13 levels deep. A key ingredient to make this happen was the implementation of an additional type of two-qubit gate which they call the Arbitrary Angle Two-Qubit Gate. This provides a more flexible way of implementing a two-qubit gate versus the fixed rotations that are used in the original MlmerSrensen gate used in ion trap quantum processors. The benefit is that the Arbitrary Angle gate can implement certain quantum operations more efficiently with fewer levels, faster times, and higher fidelities. For example, Quantinuum indicates that the Quantum Fourier Transfer algorithm can be implement with one-half the number of two-qubit gates using this Arbitrary Angle gate.

In a related announcement, Quantinuum also announced that there have been 500,000 downloads of their open source TKET software since it was released. This number has been helped tremendously by Quantinuums decision in 2021 to make this software open source. Although we dont believe that all the people who downloaded the software are actively using it, it is still an impressive number. TKET has already incorporated support for the Arbitrary Angle Two-Qubit gate.

Additional information about Quantinuums announcement is available in a press release that can be seen here and also a technical paper posted on arXiv that demonstrates a use of the Arbitrary Angle two-qubit gate as well as the qubit resets and other advanced features here.

New Artwork on the Toronto Sign Pays Tribute to the Rights of Indigenous Language Speakers Worldwide – Storeys

Posted: at 1:23 am

Just a few days ahead of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the iconic Toronto Sign has a new look.

At an event held today at Nathan Phillips Square, City of Toronto officials unveiled Rekindle a new wrap on the Toronto Sign created by Canadian-Indigenous artist, Joseph Sagaj, in recognition of UNESCOs International Decade of Indigenous Languages. City officials were joined by Sagaj, Elder Dorothy Peters, and 14-year-old Anishinabe singer and musician, Zeegwon Shilling, amongst others.

In a news release, the City provides some additional context for the new wrap.

The City recognizes the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, focusing on the preservation, revitalization and promotion of Indigenous languages. In Canada, more than 70 Indigenous languages are spoken. Worldwide, ongoing impacts of colonization threaten Indigenous languages. On Turtle Island (North America), some Indigenous languages are close to extinction, some are at a vulnerable stage and some nations have only a handful of people that hold and speak the language.

As such, Rekindle draws attention to how languages are vital to identity, voice and expression and pays tribute to the rights of Indigenous language speakers worldwide.

Sagajs design was selected in May by a community jury and will remain on the Toronto Sign until the fall of 2023. Rekindle is just a taste of his work he has been commissioned for numerous private and public logos, murals, illustrations, and painting projects over the course of his career and much of what he creates is dedicated to sharing his Anishinaabe ancestry and heritage through art.

Language is the essence and spirit of my identity and culture. However, it is not exclusive to the spoken word in the ways of storytelling I grew up hearing and speaking in my community, says Sagaj. In my later years, I realized that expression and voice are also reflected in art, poetry, song, dance, and storytelling through various mediums and genres. Language is also present in ceremonies; the spirit is expressed by way of the heart and its lifeways.

My art renderings and what is featured here in the TORONTO sign is a glimpse of expressions of these ways and reflection of values. From its presentations of syllabics, beaded designs, medicine berries, sacred scrolls, song, dance, and teachings; the seven-pointed star system of clans and governance to the 28-day, 13-moon calendar cycle; of the earth, air, water, to the sky world; of life, the androgynous viewing the vast universe, the poem, to the children, youth, young men, and women and the wisdom of our Elders and Knowledge Holders, are the significance of our traditions, heritage, and world view.

The Toronto Sign is frequently used to commemorate important persons and causes. Prior to today, the sign featured artwork by Danilo Deluxo McCallum honouring the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent and depicting portraits of African-Canadians.

Zakiya is a staff writer with STOREYS. Previously, she has reported on real estate for Post City Magazines, Apartment Therapy, and Curbed. She also writes a quarterly series for a Canadian design publication.

Astronomers May Have Spotted the Remnants of One of the Earliest Stars – Gizmodo

Posted: at 1:22 am

A team of astronomers studying the gas surrounding a distant quasar believe it may carry remnants of one of the universes first stars.

The first stars are known as Population III stars (the three star populations were named in the order they were observed, so the Population III stars are counterintuitively the earliest). These oldest stars are hypothetical at the moment and presumed long gone, as they would have been hundreds of times the mass of the Sun and would have burned out quickly.

None have ever been observed, but their deaths presumably culminated in dazzling supernovae, which blasted their constituent elements into space.

Now, an astronomical team believes theyve found the remnants of one such stars supernova, in 13.1-billion-year-old light from gas surrounding the distant quasar ULAS J1342+0928. The team studied the quasar using the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii.

Specifically, they looked at the chemical elements that surrounded the quasar, the bright, active galactic core surrounding a supermassive black hole. The teams findings were published today in The Astrophysical Journal.

The researchers think the remnants were ejected from a pair-instability supernova, a specific type of explosive star death that leaves no superdense remnant behind, like a black hole or a neutron star. In a pair-instability supernova, every bit of the star is ejected into space.

Yuzuru Yoshii, an astronomer at the University of Tokyo and a co-author of the paper, said in a NOIRLab releasethat a star about 300 times the mass of the Sun that went supernova would produce the ratio of magnesium to iron that matches the elemental makeup of the quasars gas.

In other words, ULAS J1342+0928 has a unique heavy element combination that the team believes is evidence that the galactic core contains remnants of a Population III star.

Metal-rich stars become less common the further one looks back in time, because the early universe was composed mostly of lighter hydrogen and helium. When stars formed, they became factories for all heavier elements (considered metals in astronomy).

ULAS J1342+0928 contained over 10 times more iron than magnesium compared to our Suns combination of the same elements, according to NOIRLab. In other words, whatever primordial furnace produced the gas swirling around that quasar had a very different chemical cocktail than our relatively young Sun.

The team is observing the quasars gas as it appeared when the universe was just 700 million years old. But newer observatories may help find the remains of Population III stars and evaluate the assessment of thisdistant quasar. Those observations may help clarify what happened to the most ancient stars materialperhaps it was flung out and eventually clung to quasars like ULAS J1342+0928.

The Webb Space Telescope, in particular, will be crucial for such investigations. One of the space observatorys main objectives is to scrutinize the oldest light in the universe, to see the first stars and galaxies being born.
