The food we consume has a massive impact on our planet. Agriculture takes uphalf the habitable land on Earth, destroys forests and other ecosystems, and produces aquarter of the worlds greenhouse gas emissions. Meat and dairy specifically account for around 14.5percentof global greenhouse gas emissions.

So changing what we eat can help reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable farming. But there are several climate-friendly diets to choose from. The best known are the completely plant-basedvegandiet, thevegetarian diet (which also allows eggs and dairy) and the pescetarian diet (which also allows seafood).

There are also flexitarian diets, where three-fourths of meat and dairy is replaced by plant-based food, or the Mediterranean dietwhich allows moderate amounts of poultry, pork, lamb and beef.

Which diet should you choose?

Lets start with a new fad: the climatarian diet. One version was created by the not-for-profit organization Climates Network, which says this diet is healthy, climate friendly and nature friendly. According to the publicity, with a simple diet shift you can save a tonne of CO equivalents per person per year (equivalents just means methane and other greenhouse gases are factored in alongside carbon dioxide).

Meat, especially highly processed meat, has been linked to a string ofmajor health issuesincluding high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer.

Sounds great, but the diet still allows you to eat meat and other high-emission foods such as pork, poultry, fish, dairy products and eggs. So this is just a newer version of the climate carnivore diet except followers are encouraged to switch as much red meat (beef, lamb, pork, veal and venison) as possible to other meats and fish.

The diet does, however, encourage you to cut down on meat overall and to choose responsibly produced and local meat where possible, in addition to avoiding food waste and consuming seasonal, local foods.

So saving a tonne of carbon dioxide is great but switching to vegetarianism or veganism can save even more. A Western standard meat-based diet produces about 7.2 kilograms of CO equivalent per day, while a vegetarian diet produces3.8 kg and a vegan diet2.9 kg. If the whole world went vegan, it would save nearly 8 billion tonnes COequivalent while even a switch to the Mediterranean diet would still save 3 billion tonnes. That is a saving of between 20 and 60 percent of all food emissions, which are currently at 13.7 billion tonnes of COequivalent a year.

Tosave our planet, we must also consider water and land usage. Beef, for instance, needs about 15,000 liters of water per kilo to produce. Some vegetarian or vegan foods likeavocadosandalmondsalso have a huge water footprint, but overall a plant-based diet hasabout half the water consumptionof a standard meat-based diet.

A global move away from meat would also free up a huge amount of land, since billions of animals would no longer have to be fed. Soy, for instance, is one of the worlds most common crops, yet almost 80 percent of the worlds soybeans are fed to livestock.

The reduced need for agricultural land would help stop deforestation and help protectbiodiversity. The land could be used to reforestandrewild large areas, which would become a natural store of carbon dioxide.

Onestudysuggests a move to a global plant-based diet could reduce global mortality by up to 10 percent by 2050.

Whats more, a plant-based diet is generally healthier. Meat, especially highly processed meat, has been linked to a string of major health issues, including high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer. However, meat, dairy and fish are the main sources of some essential vitamins and minerals such as calcium, zinc, iodine and vitamin B12. A strict vegan diet can put people at risk of deficiencies unless they can have access toparticular foods or take supplements. Yet both supplements and vegan food products are too expensive or difficult for many people around the world to access, and it would be hard to scale up supplement production to provide for billions of extra people.

So a climatarian or flexitarian approach means there are fewer health risks but it still allows people to exercise choice.

One issue that seems to be missing from many food discussions is the ethical dimension. Every year we slaughter69 billion chickens, 1.5 billion pigs, 0.65 billion turkeys, 0.57 billion sheep, 0.45 billion goats and 0.3 billion cattle for food worldwide. That is over nine animals killed for every person on the planet per year all for the nutrition and protein that we know can come from a plant-based diet.

So what is the ideal global diet to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce habitat destruction and help you live longer?

Well, I suggest being an ultra-flexitarian, a diet of mostly plant-based foods but one that allows meat and dairy products in extreme moderation, with red and processed meat completely banned. This would save at least 5.5 billion tonnes of CO equivalent per year (or 40 percent of all food emissions), decrease global mortality by 10 percent, and prevent the slaughter of billions of animals.

It started as a hobby. The K9 Shop is now a Long Island phenomenon – Greater Long Island

Robert and Anya Tucker just wanted their dog to live a happier and healthier life.

So they zeroed in on her diet and made huge changes.

Their neighbors soon took notice of their happy dog on walks.

That shiny coat!

That giddyup!

Soon, they were helping their neighbors dogs, too.

The Tuckers passion for pups rapidly turned into a business phenomenon.

The Bay Shore couple now owns and operates The K9 Shop, where Real Dogs Eat Raw, with locations in Massapequa and Bohemia, and a franchise shop in Lynbrook.

They opened in Massapequa in 2018.

But we had to expand [from Massapequa], because people were coming from as far east as Montauk, and west from the city, Staten Island, Robert said.

Even the original Massapequa location has nearly tripled in size, and is now located at 939 Broadway, a 2,200-square-foot space where theres plenty of room for canine visitors.

It was a hobby; we had no intention of starting a business, Robert said. But then it started snowballing, and I said, This is interesting; maybe can do something with this.

The couple now owns and operates the largest raw and natural pet food provider in New York State.

Anya says trust has fueled the success of The K9 Shop.

That, and customers who become friends. Those believers talk, and word of mouth has been tremendous for the company.

Before the couple started selling food from a freezer in their garage in Bellmore in January 2017, they spent countless hours researching what they call species appropriate diet options for dog Ginger, a vizsla.

They were driving and flying around the country, meeting with (and inspecting) potential food sources and providers.

Today at The K9 Shop, the offerings include complete and balanced meals, bones, fish, farm eggs, whole prey and DIY raw chunks with food also coming in from local farms. That includes duck necks, turkey necks, rabbit parts, and chicken feet, to name just a few.

This is as Mother Nature intended it, Anya often says.

What builds the trust?

People can see the results in their dogs health, coat, behavior, Anya said. They see the dogs changes yeast problems, ear problems, hot spots, gone. Their teeth are cleaner

Its all about feeding them what theyre meant to eat, she continued. Dogs were meant to be ripping and tearing. Its human-grade food, the only difference is it has bone and organs in it, which is where they get most of their vitamins and minerals.

Our customers learn to trust us, Anya added. They tell us if its in our store, they dont even need to read the labels.

Feeding dogs kibble has been a trend thats lasted a century.

Because its all too easy.Open the bag and pour.

It was created as a convenience, just like McDonalds was created for us, Robert said. People wanted something quick that they could dump in the bowl and get going. The difference is, were well aware McDonalds isnt good for us. (And we would never eat it every day.)

But its hard for people to understand anything different, the couple says, because for generations theyve grown up with their friends and families giving dogs kibble.

Anything that we [as humans] do to their food, by cooking it, adding coloring, fillers, and preservatives, what were doing is killing the food itself, and it ends up having no nutritional value, because of the high processing, Anya says. Thats why these big dog food companies have to then spray on all these flavors, vitamins and coloring to make the kibble more palatable.

A top priority for all K9 Shop employees is education, not only about the dangers and dark secrets of kibble, but the real benefits of raw and natural food and supplements.

The key is educating, Anya says. That is why all of the dogs do so well on this food. Some might need extra supplements, some diets need to be tweaked, especially for things like kidney disease, EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency) or diabetes. We just educate people so well.

Robert added:

We believe that everything is healed from the inside out, and it starts with what they eat.

The Tuckers had a beloved English bulldog named Georgia, a female that had a whole host of health issues: from her skin, to her weight, to her coat.

After Georgia passed away, they wanted to prevent the same thing from happening to Ginger. (They soon added a second vizsla, Ember. These two dogs are the inspiration for the store and The K9 Shops official mascots.)

Georgia had passed and we started researching raw food, Anya said. But here on Long Island [in 2016-17] we couldnt find a good source of raw food that wasnt either tremendously expensive, or tremendously messy, or of the highest quality.

Quality is something the couple swears by still today, and since the earliest days packing freezers in their garage.

We never compromise on quality, Robert says. We keep our quality super high and we would never come off that. We only go after the best. If I dont feed it to my dogs, its not in my store, period.

Their goal is and always has been helping more and more dogs live better lives. Their growing business has simply been a byproduct of this.

People are always nervous about starting their dog on raw, but when you just think of the nature aspect, dogs dont have the ability to cook their own food, Anya says. They never did, and they never will.

8 Food to Try for Healthy Hair, Skin, and Nails – Healthline

When we think about improving the health of our hair, skin, and nails, our first thought may be to hit the beauty counter. Products promise to strengthen our nails, lengthen our hair, and keep our skin looking refreshed.

However, you may want to take a detour to the supermarket. What you put in your body may be just as important as what you put on it.

Your skin and body will be a reflection of what youre putting in your body, says Alain Michon, the medical director at the Ottawa Skin Clinic and a board certified medical professional with the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine.

It sounds feasibledelicious, even. But is it possible to eat your way to better, healthier hair, skin, and nails? Heres what research and three experts say.

Youve likely heard about scientific support for the idea that certain foods can support heart health.

But what about hair, skin, and nails? The research is evolving and, at times, mixed.

A 2020 review of 24 articles that included more than 1,700 patients suggested that a Mediterranean diet rich in raw vegetables and fresh herbs as well as diets high in protein and soy may be a useful complementary therapy for non-scarring alopecia.

Research from 2016 indicated that women who ate low-glycemic diets rich in complex carbohydrates, vitamins A, B, and C, and minerals like zinc and magnesium might have less hair loss during menopause.

A small 2019 case study of two women ages 39 and 41 suggested that limiting the intake of mercury-rich tuna could reverse hair loss in early menopause.

A 2019 review indicated micronutrient deficiencies such as diets lacking biotin, vitamins A and C, and zinc could affect hair health.

A 2022 review suggested that eating a plant-based diet could benefit skin barrier health and function.

On the other hand, a 2020 review on nutrition and the skin indicated there isnt enough research to conclude whether diet could prevent signs of aging.

Nails are keratin-rich, and nutrition may impact their health.

An older 2010 review indicated that nearly any nutritional deficiency, such as calcium or iron, could affect nail growth.

A 2019 review suggested people with micronutrient deficiencies, such as biotin, vitamins A and C, and zinc, are more likely to have less healthy nails and skin.

Though research is evolving, particularly for nails and skin, nutrition can be a low-cost, low-risk way to attempt to improve hair, skin, and nail growth.

Heres what some dieticians and dermatologists suggest putting on your plate.

Katie Tomaschko, MS, RDN, says seafood rich in omega-3 fatty acids can benefit the hair and skin.

Omega-3 fatty acids could help reduce inflammation and redness in the body and skin, says Tomaschko, a private practitioner in Buffalo, N.Y. Theyre also a rich source of protein, the powerful antioxidant vitamin E, and biotin, a nutrient that supports keratin production.

Fish she recommends are:

Tomaschko notes that sweet potatoes are rich in the carotenoid beta-carotene, which she says is a precursor for vitamin A.

Vitamin A promotes keratin production and is essential for skin and nail health, Tomaschko says.

An older 2004 study indicated that the anthocyanins in purple sweet potatoes have anti-oxidant properties that may improve skin inflammation. Antioxidants can also help protect against free radicals, which can trigger premature aging.

A 2012 study suggested that people with vitamin A deficiency may note detrimental effects on their hair and skin.

Tomaschko says some seeds, particularly sunflower seeds, are good sources of:

Paula Doebrich, MPH, RDN of Happea Nutrition says nuts, such as almonds and walnuts, also boast the antioxidant vitamin E, which helps combat oxidative damage.

She also says vitamin E also boasts anti-inflammatory properties that may help absorb energy from UV light and protect against skin damage and visible aging signs, like fine lines and sun spots.

Tomaschko says avocados are rich in healthy fats and nutrients that promote skin and nail health, including:

One cup of mashed or pureed avocado contains 23 milligrams of vitamin C, 16.1 micrograms of vitamin A, and about 5 milligrams of vitamin E.

A 2017 review suggested that eating fruits and vegetables was linked to skin health and noted that vitamin C intake is usually associated with consuming produce.

The review also included studies indicating vitamin C could help with collagen production and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

However, the review stopped short of definitively saying this nutrient could combat aging.

Protein is an essential part of a hair-healthy diet, Doebrich says.

Our hair is made of a protein called keratin, so a diet insufficient in protein may make hair brittle, Doebrich says.

One extra-large egg boasts nearly about seven grams of protein.

Loading up on leafy greens provides the body with plenty of nutrients that can benefit the hair, skin, and nails.

Examples of dark, leafy greens include:

Hit the oyster baryour hair and skin will thank you.

Oysters are an excellent source of zinc, Doebrich says. Zinc is needed for hair growth and tissue repair.

One cup of oysters contains 97.5 milligrams of zinc. These fish are also loaded with protein 14.2 grams per cup.

Drinking water isnt the only way to up your intake. Tomaschko says some foods have high water content, including:

A 2018 review suggested more research on hydration and skin health was needed.

Tomaschko says its unnecessary to completely cut anything out of your diet unless you have an allergy or intolerance.

Still, certain items should be consumed in moderation.

Tomaschko suggests saying cheers with something other than alcohol if you want to toast to something every night.

Alcohol dehydrates you and preoccupies our bodies with filtering it out, thus preventing our bodies from doing their normal day-to-day maintenance, which includes working to sustain our skin and nail health, Tomaschko says.

A 2018 study of more than 3,000 women ages 18 to 75 of multiple ethnic backgrounds including Caucasian, Asian, Black, and Latinx suggested that heavy drinking, defined as more than eight beverages per week. was associated with facial aging signs.

These included:

Moderate drinking was linked to undereye puffiness and midface volume loss.

Steering clear of ultra-processed foods may decrease your risk of skin issues.

These foods can run the risk of causing inflammation in the body, which would be harmful for our skin and nail health, Tomaschko says.

Foods to consider once-in-a-while treats include:

A 2021 study of more than 15,000 Chinese adults indicated that processed food intake may increase risk of atopic dermatitis.

A 2020 review noted that some studies linked food processing methods like frying and high-fat diets to skin aging.

A 2020 review pointed to studies that suggested sugary diets can increase skin aging.

Research from 2016 indicates that low-glycemic diets may help prevent hair loss during menopause.

Tomaschko recommends limiting consumption of:

Michon says theres some evidence that supplements can prompt hair, skin, and nail growth.

Still, he advises people to be careful and consult with a provider. Dont think of supplements as a replacement for a diet rich in healthy foods.

Its important to note that supplements should not be a substitute for your regular diet, he says. Instead, use supplements in conjunction with the whole foods that youre consuming.

A small, older study of 71 patients indicated biotin could help strengthen nails.

Another study from 2011 suggested omega-3 supplements may help reduce skin damage from UV ray exposure.

However, a 2020 study indicated several risks to taking supplements for beauty, including an increased risk of cancer with long-term use.

Doebrich says most people in the U.S. get enough nutrients from diet alone.

Though protein has been linked to hair and skin health, Doebrich says its possible to get those benefitsand othersif you follow a vegan diet.

She recommends:

The good news: No food is entirely off-limits unless you have an allergy or intolerance, Doebrich says.

On the other hand, some foods are better enjoyed occasionally, including ultra-processed and fried foods, sugary treats and beverages, and alcohol.

These foods have been linked to issues like hair loss, skin aging, skin dehydration, and atopic dermatitis.

The FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness. Doebrich says its critical to speak with your healthcare professional before starting supplements.

A 2020 study suggested supplementation could trigger choking, allergic reactions, and increased risks for cancer and diabetes.

Theres been mixed evidence on whether dairy, particularly cows milk, can exacerbate acne, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes. Speak to a healthcare professional before cutting dairy from your diet, as it contains other nutrients.

There is evidence to suggest some vitamins, minerals, and diet types can help enhance hair, skin, and nail health. These include omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, C, and E, and high-protein, low-glycemic diets.

Try foods like salmon, nuts, avocados, and fruits and vegetables.

Its best to avoid ultra-processed, sweetened foods. You dont have to nix them all together, but limiting intake can decrease inflammation and skin dehydration, bettering hair, skin, and nail health.

Always speak to a healthcare professional before supplementing. Most nutrients can be obtained through food alone, and long-term supplementation carries risks.

Collagen is a protein naturally produced by our bodies, as well as in animal products like beef and fish. So what is vegan collagen and are the benefits the same?

In recent years, more and more people have been trying to increase their natural collagen levels through both diet and supplements. Theres a lot of research (opens in new tab) to show that collagen can boost skin health but, as the most abundant protein in the body, it also acts as a connective tissue for your bones, tendons, and muscles.

For most people, your natural collagen levels will begin to decline as you age, which can negatively impact bone and muscle health. Exercise, stretching and collagen supplements are all ways to prevent this. But one of the key ways to boost collagen levels is increase the amount of collagen you obtain in your diet, mostly by eating foods that are high in protein like fish and eggs.

It can therefore be difficult to boost your collagen levels if you follow a plant-based diet. But its not impossible. We spoke to the experts about vegan collagen, to see if these plant-based supplements are really as effective as the real thing.

Collagen is found in animal products, like beef and fish. Dr Ross Perry, doctor and founder of skin surgery Cosmedics (opens in new tab) also explains that its a protein mostly found in hair, skin, nails, bones and ligaments. This means that our bodies naturally produce collagen and so do other animals bodies, which is why eating food items like beef and fish can help boost our collagen production, he says. Collagen is one hundred percent animal based.

So although there are no plant-based food items that naturally contain collagen, there are vegan foods you can incorporate into your diet that might boost collagen production.

According to Dr Perry, there is some research to show that foods that are high in the amino acids glycine, lysine and proline will boost collagen production in the body. Antioxidants like vitamin C are also thought to boost collagen production.

You can also take vegan collagen booster supplements, which contain these nutrients in powder or capsule form. On top of this, scientists are genetically engineering vegan collagen. Recently, scientists have started to produce collagen made from genetically modified yeast and bacteria, whereby a digestive enzyme is then added to match the same structure of human collagen, Dr Perry explains. As these are genetically engineered and no materials are derived from animals or fish, they are considered vegan.

So just how effective is vegan collagen? While the production of genetically engineered collagen is still in its early stages, research (opens in new tab) suggests that it could be promising as one of the strains of bacteria known as streptococcus pyogenes is thought to contain enough collagen to be commercially viable. However, Dr Perry stresses that it is still to be tried and tested and it is not yet readily available.

There is also some evidence to suggest that vegan collagen boosting ingredients could be effective. A 2018 study (opens in new tab) found that vitamin C could increase the production of collagen, accelerate bone healing and reduce levels of free radicals in the body.

If you follow a plant-based diet, Dr Perry advises that the best way to boost your collagen levels is by stimulating the bodys natural collagen synthesis by consuming foods that are high in the nutrients needed for the production of collagen. This includes the ones listed above. He recommends this instead of taking vegan collagen booster supplements, saying: As for vegan collagen boosters as a supplement, my view is not to waste your money as there is little out there to support their effectiveness.

Dermatologist Dr Emma Craythorne agrees: Collagen supplements do not have enough good evidence to say they will build collagen in the skin. At best we can say that it can hydrate the skin.

There are a number of studies to show that the skins hydration can be improved by collagen supplements. Therefore, hypothetically, if the skin is more hydrated then the fibroblasts can produce more products like hyaluronic acids and proteoglycans. However, she stresses that the extent to which these supplements boost collagen production hasnt been tested in these studies.

So is it better to obtain collagen straight from animal products or look for vegan sources? If you follow a healthy diet packed full of nutrients our bodies will create their own collagen and if you follow a vegan diet then this will work much in the same way as following an animal-based diet, Dr Perry advises. So, as long as youre incorporating the right foods into your diet to boost collagen, it doesnt matter whether theyre plant-based or animal-based.

However Dr Craythorne adds: We do know that amino acids are important for wound healing and that vegans dont heal as well after certain cosmetic or medical procedures. But we dont have the evidence to say this could be down to collagen production.

The jury is certainly still out on vegan collagen, as far more research needs to be done around it. However, it certainly seems like theres no harm in incorporating collagen-boosting foods into your diet, for their various health benefits.
